    Combo project

My wife restores an also makes new stained glass windows. She found this panel at a antique store. It was in very bad condition. She asked me to make a frame for it. It is made out of padauk with inlays of yellowheart & oak. The frame is 3 1/2” x 3/4”. This was a challenge for me because of not doing very many inlays and cutting such hard woods 1 1/2” thick. Also I used half lap joints.

First time in the shop in over a month due to a kitchen remodel. Thanks to lawson56 for a really cool pattern. Live edge Black Walnut backed with rough cut Black Walnut. 7 1/2" tall. ***Ha! Just noticed the drill hole I left undone in his mustache. I'll fix that later.

Well I decided to knock this out this morning. I want to thank Wayne for doing the pattern and also the other pattern makers that also made name patterns for me to try. This one seemed to work the best because of so many letters. This is made out of Oak and I made it 12 inches long and about 2 inches high. I think he will like it.

  4. I have had a busy summer and have not spent much time online. I have been building out my new shop/studio, but have still been doing a fair amount of scrolling, and just did two takes on Alex Fox’s C15 basket. I used 1/4” Baltic Birch, #1 FD Ultra Reverse blades. I oiled one in Natural Danish and the other one in Medium Walnut Danish oil. In the pics I light the lighter one, but in person I like the walnut better. If I do another one I might alternate the colors on each layer.I also bought some of Steve Goods signature coins and used them for the first time. The coins are 1/8” thick and I use two Forstner Bits.have made one sacrificial Forstner bit by removing the point. I start the hole with a regular bit to center it, then finish it with the sacrificial bit to just over 1/8” so as not to drill through the wood.

    Portrait of Friends

I wanted to make a portrait for our best friends. Picture was taken last year while they were on a cruise. My wife did the primary cleanup in Photoshop and then I'm back to MS 3D Paint to gobble pixels. The faces were pretty easy but the shirt and curly hair is a Pita. I need to learn how to simplify things.

LOL! the flowered shirt wasn't to bad. It's kind of fun to spin that plaque around the deck of the saw table but the curly hair was just tedious.

  12. You can find tubes of powered graphite at michaels, Hobby Lobby and any where they sell pinewood derby kits. Scout shops usually have is as it is the only approved lube for pinewood derby's. Pencil "lead" is really graphite in solid form. Fredfret

    Printer question

On my Mac I drag to desktop, then click and it opens in preview. Then print gives a screen to let me set the % for size. Hope this is clear as M U D.

  14. This is what I ended up with since I couldn’t find the graphite. Not sure how good it is but I figured if it didn’t work well for the scroll saw I could use it for door hinges etc on the car and bicycle chain etc. So far it seems to be slick and easy working on the saw. But still plan to get the graphite next time I go to the store. I know now that I was looking in the wrong area at the store. So maybe next time I’ll find it.

  15. I have a sakura 21" and use slick 50 dry spray on the two barrels I have. The neat thing about is the act that it has teflon in it and this works its way into the crevices if the metal, Not messy a quite long lasting.

    Portrait S-I-L

My wife wanted me to do a portrait of her sister. The picture is from several years ago. this designing thing is not simple. I feel like I'm gobbling pixels in Pacman. Never sure how much detail I should remove or keep. I'll keep practicing.

Thanks Marg, Nope, I haven't heard of one person liking the Jagger Kelly. The new one sounds like it should be pretty good, but like all things we have to wait and see.

    hope this helps someone

Over the last three years y'all have provided so much help, thank you. I finally feel like I may have done something that might help someone else. I have been putting mini-clocks in various cuttings, I am not always able to add the clock hole to the design due to the odd shape of the wood, so I made this template from 1/8 BB. It allows me to move it around on the piece and when I like it, I can mark the center for drilling. Inner diameter is 1 3/8 and the outer diameter is 1 7/16 (to show where the clock bezel would be. Attached is a pdf, and a two layer photoshop file EDIT Dang photoshop, the inner diameter is fine, the outer diameter is too large - I'm Working on it Sorry guys Jim EDIT EDIT ROFL, this getting old is hard on the memory What I did, since I did not want to try to cut a 1/16 inch wide circle (not sure my skill level is there yet), was to allow for a reveal outside the bevel of the clock face. The clock face bevel has a diameter of 1 7/16 inch, slightly less than half what is shown and the inner diameter is 1 3/8 I need a beer. sigh Jim mini-clock-hole.pdf mini-clock-hole.psd

  42. How about going to a lock shop and buying a small tube of powdered graphite? I used to use that stuff on all mating metal surfaces. It's messy but it works. Better than a spray can.

  46. I really enjoy this type of project , seeing the layers turn into a piece of work is very enjoyable......All are cut from 1/8 BB using a #3 FDUR blade...finished with shellac and spray poly...Takes a little patience but I like the results...Hope you like them as well...Thanks for looking !

It lets you draw your own bowl patterns and you can do oval Shelia Landry has some cool shapes http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/category/boxes-baskets/basket-patterns Also, like John asked, what type of bowl are you looking for?
