    Things I've tried

I'm very, very new to this hobby of 'making' stuff, so I've tried several different things. A scrollsaw Butterfly, A 3d Reindeer, burning wood and an ornament from the forum book. I guess I'll settle down and chose just one thing to do, but for now I'm enjoying the freedom of retirement and flitting from thing to thing.

  9. Yesterday I had the opportunity to sell my stuff again at the VA hospital. This was my second day, the first was about a month ago. After expenses, I came home with around $450, so I think I did pretty good. It also opened up more opportunities for me. A lot of people loved my work, and I was invited to sell at other VA’s in our region. It was just dumb luck that I was set up on the day this hospital was hosting a meeting with all the regional canteen directors. I made quite a few contacts I will be following up with this week. I would saw I did good. Aside from sells, I made opportunities. Hopefully I can make this work.

    Butterfly Message

Hi everyone. Just finished this a short while ago. I want to thank Wayne and Bob for doing two different patterns. I liked the writing on Wayne's and the butterfly on Bobs, so I combined parts of there pattern together. It's about 12 inches long. I have a question for you all. This is basswood and I haven't put a finish on it yet. Not sure what to finish it with. I was thinking on just dipping it in mineral oil. Any suggestions. I giving this to a teacher friend of mine who gave me the idea to do this. She had a picture of the saying on FB and I liked it. I have one more to do. The writing was really tough to do because of the letters being so close together. I did the best I could. P.S. Do you usually put a backing on something like this.

    Things I've tried

Thank you all so much for your kind comments. I'm trying all sorts at present. The Reindeer was done on a bandsaw because I'm a little afraid of the Scrollsaw LOL, I have a cheap and cheerful Scrollsaw that only takes Pin End blades so I'm limited to what kind of pattern I can follow. I tried this today, but I think this is the 'smallest' I can go, for two reasons, The Pin Ends means I can't get 'small' holes and my arthritic fingers locked up just doing this, so any of the beautiful intricate pieces that some of you do would probably put me in a sling for a week.

    Some Ornaments done

Finished some Christmas ornaments for the grandkids. Made out of 1/4 B/B. I want to thank Keith for doing the patterns for me and also Marg for sending me to him. I liked the ones that Marg did and I mentioned that to Keith and he was nice enough to do the patterns for me.

  15. School starts in 3 or 4 weeks! Can you believe it!? What happened? Did your summer seem to go quicker than normal? Mine sure did. With school right around the corner, I thought a Back To School challenge would be fun. Make something for your kids or grand kids for school. Perhaps something for their teacher. Or maybe some learning toys for a school or preschool? Have fun with it and get creative. I can't wait to see what y'all come up with.

  17. Client from Amazon asked if I could make her a 66 Dart.. not sure how I did on it but it's all I could do.. I made a sloppy pattern myself but I suppose it was cuttable as this is what I came up with.. If I make it again there will be a couple of slight changes but over all I think it came out okay..

  23. About 10 years ago I worked on a solar panel system on top of a FedX roof. It was a large system because they had alot of flat roof. I use to walk the grounds around the outside of the building and I saw package after package laying on the ground. What happens is the conveyor system that goes into the trucks for the drivers to load their trucks just keeps packages coming and if they do not keep up they spill over onto the ground or floor inside if your lucky. One day I stopped to pick a few packages up to just put inside the building and I got a ration of garbage for touching them. they said they have some one come around and pick these up. But I saw packages that must have been there for days if not weeks. soak and wet and just mangled. You never know how your packages are handled for sure. It is amazing to watch those conveyor systems in action.

  24. A postal worker once told me that they won't cover poorly packaged items.. they require a minimum of 1 inch space between the item and the box itself.. for the most part.. All of my shipping for my woodwork i wrapped in the large bubbles bubble wrap and about two - three inch thick of just bubble wrap.. then.. I use packing peanuts for fill to make the item filled in the box so it cannot get bumped around inside the box.. When I had items damaged several years ago.. I only used wrapped up news papers.. well not news paper but actual packing paper, LOL.. Anyway I showed my postal clerk how I package my stuff.. and they said they could probably get run over by the mail truck and not get broke, LOL.. On a side note.. just three weeks ago I had a return customer message me and said it was a good thing I wrapped all that bubble wrap on his order.. He said the box was delivered sopping wet and dripping all over the place.. the box was mangled and had a tire track on it just as if it had been run over.. he said he was sure it would be broke or at least damaged from being wet.. He said as he unwrapped the bubble wrap.. the item was dry and un-damaged.. He couldn't believe it wasn't damaged.. Bubble wrap is cheap compared to a scrolled piece.. well at least for me.. I buy it 1000 foot at a time.. and cost me $120 usually last me about a year.. Use about 2 bags of packing peanuts a year as well.. that's the big 20 cubic foot bags..

  32. I made this crayon holder for my friend's grandson. I found the pattern in a book of woodworking projects. The truck body and trailer are made from poplar wood. I bought the wheels from the local Hobby Lobby. I painted it with acrylic craft paint and finished it with a few coats of polyurethane. And yes, he's a big fan of dinosaurs.

    Staining mdf

The question is what look are you going for?? Whatever you do it will be bland because there is no grain to absorb the stain to make it different shades along the piece. You would be better painting it. If you want to try staining use a gel stain and not an oil stain. There are people who will take a comb and run it through after stained or a wire brush to give lines and texture. Can do this with paint as well.

    Not a Happy Camper today

Hi everyone, well I,m not very happy today with the Post Office. You all remember the Navy word art plaque I made for my Grandson. Well I mailed it out priority mail on 8/8/2018 from Ga to N.J. Well it got to N.J. In two days which was great. Well for the past 10 days all the tracking would say was in transit to next destination. Well today I get an envelope with the cut out label from the priority box that I sent out with a note saying my package was damaged in transit and there very sorry for the inconvenience, so I go to the PO to find out where the package is and they don't know. They said to file a claim. I say, how do I file a claim without the damaged goods. I tell them how could that get damaged when it.s made out of wood. They said just take a picture of the label they sent you and a picture of what was in the box. So I guess I'll have to make him another one. It was insured for $50.00 when you ship it priority mail with tracking. Thank God. Let's see how long it takes to get a refund. Well that's all I have to complain about today.
