Selling at tha VA hospital
NC Scroller and 2 others reacted to Jim Finn for a topic
Here is an idea for you, for an item that may sell well at a VA hospital. Little scroll work involved though. Tissue box covers with applied images.3 points -

Well, I took some time to play with the new (to me) Hawk 226 ULTRA saw tonight. I cut out a Christmas Tree (the same one in the bragging section) and only had one issue and that was operator error. The blade slipped out of the lower blade clamp holder. Didn't break the blade, just the blade slipped out. This was on one of my first corners I was cutting. Anywho, I put the same blade back into the blade holder and walla no issues through cutting the whole tree out. I was running it at speed 8 and had the blade clamp in the aggressive slot. I was using a FDUR5 and cutting on 3/4" Poplar wood. It seemed like it took just a wee bit longer to cut it out. But that might be a good thing, because I'm planning on using the Hegner when I'm wanting to stand up and when I get tired then I will sit down and use the Hawk (or at least that's the plan right now). I had absolutely no issues with the tension like the previous owner said she had. So tomorrow night I will cut out a boot jigsaw puzzle and see how well it does. Well all in all I am VERY HAPPY with the saw and might be the best $150.00 I have spent in a long time. I might be looking at another one pretty soon. Thanks to all the SSV folks that have helped me with answering my questions about the saw. I really do appreciate it. Thank you all Jim2 points

Selling at tha VA hospital
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to Trka2002 for a topic
Yesterday I had the opportunity to sell my stuff again at the VA hospital. This was my second day, the first was about a month ago. After expenses, I came home with around $450, so I think I did pretty good. It also opened up more opportunities for me. A lot of people loved my work, and I was invited to sell at other VA’s in our region. It was just dumb luck that I was set up on the day this hospital was hosting a meeting with all the regional canteen directors. I made quite a few contacts I will be following up with this week. I would saw I did good. Aside from sells, I made opportunities. Hopefully I can make this work.2 points -

my wonderful son works in computers outside DC. one of his friends is a graphic designer that is giving me a BIG discount because of my son. i like it more than the one i made. i haven't paid for the logo yet so i am only posting it for my friends here for now. ( printing at office depot $10.96) (he did not include the word "arts" in this first draft but i will have one with a black background as well and that will be the next banner)1 point -
I use veneer wood. It really looks nice and you can stain it or not.1 point

we live on a property in a very very small township called "Olive" (12 houses and 2 churches). my wife and 78yo mother -in- law (mom) grew up here, it was owned for 80 years before i moved here by the "Rose" family. it is to honor 2 fantastic women and those that came before me. my wife got me started in scrolling... she is my rose that bares no thorns. thank you for asking marge. (that's us in my profile pic.)1 point -
I truly have no idea, although I have read on the internet ''have you looked at the Axminster AWFS18 which seems to be a clone Hegner copy '' whilst I have been 'surfing'. That's what made me ask here. Although it would appear to be a saw known only here in the UK.1 point

selling my work

Kevin, I always thought that your business model of making an item after it is order was silly but it works for you. The way I price items works for me and has for several years. I do adjust prices as items sell or don’t sell. I have posted before on how I had two of an item that did not sell. So I raised the price from $30 to $45. I sold both that day. I made four the next year and sold them. This year I made six, and I think I will raise the price again. So I am flexible on prices. The formula of time x materials just doesn’t work for me.1 point -

Hi everyone. Just finished this a short while ago. I want to thank Wayne and Bob for doing two different patterns. I liked the writing on Wayne's and the butterfly on Bobs, so I combined parts of there pattern together. It's about 12 inches long. I have a question for you all. This is basswood and I haven't put a finish on it yet. Not sure what to finish it with. I was thinking on just dipping it in mineral oil. Any suggestions. I giving this to a teacher friend of mine who gave me the idea to do this. She had a picture of the saying on FB and I liked it. I have one more to do. The writing was really tough to do because of the letters being so close together. I did the best I could. P.S. Do you usually put a backing on something like this.1 point

selling my work

Well Ray, everyone is going to shoot you a formula of how to price. But for me, formulas don’t work. The way I price is, I look at it and ask myself, what would I pay for this if I wanted to buy it? I have been selling for a few year now and have found that customers don’t care that this piece is made from exotic woods and they don’t care how long it took to make it. They do know that it looks cool and they would like to buy it if it’s priced right. Now mind you, I don’t give it away. I sell my items for a good price, but affordable. I’m not going to get rich selling, but I certainly am not loosing money either. For the Deer scene I would price at $25-$35. The puppy and kittens portrait maybe $40 and the garage band portrait $25 unframed.1 point -
Well I decided to knock this out this morning. I want to thank Wayne for doing the pattern and also the other pattern makers that also made name patterns for me to try. This one seemed to work the best because of so many letters. This is made out of Oak and I made it 12 inches long and about 2 inches high. I think he will like it.1 point
