    A Few New Ornaments

I figured since I had been resizing puzzle patterns to make them as ornaments.. I could do the same thing with my car clock patterns.. this is the first of many I plan to add into my website inventory.. Should be awesome sellers as my clocks always fly off the shelves.. I'll also add the duster clock cutting.

  6. In the past I used real candles. I got thinking about the liability issues with them and switched to the flickering LED ones. I have done a few Schibbogens and only use the battery led lights. They do a great job on lighting it up too.

    Portraits and Plaques

Did a portrait on my B-I-L from many years ago. 1/8" BBPW on 1/4" base, lacquer finish. Plaque is for his nephew. He trains K-9's in Germany. 1/8" BBPW on 1/4" backer. Time to give the portraits a rest for a while.

  13. Hello Him. If you've got the bolts & nuts out & apart, soak them in some diesel fuel awhile, then use your wire brush on the threads. The wire brush won't bother the threads any, try not to use extreme force into your wire brush. When you put them back together, use just a touch of anti seize on the threads and it will help protect them from rust, too. No need to goober it all over, you'll just have a trap for sawdust, and a mess every time you touch it. It just takes a little dab, and the nut & threads will take care of the rest.

    Christmas Ornaments

I use spray lacquer on most of mine. There are a few brands of spray glitter that I have used a few times when they need some bling.

  19. I've made and given away hundreds of ornaments over the years and I've used many different types of finishes, depending on the ornament and the wood. I've painted some. I've sprayed lacquer or poly. Don't care for either of those options. I've dipped in oils (BLO & Danish). I've left some natural. I've stained and dyed for color. The finish I use the most is shellac. I typically apply it with a spray gun.

  32. Well, I took some time to play with the new (to me) Hawk 226 ULTRA saw tonight. I cut out a Christmas Tree (the same one in the bragging section) and only had one issue and that was operator error. The blade slipped out of the lower blade clamp holder. Didn't break the blade, just the blade slipped out. This was on one of my first corners I was cutting. Anywho, I put the same blade back into the blade holder and walla no issues through cutting the whole tree out. I was running it at speed 8 and had the blade clamp in the aggressive slot. I was using a FDUR5 and cutting on 3/4" Poplar wood. It seemed like it took just a wee bit longer to cut it out. But that might be a good thing, because I'm planning on using the Hegner when I'm wanting to stand up and when I get tired then I will sit down and use the Hawk (or at least that's the plan right now). I had absolutely no issues with the tension like the previous owner said she had. So tomorrow night I will cut out a boot jigsaw puzzle and see how well it does. Well all in all I am VERY HAPPY with the saw and might be the best $150.00 I have spent in a long time. I might be looking at another one pretty soon. Thanks to all the SSV folks that have helped me with answering my questions about the saw. I really do appreciate it. Thank you all Jim

  38. If the ornament is in wood, I dip in tung oil let dry well and spray with poly. Most of my ornaments are in Baltic Birch and I don't like the edges so I paint. Usually I spray with rattle can - white or gold. I use the Rustoleum gold Glitter for the if available. Often I the white spay the with Glitter Blaster silver of gold. I have then sprayed with a sealer (not very often as expensive). Sometimes I high light leaves or bells with craft paint.

  39. Hi Kevin, well I cut the cowboy boot out with the spurs as the interlocking pieces. Took me about 1.5 hours just to cut it out, I still need to sand it tomorrow. I'm pretty happy with it, I think there a couple pieces that won't go together from the front and back. So I'm still pretty happy with it.

  42. I have always used rattle can sprays and have used several types such as Deft (can't find that locally anymore), Minwax polyurethane, Krylon Clear, Rustoleum Polyurethane, and the last two cans I bought were Rustoleum Crystal Clear Enamel. I seem to get the same results with any of those brands so, if you choose to try any of those, I suppose you can just let the price be your guide! Just follow the directions and apply thin, even coats and two coats should be enough protection for ornaments. God Bless! Spirithorse

    Drop it like its hot

Due to the move and getting settled in the new house and all the honey-do's associated with that, its been probably two months since I scrolled. I want to get back to an on-going project (see works in progress, Modern Minuteman), but that requires more time than I typically have after work. So I threw a couple of these out just to scratch that scroll-saw itch.

Yes it's worth looking at. It's a Hegner clone and has very good reviews. At that price it's half of a new one. You could always try for a lower price or ask for extras.

I truly have no idea, although I have read on the internet ''have you looked at the Axminster AWFS18 which seems to be a clone Hegner copy '' whilst I have been 'surfing'. That's what made me ask here. Although it would appear to be a saw known only here in the UK.

Is that the same thing as a Hegner? it resembles a Hegner to me.. Sorry I have no answer really to your question.. as I'm not familiar with that saw..

  48. Glad it worked out great for you.. Yes.. I've mentioned many times in these forums that the Hawks are slower cutting.. even argued that point many times with other Hawk owners.. But.. I've also found that the way the blade stroke is on the Hawks..if you play around with various blade styles and configurations.. many times I find I like x blade or x size on the Hawk... but don't like that blade on any other saw.. so it was kind of like learning to saw all over again I'll be curious how the puzzle works out for you on the Hawk.. I cannot stand cutting them on mine.. but love to cut them on my Excalibur.. Maybe I need to find that right blade configuration on the Hawk.. Also curious about how the puzzle turns out if you cut it with the blade in the aggressive cutting slot.. I did that once and the pieces didn't fit together quite right.. but I also had something else out of wack so i don't know if it was either of the two or just me trying to cut too fast.. Anyway, enjoy making sawdust on your new toy

    selling my work

I recently posed this same question. I got some very good answers and advice. What I have come to is this. I look around out there at what people are spending on cheap imported mass produced crap and decided that I would put a price on what I make that makes me happy. If nobody buys what I have to sell, well at least I enjoyed making it. I'm not going to be Jesse James and hold folks up but on the other hand, I"m not the Tooth Fairy either. My time is just as valuable as anybody else's and the materials are not cheap. So, as a very new novice to this world of scrolling I would say, put a price on your stuff that will make you happy if you sell it. Nothing more, nothing less.
