    Pattern by Mahendra

Just finished cutting this out and putting it all together thanks to Mahendra who did this pattern in record time. It's an 8 x 10 cut with 1/4 inch B/B. Hope she likes it. It was a rush job for this coming Sunday birthday party. Thanks again Mahendra for all the time you put into this.

  3. Since a few of you did the Steve Good Camaro.. I thought I'd do my take on a pattern I had and size it to be a Christmas ornament.. I can say.. I need a smaller drill bit for making this.. especially when making them this small.. The box it's in is 5-1/4 x 3 -3/4 so shrinking a pattern from what was originally designed for a large sign that would have it at 18 - 24 inch long.. LOL I thought it was tough when sized them at about 9 inch for the desk clock.... Anyway.. short day today so only made 16 of them plus some other ornaments.. only about 25 ornaments cut today..

  4. Some say to set ambitious goals, which I did, with a goal of selling 200 puzzles at my 2 day mega event. Last year I sold 93 the first day in 9 hours and 60 the second day in 4 1/2 hours for a total of 153. The first day last year I wasn't able to set up the way I like to and so this year I rented a double booth so I could maximize my setup and therefore my sales... or so I thought, but it turned out to not be as much of a factor as I expected. This weekend I sold 88 and 48 for a total of 136. Absolutely no complaints, still my best event of the year and a great event overall which I'll do every single year along with over 300 other vendors. Perfect weather, huge crowds and great folks to chat with and still going home with a pocketful of cash. In future years I'll continue to rent a double booth, I simply hate having to set up in such a way that people have to come "inside", generally speaking, people prefer to come up to the perimeter of my tent and see everything around 3 sides. Still in Raleigh today (Monday) as my wife is leaving her job of 20 years and they insisted on throwing her a luncheon today so we'll attend that and then head back to the coast. At which point I have to start cutting as I have a new 1 day big event coming up Saturday at a nearby beach town. Should be a great show as well. I did plan accordingly and am taking vacation this week from the day job to make lots of sawdust. And squeezing in a couple rounds of golf this week also. Photos showing booth and the 316 duplicate puzzles I had with me wrapped and ready to go. Only ran out of Elephants as I had a run on them that I didn't expect. Iggy

    Bear

Our daughter likes Bears, so I found a pattern, used 1/2 Baltic Birch ply, 1/4 ply backer spray painted black. Put several coats of wipe on poly before cutting.

  6. I have done inlays with 1/2" board but never 1-inch. That doesn't mean it can't be done. The point may be - What does the other side of the board look like? Remember the inlay on one side of the board will be smaller (larger?) than the other side. When it comes to pointy shapes or small finger or fringe shapes, that can get a little weird. When I do inlays in my intarsia projects, I'll resaw the board I'm inlaying. That gives me two slices 3/8" - 1/2" thick. I use one of the slices and inlay the pattern into it. Once that's set up, I clean up the backside of the inlayed slice and laminate it back to the uncut slice. I now have an inlayed board, 3/4' - 1" thick, but the inlay is only 3/8" - 1/2" deep.

    Y no eBay?

eBay could be an outlet to sell a few things.. I sell on there from time to time as I get 100 free listings or $5000 in inventory listed every month... The problem I personally have with eBay is 1) eBay is expensive to sell on.. Plan on about 19% of your money handed out to them after it's all said and done.. with listing fees, FVF's, Payment Fees etc etc.. 2) people go to eBay to find a bargain.. They have flee market standards, LOL .. which in your case of just trying to move products and not so worried about profits.. might be okay for you.. Etsy takes out 5% of your sale.. in fees and I think 2.5% on payment processing.. still about 10% total because of listing fees etc.. People go to etsy more to find unique and handmade items.. while there are a few that get away with reselling China made stuff.. but with eBay there is no rules for resellers or handmade.. doesn't matter.. hence the flee market pricing competition.. LOL If you're only looking to move product that is piling up.. I'd suggest charities as Dee mentioned.. There is always a charity or goodwill that would love to take your items.. As JT said.. there is no half way selling... and doing it through an online venue could bite you.. The term of a business is to sell goods with intent to make a profit.. so even selling on eBay or whatever platform.. could get you if you make a profit.. and even if you don't make a profit.. be a good idea to keep track of spending etc so if they come looking for their tax money you have proof of non profit.. To sell to make a little profit low key and stay under the radar.. I'd suggest craigslist, facebook, and offerup etc type places... I do think there are thresholds where you can sell on ebay and other places as long as you stay under a certain amount of money.. they probably wouldn't bother a person selling 20-30 low priced items a year... as they are really after those that are making decent profits and they want their cut of those profits.. Legally your supposed to claim ANY and all income..

    Y no eBay?

I found that the minute I started selling my handmade items (jewelry) it became a job with hard work involved with listing, displays, taxes, etc. I have done both Ebay and still have a Etsy shop.. They both take a lot of time and sometimes cost more than what you sell. When I retired (again) from that and took up the hobby of scrolling, I decided not to sell anything. Well family and friends have enough "dust collectors" so I not enjoy making items for charity ( especially Toys for Tots). I can take my time, do what I want, and not keep hundreds of things under the table. JUST A THOUGHT.

    Y no eBay?

Kevin would probably be a good source of info for this question because he uses various platforms to sell his projects and is quite successful at it. There are some good threads in the business forum here that touch on selling at different venues that you might want to check out also. But will say this there is no half way thing if you are thinking of selling. If you want to do this legit you need tax id numbers and record keeping and whole lot other legistic paper work as well as inventory. To sell a few items on FB is possible Good luck.

    Y no eBay?

Iv never really been interested in selling any of my stuff.for the time put into a project and the price it would sell for ( imo) I would probably make about two bucks an hour lol. But I just enjoy making stuff. With that said I got projects piling up all over and my wife is not interested in any of it. I give some to family and friends but I hesitate cuz I don’t like to push on people who may feel obligated to take something they’re really not into anything and then feel as tho they have to display when I’m coming over lol. anyway I never sold anything on eBay but that’s my knee jerk reaction to go if I were to sell. I’m not interested in doing craft shows but I’m wondering why it seems no one here really sells on eBay i here Etsy more than anything. From what I know about Etsy it’s a store I’m just doing this for relaxing not sure I want to run a store. But I guess that’s the point of my post. I really don’t have any knowledge or experience with either. I would appreciate any input from u guys. Thx.

  18. Kevin, I've done a few in the past and probably need a refresher but a router inlay collar/guide is the way to go. The collar has a removable external ring for doing the inside and outside cuts. You make a template that the collar bushing can ride against and then establish the thickness or depth of the decorative piece you want to inlay into the cutting board. Then remove the external ring to cut the insert using the template. Leave the insert piece a little proud and after gluing and mounting sand flush. There are a "slew" of Youtube videos available on how to do this and Rockler sells a bushing kit. Have fun!

    Y no eBay?

There are free places, like Craigslist, Offerup and I think facebook has some avenues for selling not sure, I do not do facebook. But at least you may sell some, and you are not investing any money. I will add, I tried Craigslist and got what I expected,,, nothing. But the type of scrolling I do is very hard to sell in my area. I do pictures and they do not fit the decor of most homes. But other things, like the ornaments, puzzles, toys, etc. might do okay.

If you're thinking of using ebay or etsy then work out what fees will be charged and don't forget paypal charge as well if you use it. A lot of folk, myself included, have used facebook to sell stuff with no problems.

    selling my work

I don't make stuff for friends and family. They don't appreciate it. They might like it ok but I put a lot of passion into what I do and I think I deserve to be paid for it. If I want them to have something I just give it to them. I also don't do commission stuff. Again, people don't understand what is involved in what they think might be a simple piece.

  35. I have never used mineral spirits. Some time ago, I told this site that 3M 77 & 45 nozzles clog up between usage. Was told to remove the nozzle after spraying & throw it in MS. Looked online where I could buy it locally. True Value came up as the closest from here. A quart was the smallest container. That's enough to last me 4 more lifetimes. jerry
