Nothing special, but it has an interesting story.
GPscroller and 9 others reacted to jerry1939 for a topic
In 1994 Audrey & I built a home in the country outside of Marshalltown, Iowa. Have since retired & moved. Marshalltown has one of the prettiest Courthouses in the State. About a month ago an EF3 tornado went almost straight down Main St. The Courthouse lost it's steeple, all or parts of chimneys and decorative pieces on top. It was built in 1882 and the original molds were kept. They will be able to restore most of it. When 1 or more chimneys crumbled, it set off the sprinklers on all 3 levels, but no one knew it for a while. JBS/Swift pork packing plant is 1 of the 3 largest employers. 2 walls of the cooling room were blown off. They hauled 24 million pounds of cut up pork to the landfill. 24 million is 1/2 the normal tonnage that the landfill usually takes in annually. At the tail end of the tornado path, the National Weather Service stated that it was just slightly over a half mile wide. In addition to the pork, the landfill will be taking in all that debris also. I cut an image of the damaged Courthouse and glued/stapled it to a 11" X 14" flag. We donated it to the Community College and they agreed to permanently display it. 13.9 hours on the meter to cut it. jerry10 points -

I've seen some awesome inlay work here so since I have limited experience in inlay I thought I'd ask if anyone has done inlay in thick wood? I was asked to make a cutting board with an inlay of the shape of Michigan in it.. Most cutting boards available in the area are just cut in the shape of Michigan and thus they are odd shaped and tend to be smaller than the traditional cutting board.. If I can figure out how to do inlay on this project.. then I'm also going to make my inlaws in Texas a Michigan shaped one as well... I know they'll love it .. I figured I'd make the cutting boards about 1" thick.. probably a tough one to do since the way I know inlay is sort of stack cutting with a slight angle set on the saw to make the piece fit good.. Maybe a better option would be to slice the board on the bansaw.. do the inlay and glue it back together so I'm not working with such thick pieces? How would you do a project like this.. I've done inlay on thin 1/8 and 1/4 inch wood before but nothing like this.. Be a great opportunity to try the tilting head of my Excalibur2 points

Kevin, I've done a few in the past and probably need a refresher but a router inlay collar/guide is the way to go. The collar has a removable external ring for doing the inside and outside cuts. You make a template that the collar bushing can ride against and then establish the thickness or depth of the decorative piece you want to inlay into the cutting board. Then remove the external ring to cut the insert using the template. Leave the insert piece a little proud and after gluing and mounting sand flush. There are a "slew" of Youtube videos available on how to do this and Rockler sells a bushing kit. Have fun!2 points

Inlay Using Thick Wood?
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Done it with router. If doing with scrollsaw I always start with thicker wood then final piece needed so that when inlayed I can sand flat.2 points -
Good luck Kevin. I will be interested in seeing what the experts tell you. I haven't tried any inlay myself yet so know help. I know @Jim Finn is one of the inlay experts here in the Village. Perhaps he or others can give you good insight and help.2 points

my Hawk g4
lawson56 reacted to Clayton717 for a topic
This is the saw I bought from auction after asking the questions on here. After getting it home I realized it was a little bigger than expected and my shop was a little to small to add another tool. So I added a small addition to hold the Hawk. It looks to be in great shape. I broke the air blower hose when unloading that's why its a different color. It came with a magnifying light, and the small "side tray" but didn't get them back on before I took the pic. I haven't use it much yet. the blade change may take a little getting used to. I'm thinking of using this for my intarsia and my EX 21 for the fretwork for now.1 point -

my wonderful son works in computers outside DC. one of his friends is a graphic designer that is giving me a BIG discount because of my son. i like it more than the one i made. i haven't paid for the logo yet so i am only posting it for my friends here for now. ( printing at office depot $10.96) (he did not include the word "arts" in this first draft but i will have one with a black background as well and that will be the next banner)1 point -
Thanks Kevin. That's a new one on me. I just checked it out. It seems to limit a person to within 500 miles. I guess that's ok. I don't want to drive very far anyway.1 point

Clayton717 reacted to Scrappile for a topic
The G-4 is the one I think I would want. Solely based on forum discussions with other Hawk owners. I seldom see them in my end of the country. I missed out on one about a year ago. I think it was about double the price you said you paid for your! Congrats on yours,,, please let us know how you like it after some use.1 point -

Congratulations on your G4. I don't know anything about the G4 but being a Hawk you've got to be happy.1 point -
You know, if you don't have room for that Hawk. I can probably make a road trip to Ohio and take it off your hands. I hope you like it. Jim1 point

Nothing special, but it has an interesting story.
Scrappile reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Jerry not only is the story quite interesting and the court house cutting with the American flag an outstanding reminder to the people in Marshalltown and the people of Iowa of the destruction that was dealt to them by the tornado, but I see only one thing is all of this that is false. Are you asking yourself, "how could Dick know that I have stated something falsely, when he probably has never even seen or possible never heard of Marshalltown ?" If you are, then you are correct that I have never even heard of Marshalltown, Iowa until just now. But the falsehood still remains and that is in your title to this post when you said , "Nothing Special". Obviously this piece is very meaningful and special to all the town's people and it has become a reminder to all who view it. Thanks for your understanding of the importance of finding a way to honor part of our National history with your work. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
It isn't inlay, but if I wanted a cutting board with michigan on it I would do one side like a routed sign, and use the other side for the cutting board. Route in the design, put paint in the routed area, sand flat to remove any fuzzies or extra paint.1 point

That is kinda hat I was thinking about trying..and would be the only way I could do it most likely.. I don't have a router.. ( something on my list to get ) .. I do have a Bosh small hand held like trim router but imagine that would be quite a job for that little guy.. LOL1 point

I have done inlays with 1/2" board but never 1-inch. That doesn't mean it can't be done. The point may be - What does the other side of the board look like? Remember the inlay on one side of the board will be smaller (larger?) than the other side. When it comes to pointy shapes or small finger or fringe shapes, that can get a little weird. When I do inlays in my intarsia projects, I'll resaw the board I'm inlaying. That gives me two slices 3/8" - 1/2" thick. I use one of the slices and inlay the pattern into it. Once that's set up, I clean up the backside of the inlayed slice and laminate it back to the uncut slice. I now have an inlayed board, 3/4' - 1" thick, but the inlay is only 3/8" - 1/2" deep.1 point

My Take On A Camaro
frankorona reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
Since a few of you did the Steve Good Camaro.. I thought I'd do my take on a pattern I had and size it to be a Christmas ornament.. I can say.. I need a smaller drill bit for making this.. especially when making them this small.. The box it's in is 5-1/4 x 3 -3/4 so shrinking a pattern from what was originally designed for a large sign that would have it at 18 - 24 inch long.. LOL I thought it was tough when sized them at about 9 inch for the desk clock.... Anyway.. short day today so only made 16 of them plus some other ornaments.. only about 25 ornaments cut today..1 point -

I can't tell what is all the problems with it I have had so many problems with it the last couple of years and I just don't want to mess with it any more Every ti;m;e I fix something on it in a little while something else goes wrong. My wife tells me that I have had it for about 8 years . It's time to get a new one which I did. I guess I am just too old to mess with it. IKE1 point

I don't make stuff for friends and family. They don't appreciate it. They might like it ok but I put a lot of passion into what I do and I think I deserve to be paid for it. If I want them to have something I just give it to them. I also don't do commission stuff. Again, people don't understand what is involved in what they think might be a simple piece.1 point

Being in the paint business for 50 years we bought paint thinner by the 5 gallon size, was cheap, just before I retired you needed to take a mortgage out to purchase it, very expensive and hard to get, RJ0 points
