  3. I was busy sowing off my beautiful scroll saw artistry. Everyone was stunned at the beauty of it all. I was beaming as I realized I had just achieved status equal to Amazing Kevin. Then the darn cat woke me up. Dang it!

  4. G'day all, 2 more tissue boxes, I don't think I've shown this pattern before. The Rose is backed with green and red felt, the Cowboy black felt. I like backing him with black felt and glitter, looks like the stars at night, but i'd run out so a starless night is.

    Pin Chuck Substitute

G'day all, I noticed in the Q & A Forum there was a bit of discussion regarding pin chucks and holding 1/16th or smaller bits in your drill press. This is my method, A mate actually got me the chuck, however I have collected a few chucks (I always remove the chuck before chucking a US drill ) since and given them to blokes I know. Most 1/4" chucks will grip the small bits. I found a bolt that fitted in the threaded end of the chuck, cut the head of it and that is now the shank that goes into the drill press. A picture is worth a thousand words Cheers John

    my Hawk g4

This is the saw I bought from auction after asking the questions on here. After getting it home I realized it was a little bigger than expected and my shop was a little to small to add another tool. So I added a small addition to hold the Hawk. It looks to be in great shape. I broke the air blower hose when unloading that's why its a different color. It came with a magnifying light, and the small "side tray" but didn't get them back on before I took the pic. I haven't use it much yet. the blade change may take a little getting used to. I'm thinking of using this for my intarsia and my EX 21 for the fretwork for now.

    Pin Chuck Substitute

Great idea.. I ended up buying a small bit chuck from Mikes when I started using the small bits.. My press would hold the 1/16 great.. but when I started using the real small numbered bits it wouldn't.. Where can one get a metric chuck for those metric drill bits.. I have a whole set of metric bits brand new.. but my chuck is standard US

    Birthday Gift + one

Happy Birthday Marge! And congratulations on the new Pegas clamp. I guess if he really loved you he would have bought you a Hawk. Oh Heck, that's just me.

  13. The pin chuck I purchased just wasn't that good, had some wobble. I chucked that chuck..... in the garbage. I think John's idea would work great. My Jet drill press is a big one like 17" and the chuck closes all the way. The smaller drill press I use to use didn't.

    New Excalibur

Well, I waffled back and forth, but I finally took the plunge. I ordered the Excalibur from Home Depot. HD has a pretty good return policy, so if it's really bad, I can return it. Plus, it's on Sale for $799, which is helpful to my wallet. No matter what, it'll be an upgrade from my 16" Craftsman scroll saw I bought nearly 10 years ago...LOL.

  15. I use a chuck like John but mine came out of an egg beater hand drill and had a plain shaft so I just put that in the drill press chuck.

  18. This is what i did. I have the saw in my shop(a room in the garage) and the dust collector in the garage with all the tubing going through the wall. I bought a remote power switch so i could turn it on and off from in the shop. I can hear the dust collector but it doesn't bother me. I just turn up the radio

  21. Can you operate a dust collection outside of your scroll saw area, like in another room? If you have room to do the same, I have seen where a dust collection system was enclosed in an insulated closet. That would be pure luxury.

This is what I use on my 220VS ultra. I prefer it over the winged knob. Plenty of torque and easier on the fingers. See your local hardware store.

  23. I have the Fein also. i mount mine to the underside of my Excalibur table. I use a two hole 1 1/2" strap for copper tubing. Might be 1 1/4". I use the the threaded holes that are already in the table.

  25. I love my Fein. They do have a HEPA filter for it. It is only $104! The noise of the air sucking into my PVC pipe is what annoys me most... fact it might be louder than the vac. Don't know how that could be fixed. That aside, I am very happy with my setup. I use it on two saws, just switch the hose, but with a little effort I could fix to where I just turn a 1/4 turn value or two to switch back and forth.

  26. In 1994 Audrey & I built a home in the country outside of Marshalltown, Iowa. Have since retired & moved. Marshalltown has one of the prettiest Courthouses in the State. About a month ago an EF3 tornado went almost straight down Main St. The Courthouse lost it's steeple, all or parts of chimneys and decorative pieces on top. It was built in 1882 and the original molds were kept. They will be able to restore most of it. When 1 or more chimneys crumbled, it set off the sprinklers on all 3 levels, but no one knew it for a while. JBS/Swift pork packing plant is 1 of the 3 largest employers. 2 walls of the cooling room were blown off. They hauled 24 million pounds of cut up pork to the landfill. 24 million is 1/2 the normal tonnage that the landfill usually takes in annually. At the tail end of the tornado path, the National Weather Service stated that it was just slightly over a half mile wide. In addition to the pork, the landfill will be taking in all that debris also. I cut an image of the damaged Courthouse and glued/stapled it to a 11" X 14" flag. We donated it to the Community College and they agreed to permanently display it. 13.9 hours on the meter to cut it. jerry

Congrats on the new purchase, Clayton, I hope you enjoy it and I really hope I run across some sort of good deal on a scroll saw soon. I'm pretty cheap so, it may take me some time to find a saw that I like in my budget. God Bless! Spirithorse

    my Hawk g4

Yeah, I have to say even after using my 226VS for 3 weeks every day my chubby fingers still have a hard time getting in and tightening the upper blade clamp. I might start looking at doing something about that. Other than that issue, I'm loving mine. I hope you get the blade change and tension sorted out.

  39. Yes that is absolutely and option.. I'm thinking about putting the vac upstairs right above the scroll saw area.. then I could plumb the pvc through the floor.. and I have the upstairs all insulated etc too so it would certainly be much quieter than having the vac next to me.. LOL.. I don't think the higher end vacuums are all that loud though.. Maybe louder than I really think.. but just as an example.. I ran the Dbl app at the grocery store today.. pretty much was running at 50 -60 dbl just walking through the isles.. then when I got up at the checkout the beeping noise as they scan the items at the register the app showed 72dbl.. Those higher end vacs claim to be 62dbl.. which is the same as the me sawing a stack of ornaments.. so I really don't think one of those dust extractors would be much if any more noisy than sawing on the saw.. BTW.. Having fun measuring the sounds of things with that app.. have a few things I want to try.. like.. riding the lawn tractor.. my wife snoring

The G-4 is the one I think I would want. Solely based on forum discussions with other Hawk owners. I seldom see them in my end of the country. I missed out on one about a year ago. I think it was about double the price you said you paid for your! Congrats on yours,,, please let us know how you like it after some use.

    Another 3 Tissue Boxes

Another 3 tissue boxes hot of the press (out of the spray booth). The patterns in these are ones that came with the basic box pattern I purchased many years ago, to see how they fitted them to the front of the boxes. Curiosity hasn't killed me yet, but it has given me few close calls
