  1. Took me all day today to make these guys. These are my favorite ornaments I have made yet. Designer is Bruce Worthington. He just put these patterns on the market a couple of weeks ago.

    Oak lid boxes

Thought I'd make a couple of boxes with some off cuts laying around while the CNC was engraving a pattern in the lid. Yes I might be using this a lot it's great to be doing other things while my little robot does it's thing. Roly

    Unique Vehicles

2 of my latest cuttings. Cut from 3mm hoop pine ply using FD #3 Spiral and Pegas #3 mod. Framed with Pine stained to colour and 3 coats of 30% gloss lacquer. The 1970 Falcon 351GT was the fastest 4 door production sedan in the world. They are worth a small fortune if you are lucky enough to still own one. The pattern is mine made for me from my photo by a mate. The Indian (That bloody Indian) I swore quite a few times cutting that. The pattern is by Sam Custodio. Both cuttings are A3 size

    For WayneMahler

I've done the pattern that you made for me and although I'm not happy with my work, the pattern is awesome. So would like to say "many, many thanks for your time and patience". This was done on my little Pin End saw and I've never done anything like this before, but I'm hoping to do it again on my 'new' saw once it's been set up for me.

  6. Just done a two day craft fair at Papplewick Pumping Station, http://www.papplewickpumpingstation.co.uk with my 5 yr old grandson and between us we managed to cut a Giraffe (he peddled) as well as some keyrings and other stuff on a Hobbies A1 treadle saw. So as a thank you for his help I made him this Steve Good Toy. ball toy.mp4

  7. Kinda defeats the whole purpose for buying a Jet in the first place... But, I think you are correct. It took me a little while to get use to the removable bottom clamp. Now it is second nature and I actually prefer it... It's what a person gets use to and is comfortable with.

  8. At some point Hawk redesigned the arms on their saws to give them more strength.. it is mentioned in one of their videos on their web site.. I'm guessing this might be what you are seeing with these two saws.. Do the arms look the same? If I remember right one style of their arms had hollowed out holes through them to lighten them up.. and the other style they did like an I beam down to lighten it up.. and give it more strength..

    I'm fried... LOL

I am officially FRIED! Whirlwind 8 days... Huge 2 day event last weekend and a new 1 day event today. Fried literally and figuratively... it was HOT today, pure misery, but sales were good so it wasn't a total loss. Here's the breakdown... Last Saturday - 9 hours Last Sunday - 5 hours Today - 7 hours 21 total selling hours. Total of 192 puzzles sold. Average of 9 per hour = one every 7 minutes. Exhausting! Yet fruitful. LOL I have another big event in 3 weeks. I'll skip my weekly farmers market between now and then, I'm truly burnt out right now, besides, I need to restock, my inventory is very low and the holiday season is sneaking up on me with several events already lined up. Pictures of today's event - 135 vendors, nice quality stuff that I saw during a quick walkthru during setup. Iggy

    MCCAIN

Honoring MCCAIN for his service to the State of Arizona and our nation. On the day of his funeral, I decide to cut a plaque of him. I think I could have picked a lighter board for this one, but I thought it would look nicer this way, but now... if I was to do it over, I would cut it on a lighter colored piece. John McCane 1936 to 2018. Thank you for your outstanding military service and your dedication to the citizens of America Dick heppnerguy

  15. I agree with Paul a lot is what you get used to. Sometimes it's hard to change. I tried the Jet a little over a year ago. I really like the top blade clamp and as I am a top feeder so the bottom clamp was okay as well. The saw I received vibrated so bad as to be unusable. I talked with the factory several times and we tried everything they could think of but nothing helped. I returned it and they sent another one. It was a lot better but still had quite a bit of vibration it would probably been fine to keep but other than the blade clamp system there was really no difference between the Jet and the EX21 or ST21 as far as the machine and mechanical parts, the tables are a little different, in fact I would think that the motor and parallel link system was exactly the same on the Jet as it is on the EX and ST. I returned that Jet as well and went back to my EX21 until this last spring I purchased a ST21. I still have the EX but use the ST almost exclusively. I really like the larger table once I got used to it. Nice Saw. grizz Oregon

    Stand or Sit

Both, my Hegner is the perfect height for me to stand at and saw. Then when my legs get tired, I go to my Hawk and sit down and cut. Then when my fanny gets tired, I can stand up and saw some more on the Hegner.

  25. Melanie's explanation is great, I guess I was typing as she was posting. I have added a bit more to that. In a nut shell, a typical way is you get a pattern that is in a .DXF format (it is a universal drawing file data transfer format like .JPG is for pictures) Most of the patterns we buy are just a drawing, that drawing has no coordinate or dimensional information. As an example a wooden gear clock pattern published in a SSWWC magazine. the pattern is printed in a 1:1 scale but has no real information. The original was designed in a CAD program like Autocad using specific points, arcs and circles with precise coordinates for start and end points (X,Y coordinates) that is the information needed by the CNC machine. The Autocad design software or any like it allow you to save this data and transfer it in the . The DXF file has all of the dimensional information that will be imported into the drawing program of choice being used to run the the CNC router or laser. Easel being one of the free programs, it comes with the Xcarve machine. If you want 3D routing it gets more complicated and you usually have purchase a higher end program. The drawing program like Easel allows you to put in information like cutter diameter, material thickness, start points etc. It then converts it to the machine language that will control your router. Typically G-code https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-code this tells the router where to go, raise/lower turn on the router or laser etc. There is software especially in the laser cutter world that automatically converts an image into a file that the laser can use. You see these Kiosks at the malls that take a photo and etch it into wood fro you. As a scroll saw user you are converting the images in your head and moving the material in the proper directions to follow the lines. Bottom line is, you need to be computer savvy and a bit of a mechanical junkie.

  27. Yes that top clamp on the Jet is intriguing, however there are enough people that don't like it that Pegas makes a blade clamp to replace it. I haven't read enough understand why.

You did a terrific job, just remember, you have not been scrolling long, your did it with pinned blades and lastly lettering is not the easiest thing to scroll. Oh and one more thing, we are our own worst critics. Now take another look at it and say I DID THAT. Marg

  39. If you go to the Hawk web site they have a couple of videos on setting up the saw.. they also talk about some of the upgrades they have done over the years etc.. I thought they had three or four videos that gave more history on the older saws.. but maybe that was a dream, LOL.. as now they primarily talk about the difference between the Ultra saw and the new BM series saws... I think each video is around 20 minutes but there can be a lot to learn from these if you have interest in some of the things they've done to improve the saws etc.. For the videos you'll have to scroll down a little ways.. http://www.bushtonmanufacturing.com/WebsitePages/The-Hawk-Scroll-Saw.html

  40. Yes, Kevin is exactly right. I believe I mentioned that. You can plainly seen the design change in the pictures. By the looks of it Mr. Les, the second picture is the newer design, but JT would be more apt to know.

  41. Gota ask, you like the way the blade is changed, doesn't that mean you have removable bottom clamp and you take it out to put a new blade in? That narrows it to three saw that I know of, Hawk, Hegner and Jet. Of those three, the Hegner and Hawk will be around the longest... coarse if you are my age, the saw does not have to last too long!!

    I'm fried... LOL

Glad you had a great event. You might wish to look into using an old car battery and an inverter to get you some power so that you can run some fans. It is amazing what a slightly cooler stream of air from your booth will do for sales especially on those blistering days. Thanks for sharing this with us. DW

  43. I have had several saws in the last twenty years. Several cheap ones that are not worth mentioning . I had a Dremel that I used for years that worked quite well then a Dewalt that was much better then bought a new EX21 that was very good. I bought a Hegner for a backup saw but it just wasn't for me. I have not tried the Hawk and like Scrappile I would like too. I now have a Seyco St21 and my EX21. The Seyco is my everyday saw and I have become to love it. Only if you tilt your saw a lot it takes more time than the Ex does. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the upper end saws it just depends on your needs for scrolling. I do have to mention that Ray at Seyco is very good at backing his saws and availability for parts should you need them for the EX and ST. Good luck on your decision. Scrollingforsanity Oregon
