  2. I have quickly become a fan of one of our newest SSV family, Jason Henry of Washington State. As many of you have discovered, Jason makes some really great and exciting patterns and I just had to try one of them. So after a couple of days in my shop, I knocked this one out. I am going to attempt to make a frame for it. It is a little larger then I usually cut and there was a lot of detail in the pattern. In fact so much that I sort of got lost as to what a couple of parts were all about. I did modify it a little, as a result. It was a challenging piece to cut but I like the way it came out. I used a 3/0 spiral blade to cut in and I only broke one small piece at the beginning. I hope to cut more of his patterns before too long. I hope you all enjoy this pattern as much as I enjoyed cutting it Dick heppnerguy

    Chess anyone?

A few months ago our local Windsor Plywood did a custom job out of two inch aromatic cedar. The scraps ended up in the bargain bin for $3.00/lb, too good a deal to pass up. Played chess when I was younger and had always liked the pattern for chess pieces that Sue Mey has. So decided to give it a whirl. Got some cut and showed them to a friend and he ordered a set out of walnut and aspen. Finished his and then did my light players out of some more of my scrap material (really nice grain soft wood). The first pic is of Kings and Queens of each kind of wood. Walnut on the left, then aspen, aromatic red cedar and then the mystery wood. The second pic is of my friend's set with a display case I threw together for his birthday this month. Third pic is of some the cedar pieces to show the colouring I love. Jeff

    Bike accessories.

I bought a new bicycle about 3 weeks ago now. My old one was a better quality bike; but, had never quite fit me right. So I was going to get a new one if I sold it. I did, so I did. This one had the things I wanted anyway, well, sort of. It had an ugly piece of metal hanging in the middle and a short platform on the front and the rear carrier was also just a platform that was also too short to be of any real use. The first thing I did was make a longer rear platform. I liked what it came out like and decided to make a front tray. I used decent sized screw eyes on the bottom to maake a tiedown spot. Then on one of the tool box excavations trips I found some screw eye bolts. Now the rear had to come off again to add them. hen this was completed, I read the comments of this project on Lumber Jocks and one had suggested a sign for the middle. Well T & E designs was given that project. It rolled around in my head for a while. Here is what came from that. Scroll saw was used somewhere on all 3 modifications too. The entire project was made from shop scrap. The wolves and moons are actually hickory flooring scraps. the rest just generic plywood that was lying around. The rear platform is an unknown, I think maple; but, certainly not sure. It was fun and I even kept the original pieces hanging in the shop, in case sometime someone wants to change it back. When I cut the wolves, I had a piece of plastic between the wood slabs to make a template at the same time.

    Two more to frame

Saw the owl posted by @neptun and had to cut it. 1/4" BB 9 X 10" cut completely with Sawbird 2/0 spiral (am getting used to these darn spiral things lol). The baby angel is a @Kenny Hopkins pattern, 7 X 13", three in 1/8" BB. Jeff

  8. I have been trying to get a bunch of projects done outside, so I haven't had much time at the saw lately. There was on and off rain all day yesterday so I decided to cut a quick project. Steve Good pattern, walnut with a pine base. Cut with F/D #5 skip reverse. Finished with spray lacquer.

  9. and NOT the easiest thing to build. reason not easy to build? welp, ive lived in michigan my entire life. been a lions fan as long as i can remember. so NOt easy to say,"sure thing!" now the funny part: its for a friend that lives in seattle and is a seahawks fan. her husband is from wisconsin and a packers fan. we lions fans arent fond of green bay. hes a mason and has some days hes hurtin and wants to kick back with his feet up. however, they have a pair dogs- an american bulldog and a heeler. big dogs! buuuut, they go crazy when he lifts the footrest on his recliner. so hes not able to kick back too comfortably. hopefully this helps him and he likes my little lions touch to it.

    Torrified maple comb

Made about 24 combs now and I have found the wood I like best. I have tried oak, bulletwood, ipe, cherry and regular maple. Torrified maple is by far the best choice.

  11. I like to cut Steve Good's patterns and I also support his page , year in and year out, as I do The Scroll Saw Village. I so appreciate all Travis and Steve do for our hobby. This was a quick and easy pattern to cut so I thought it would be fun just to cut it and add it to my shop wall. Dick heppnerguy

    New Scroll Saw

Well my Wife and I went to Ky to visit my Parents over the Labor Day wknd, and my kid Bro had a big surprise for me.A slightly used scroll saw!! It's a Porter Cable.I thought it was just like mine, but I found out it wasn't.It only has 2 speeds.Off and slow. But you can't look a gift horse in the mouth. My old one was running a bit ragged,so I am Happy to get a almost new one.I t will just take a bit longer to cut my plaques, which matches my speed as of late.lol.

    Another portrait

I was going through some pictures of our last trip to Las Vegas and found a picture of one of our company partners and his wife. We were having dinner at the Cosmopolitain. Great time.! 1/8" BBPW on 1/4" backer and lacqured. The cutting definitely goes faster than cleaning up the pattern. I always do the eyes first because if I screw them up, I might as well start again.

    Navy Plaque

My Grandson enlisted in the Navy about 4 months ago and is now in San Diego. His mother is coming to Arizona tomorrow and on Friday we are driving there to meet up with him. I decided last evening to cut him a plaque. I looked through several Navy Plaques and decided on this Steve Good pattern. I thought all the chain centers were going to take me a long time to cut but the whole item was less then three hours. That surprised my some, for sure Dick heppnerguy

    Stand or Sit

There are three kinds of foot switches. The most common is the kind where you step on it the saw goes and when you take your foot off it stops. This is a deadman switch. A less common type is the ones where you step on it once it goes and it continues to go until you step on it again. They are called continuous run switches. The third type is a speed control foot switch. This is the kind that the further you press down on the pedal the faster it goes. Like on a sewing machine. The last type SHOULD NEVER BE USED ON A SCROLL SAW.

    Please Explain...

Happnes to me almost daily. I have to go around this building out to my garage to paint and it will be dead calm inside, soon as I round the corner its like a hurricane. srs. Drives my nuts, blows all the pieces everywhere. i learned to put everything into an old guitar box and when I get oyt there I have a little kids tent that I set up, set it on a table and pout the stuff inside to paint it., Still sometimes the tent will boow away when I turn my back even though iu weight it down on each corner with weights.

    Stand or Sit

I sit mostly and it suits for most jobs. The problem occurs when I'm doing a large piece and I have to swing it to cope with the cutting. I can only cope with holding my breath in for so long before I have to push the stool back and stand back from the machine. Bob

    anyone air brushing?

I use an airbrush. Its fun to play with but there is a pretty good learning curve. Bought a kit on amazon that came with 3 different airbrushes, compressor and some basic paints. I mainky use the brush that is a top feed where you out the paint in the little bowl affixed to the top of it. Seems to work the best, The real key to it is to get some reducer. You need to mix a fiw drops with the paint so it comes out properly. Also you need to clean the airbrush after using it so it doesnt get messed up so some cleaner would not hurt either. Its hard to to large areas because you need to go over them a number of times to get an even coating. Works great for smaller pieces and shading though. I painted this one with the airbrush.

    Stand or Sit

This is something you have to try out and see what works best. Try scrolling while sitting at different heights. Try tipping the saw different amounts. It depends so much on the saw, the chair and the person that there is no way to know without trying it.

Wow! I see what you mean. And, I love dogs. As well as most animals. You do live in Heaven. Not sure about the "cold" weather though. Thanks for posting. We live in a mobile home park about a mile from the Pacific ocean. Here are a couple of pics of our "retirement" home in Huntington Beach, California, U.S.A. I have a very small shop at the end of the driveway. Ray

    anyone air brushing?

I used to play with them a little.. never did get real good at it.. but then.. I was only about 10 years old.. My older brothers used them to do custom paint jobs on cars.. when done they'd let me play with the leftover paint in some scrap hoods and fenders etc.. My father used them on paper to create scenery for his scroll saw projects.. he'd paint the top of the backer blue for the sky and green for grass etc etc.. and then glue it to the back of his cuttings.. made them really pop with a scene on the background of some of those cuttings he did.. He played a lot with the 2 - 3 dimensional cuttings where you cut think wood and create from several types of wood to create a dimensional scene..

  50. I had a very cheap venturi style from Harbor Freight, but it was a bear to clean and I got frustrated with it. Thinking of buying a gravity style. I used it for small jobs and accent colorings.
