  1. Just had to share. I actually made my first ever pattern. My undying thanks to Travis and his video, which I must have watched a hundred times. Watching the video on one tab and having Inkscape on the other tab, Travis talked me through it stage by stage. I'm really quite proud of myself

  2. Just a few months ago I got myself a little saw. Joined this forum to see what could be done and how. I showed you my little workspace. Then I read so many threads on here that I was inspired, so I bought a new saw and my other half has now given me more space I wouldn't have even dreamt of all of this if it wasn't for you guys, so thank you so much. All I have to do now is to keep practicing until I can make something that looks as good as some of the things I've seen on here

    Fretwork Box

Having a lot of fun making boxes lately. The pattern for this one comes from Craftsmanspace The fretwork is plywood, backed with purple card and 3mm MDF. The same card is used to line the box interior. 24 x 21 x 9cm or 10 x 8 x 3.5 inches approx made from an old drawer box. Thanks for looking. Rob

    REMEMBER 9/11

I do hope we all take a few minutes and remember 9/11 this Tues. It had an effect on all of us and I am sure it was one of those events we all remember where we were on that crystal clear blue sky day. The aftermath is something we are still paying the price for. Wrote a chapter in the history books that I hope never happens again but it is a reminder of how fragile we all are.

    Good luck Iggy

Please pray for Iggy. He lives right by the projected landfall site of Florence. She looks like a bad one. I am also in the direct path but I am 150 miles from the landfall site. By the time it gets to me it should have pretty much blown herself out. Now if the ground can handle a foot or more of rain.

  8. Well I finally finished this portrait for my friend who's husband passed away. I want to thank Ron (Joleet) for doing this pattern from a very poor picture I had. I don't know how he did it but I was able to get something out of it. Hope she likes it. It was a tough one to do with all the hair and the eyes. I just have to frame it and cut it to size. It will be an 8x10.

    67´ Mustang GT500

Hello everyone again!! This time I bring you a very special cut for me: this beautiful 67´ Mustang GT500. As soon as I saw the design uploaded by @blights69 (so thanks for sharing it), I knew I have to do it, so there is the result It´s made from 5mm plywood, and with a frame made from pine, with a black back. I only made one change: the word "muscle" for "Mustang" and his horse. I left the natural colour of the wood, and really like the contrast. I hope you like it too, cause this one was very emotional to me.

  11. Nice space. And lots of room for wood storage under the bench! You are going to need to make a blade holder to hold all the different blades you will be collecting. A spray booth for finishing, a little compressor for blowing things off, a sanding area and a sander with some sanding mops..... etc., etc. Your husband may as well start planning on a expansion of his shop!

  13. Tony had his own wood yard for many years and I have 8 dogs and they have sawdust down to keep things clean in the kennels, so sawdust is something we are well used to. It's just me invading his domain (workshop) that he's coming to terms with

  22. We definitely didn't learn enough. If everyone can remember, we became a united country that day, we all helped each other anyway we could. 17 years later, we are a country where HATE is running rampant...where did all the love go. I think we all know the answer to that. Please take a minute and remember the 3,000 lost souls and the responders who continue to die every day because they gave the ultimate gift of love. THANK YOU.

  23. Hi , I got my first scroll saw a couple of weeks back and thought its about time to stop practicing doing wiggly lines and try to make something I have Kathy Wise's book so tried to follow along with her beginners project and she said if its your first time use a soft wood to make it easier to do, so I bought a bit of Red Cedar, I hadnt seen Cedar before , I guess we dont grow it in the UK, but it cut and sanded easy and it smells great when its cut I know I have a lot to learn and you will see that in my picture but all in all I was quite pleased with my first atempt. Its had just one coat of varnish which I will rub down when its dry and give a couple more coats but here it is so far Remember its my first try so be gentle with me Don

    Older Hegner Upgrade?

I have two Hegners with the tension relief in the back of the saw and even on my old 1986, 25" saw I can reach it OK. I like the Heger saws because they have durable induction motors. I would not recommend a saw with induction motors for fretwork though. The stopping and starting will kill the capacitor. A universal motor can do the stop and staring required for fretwork much better. (I do not do fretwork) My saws are both bottom feeders so are not good for fretwork anyway.

  29. as someone said if your going to use acrylic paints do yourself a favour and get them from an art store like Michales or Deseers etc. they cover better, usually with only one coat, they dry much faster, they don't smell near as bad as the cheap paints and they don't lose the color when you apply a coat of poly even when the cheap paint is seemingly dry. I get mine from Michael's and I buy the large bottles of the colors I use most, they are 12.99 and I always get a 40 or 50 % coupon so really they are well worth it. Paint from walmart and dollar stores are just not worth the trouble IMO. I do think I am going to try spray paint like Crupiea says he uses...

    Roaring Lion

I haven't been out in the shop much lately as I was having to do a bunch of house fixer ups after getting my house redone with vinyl siding. Suddenly everything around your house looks old and needs to be updated. But I needed to do something for the NC State Fair this October so I cut this out. I still need to make the frame but the cuts are done on this Charles Dearing pattern. The color in the back is not what it will be. Still deciding if I'll use black as usual or something else. This was cut from a 1/4" thick piece of cherry. It is 15 1/2" x 13 1/4" I will be building the frame from some yellowheart I have. Pattern is available here: https://www.bearwood.com/Stunning-Lion-Portrait.html

  31. Yes a pin punch is what you need or a steel rod that size. I actually did not hammer the roll pin out but use pliers to push the rod into pin and push the pin out. Did not want to hammering on that arm. Not good. This photo shows the section I replaced because the tension handle would pop open due to wear on the wedge portion. Was easy to do.

  32. Nice job, Roly. It looks like a true winner for your Christmas decorations. I was eyeing this pattern but decided it used too much wood for my supply and I have a pretty good sized wedding project coming up soon. So maybe another time for me. You did make me rethink my plans a little though Dick heppnerguy

    Chess anyone?

A few months ago our local Windsor Plywood did a custom job out of two inch aromatic cedar. The scraps ended up in the bargain bin for $3.00/lb, too good a deal to pass up. Played chess when I was younger and had always liked the pattern for chess pieces that Sue Mey has. So decided to give it a whirl. Got some cut and showed them to a friend and he ordered a set out of walnut and aspen. Finished his and then did my light players out of some more of my scrap material (really nice grain soft wood). The first pic is of Kings and Queens of each kind of wood. Walnut on the left, then aspen, aromatic red cedar and then the mystery wood. The second pic is of my friend's set with a display case I threw together for his birthday this month. Third pic is of some the cedar pieces to show the colouring I love. Jeff

I understand there can be material failures but I found it so odd. I use to get all blades from Mike and never had a problem and that was thousands of blades over the years. This last batch just does not seem the same. Now I bought a few gross so will see how they all play out but I find myself changing blades way more often and when that one broke I was doing nothing special and that is why it really took me by surprise. I can see if I were stressing it and making super tight turns but no. As I said we all been there and we move on. I know I have been sawing a long time when I went through the many gross of blades I got from Mike finally. Miss that man. He was one of the good guys.

I have noticed if I am using #3 and larger blades in the cold weather I break more blades. I started keeping my blades in a warm area like in the house they seem to last longer. It seems to be related to expansion and contraction of the cold blades . Also if the problem doesn’t stop l recheck my tension after a minute or so. It does help.

  46. You can't go wrong introducing a child to the wonderful world of wood working, and I can't think of a better safer tool to start with than a scroll saw. They can quickly learn to make simple projects which is so important because of the length of their attention span. Some kids will take more to the craft then others but the main thing is you are building memories that will last a lifetime.

  49. I've always used Delta Creamcoat acrylic paints. I must get them from Joanne's or Michael's. They are very thick. Have a long shelf life if sealed correctly. Thin easily and clean up with with tap water (although I use distilled water when thining). They comes in a gazillion colors. I get them in 2oz soft plastic bottles, I can squeeze out a few drops or remove the cover and get a larger volume. Finally, my bottles are labeled, Made in the USA.
