  2. I started this Sam Custodio pattern last week but we had our younger daughter come for a week long visit and we all went to San Diego where we spent the weekend visiting at the Naval Base and spending time with one of our Grandsons. We took in some other sites and Thursday morning we took our daughter to the airport. That same night we picked up our other daughter and her daughter and they are here from Oregon for 10 days. Yesterday we all went to Tombstone and had a fun time and today the girls went and got a manicure so I was able to get back into my shop and finish cutting this tiger pattern. I still need to finish it and make a frame for it. We are leaving Monday for the Grand Canyon and then to Vegas for a couple of days and then to Lake Havasu and the next day it is a trip back home. After a couple of more days our daughter and granddaughter will be flying back to Portland and so you can see why I have not had much shop time lately. I have been wanting to cut this pattern for some time and I have a few lined up to do when things settle down a little Dick heppnerguy

  3. Just finished up this LED lighted Bears sign, cut the "C" on the scroll saw in 2 parts out of a 1x8....made templates for repeatability....attached together with pockets hole screws/glue......the "C" has 3/4" spacers to give it space between the back & the "C"....Blue LED lights wired to back of "C" reflecting off the white back with blue pin strips.....23" W X 21.5"T......looks great w/o lights, but the blue LED's brings it to life....the blue gets bolder the darker it gets...….runs on 110v....was fun to make.....comments as always....thank you

    Had a try at 3D

Hi , Being new to scroll saw I'm trying the different types of scrolling to see what I like Well I have had me a try at intarsia and I liked that so now I thought I would give a 3D / compound cutting a try . I didnt think it would be very succesfull so only used a bit of 2x2 softwood from the diy shop , Didnt see the point in wasting expensive wood , but I was suprised , it came out not too bad so I will have to have another try using a nice hard wood Don

  5. Had some pieces of scrap Wenge that was always in my way, so I decided to glue it together with cherry and cut a bowl. It did turn out not too bad, a little bit out of line because after I applied the pressure it moved a little bit well nobody I saw perfect. LOL

  10. Hey everybody... My name is Jason I'm from just outside Las Vegas Nevada. I came here because I'm about ready to jump into the world as a Scroller and what better place to come for valuable information than a whole place full of scrollers. I have tons of stuff I want to learn along this journey and I'm interested in meeting people here as well. Thanks for having me guys and I look forward to running into you all. Happy scrolling.

    Types of Scrolling?

I wasn't aware you could cut metal and other stuff. That opens up my mind to a whole other world now. Thank you for that information. Would you be able to do stainless steel kind of stuff? I guess it's all about finding the right blade

Thanks so much everyone for thinking about me and the family. I had posted a couple of updates in the Coffee House forum, sorry I didn't look here as well. Florence hit 10 miles north of my house, then the eye drifted down directly over my town of Carolina Beach. So far, everything seems to be OK, waiting on word about our house. Less rain than expected and a lot less than other areas in the state. We evacuated to South Carolina and the storm followed us here, but we never lost power and have been sitting around waiting til we can go home, likely Monday or Tuesday. We were very lucky and hoping that continues as we await power to be restored and find everything OK upon our return. Iggy

  19. Absolutely you can cut plastics such as records as someone mentioned. There are those that do a frost look in plastic with the same patterns. just sand the project with sandpaper. Metals also. Non Ferrous metals to be clear. Not stainless or at least I never tried. Here is a cross I have done and all the brass was cut on the scrollsaw and I used Jewelers blades. I actually cut a quarter in half ( heads one side and tails other ) using my scrollsaw and that material is who knows what along with silver.

I hope the water does not rise more. Floods are very messy to clean. Glad you don't have a basement. Be safe.

  22. Hey that's great! glad you got it straightened out.. was worried about you burning up the circuit board or motor running it the way is was.. as that erratic speed jumping around like that can burn things up... Don't ask how I know that

  23. @TerryC you could buy the magnetic overlay for the Seyco, I think it is around $20. You might have to trim it a little because the Seyco table is a little bigger. I gave mine to @heppnerguy and he might tell us if it worked on his Ex. I really appreciate Ray even more now after reading yours and Travis' posts. I bought my Ex from Ray and my Seyco also and they were tuned perfect right out of the box. Packaged very well also.

  24. When you say types of scrolling there in my eye is no such thing. There are different projects that can be made and you named one. But basically the scrollsaw can cut wood metal plastics like other tools such as a tablesaw, jigsaw, bandsaw and so forth. What makes a scrollsaw unique is the way it can do these things and the one thing that jumps out above all is the ability to do fret work where you thread a small thin blade in a hole anywhere on a work piece and continue to cut. It cuts the tighest curves ever. So if the project you are working on require these things then a scrollsaw is the tool or a hand fret saw. So to me the question is what type projects can be made using a scrollsaw.

    Types of Scrolling?

Toys and puzzles are great things and compound cutting. If you are new to the saw start with something easier. The puzzles by Judy Peterson are great and kids love them. Intarsia can be difficult and you need good cutting skills. You will also make scrap like the rest of us when things do not work out.

  27. @Travis Thanks for the reply. Sorry I didn’t get back sooner but things but busy ( I could have sworn I retired last month ). Im glad you found all of your hardware in the box. I found most of mine but some made it out of the bottom of the box. I think they need to rethink how they package these especially at the price. I do love the stand it is very solid. I still have some tweaking to do on mine then I should be good to go. I did have to center the blade in the clamps, then loosen the table and center the blade in the table opening. The blade wasn’t square to the table so I took care of that. Now what I need to do is move the motor and get the blade to rock a little less, that will be today’s project. I did move it a little a couple days ago but it didn’t do much so I guess I’ll remove the 3 screws and try moving it more. After that I should be good. I’m also a bit slow at getting the blade in the clamps correctly but that will get easier with practice. I would like to try and find a magnetic overlay for the table. Terry

    Burma Shave

Hi Ray. Thanks, but you recommended jing to me sometime ago. I googled Burma Shave. It took me to a Smithsonian site which had a collection of signs one of which I captured with jing and printed it. The image is 3.5" X 8.25". I'll take it Office Max tomorrow and have them enlarge it 150% which will make it about 5.5" X 12". I'm excited to cut it. Only because it brings back memories.

    Estate Sale Saw

I posted a week or so ago about a estate sale that had a Hegner saw.. I told them if it doesn't sell for more than $75 I would give the $75 for it... go figure.. it went for $80, LOL.. Somehow through all the stuff they gave me boxes of blades and pattern books etc.. I ended up getting a box of Hegner parts.. a few blade clamps and some maybe tension springs?? they are a rod type thing that zig zags back and forth and looking at pictures of Hegners it's at the back of the saw.. whole bag of them.. do they wear out? not really sure what it is.. Then there are some other odds and ends some thumb screws with springs.. thinking they are the knob and spring that goes up at the front upper arm..

    Estate Sale Saw

Thanks Wayne.. I never ended up with the saw.. just parts to one.. and honestly don't know what model saw the parts go to.. I know they had 3-4 other saws.. brand is kind of unknown.. but suspect the other ones was Hengers too.. The one I know he had was a 14" saw.. Don't know what I'll ever do with the parts I got in the box of misl. stuff.. but if anyone wants it I might mail it out to them for shipping cost.. I'll probably take some pictures of the parts I have in a few days and see if anyone wants them.. Hegner parts don't do a Hawk, EX, and DeWalt owner any good.. LOL Also ended up with a several Olsen blades that I won't use.. so I'll post those too.. They are quite big blades.. thinking like 7 tooth per inch or so. must be like a #12 lol or bigger if they have bigger..

  47. I think that is just the nature of how plywood works.. I buy it in the 60" x 60" sheets and cut it to size as needed... even though I use the measure once cut twice rule.. or is that measure twice cut once... anyway somehow it still comes up short... just like my wallet

  49. You are correct I missed that. Alex Fox has/had this jeep as a free pattern. I did it with my Grandson. I could not find any of his free patterns at his Etsy site but you could message him and ask him if it is still available. It was an easy cut and you watch his video to put it together.

  50. They've been undersizing wood for years. Take a caliper to the home center sometime and check all the plywoods. They never measure out to what they are supposed to be. We have been getting screwed on most everything for a long time. I just realized that you were referring to the overall dimensions and not the thickness. My bad. It is strange though that they would cut it smaller than advertised. It must come down to the loss of wood because of the kerf of the saw blade. Hmmmmmm.
