    Steve Good cut

Needed to get out of the house and away from...family...for a while, so I cut this Steve Good on a bit of scrap I had leftover from another project. It was meant to be....the scrap was about 1/8" larger than the template. I'm going to leave it as it is, unframed, and put some magnets on the back and stick it up on a cabinet over my desk at work. I think it's pretty accurate. LOL

  3. My first intarsia was the goldfish from Kathy Wise book and it came out ok but was probably the simplest pattern there is as its all from one piece of wood so it cant really fail to line the cuts up together . It was time to get out of my comfort zone so... My second attempt is Kathy's mice and cheese which was a lot more challenging as its made from more than one variety of wood so it was down to me to make them fit together properly The Mice I made from American Cherry the inside of their ears are made from Poplar ( its a nice wood to work with and the least expensive of the hard woods here in England) The cheese is also poplar and I stained it with a home made dye . I went to the supermarket and got some Turmeric spice and had read that if I mix a little with water it would make a good yellow stain. Instead of water I used Iso Propyl Alcohol ( rubbing alcohol) and the turmeric dissolved in it easily , more important is that unlike water it dries in seconds because the alcohol evaporates so fast. It goes on even and didnt streak or have dark or light patches. It also lets the grain colours of the wood show through ( not that poplar has that much colour ) The eyes again are poplar made black with a sharpie For the tails I had a bunch of plant labels made from bamboo so I used a bit from one of those which was still very strong even though it was cut to very slim dimensions The frame is a 2" deep box frame from Aldi's supermarket (on special offer this week for only £2.99 ) The intarsia is backed with 3mm MDF and I put a piece of silver card behind the completed picture I was very pleased how this one came out and it was a nice challenge Anyway , here it is

    A Few New Clocks

Since I found some new clock patterns last week and had a order for a clock I made about 12 clocks this morning. Only photos of the new ones posted though and these aren’t quite finished yet as I don’t have these sanded and mounted to the bases yet. I need to order some inserts as I don’t have any 2” inserts left. So another reason they aren’t finished. Thought I’d show them anyway so I won’t forget to when I get them finished up. Probably finish on them after my afternoon break lol. All cut from 5/8 Cherry.

  6. i was asked if i could build a "basic blanket chest" with the only real requirement being how the top looked. i dont do "basic" very good. all native michigan woods in this- walnut, hickory, and maple for the top. birch for the frame, contre' plaque panels( thats actually french for plywood but plywood isnt elegant enough. and didnt come from michigan but close enough- it was bought in michigan), and cedar lined. along with the letters, i had to use the scrollsaw to do the radius on the bottom of the rails. this has been one of my favorite pieces to build over the years and honored to have been asked to build it.

  8. As you all probably know , I'm pretty new to this scrolling world but already I'm 'flitting' from thing to thing. I've got a Word Art Pattern half done, then I got my new saw and decided to try something 'tiny' ( a small disc with Japanese emblem on it). Today I received my new Intarsia for Beginners book so I'm trying a simple Intarsia pattern. So I now have 3 things 'half' done,,,, now I know I'll finish them all eventually but, does anyone else flit from project to project or do you all totally finish one piece before moving to the next ? Just curious to see if I'm the only one

    Had a try at 3D

Hi , Being new to scroll saw I'm trying the different types of scrolling to see what I like Well I have had me a try at intarsia and I liked that so now I thought I would give a 3D / compound cutting a try . I didnt think it would be very succesfull so only used a bit of 2x2 softwood from the diy shop , Didnt see the point in wasting expensive wood , but I was suprised , it came out not too bad so I will have to have another try using a nice hard wood Don

  11. I started this Sam Custodio pattern last week but we had our younger daughter come for a week long visit and we all went to San Diego where we spent the weekend visiting at the Naval Base and spending time with one of our Grandsons. We took in some other sites and Thursday morning we took our daughter to the airport. That same night we picked up our other daughter and her daughter and they are here from Oregon for 10 days. Yesterday we all went to Tombstone and had a fun time and today the girls went and got a manicure so I was able to get back into my shop and finish cutting this tiger pattern. I still need to finish it and make a frame for it. We are leaving Monday for the Grand Canyon and then to Vegas for a couple of days and then to Lake Havasu and the next day it is a trip back home. After a couple of more days our daughter and granddaughter will be flying back to Portland and so you can see why I have not had much shop time lately. I have been wanting to cut this pattern for some time and I have a few lined up to do when things settle down a little Dick heppnerguy

    Bluetooth earmuffs

G'day all, The Missus bought be a pair of noise cancelling,blue-tooth, fm, mp3 playing earmuffs. for Father's day, {3rd Sept) I never posted previously as I wanted to give them a shot first. You can also answer you phone while wearing them, through the muffs. (I suspect this was the reason she bought them I'm always getting into strife for not answering my phone and my excuse usually is "I must have been down the shed, I was busy etc) They work exceptionally well, cutting the noise as much if not more than my standard earmuffs. Very noticeable when using the thicknesser. I also learnt a few new trick. my Son showed my how to dump my 500 song play list from the computer onto my phone. I can now listen to all my favourites while making as much noise as I like The phone is very clear when answering it vis the earmuffs, You can even have a laugh at the Little Chinese sheila telling you that "the Blue-a-tooth is-a very pale" (I'm also learning chinglish "The blue tooth signal is weak" Below is a link if you are interested in seeing what they look like and just what they do. https://www.bunnings.com.au/tactix-bluetooth-earmuffs_p5810828

  15. Had some pieces of scrap Wenge that was always in my way, so I decided to glue it together with cherry and cut a bowl. It did turn out not too bad, a little bit out of line because after I applied the pressure it moved a little bit well nobody I saw perfect. LOL

    Fretwork Box

Having a lot of fun making boxes lately. The pattern for this one comes from Craftsmanspace The fretwork is plywood, backed with purple card and 3mm MDF. The same card is used to line the box interior. 24 x 21 x 9cm or 10 x 8 x 3.5 inches approx made from an old drawer box. Thanks for looking. Rob

  21. I have a ton of projects started and more in the pipeline. But when getting ready for shows I lay out the work or projects and try to do all the cutting and then do all the sanding and then do all the finishing and then do all the assembling so I like to work in stages. After that it is a crap shoot as to what I work on next. Usually some pen turning and blank making ideas. Try to keep busy. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

  22. YEAH!! I have a lot of PHD's ... ( Projects Half Done ) LOL I have some from like 5 years ago that I started but.. got side tracked with an order or this or that.. before you know it it's been years.. LOL.. While I only have a couple that are quite old.. most I finish within a few weeks.. This happens to me a lot because of my business.. (ie yesterday I made a new Christmas ornament pattern.. and couldn't wait to get started on it.. well wouldn't you know as soon as I started cutting it.. an order came in from my website.. which was a Made To Order item.. soooo... I stopped cutting my new ornament design.. and started making the clock that was ordered.. This morning I have the clock cut out along with about 6-8 other clocks.. I like to make clocks in batches so I'm drilling the recessed holes for the inserts all at the same drill press set-up. after I get done with my lunch break.. I'm going back out to drill those holes and then make up a batch of clock bases and then mount the bases to the clocks and then dip in Danish oil... then I'll get back to my ornament cutting... provided no other orders that needs making comes in, LOL

  23. Really depends on what I am working on. Like Paul, I prefer to say I multitask. they will all get done, it just depends on my mood. Plus, sometimes I just have to “think” about something for a bit before I complete it. Sometimes, I have to think longer then other times.

  24. I usually have several things going. I don't call it "flitting", I just say I like to multi-process.

  25. I usually try to only have one scroll project going at once, but there usually a few other things I'm working on in the shop at the same time. I walk through the door and decide what I feel like messing with that day. That being said, when I do intarsia, I will usually cut a few small fret pieces while I avoid sanding.

  28. Is it possible I'll be lucky? Above photos were from 8:30am, this photo is 4 hours later, water quickly receded... The neighbor that shot the pictures for me peeked in the window and says there was no water in the sunroom which is 6" lower than the main house. Fingers are crossed. Won't be able to get home for a few more days to see for myself.

  29. Just finished up this LED lighted Bears sign, cut the "C" on the scroll saw in 2 parts out of a 1x8....made templates for repeatability....attached together with pockets hole screws/glue......the "C" has 3/4" spacers to give it space between the back & the "C"....Blue LED lights wired to back of "C" reflecting off the white back with blue pin strips.....23" W X 21.5"T......looks great w/o lights, but the blue LED's brings it to life....the blue gets bolder the darker it gets...….runs on 110v....was fun to make.....comments as always....thank you

    Types of Scrolling?

I wasn't aware you could cut metal and other stuff. That opens up my mind to a whole other world now. Thank you for that information. Would you be able to do stainless steel kind of stuff? I guess it's all about finding the right blade

  47. When you say types of scrolling there in my eye is no such thing. There are different projects that can be made and you named one. But basically the scrollsaw can cut wood metal plastics like other tools such as a tablesaw, jigsaw, bandsaw and so forth. What makes a scrollsaw unique is the way it can do these things and the one thing that jumps out above all is the ability to do fret work where you thread a small thin blade in a hole anywhere on a work piece and continue to cut. It cuts the tighest curves ever. So if the project you are working on require these things then a scrollsaw is the tool or a hand fret saw. So to me the question is what type projects can be made using a scrollsaw.
