    Small Boxes

G'day all, Just finished a few small boxes of various designs. They all have the interiors flocked. I used a FDUR #3 for the fret work, band saw and table saw to cut the outside and a Pegas #5 skip to cut the centres out of the oval boxes. The Rose box is made from Oregon, I have a dozen large timbers about 8' x 6" square. 2 have Jarrah bands

    A Few New Clocks

Since I found some new clock patterns last week and had a order for a clock I made about 12 clocks this morning. Only photos of the new ones posted though and these aren’t quite finished yet as I don’t have these sanded and mounted to the bases yet. I need to order some inserts as I don’t have any 2” inserts left. So another reason they aren’t finished. Thought I’d show them anyway so I won’t forget to when I get them finished up. Probably finish on them after my afternoon break lol. All cut from 5/8 Cherry.

  5. My first intarsia was the goldfish from Kathy Wise book and it came out ok but was probably the simplest pattern there is as its all from one piece of wood so it cant really fail to line the cuts up together . It was time to get out of my comfort zone so... My second attempt is Kathy's mice and cheese which was a lot more challenging as its made from more than one variety of wood so it was down to me to make them fit together properly The Mice I made from American Cherry the inside of their ears are made from Poplar ( its a nice wood to work with and the least expensive of the hard woods here in England) The cheese is also poplar and I stained it with a home made dye . I went to the supermarket and got some Turmeric spice and had read that if I mix a little with water it would make a good yellow stain. Instead of water I used Iso Propyl Alcohol ( rubbing alcohol) and the turmeric dissolved in it easily , more important is that unlike water it dries in seconds because the alcohol evaporates so fast. It goes on even and didnt streak or have dark or light patches. It also lets the grain colours of the wood show through ( not that poplar has that much colour ) The eyes again are poplar made black with a sharpie For the tails I had a bunch of plant labels made from bamboo so I used a bit from one of those which was still very strong even though it was cut to very slim dimensions The frame is a 2" deep box frame from Aldi's supermarket (on special offer this week for only £2.99 ) The intarsia is backed with 3mm MDF and I put a piece of silver card behind the completed picture I was very pleased how this one came out and it was a nice challenge Anyway , here it is

  6. i was asked if i could build a "basic blanket chest" with the only real requirement being how the top looked. i dont do "basic" very good. all native michigan woods in this- walnut, hickory, and maple for the top. birch for the frame, contre' plaque panels( thats actually french for plywood but plywood isnt elegant enough. and didnt come from michigan but close enough- it was bought in michigan), and cedar lined. along with the letters, i had to use the scrollsaw to do the radius on the bottom of the rails. this has been one of my favorite pieces to build over the years and honored to have been asked to build it.

  7. Well @Fish, I'm figuring it would be better to say I have mastered my PHD (projects half done) given the number of PHDs many of us probably have.

  8. As I stated in a earlier post, I gave my magnetic top for my Seyco away. I wanted to let you know the reason. I do detailed fret work and because of the detail I like to have as close to zero clearance for my blade as possible. On all my saws I make a top to go over my table top as JimErn does. In that top I drill about a 1 1/2" diameter hole where the blade goes through, and I make inserts that will fit in the hole. The inserts have a small hole for the blade to go through and I can replace the inserts as they wear out.

  11. Hey everybody... My name is Jason I'm from just outside Las Vegas Nevada. I came here because I'm about ready to jump into the world as a Scroller and what better place to come for valuable information than a whole place full of scrollers. I have tons of stuff I want to learn along this journey and I'm interested in meeting people here as well. Thanks for having me guys and I look forward to running into you all. Happy scrolling.

  12. As you all probably know , I'm pretty new to this scrolling world but already I'm 'flitting' from thing to thing. I've got a Word Art Pattern half done, then I got my new saw and decided to try something 'tiny' ( a small disc with Japanese emblem on it). Today I received my new Intarsia for Beginners book so I'm trying a simple Intarsia pattern. So I now have 3 things 'half' done,,,, now I know I'll finish them all eventually but, does anyone else flit from project to project or do you all totally finish one piece before moving to the next ? Just curious to see if I'm the only one

  14. In the past month I have finished 5 projects. 1 was started in 2009, 2 started in 2017 ant the other 2 were started and finished the same week. No idea how many projects were done since 2009 but I do know that I cut over 500 cars for kids in the last 2 years. I "frit" Fredfret

  18. I always seem to have about a half dozen things on the go. I'll start another while waiting for glue to go off, or for the lacquer or flocking to dry. And then thee's the shelf with all the great ideas, that are just waiting for another idea to come along to correct the 1st idea

  19. I do not flit I suffer from ADWW ( Attention Deficit Wood Worker) I kind of will work on one thing lose interest then move to something else etc. Actually can finish three different things on the same day but may have started them all 2 weeks before. What can I say it works for me. Also will work in orders should they come along but then can focus since I will get paid so I can continue my hobby. I have tried many remedies but none seem to work well, chewing on tooth picks helps some.

    Steve Good cut

Needed to get out of the house and away from...family...for a while, so I cut this Steve Good on a bit of scrap I had leftover from another project. It was meant to be....the scrap was about 1/8" larger than the template. I'm going to leave it as it is, unframed, and put some magnets on the back and stick it up on a cabinet over my desk at work. I think it's pretty accurate. LOL

  24. When I started I did the exact same thing - I've only been scrolling less than a year now, but I've learned that having multiple projects are sometimes ok. For example: I may start and cut one of my puzzle projects, but not get to apply the finish for months I've started a few plates with a lot of fretwork, and leave them when I get bored with the holes and small cuts and move on to a silhouette so I have a finished cut piece. I often have 4 or more projects waiting for either a pre-stain/stain, dye or more often than not a frame. I like making my own frames and often I'll line up 4 or more cut projects and leave the cutting until I've made a bunch of frames So basically you're not alone LOL

    Fretwork Box

Having a lot of fun making boxes lately. The pattern for this one comes from Craftsmanspace The fretwork is plywood, backed with purple card and 3mm MDF. The same card is used to line the box interior. 24 x 21 x 9cm or 10 x 8 x 3.5 inches approx made from an old drawer box. Thanks for looking. Rob

    painting

Spray paint for me all the way. Too much frustration otherwise. I would rather spend time taping stuff off than redoing a nice piece like this.

  29. I like to finish them. i can get 3 going at once as I have that many workstations. That of course does not man that I dont lose interest in pieces halfway through. My main problem is I will underestimate the difficulty and number of cuts and they halfway into it and just get sick of it. I will set it aside and start something i can get some quicker satisfaction out of. I will eventually get back to those pieces, just might take some time and of course they are now hogging up valuable bench space so I need to address them.

  30. I normally have multiple projects going on . I'll take a rest from one or get another order for something and that adds to the list.

  31. I don't use muffs at the saw, as I feel I need to listen to music the blade and the wood make. But, I do have a set of headphones designed to take to the race track that I hook to my iPod while mowing. Serves two purposes--cuts the engine noise and gives me some entertainment. My mow job is not as big as Kevin's, but it is more than a few minutes.

    Bluetooth earmuffs

I have had a set of those for a long time... well.. not exactly the "blue tooth" ones.. I had bought a set back about 12 years ago when I started up a lawn care business.. ( one of those things I thought I'd like to do but once I started the business.. I didn't like so much after all )... anyway fast forward.. they stopped working about 2 years ago.. thinking it was because my kids left them outside all winter in the cold shed.. so they got me a new pair that is blue tooth.. while I've never used the blue tooth part of it.. I just listen the the radio.. so i can hear whats happening in the world and my favorite songs play some more favorite that others but ... That all said.. I rarely use them in the shop unless I'm running the loud stuff like my planner etc.. otherwise I just have the radio on in the shop... but anyway... they are awsome to listen to while mowing the grass.. I have a large yard.. so mowing is about a 3 hour job.. music makes it go by much faster, LOL.. Oh in case anyone here in the USA is interested.. my wife bought the at Walmart.. believe they was about $40-50..

Reading your description, I assumed they would be a lot more expensive. I like silence, so all the music stuff is unimportant to me, but I can see where most people would find it very nice. As for the phones, they are the rudest invention ever. They interrupt you know matter what you are doing. I refuse to let that happen. I do not answer the phone unless I am expecting a call I want to get or if it is not inconvenient for me. I hate it when I an talking to someone and they jump to answer the phone right in the middle of our conversation... I've been know to walk off, why not, the phone must be more important to the other person than talking to me. I know I was born in the wrong century! Sorry for the little rant.

  35. Really depends on what I am working on. Like Paul, I prefer to say I multitask. they will all get done, it just depends on my mood. Plus, sometimes I just have to “think” about something for a bit before I complete it. Sometimes, I have to think longer then other times.

  40. Last November I asked for a pattern and got 3 or 4, this one was chosen but then my customer had some family problems and asked me to put off cutting it until she was able to pay for it, well she rang recently and asked for 2 cuttings and gave me more money than I asked for because she said she hated to put me off so long. Well I finally cut it. It was cut from 2.5 mm bamboo and it measures 8.3" x 11.7" (Aust. letter size) The pattern was by @Önder Yılmaz , thank you Brendon, she loved your pattern. By the way I had to cut it twice I broke the first one so had to bin it. Marg
