    My first 'Tiny' piece

Have been trying my new saw out. Only having a PinEnd saw was brilliant to me at least. I was quite happy with it until I joined this forum. Then seeing the kind of beautiful work that you people make, I went and bought myself a 'new to me' saw. Well, never having used one before I jumped in with both feet and did this piece. To give an idea of size I've put my front door key along side it. Now it may not technically be the best piece you've ever seen, but I'm chuffed as mintballs as I've never done anything so tiny in my life. It's a Japanese symbol for Love and I've yet to be brave enough to cut it out from the big piece of wood. It's a piece of oak so hopefully it will last a good while.

  6. Well having been laid up for a while now I am finally able to stand for a bit at the saw and have a few patterns in reserve to keep me occupied Thanks @multitom I managed to get this one done and it was good to get back in the dust even if it was on off and took a while I think it has helped nothing like getting dusty and smelling sawdust to move you along a bit. I now just need to cut a bit of vinyl and I will be back in the flow again Thanks again for the help on the pattern Mahendra portrait patterns as you know are still evading my skill levels at the moment .

    Congrats.

Here is the finished piece. Done for a lady here at work. Bob, thanks for the pattern. She loves it. Done for some of her family getting married soon. 3/4” Oak about 13” long. Three coats of satin poly for the finish. Ellen told me they liked it so much they are going use it in the wedding set up.

    Grumman Mallard

Time to do another Aircraft. I have a love of amphibians and sea planes and thought I'd give a shot at the Grumman G-73 Mallard. They were made from 1946 to 1951 and only 59 were manufactured. Chalk Airlines out of Miami operated several and were featured in the intro to Miami Vice. This plaque is 10" x 17" and is made from 1/8" Baltic Birch with a 1/4" backer.

    Small Boxes

G'day all, Just finished a few small boxes of various designs. They all have the interiors flocked. I used a FDUR #3 for the fret work, band saw and table saw to cut the outside and a Pegas #5 skip to cut the centres out of the oval boxes. The Rose box is made from Oregon, I have a dozen large timbers about 8' x 6" square. 2 have Jarrah bands

  11. i was asked if i could build a "basic blanket chest" with the only real requirement being how the top looked. i dont do "basic" very good. all native michigan woods in this- walnut, hickory, and maple for the top. birch for the frame, contre' plaque panels( thats actually french for plywood but plywood isnt elegant enough. and didnt come from michigan but close enough- it was bought in michigan), and cedar lined. along with the letters, i had to use the scrollsaw to do the radius on the bottom of the rails. this has been one of my favorite pieces to build over the years and honored to have been asked to build it.

The phone is a great tool. But like all tools can be used poorly. It is not the phone that is the problem but the person using it.

Reading your description, I assumed they would be a lot more expensive. I like silence, so all the music stuff is unimportant to me, but I can see where most people would find it very nice. As for the phones, they are the rudest invention ever. They interrupt you know matter what you are doing. I refuse to let that happen. I do not answer the phone unless I am expecting a call I want to get or if it is not inconvenient for me. I hate it when I an talking to someone and they jump to answer the phone right in the middle of our conversation... I've been know to walk off, why not, the phone must be more important to the other person than talking to me. I know I was born in the wrong century! Sorry for the little rant.

    A Few New Clocks

Since I found some new clock patterns last week and had a order for a clock I made about 12 clocks this morning. Only photos of the new ones posted though and these aren’t quite finished yet as I don’t have these sanded and mounted to the bases yet. I need to order some inserts as I don’t have any 2” inserts left. So another reason they aren’t finished. Thought I’d show them anyway so I won’t forget to when I get them finished up. Probably finish on them after my afternoon break lol. All cut from 5/8 Cherry.

    Flags

Tried asking Steve Good this question but he maybe away or just very busy so thought I would throw it out here. I will be doing various military plaques and clocks over time and would like to incorporate the American flag as the backdrop for the backer board. My question I see ones that have a waving flag such as the one in the photo and was wondering if there is anyone who does this and where do you get the photo and how you go about attaching. Are you using a photo from some pinterest site and if so do you have a link?? What type paper are you printing on (photo stock or standard office paper) are you prepping the photo in any way before applying the overlay?? If you have an example would be nice. I am not a painter so painting this is not an option. Thanks in advance.

  26. I started this Sam Custodio pattern last week but we had our younger daughter come for a week long visit and we all went to San Diego where we spent the weekend visiting at the Naval Base and spending time with one of our Grandsons. We took in some other sites and Thursday morning we took our daughter to the airport. That same night we picked up our other daughter and her daughter and they are here from Oregon for 10 days. Yesterday we all went to Tombstone and had a fun time and today the girls went and got a manicure so I was able to get back into my shop and finish cutting this tiger pattern. I still need to finish it and make a frame for it. We are leaving Monday for the Grand Canyon and then to Vegas for a couple of days and then to Lake Havasu and the next day it is a trip back home. After a couple of more days our daughter and granddaughter will be flying back to Portland and so you can see why I have not had much shop time lately. I have been wanting to cut this pattern for some time and I have a few lined up to do when things settle down a little Dick heppnerguy

  28. I don't use muffs at the saw, as I feel I need to listen to music the blade and the wood make. But, I do have a set of headphones designed to take to the race track that I hook to my iPod while mowing. Serves two purposes--cuts the engine noise and gives me some entertainment. My mow job is not as big as Kevin's, but it is more than a few minutes.

I have had a set of those for a long time... well.. not exactly the "blue tooth" ones.. I had bought a set back about 12 years ago when I started up a lawn care business.. ( one of those things I thought I'd like to do but once I started the business.. I didn't like so much after all )... anyway fast forward.. they stopped working about 2 years ago.. thinking it was because my kids left them outside all winter in the cold shed.. so they got me a new pair that is blue tooth.. while I've never used the blue tooth part of it.. I just listen the the radio.. so i can hear whats happening in the world and my favorite songs play some more favorite that others but ... That all said.. I rarely use them in the shop unless I'm running the loud stuff like my planner etc.. otherwise I just have the radio on in the shop... but anyway... they are awsome to listen to while mowing the grass.. I have a large yard.. so mowing is about a 3 hour job.. music makes it go by much faster, LOL.. Oh in case anyone here in the USA is interested.. my wife bought the at Walmart.. believe they was about $40-50..

  31. I usually have several things going. I don't call it "flitting", I just say I like to multi-process.

  32. I usually try to only have one scroll project going at once, but there usually a few other things I'm working on in the shop at the same time. I walk through the door and decide what I feel like messing with that day. That being said, when I do intarsia, I will usually cut a few small fret pieces while I avoid sanding.

  33. Absolutely you can cut plastics such as records as someone mentioned. There are those that do a frost look in plastic with the same patterns. just sand the project with sandpaper. Metals also. Non Ferrous metals to be clear. Not stainless or at least I never tried. Here is a cross I have done and all the brass was cut on the scrollsaw and I used Jewelers blades. I actually cut a quarter in half ( heads one side and tails other ) using my scrollsaw and that material is who knows what along with silver.

    Good luck Iggy

Thanks so much everyone for thinking about me and the family. I had posted a couple of updates in the Coffee House forum, sorry I didn't look here as well. Florence hit 10 miles north of my house, then the eye drifted down directly over my town of Carolina Beach. So far, everything seems to be OK, waiting on word about our house. Less rain than expected and a lot less than other areas in the state. We evacuated to South Carolina and the storm followed us here, but we never lost power and have been sitting around waiting til we can go home, likely Monday or Tuesday. We were very lucky and hoping that continues as we await power to be restored and find everything OK upon our return. Iggy

  35. This was my first ever scroll saw project, but it needs to be explained. I have worked with my hands most of my life. Built 2 motorhomes in my earlier days, as well as various machines and/or improvements. Took a woodworking class at a trade school & built an oak desk. Time & patience mean absolutely nothing to me. The clock was cut with a $69 Performax saw from Menards. Not visible is the pedestal that made the total height about 6 1/2'. It was given as a housewarming gift to our son in Des Moines, Iowa. To you nice people that hesitate to start what looks like a challenging/difficult piece, just remember it is always 1 hole & cut at a time. It doesn't make any difference if it takes 7 months (as this did), or you start 1 or more projects per day. The amount of sawdust is the same either way. jerry

    Good luck Iggy

Unfortunately the luck didn't hold. As I've been tracking the storm, I knew the heaviest rains were still to come and they did overnight last night. I received a text from my neighbor at 4am that his garage had 10 inches of rain in it which meant my garage had the same and very likely could have risen enough to go into our house. No way to know anything yet, it's still raining. We have a friend with a key to our house but she'll have her own issues to contend with and I won't ask her to go by our house until I hear from her first. Maybe I can get the neighbor to look in the window once it's safe for them to venture out. So close... the final day of the slow moving storm... Oh, and due to the additional flooding in the entire area, it could mean a few more days before we can even get back to our town as all roads leading into the Wilmington area were already flooded yesterday.
