Just finished this production run. Not much scroll saw work, just the window openings. I used a band saw for the outside cuts. Wheel well openings cut with forstner bit. I wanted something solid, simple, and safe for toddlers. I make toys primarily for underprivileged kids. Most of these will be donated to an organization called Points North that distributes Christmas gifts to the needy.6 points

Have been trying my new saw out. Only having a PinEnd saw was brilliant to me at least. I was quite happy with it until I joined this forum. Then seeing the kind of beautiful work that you people make, I went and bought myself a 'new to me' saw. Well, never having used one before I jumped in with both feet and did this piece. To give an idea of size I've put my front door key along side it. Now it may not technically be the best piece you've ever seen, but I'm chuffed as mintballs as I've never done anything so tiny in my life. It's a Japanese symbol for Love and I've yet to be brave enough to cut it out from the big piece of wood. It's a piece of oak so hopefully it will last a good while.4 points

Time to do another Aircraft. I have a love of amphibians and sea planes and thought I'd give a shot at the Grumman G-73 Mallard. They were made from 1946 to 1951 and only 59 were manufactured. Chalk Airlines out of Miami operated several and were featured in the intro to Miami Vice. This plaque is 10" x 17" and is made from 1/8" Baltic Birch with a 1/4" backer.4 points

Still stuck in South Carolina as all roads leading to Wilmington have been flooded or destroyed. Started hearing some success stories of folks getting home from the direction we'd be coming from and then today the main highway route opened up, so we're going to pack up and head home tomorrow. Hopefully, if the roads don't re-flood overnight tonight. Amazing the devastation in the area. Our island held up pretty well overall considering the eye came directly over the town shortly after making landfall a few miles to the north. One hotel was destroyed and a coffee shop is pretty much a goner. Plenty of other minor damage, but those 2 seemed to be the worst. Our house and our rental properties all held up, so that's good. Only my garage is the remaining question mark. It took on 6 inches of water, so I have to see what got ruined, if the drywall dried out, etc. I look forward to seeing it for myself tomorrow. Here are a couple of images of our town... and one of our house as the water came just shy of entering...2 points

It could be. I learned about it on a carving forum. Urethane, is that what high density foam is? From the look I was thinking for things like Alex Fox's neat patterns. I did figure that a 12" x 12" piece is a little more than BB. "EZboard is a high-density urethane (HDU) material produced in sheets of varying thickness and densities. There are several manufacturers of HDU. I found out that not all HDU is the same. Some are grittier and more porous than others. I carved on HDU with densities from 10 all the way up to 40. Basswood has a density in the 20-37 lb/cubic foot range. A piece of HDU board has the same density on the front, back, edges and ends! Every part is the same density so the entire piece can be carved! I found 15 lb density to be the overall best for a wide variety of carving."2 points

Russian sites are good to explore and search things, if you can read russian (google translate - crap). I visit alot russian sites. Yes - i can read and write russian. But ... you must have BEST antivirus program. Very easy to pickup trojan or something worse. HTTPS:/ - is not a warranty to a good and safe site. Especially russian sites.2 points -

Look fella. If you are going to post something like this, at least learn Russian and translate it for us. When I click on SSV, I often get a picture of (Asian women looking for a sucker)(Bosnian)(50+ singles in our area) etc, but darn it the ad goes away when I log in. jerry2 points -
Nice work Kevin. I too remember seeing those patterns. I think @Birchbark provided several of them. I know he will be happy to see them being put to use. Thanks for sharing.2 points

I got some patterns a while ago from Bobby ( @scrollriffic ) They are all Australian Rules Football teams and one Melbourne rugby team. Anyway i finished them a while a go and forgot to show one to you. I have sold two of these and now I am about to start the football ones. It's about 20inches long and 5 inches tall, the back is 1/2 inch pine and the Melbourne is 3mm Hoop ply, oh and the white is thick card. Hope you like it. Marg1 point -

Well done. Actually smaller is often quite a bit harder than making it larger. Looking forward to seeing your work as you learn more and more. Thanks for sharing this with us. DW1 point -
apparently there is a show called "scandal" the customer follows. not sure what the show is about, but theres stuff going on around a conference table often. she loves the table and wanted something to look like it. i did some digging and found out the woods used in the table were ebony, butternut, and walnut which would have made a very pricey chest top, let alone for a movie prop. so since the customer is a michigan native i decided to use locally grown woods in this. cut the cost way down,too!1 point

Thank you, Tony, and yes the palms are painted as with the rest of the picture. I just a paper copy of names I did back in 2004 thru2005. I did over 800 of them all different names to make an impression on future handyman customers but it never worked except for one. And she gave me 2 house to do inside out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There's 31 things done to each letter which took 45 minutes per letter.1 point -

Sir prayers will continue for you, your family, and neighbors, We were fortunate in this area but very concerned until it passed. Our Aunts evacuated from Myrtle beach, 5 sisters ages 72 to 93 . They were not going to leave but family talked them into going to kids to in SC. they are all back home and getting settled in again. We have friends with relatives in the Wilmington area and they had a time of it. iggy good to here your update. Hope you get back in soon.1 point -

Grumman Mallard
amazingkevin reacted to munzieb for a topic
Thanks guys. I've been a on few amphibians over they years and that roar of the engines and the shoreline quickly passing by and that slight slapping of the hull and spray on the windows and that slight imperceptional lift when the water breaks from the edge of the hull as it lifts off is just sooo cool. When landing, that slight nose high attitude and it touches down and blows back on the sides and windows and the engines slowly powers down and taxi's in, can't be beat. Sorry, I'm having my Miami Vice moment. Launch is waiting for my limo to pick me up. LOL!!! Ha! DREAMS!1 point -

Beautiful. I am curious, you said how the top looked was dictated and I am just curious as to "why" they wanted the top done like that (if you even know.) It is great and I am sure they are thrilled with the project. Thanks for sharing photos and information on shipping.1 point
