First portrait project and another Alex Fox basket
frankorona and 4 others reacted to Old Joe for a topic
I’d never tried a portrait before. I bought Steve Good’s CD on how to design portraits, but am still wading through it. I decided to try one of his, with a couple of minor changes. I used 1/4” BB mounted on a piece of 3/4” Poplar. Used natural Danish oil on the B.B.and stained the Poplar with Expresso to give it contrast. I also did one more Alex Fox basket. I think I’m done with baskets for a while.5 points -

Have been trying my new saw out. Only having a PinEnd saw was brilliant to me at least. I was quite happy with it until I joined this forum. Then seeing the kind of beautiful work that you people make, I went and bought myself a 'new to me' saw. Well, never having used one before I jumped in with both feet and did this piece. To give an idea of size I've put my front door key along side it. Now it may not technically be the best piece you've ever seen, but I'm chuffed as mintballs as I've never done anything so tiny in my life. It's a Japanese symbol for Love and I've yet to be brave enough to cut it out from the big piece of wood. It's a piece of oak so hopefully it will last a good while.3 points

Patterns from the Ukraine and Siberia
Old Joe and 2 others reacted to David Lehner for a topic
Greetings I strayed from doing a lot of scroll sawing and spent a good amount of time practicing pyrography, (wood Burning). I am back to the scroll saw and now trying to combine both skills.LAtely I have been making bowls/baskets. I am also finding layered patterns intriguing to cut. Alex Fox has a shop on Etsy for selling his patterns. also the Siberian Woodworker has a shop on Etsy for his patterns. I have purchased most of the patterns from each. I will post a few pictures of finished products from Alex Fox patterns. I have bowls cut but ot finished yet from the Siberian Woodworker...also posting bowl with the wood burning3 points -

I have found that other than SSV the other forums really lack any activity. I have tried to use them but when I ask a question, weeks, sometimes months go by without any replies. Here, I ask a question and then just sit back a few minutes and I get feedback. This is by far the best forum I have ever atttended. And I belong to many forums on many subjects. I love this place and I LOVE this group of folks. Thanks Travis. And thanks to all of you for being who you are.3 points -

Recently I posted a Camaro which I cut several weeks ago. Today I posted a photo of the Camaro on Steve Good's web site. I did so because it was Steve's pattern which I cut. Soooo, is this considered illegal cross posting. Hope I'm not up crap creek!2 points -

Hey guys I'm new to the forum. I started scrolling in high school wood shop where I fell in love with it. I always figured they were real expensive and was real busy with all sorts of hobbies so I never bothered looking into them past the shop. Earlier this year I saw a YouTube video on compound cutting and I looked up the cost of a saw. I was surprised see the lower end models were very affordable. Fast forward to earlier this month and my awesome gf bought me a wen 3920. 2 projects in without breaking a blade or turning wood to scrap and I'm quote enjoying myself. Anyways just wanted to say hello. I look forward to posting all sorts of projects2 points -

First scrolling since high school woodshop
John B and one other reacted to HeeresJohnnny for a topic
Hey guys my lady bought me a scroll saw for my birthday so I got straight to work. Haven't cut since high school (15 years ago) and am absolutely loving it. Here are my first 2 projects. Both took about an hour to cut. Key is maple, and rose is African mahogany. Neither has a finish yet (waiting on payday lol). Any suggestions for a good finish technique? I'm a total noob when it comes to finishwork2 points -

For the most part.. I'd consider all images copyright protected unless otherwise stated on the pictures and or.. posted on a royalty free site... so basically yes you'd have legal issues.. not to mention that most likely the puzzles you seen are infringed upon because they are movie / show characters.. especially Disney and professional sports things... are largely illegal.. I'll also say that probably about 90% of anything you see on Pinterest is copyright or trademarked infringed.. Probably nothing wrong with making them for yourself.. just don't try selling them.. and personally I wouldn't post any photos of the pattern or the finished work made from something with copy written images etc..2 points

Cross Posting
NC Scroller and one other reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
I don't think there is any jail time for cross posting so I say go for it.. .. I think Steve is a pretty busy man and put the forum up for others.. Seems like at one time he was going to shut it down but then someone offered to help run it? I rarely go there and actually had forgot about it.. mainly because I kept having trouble logging in back in the day when he had some issues.. and they lasted for a couple months.. use to be quite regular there.. Guess I should hop over there one day and see if I can get back on it.. The cross posting thing I dislike most is on Facebook.. I belong to a lot of the groups... and apparently so does a few others.. and when they post their projects on 3-6 of the different groups.. then my news feed is full of the same posting and I end up having to scroll for 15 minutes of the same postings just to get to something different.. especially if that person post two or three postings on all of those groups.. and then when 3-5 other people also do the same thing... That one just really annoys me.. so I dropped a lot of the Facebook stuff simply for that reason..2 points -

My 2nd Intarsia attempt
cyclistjim reacted to Don Recardo for a topic
My first intarsia was the goldfish from Kathy Wise book and it came out ok but was probably the simplest pattern there is as its all from one piece of wood so it cant really fail to line the cuts up together . It was time to get out of my comfort zone so... My second attempt is Kathy's mice and cheese which was a lot more challenging as its made from more than one variety of wood so it was down to me to make them fit together properly The Mice I made from American Cherry the inside of their ears are made from Poplar ( its a nice wood to work with and the least expensive of the hard woods here in England) The cheese is also poplar and I stained it with a home made dye . I went to the supermarket and got some Turmeric spice and had read that if I mix a little with water it would make a good yellow stain. Instead of water I used Iso Propyl Alcohol ( rubbing alcohol) and the turmeric dissolved in it easily , more important is that unlike water it dries in seconds because the alcohol evaporates so fast. It goes on even and didnt streak or have dark or light patches. It also lets the grain colours of the wood show through ( not that poplar has that much colour ) The eyes again are poplar made black with a sharpie For the tails I had a bunch of plant labels made from bamboo so I used a bit from one of those which was still very strong even though it was cut to very slim dimensions The frame is a 2" deep box frame from Aldi's supermarket (on special offer this week for only £2.99 ) The intarsia is backed with 3mm MDF and I put a piece of silver card behind the completed picture I was very pleased how this one came out and it was a nice challenge Anyway , here it is1 point -
Legal Issues
OCtoolguy reacted to scrollingforsanity for a topic
I recently was looking on Pinterest and saw someone made wood puzzles out of the Looney Toon characters Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny etc. What is your guy's ideas on legality of drawing a picture from those pictures or actually you would pretty much be copying them and making puzzles. I know there is a lot of controversy on using someone else's picture for patterns. I would like your thoughts please. Probably opening a whole can of worms. Thanks for your input grizz1 point -
Well, I check my email until you mentioned it... I had not seen it yet..but would have eventually.. as I am signed up on the email list.. Thanks for the heads up though.. defiantly going to cut that one.. I have another batch of "New" clocks I'm working on so I'll add it to my list.. cut 4 new ones last night..1 point

Legal Issues
meflick reacted to scrollingforsanity for a topic
Thank You guy's for all your input. I will just forget it. I see no way to contact the people who have posted the pattern on Pinterest and get their permission not that I can tell anyway. If they already made the puzzle from the Looney toon drawings its possible that they did it illegal anyway. Thanks again. grizz1 point -
Legal Issues
new2woodwrk reacted to zimmerstutzen for a topic
"Also look at cover bands, they play nothing but other peoples music and get paid for it and dont change the words or anything. They dont get in trouble and are hired by all sorts of businesses." They don't want to get caught. A lot of folks do not realize that ASCAP actually has an army of over a half million disgruntled composers and songwriters etc who will rat everybody out. Also, many bands do make a report similar to the ones by radio stations and legitimate DJ's reporting what songs are played and they do pay a small pittence to ASCAP which in turn distributes royalties.they collect. A local DJ here got nailed. A high school classmate helped write a song that became a national rock and roll song. It rose to about 15 on the charts. . it continues to be played a few thousand times a year on oldies radio and every six months or so he gets a check from ASCAP for a couple hundred dollars. Considering how many ways the royalties have to be split, I am surprised he gets that much. Most companies do not care as long as you are not selling the work. A few, right on their web pages have licensing permission to use their name, image etc for certain purposes. For instance Lions Clubs International has down loadable images of their symbol for t-short companies and hat companies who make apparel for Lions clubs. Free if used to advance the purposes of Lions. Another touchy exemption to copyright law is "fair use". Any use of a symbol or name in a way that makes fun of the company, shows it in a humorous way or even when it is part of another work, sometimes. For instance when a movie company films a scene with dozens of cars traveling a city street, Ford Chevy and Dodge are not going to scream about their logo merely showing up on a car in the movies. .Fair Use is a complicated exception and the more you read about it, the more you will be confused. When I took copyright law many decades ago, the Stieffel lamp company tried to trademark and copyright the designs of their lamps, so no one could copy the designs.. Frankly I do not recall how the case turned out. Which brings me to the third point. Don't be stupid. alter the lines slightly. swing a curve out a millimeter or two, reverse the drawing. do something (where the design is simple) so the piece can't just be held up to the light to show it is all the same. In other cases, how many drawings of rubber ducks are out there? a few hundred thousand maybe. There are probably 600 that are almost the same, except size. If you were to select one, how is any one going to prove that you copied their design as opposed to the other 500.1 point -
Word in Word for Newlyweds
cyclistjim reacted to spirithorse for a topic
Thanks to Don in Brooklin for a wonderful pattern for some newlyweds. About 16" x 6 1/2". 1/4" Baltic Birch stained Golden Oak and glued to a 3/4" pine backer painted black. Sealed with several coats of Polyurethane for weather protection. I'll add two eye screws with a brass colored chain in case they display it out-side and a wooden easel in case they display it in-doors. Comments or helpful criticism welcomed. Thanks again, Don! God Bless! Spirithorse1 point -

The font I used was Script MT Bold. It has the look if not the exact font. Burma Shave signs have a long history and makes for good reading, just Google Burma Shave. I probably know someone from over there but unless they wear a club jacket or similar identifier I may just know them as a fellow hobbyist. I look at them like tattoos. Lots of people have disney and star wars tattoos and no one is coming after them or the artists making then scrape them off or making then stop tattooing them. Also look at cover bands, they play nothing but other peoples music and get paid for it and dont change the words or anything. They dont get in trouble and are hired by all sorts of businesses. Obviously I am not a lawyer but I feel as long as you dont label something as official looney toons or something like that it should not be an issue. Of course you probably are not opening a giant store selling these things either. Look at John Wayne, every scroller in the world makes that one pic and sells it, Is his estate coming after us all? When you think about it, art is all based on someone else's work. Who originally drew the circle or the square? Can we not use those shapes either? Just being devils advocate.1 point

I love the portrait and am considering a portrait project soon. I'm also interested in making some kinda basket. Ah who am I kidding I wanna make every cool thing I see lol. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work. I'm particularly noticing the eyes. Very rarely do fretwork eyes look right to me, but those eyes are wonderful1 point -

WOW that is a delicate basket. Very nice job. And poor old Willie has his unforgiving fans mad at him because he is too old and frail to do a concert. Give him a break. Living the hard life he did abusing his body all those years... it is a wonder he is still alive. I love his music, and I thank him for it. Nice job on the portrait also.1 point

I'll need to keep track of the patterns I use so I can give credit to the people that put in the hard work of design. For these I Google image searched and actually taped a piece of paper to the monitor and traced them out after resizing the image on word pad lol. Weird way of doing it. But it worked like a charm1 point -
Glad you made it home safely Scott and, for the most part, you had little damage to contend with - if you only lost 75 puzzles and one foot pedal an only had 8 1/2 inches of water in the garage and none in the house then I would say you definitely dodged the bullet with the wrath of Florence. Good to hear - make sure you take those losses off on your taxes! Prayers continue for all of our friends and folks who's had to deal with Florence and her aftermath.1 point

Time to do another Aircraft. I have a love of amphibians and sea planes and thought I'd give a shot at the Grumman G-73 Mallard. They were made from 1946 to 1951 and only 59 were manufactured. Chalk Airlines out of Miami operated several and were featured in the intro to Miami Vice. This plaque is 10" x 17" and is made from 1/8" Baltic Birch with a 1/4" backer.1 point
