  3. Been wanting to try my hand at 3D cutting. This being a "bachelor Saturday" while the wife and kiddo are out of town...why not? Power's back on after last night's storms, temps are in the 70's, Mountain Dew is at hand....'tis a good day by any reckoning! Wasn't as difficult to cut as I thought it would be. My fancy drying racks are the little plastic pieces that come on top of a stick of deodorant. I started saving them a while back, and they work well for the purpose.

  7. Well I finally had time to tweak my new Excalibur EX-21.( I work part-time to much for a guy who just retired ). I centered the blades in the the top and bottom holders ( they were way off ), got the arm parallel to the table, centered the blade in the table opening ( was also way off ) and squared up the blade to the table, had to move the motor a bit. I then leveled the stand and took it for a test ride. Tomorrow I need to re-arrange my workshop and find a permanent home for it. It is running very well. I ordered some Flying Dutchman Blades and they came in today so tomorrow I'll give those blades a try. I also ordered a very nice but pricey LED light from Amazon and tat is working very well. Lights up the work piece nicely. I might have to order a couple more of those those lights for my band saw and lathe. Now I need to download some practice templates and get practicing. I admire much of the fine scroll work I see on the pages here. I have a good source for some practice wood since I work PT in a lumber dept at a big box store. Retirement is great. If I was to do it all over again, knowing what I know now...I would order from Seyco. I ordered my saw from HD and the box it came in was pretty beat up. Screws were all over the box ( some were missing ) The saw wasn't bolted to the wood insert inside. The TWO bolts had torn loose. It was only bolted in two places instead of four. I think the price from Seyco is a better deal all around. The table is bigger, it includes a LED light, angle gauge, foot switch and stand. Sounds like a good deal to me. But I have my saw now and its running great so I'm happy. I'll be lurking around. I have much to learn about scrolling. Terry

  8. I've tried to use a Dremel several times but I find it really hard to hold. Although I know it's not big I find I cannot get my fingers around it's chunky shape. My hands hurt after just a few minutes of using it. So I went searching for an alternative and Voila !!! It was advertised for Nail Beauticians but it looked ideal so I bought one. I chose pink much to my hubbys amusement. It holds all the Dremel bits, so I'm really pleased with myself for finding it.

  14. I purchased my first Dremel around 1968 and have had one in the shop ever since. And I agree it's not always easy to hold unless you have large hands. Thanks to members here I have even more uses for it.

    My first 'Tiny' piece

Have been trying my new saw out. Only having a PinEnd saw was brilliant to me at least. I was quite happy with it until I joined this forum. Then seeing the kind of beautiful work that you people make, I went and bought myself a 'new to me' saw. Well, never having used one before I jumped in with both feet and did this piece. To give an idea of size I've put my front door key along side it. Now it may not technically be the best piece you've ever seen, but I'm chuffed as mintballs as I've never done anything so tiny in my life. It's a Japanese symbol for Love and I've yet to be brave enough to cut it out from the big piece of wood. It's a piece of oak so hopefully it will last a good while.

  17. One more setup step to do. Get rid of the guard/hold down. It will only get in the way. Besides, to cut a finger off requires a minimum of two blade changes

  18. Many thanks to all ya'll for your responses. Gayle from Scrollers Cafe sent a link to me and I have the pattern. Here is the link: https://login.filesanywhere.com/fs/v.aspx?v=8c696589585f72a8ada8 Here is my response to Gayle - crossposted on Scrollers Cafe "Thank you!! Thank you very much, Gayle. I have the pattern and hope to start on it soon. So: Who do I owe? How much do I owe? And where do I send the check? I know that I am slow on the response, but I am a full time farmer and only a part time scroller - and I wouldn't have it any other way. My dear sweet wife and I started a U-PICK blackberry farm after we retired about 3 years ago. Now we work twice as hard, twice as long, and love it twice as much. It's called Omi's Blackberry Farm located in central Texas - check us out on facebook and if you are ever in the neighborhood and the gate is open, come on in. We are always looking for a reason to sit and chat. We may not always have berries, but we always have time.

  19. Greetings I strayed from doing a lot of scroll sawing and spent a good amount of time practicing pyrography, (wood Burning). I am back to the scroll saw and now trying to combine both skills.LAtely I have been making bowls/baskets. I am also finding layered patterns intriguing to cut. Alex Fox has a shop on Etsy for selling his patterns. also the Siberian Woodworker has a shop on Etsy for his patterns. I have purchased most of the patterns from each. I will post a few pictures of finished products from Alex Fox patterns. I have bowls cut but ot finished yet from the Siberian Woodworker...also posting bowl with the wood burning

  21. Okay.. so I guess I'm not quite understanding your question.. You don't need to remove any bearings to change the blade chuck.. Now.. you might need to move the bearing sleeves.. Once you remove the nuts on the hex head screws.. and slide out the screws.. you should be able to push the sleeve out if I remember correctly.. I did have one of them on mine that was sort of jammed or stuck but wiggling the clamp around helped as I used a small screw driver to sort of push on the sleeve.. Hope I made some sort of sense LOL

  24. @scrollingforsanity I have this one, only white. Stop by sometime and have a look see if you like it. I really like LED light as opposed to Fluorescent and glass lens as opposed to some kind of plastic. https://www.globalindustrial.com/p/office-school-supply/accessories-furnishings/desk-lamps/5-diopter-led-magnifying-lamp-with-covered-metal-arm-black-277493

    Congrats.

Here is the finished piece. Done for a lady here at work. Bob, thanks for the pattern. She loves it. Done for some of her family getting married soon. 3/4” Oak about 13” long. Three coats of satin poly for the finish. Ellen told me they liked it so much they are going use it in the wedding set up.

    Cross Posting

I see no issue with cross posting as not all our internet family frequent the same sites. However if I see something multiple times I typically only comment once.

It is really fun to discover you and cut different kinds of scroll work. Keep trying more and more things. You are doing really well. Nice job on this one Dick heppnerguy

  36. Welcome to the Village Terry. This is a great place to call home. Congratulations on you new saw. Perhaps getting a saw that sort of came as a kit is a good thing. It gave you an opportunity to really get familiar with your saw. Thanks for joining us.

Glad all is cool. I copy a Steve Good every once in a while. I always send a donation. He is a most gracious individual offering patterns with no obligation. I belong to nearly a half dozen web sites from scroll sawing, pen making to machining and clock sites. The Village is home base for me.

    Legal Issues

I have got to learn the process for picture taking and converting to a design. I saw a scrolled shadow box type thing of a famous church. It was done so when the light behind it was turned on the lines and windows of the church really shined. There is a peculiarly shaped church nearby that is well known for it's "different" architecture I could probably sell a few dozen such illuminated scrolled pictures. Just throwing that idea out there for who ever is interested.

  44. Well having been laid up for a while now I am finally able to stand for a bit at the saw and have a few patterns in reserve to keep me occupied Thanks @multitom I managed to get this one done and it was good to get back in the dust even if it was on off and took a while I think it has helped nothing like getting dusty and smelling sawdust to move you along a bit. I now just need to cut a bit of vinyl and I will be back in the flow again Thanks again for the help on the pattern Mahendra portrait patterns as you know are still evading my skill levels at the moment .

  49. This is the free pattern from Shelia Landy. I will still have to come up with a card idea. This was the one from last year. I gave this to my wife and she had a store bought that said she loved me more than chocolate so it was a real hoot. After 49 years we think a like.
