  8. my Wife had this figured out for me. I love these challenges, even though they are only for fun and no judging is going on. I missed the back to school challenge and I knew I just had to get on the Halloween Challenge. I told me wife that I wanted to try and post the spookiest Halloween Challenge item of all. When I told her about it, she said," if you want to post the spookiest piece, that should be an easy one for you. All you have to do is make a self portrait and cut it." Right away I knew she was correct and so that is just what I did. Hence, here is my entry for the Halloween Challenge. Dick heppnerguy

Got a few more done, the Honey and bee is a pattern by Sam Custodio and I did my own on the wording. The cross with the tree is from the "Foot of the cross Scrollsawart group. The U of K is my own, just took one of their clip art of the logo and added some bridges to it. The year of the dog is from a site with drawings of the different years and animals for each year. New grandson is year of the dog. jim

  12. I bought this two years ago and never even open the box until today when I finally decided it’s time to hang it up. Got a good deal on it but knew I wasn’t ready to put it up, but didn’t realize it’d be two years. Hopefully I hung it in a good spot. I need to adjust it some. Thinking the biggest thing I need is just to hook my dust collection up to all the machines. But anyway this should also help I hope.

  15. No the pressure is up against the roll pin because without that ,that notch does nothing. Tighten or loosen that pin is in play big time. If that pin is rolled with the slit straight up and down that is when it will have a tendency to bend. Look at it closely and you will see what I mean. If you took that pin out there would be no way to tighten the clamp. So the pin is actually the lever That notch has become worn too over the years. Newer ones fit more snug. Probably a combination of the wearing of the notched area puts more pressure on the pin. The arm has no wear on it. They do work in tandem so That definitely is the problem. I may revisit this at a latter time and take some photos. Right now I am pressured to get many projects done in a month and a half.

  17. I sure wished I felt like I had too much room.. LOL.. But.. that said.. I know how you feel because back in 2012 when i put this shop up.. I only had a little 24 x 24 pole barn that I had to share with all the lawn / garden tools / tractors / kids bikes / and all the car repair tools sandblasting equipment etc etc.. Usually had to spend a half day moving stuff out to get a car in if I needed to do car repairs etc.. and at that time.. my woodworking tools consisted of.. a palm sander.. and a cheap table saw that I had for a long time.. my DeWalt 788 was parked in the house.. and I scolled inside... when winter comes around.. sometimes wish it were still in here, .. But the kicker was.. no sawing during TV time.. and.. no sawing when the kids went to bed... while scroll sawing generally isn't noisy.. in a quiet house at night.. well it was frowned upon... Many times I go out and saw at 1-2-3 am ... so I can spend time with the family during the daytime etc.. or play here on the village

  20. Ray, the whole purpose of using any type of tape is to help lubricate the blade to help prevent burning. It could be that the label paper in conjunction with the clear packing tape is to much. I don’t know, I may or may not be right. When you apply the tape, you need to burnish it to the pattern. I use a small block of wood to do that. Take out all the air bubbles between the pattern and tape by rubbing it with the edge of the block.

  21. What about shelf paper?
    1 point
  22. You are getting some "fuzzies" and the edge of the blade hole is catching them. For compound cutting I glue straight to the wood or tape the wood then glue straight to the tape (blue Painters).
    1 point
  23. I’ve never done compound cutting either but my DeWalt would do this sometimes when stack cutting as I use tape to hold the stack of boards together. Not sure why it does it but makes it hard to spin the wood on that sticky table
    1 point
  24. I do not do compound cutting so can not address the tape issue. I would suggest you take some sandpaper and round the edges of the blade hole. The sharp edges maybe catching the tape in cutting into it somewhat. That is about all I got on that one. Good luck.

  25. I too envy your shop size and think your air cleaner will be a great benefit, but you need to get some insulation and some heat in that shop. I would go stir crazy if I couldn't comfortably use my shop all year long. Put a small furnace and some insulation in that shop so you can comfortably use it all year I have a window style heat pump that heats and cools my shop (but I'm in NC), and it doubles as my shop air cleaner. My dust collector is a re-purposed whole house central vacuum unit that I repaired and installed in my shop with a Dust Deputy connected ahead of it to separate out the wood chips and saw dust. It keeps the vacuum's filter from plugging up so well that I never need to clean the vacuum's filter. It works great for collecting the saw dust from the scroll saws, drill presses, sanders, etc. My planer gets used outside with a barrel and fabric cover attachment to collect the chips. My table saw and jointer cabinets collect the saw dust from them and I shovel it out every few months. I also vacuum the shop floor with the unit and have added an extra inlet port out through the shop wall so I can vacuum my cars and trucks with it. This isn't the best arrangement for a shop dust collector, but I don't have the room for a real shop dust collector. The vacuum unit and Dust Deputy had to be located in my shop's attic. Charley

  26. Ray, As promised I found my Delta Q3 manual, but since I'm using a 3 week old computer, I don't have all of the software installed and working to be able to create a pdf file yet, nor am I very good at using Windows 10 yet (I actually hate it). So I've made you a copy of the manual and found the spare HDPE zero clearance insert, so everything is together in an envelope and ready to send. Please PM your mailing address and I'll get it out to you. As for the parts that I would want of your Q3, I'll have to think about that a little, but I would rather see you fix the saw up and use it. Then at least, you could make her something with it to prove that it isn't junk after all. My wife starts in on me when I have something that I haven't used in a while. Then, to her, it needs to go. But I have so many hobbies (toys) that it's difficult for me to keep them all in use all of the time. Each time that I take on a new venture or drag something that doesn't work home I get negative comments for a while too. You can't just bring something home and then let it sit. It has to be top priority to get it usable again, so you can prove to her that it isn't junk after all. We have been married for almost 56 years, so we know each other very well. As long as I can make good use of it she gives up complaining quickly. Some years after we were married, she told one of her friends that one of the reasons why she married me was "because I could fix anything". I overheard this and remind her of it when the need arises. She also grumbles sometimes when I need a new expensive tool, but never stops me from buying it, and I'm careful not to buy anything that financially impacts our family life. I too raised 4 kids, but one is still with us due to being handicapped. I'm always dragging junk home and fixing it. You should have seen the 1987 Cushman Truck when I brought it home 5 years ago. It had been sitting on the edge of a pine forest, untouched for 13 years. It had trees growing up through the pedal holes in the floor board, 4 flat tires, and spider webs in layers from the floor up to the roof inside. Even the door hinges were rusted so bad that it took 1/2 hour and 1/4 can of WD-40 to free them so the doors would open and shut, but I fixed it up and now I maintain my 3+ acres and 1,500' of lake shore with it. With my heart problems and knee replacements, walking any distance on uneven ground is very hard for me. So I use the little truck to move my tools, me, and even small amounts of dirt, fertilizer, seed, etc. to wherever I need to do anything, kind of like some home owners use a wheel barrow. It also takes me to Lowes, Walmart, or to a local burger joint for lunch sometimes, because they are all close and I can reach them on the back roads. I have flashing yellow lights and a tractor slow moving vehicle sign on it, so the police don't bother me. It's considered to be farm machinery or a golf cart and both are allowed on secondary roads here in NC without requiring a license plate. The police have followed me several times, and then passed, giving me a friendly wave as they go by. Charley

Thanks John. Classical, Elegant, together with Simple would be my go-to description of what I try to design. Mostly I just do 'simple'. I will try your top example with the red heart, only difference is I will try a positive design at the top of the plaque as opposed to a negative cutting into the plaque. Bob

  33. Kevin you will absolutely see how much dust it will collect. A dust collector is only good for collecting bigger particles. That will collect those nano particles that will get in your lungs. Have had mine for over 20 years and have changed the main filter twice since I had it I have vaced it out many times but there will come a time you need to change the filter. Not sure what kind of primary filter is on that one but mine is a plastic mesh so I am able to wash. The secondary filter which is the main one is cloth pleated. Some of those the primary filter is a basic air conditioner filter so easily replaced. When I got mine I noticed the air flow was a bit noisy so I lined the inside with some foam to quiet it and worked well. My big thing is I have a low ceiling so I more or less put it over the work table and won't get in the way. But I did put foam padding around the edges just in case. Now they only work well when you turn them on!!!! Mine comes on the minute I turn the light switch on and depending what I do in the shop I will leave running for an extra hour after I leave. As I mentioned in the other thread I am going to put a timer on that thing some day.

  36. Due to the hurricane, today was my first show in a month. This event was actually supposed to be 2 weeks ago but due to downtown Wilmington being hit so hard by Florence it was delayed 2 weeks. This was my first time doing this particular one along with 65 other vendors and things were going well... until a surprise downpour sprung up out of the blue. I didn't even have time to get the walls up on my tent. Really made a mess of things, but after it stopped, folks were right back out and shopping. I had puzzles all over the place because my tablecloths got wet, etc. Anyway, sold 42 puzzles and I even packed up an hour early because more rain was on the way and I didn't want to lose any more puzzles. Next event in 2 weeks. Big show, 2 day event in Topsail Island. I haven't done this one before but have heard great things about it. Iggy

  39. Wow that is alot of wear on a vac if you have on foot switch with saw. I know myself I do a ton of pierce cutting and that thing would be on and off way too much. The Fein vac is very quiet but pricey. I do not use a vac but use a dust mask and have a air cleaner going to suck small particles out of the air. My larger tools I have a dust collector hooked to each tool. I do all my sanding outdoors so that is not a problem but if I have to, I do have a downdraft table I can sand on hooked to dust collector. After each session I shop vac all small pieces and any dust around saw so I am ready for next day. Leave the air cleaner on for about an hour after I am done and shut off later. I have been meaning to put a timer on that thing but like everyone time is not easy to find even when retired. Shop vacs are extremely noisy. Mine the bearing is going on it and it whines even louder. That thing owes me nothing. It is an old Sears model from many years ago. Have the air blower hose blowing dust away from me and any dust that is under saw who cares. I vac that at end of day.

  42. I guess I'm just a cheapskate. I looked at it and thought $50 for that? So, I made my own with some PVC and a few other pieces. My system works great. I'm going to make something similar for my EX. I guess it is just me but I can't spend money on something that I can make myself. That and the fact that now, I'm on a fixed income and have to watch every dollar.

  45. Creepy skull I found on Pinterest, couldn't find any artist reference to give credit to. It is now stained a VERY dark walnut. Also...Halloween tends to have a lot of parties, and scary stuff at the parties, so who better to DJ the party than the Big V himself? Cut this one yesterday, had one tiny bridge break on me (bad cut planning on my part, cut the wrong side leading towards the bridge first, the thicker rim around the right-hand side of his shades). And for the record (har....DJ's...records....okay, I'll keep my day job), I also have a DJ Yoda to go with Darth Vader.

  46. Let me be early on this one, because I was just taking to a guy about it yesterday. I may have showed this here before,,, but can't remember. This a pen I made for a Halloween pen making contest several years ago. I did use a scroll saw to make it. The black is strips of cut PVC Drain, Waste, Vent pipe. I cut and glued three strips together, to make a thicker piece and scrolled the little bats in to the piece. Glued three more pieces and scrolled some more bats. Doing it that way made it so there are bats on both sides of the pen. I filled the bats with epoxy mixed with red paint. When that dried I glued to two halves together to make the pen blank. I then mounted the blank on the lathe and turned the pen. I had no idea how it would turn out, but I think it came out pretty neat. One of the funnest to make pens I did. Oh, and it won the contest. Coarse there were only 6 or 7 entries.
