    Easter Story Cross

Hey everyone, I haven't been around the shop or the village much in a while. I'm sure everyone who doesn't make a living with the saw knows how life can put it on hold. My mom passing, sister's heart surgery, and keeping grandkids to name a few things. Anyway I recently got together with some classmates to plan our 40th reunion and a friend asked me if I could make this. It's a Sue Mey pattern. I downsized it from 18" to 11" tall. Quite a challenge for my skill level and I had to glue in a couple of grapes but it turned out OK I think. It is 1/4" Maple over 1/2" Walnut. Happy October everybody!

  5. Hello and nice to find this forum. I have been trying to get started for about a month now and cannot find the "just right" starter pieces so for now....leaves are my friend. I have no background in this but my dh has made furniture and cabinets for many years. I have a lot of hobbies (too many) and hope to enjoy this one too. I could watch scrollers on Youtube for hours as it looks so relaxing. Picture attached (if it lets me) is perhaps my biggest inspiration at this time. My son took to the saw last year and has made many beautiful things. Mike and I have helped him with some of the finishing work. He is not crazy about that part and we both love finishing Spent a few hours perusing the layout here and can see there are some incredible artisans. I know for sure I will have questions and hope to figure some of it out on my own. Janice

To convert "inches to metric" or "metric to inches", Google (number examples) "convert 400 mm to inches. Same for convert inches to metric. To turn a fraction to into a decimal number, divide the small number by the large number. For example 5/8. Take 5 & divide by 8. Result is .625 jerry

You know that chart is helpful to me as all the printers I've ever owned never say the paper size in inches... it's always these letter/number combos.. and I hate that because I don't never know which is what.. My printer is the big one.. that will do the big sheets.. My kids and wife laugh at me when I brought this new printer home.. I never thought about the physical size of the printer and I have a very small desk... Anyway.. I set the printer up on my desk and it takes up more than half the space.. good thing I have one of those small monitors because this printer has me squeezed into the corner with barely enough room for my monitor.. I don't like the keyboard down on the little tray so it sets up on top of the desk in front of the monitor.. anyway.. very cramped for space.. but at least I can print those large patterns on one sheet of paper... Now that I bought the big printer.. I rarely do portrait type work.. so that make this even more funny cause I really don't need it anymore.. Oh and the mm's is much nicer to work with for me when designing my own patterns.. because I have no idea how to convert 1-7/16 or the other clock sizes into a decimal.. math was never a strong point for me.. good with basic math but doing the fractions and whatnot I struggle with.. somehow the metric system is easier for me in designing patterns.. though I have no idea how they convert to inches etc.. LOL

I had a similar problem with my Delta 40-694. You have to take it apart to get to the bolts in the back. I tightened my motor and have had no problems since. Apparently the guy tightening the bolts got tired and let a few through. Watch Gwinnett woodworks video on the Dewalt repair and your good to go.

  14. +1 on ocooch my friend orders from them a say the Baltic birch is good stuff. I get mine from Johnson's Workbench in Charlotte MI it is an 80 mile drive but worth it. I spend $20 on gas and save $25 dollars on one sheet. I try to buy at least 5 sheets on a trip. The Baltic birch they carry is awesome.

    Air Cleaner

The term "Furnace filter" leaves a lot of room for discussion. As do the terms "1 micron, 5 micron, 10 micron" that we get from the box air filtrator makers. While 1 micron is good enough and 5 micron is definitely not. When I couldn't get outer filters for my Jet AFS-400 (similar to the Wen, Powertec, and Shopfox), I made a frame to fit the outer filter space and went to Lowes and bought 3M Filtrete filters which I cut to fit. See the pic. The reason I got those filters was the research I did about filter capabilities. The 3M filters rated well in the MERV ratings as shown on the chart here - https://www.iallergy.com/pages/compare-3m-filtrete-filters The filters I use are the Micro Allergen Defense (3rd column from the left) with a MERV rating of 11. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises that filters with MERV ratings of 9 to 12 are almost as effective as true high-efficiency particulate absorption, or HEPA, filters when it comes to removing particles from indoor air that are hazardous to your health, which makes them ideal for homes with occupants who have COPD, allergies, asthma and other respiratory conditions. These high-quality filters trap particles as small as one micron, including Legionella and humidifier dust. The same goes for the filter bags on dust collectors. They are usually rated at 10 micron, 5 micron, or 1 micron. My dust collector sits outside, in a shed, so I don't worry to much about it. Although, the bags are rated for 1 micron. But folk who keep the dust collector in the shop should be aware that anything more than 1 micron is dangerous.

    Pegas Scroll Saw

Just got a look at the 21" Pegas scroll saw that is to be available here in the states after the first of the year. Grobet USA had a display at the "Artistry in Wood" show here in Wilmington, Oh.this weekend. I hope that some of you that live fairly close were able to attend, this is a class show with some of the finest woodworking projects you'll ever see!! Back to the saw, the saw was just super quiet, 0 vibration and just a great looking machine. rdv

  18. When your boomerang won't come back it's one thing. But when your DoDo bird won't walk, now that causes me to get real wrankled. Disgusting is what it is! I did eventually get it to walk three steps one time. Mostly the thing just falls over on it's beak. It is cut exactly like the pattern but somehow the geometry is not quite right. I'll try taping weights in various places to see if it makes a difference. If nothing helps I won't paint it. It will go into the circular file. Cheees!

  19. Hey Ray, it is true that most of what is available these days is African Mahogany. I’m not a fan of African Mahogany as it is very grainy, and you never get a good smooth edge like you might with Walnut or Maple. One of my favorite woods to cut to replace Mahogany is Saplee like John mentioned. But you have to pick out your boards as it will vary in color. My advise to you is go over to Woodcraft and find something that appeals to you keeping in mind the the more exotic the wood, the harder the wood will be to cut. i used to get real Mahogany when I was a member of the local woodworking club. We had a member who owns a professional wood shop. Occasionally a truck load of scraps would show up at a meeting and I would pick out the Mahogany. Some of would be red. Those were the days!

  20. HaHa! I would try that but DoDo doesn't like Bud Light.

  22. That wood in that photo looks like redheart. Mahogany is not a true red wood and the best mahogany is unavailable or just too darn expensive to use and that is Honduras Mahogany. I stopped using it many years ago as the price rose. I substitute Sapele for Mahogany now . African Mahogany is the one used alot these days but again has become limited in supply . Those are the ones with some red color to it if that is what you are after. Sapele is harder and denser It is also heavier. But machines well. As with all woods over time they do change colors and some mahogany's will get a muddy red color. Not sure if this is any help.

    A3, A4, etc.

Metrics drive crazy. When I was more actively machining all my machinery was in inches. All my measuring instruments were in inches. Now, however, with digital mikes and calipers they will convert back and forth. I prefer dial indicators over digital. My small mill has three axis DROs so that eliminates the problem of converting.

. Trying to figure out how many balusters and the spacing between them was not an easy task until I found the formula online. I ended up having to make an extra 21 of them to have enough. I spaced them closer together to keep our cats from walking through them. Anyway, thanks John for your chart. I will print it and save it on my wall.

Ray, 8 1/2" = 217mm 11" = 281mm About 1/4" wider and 7/16" shorter than an A4 When we changed to metric I was in the second year of my apprenticeship. It was confusing for awhile, but once I got the than of it it was much easier than the imperial. Mind you I still think in feet and inches and like to have a metric/imperial tape measure handy

    Air Cleaner

Yes exactly.. they saw puts out a lot of fine dust you don't really see floating in the air.. but when it gets captured in that white pleated filter after only a short time of cutting.. you realize just how much dust they really do produce..

  36. Having lots of blades is part of the learning curve.. I have a few stacks of blades that I bought back in 05- 06 when i was first scrolling, that I most likely will never use too.. actually same goes for some pegas blades.. I just ordered a few months ago some spirals.. the sizes on pegas seem like they run smaller than the FD that I normally use in the spirals.. as i ordered same numbers rather than looking at tooth per inch and actual blade dimensions.. So now I have some blades I won't use.. so then I ordered some paying more attention and got the correct sizing.. only to find that i personally don't like their spirals.. also have a few sample packs of most of their other styles and sizes.. I seem to only like the Modified Geometry blades from Pegas.. at least on the Hawk saw.. Just got an idea while replying... maybe I need to try all these blades on the Excalibur.. since they work differently on each saw..

    Air Cleaner

After reading this discussion I went and bought a box fan and a furnace filter and put them together this morning. I just got done cutting a project that took about 2 hours. I set the fan about even with table on the saw and ran it on high. I couldn't believe the amount of sawdust it captured. Usually my glasses are coated with a layer of dust when I'm done but not this time. I didn't think a scrollsaw created that much dust. Boy was I wrong.

    Air Cleaner

Similar to what my findings have been.. and yes I use that same filter on my box fan.. actually probably more efficient than the ceiling mounted unit.. My DC needs a better bag as it is inside the shop.. That said.. I wear my dust mask about any time I'm in the shop.. Again that said.. I see fine dust landing on my tool boxes etc.. so there is dust floating around in the shop.. I clean this dust up a few times a year.. and would like to eliminate more of it.. If it's landing on stuff.. then there is room for improvement.. also if it's landing on stuff.. any time you go into the shop.. and just move.. it'll stir up that dust even though you cannot see it.. doesn't mean it's not getting stirred up. so in reality.. one should have a mask on at all times in the shop even when you're not really " woodworking" ... i work on my cars and things in the shop quite often.. and so I notice this fine dust maybe more than others do that strictly have their shop as a wood shop.. The point I make here is.. this fine dust is what is harmful to you.. and you don't really even have to be woodworking to need the mask.. or need much better filtration... much better filteration is something I'm going to be doing..mainly because I don't want to wear a dust mask to work on my " other projects " ... also be nice to only have to do a deep cleaning only a few times a year rather than every week or so..
