    Another aircraft

It was time to add my favorite aircraft to the collection, the Beech D-17 Staggerwing. As usual, the cleaning up of the design took longer than the actual cutting. More info on link. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beechcraft_Model_17_Staggerwing. Not sure what's next. I've got a beautiful 1/2" by 5.5" x 3' piece of babinga calling. Another box?

    PEGAS Clamps

Well I finally got my new Pegas clamps and installed them on my Ex Cal 21. What a difference. Less noise, vibration and easier blade change. Also perfect tension once you flip the lever over. Hope they last a while.

    Easter Story Cross

Hey everyone, I haven't been around the shop or the village much in a while. I'm sure everyone who doesn't make a living with the saw knows how life can put it on hold. My mom passing, sister's heart surgery, and keeping grandkids to name a few things. Anyway I recently got together with some classmates to plan our 40th reunion and a friend asked me if I could make this. It's a Sue Mey pattern. I downsized it from 18" to 11" tall. Quite a challenge for my skill level and I had to glue in a couple of grapes but it turned out OK I think. It is 1/4" Maple over 1/2" Walnut. Happy October everybody!

  10. When your boomerang won't come back it's one thing. But when your DoDo bird won't walk, now that causes me to get real wrankled. Disgusting is what it is! I did eventually get it to walk three steps one time. Mostly the thing just falls over on it's beak. It is cut exactly like the pattern but somehow the geometry is not quite right. I'll try taping weights in various places to see if it makes a difference. If nothing helps I won't paint it. It will go into the circular file. Cheees!

  18. The truest red wood is bloodwood but the stuff today that they call bloodwood is more brown than red. True bloodwood is deep red and is an exotic oily wood and hard to scroll because it will burn easily. I am lucky because I use to have 2 hardwood dealers within 25 miles of me. One has since shut down but the other still has a great supply that I can look and select through.

  19. Thanks John, I remember that song from when I was a kid. My uncle had that record and I played it over and over. I might not even known what a boomerang was. Just a dumb kid.

  22. my Wife had this figured out for me. I love these challenges, even though they are only for fun and no judging is going on. I missed the back to school challenge and I knew I just had to get on the Halloween Challenge. I told me wife that I wanted to try and post the spookiest Halloween Challenge item of all. When I told her about it, she said," if you want to post the spookiest piece, that should be an easy one for you. All you have to do is make a self portrait and cut it." Right away I knew she was correct and so that is just what I did. Hence, here is my entry for the Halloween Challenge. Dick heppnerguy

  24. Let me be early on this one, because I was just taking to a guy about it yesterday. I may have showed this here before,,, but can't remember. This a pen I made for a Halloween pen making contest several years ago. I did use a scroll saw to make it. The black is strips of cut PVC Drain, Waste, Vent pipe. I cut and glued three strips together, to make a thicker piece and scrolled the little bats in to the piece. Glued three more pieces and scrolled some more bats. Doing it that way made it so there are bats on both sides of the pen. I filled the bats with epoxy mixed with red paint. When that dried I glued to two halves together to make the pen blank. I then mounted the blank on the lathe and turned the pen. I had no idea how it would turn out, but I think it came out pretty neat. One of the funnest to make pens I did. Oh, and it won the contest. Coarse there were only 6 or 7 entries.

  25. I have been working on a project using what I thought was red cedar. It turns out to be NOT red cedar. It has a definite color change between red and white and along that line, it has a tendency to split. So, I'm changing over to mahogany to stay with the red color. But, there are so many different types of mahogany and other woods that proclaim to be mahogany, I am confused as to which one to buy. I just checked at Rockler and they have "mahogany" but don't say what kind or where it comes from. Can any of you smarter folks give me some insight before I go ordering or buying something that is wrong? I am attaching a picture of what I'm trying to make for the wife. The eight side panels are the pieces that will be mahogany. Compound cuts. Thanks for bearing with me. I thought I knew it all but find that I'm wrong. LOL!

  31. May I say thanks to all you guys that have contributed to this thread. I have been following this (lurking) with a great deal of interest as I am in the process of starting a scroll saw group at my local 'Mens Shed' . We don't have a lot of (any ?) money and there are quite a few people interested in joining in. I have always used Olsen but recently have tried Pegas blades because the Olsen blade was in short supply here and I was happy with the Pegas. Now the same problem has arisen and I am trying the Niqua blades. My goto blade is #5 and my first try with the Niqua blade on a piece of 1" thick Ash had a lot of smoke and I was worried about the piece going on fire. It may have been a bad blade so I will try again in the morning. Thanks again for this information it has been a great help (for me). take care Don W PS As I have noted above, I am helping with the scroll saw group at the 'Shed' and am wondering if it would be better (cheaper) buying in bulk and selling on to the membership at cost price ?? I expect there will be a high breakage rate at the beginning and we can ill afford to hand out free blades to our learners.

  35. heres a good sight describing the different mahoganies: https://www.wood-database.com/wood-finder/?fwp_name=M&fwp_paged=2 ya may want to take a look at brazilian cherry. it is quite similar to most of the exotics, though: different trees can produce different color hues.ive had pieces that were a deep dark red and ones that looked like regular old north american cherry. padauk is another one with red hues.however, the red can fade/darken so needs a UV finish on it. that site has a good article on preventing color changes: https://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/preventing-color-changes-in-exotic-woods/ it reads like the red cedar you have may have been cut close to the sapwood. it does splinter/split rather easily, but it does smell good.

  37. There was another one from down under. I can't remember the name but part of it was, "they tanned me hide when I died Clyde and that's it hangin' on the shed". I think it might have been "Tie me kangaroo down".

  39. I used to get it at the Woodcraft store in Ventura. But since they changed ownership, I haven’t been able to find it there. You should be able to find it a lumber shop. Each Woodcraft store will carry all the serfaced 4 sides that the Catalog shows, but they will also carry unsurfaced wood at a much better price. That’s how I buy wood.
