  1. Weather getting pretty cold up here so I made some stuff for the coming season, nice and warm in my basement. Halloween and Xmas decoration from Steve Good, leaves from Sue Mey (compound cut) and of course I had to make some more bird houses to get rid of some scrap wood.

  2. Well it has been a while and still a while to go but I managed to stand sit stand sit and get a couple of ones I have had on my list to do for a while pattern by Gayle from Scrollers cafe. Good to be able to cut something better than any medicine not quite at bragging rights yet but I am getting there slowly slowly .On a plus side I have loads of time to practise pattern making .

  4. I finally completed the bent lid box, in-between other projects. I used pins, glue and clamps to make the lid bend. Since it was only a 7 degree bend it was not too hard. Thanks for all the input that I will reference for other projects.

  8. I always paint the backer first. Then when dry, I use Aleen’s Tacky glue. It’s thick, so a little will go a long way. It dries clear if you have some squeeze out, but I always clean up the squeeze out with a tooth pick. It is very strong and dries fast. I have never had a failure with Aleen’s! you can find it at any craft store like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.

  9. Dale that sounds like the first saw I had, Dremel 2 speed slow and fast, pin end. Back then 20 years ago was a rough time for me. The scrolling helped me through that. I found all the things you mentioned were an issue but kept me going during the depressive time. Now with a Dewalt and Ex 21, bandsaw. table saw Lathe and router table with routers no looking back. Was the best investment I made and was better than any therapy or medication I could take. Even just cutting outside shapes etc. there is something about being alone with the saw and the wood and creating something you can sand paint and say I did that. I past it on to my son in law and he has been bitten by the wood bug. He is not a scroller but has made home improvements with beds, dressers and night stands.

Hearing or lungs I will take lungs since my hearing is greatly reduced. I do wear hearing protection to keep what is left.

I made this plaque for my Dad, an Air Force Veteran of 30 years. I'm glad I did as he passed away a month ago at the age of 88. He was able to enjoy it for about 3 years. It was challenging for me because it was one of my early scrollsawing cuts not to mention my first attempt at making frames. The Air Force plaque was one of Steeve Good's designs.

  14. Here you go. The spiritual store lady requested a modified coexist with more symbols and changed around. It was fun doing it the hard way with paper, scissors and tape, But that's how I've been doing it since 2004. And then a dad project for the girl at the store.

Nicely done. That took some patience and time to cut. Are you going to keep it that light or are you thinking of staining it darker? Thanks for sharing this with us. DW

Nice scroll work Jackie. Try intarsia I’m going to and I don’t even like cutting with a straight blade. Condolences to you and your family on your dads passing.

  23. I have an unheated finishing shed that I try to heat with a small electric heater. After spraying a light coat I would allow to dry four hours or overnight. I recently purchased a used heat lamp, that was used for automotive painting, and have reduced my curing time to fifteen minutes per coat. I am using a rattle can of finish. I applied five coats on four items today before lunch.

  26. I couldn't fathom out why my scrolling was not going to plan today. I'm new to this scrolling stuff so it was very strange. The wood kept jumping, the blade wouldn't do a curve, my pattern was lifting at the edges. I checked my tension, that was ok. I checked the blade was aligned, it was.. I spoke nicely to the machine, that didn't work. I patted it on it's arm. I promised to give it a good clean later, it didn't care one jot. I cursed the piece of wood I was working with, thinking I'd picked a 'bad un'' off the shelf. Finally I came to the conclusion that the blade must be dull, although I'd not used it much, so I went to change it... and lo and behold.... I'd put it in UPSIDE DOWN !!! A while back I broke my first blade and today I did this, so as I say ''there's a 1st time for everything''. Now having a coffee !!!!!

  27. Hi my name is Irene. I bought a scroll saw last November, now I’m hooked. So many things I want to scroll, so many techniques I want to try. My mind is racing with ideas. I use spiral blades and have made many projects, now I need to figure out the straight blade, I find it challenging. I’m glad to be on this forum and I will be absorbing all your years of expertise.

  35. I always paint first. Then add the varnish. Cover the spots that will be glued with tape. Then when you are ready to glue it will work.

  36. Don't get me wrong, I love scrolling and I think I am pretty good at the fret work stuff, but the painters and carvers, in my opinion have more talent in their little fingers than I have in my whole body. I can maneuver a piece of wood to cut out the black, but that is mechanical compared to carving a piece of wood into a neat form or painting a picture,,,,, well I use to do paint by numbers pretty well... But you know, I am old enough now that I don't need approval, so I am going to try carving and only I need to approve of what I produce... No one else has to even see it. By the way, I recently purchased a couple detail knife blades and made handles for them. I already cut myself just wrapping them up to put them away. I think my username may go from Scrappile to 3fingers......

  37. I had a little time this afternoon so I played with it. It doesn't vibrate as bad as I thought it would and it will probably be better when I mount it solid. Pin end blades are easy to change but you can't cut any small fret work with them. I tried the adaptor for pin less blades it worked okay but you can't do it very fast. To set the blade tension worked okay but again not very fast. My opinion is if you were not in a hurry and just going to cut outside shapes and no small fret work it would be a decent saw.

I was just looking at what's available from the LocLine website and I see that they jump from 3/4" up to 2 1/2". I'm wondering how much suction would be lost if I was to run my Fein hose into 1 1/4" pvc and then up to 2 1/2" and then neck it down on the ends to something smaller. I hate to spend money on the LocLine just to find out that it doesn't "suck".

    Dust Collection

On my saws it is just the opposite. Most the dust is collected above the table because I use zero clearance inserts. Very little dust actually comes out the bottom. I have thought of eliminating the bottom collection although I have it in place and really see no advantage in eliminating it. I use to use a box fan setup, but felt that although it caught a large percent of the dust, what it didn't catch was being blown into air to settle all over and for me to breath. I guess there is no perfect setup, but I do know I like to collect all I can and wish I had taken the time to develop dust collection when I was much younger...

I always paint my stuff and then glue together with Weldbond glue. I have tried them all and this holds the best for me. After it is glued I spray the whole thing with clear lacquer.

Thanks all, I'll try again. I don't just do scrollwork and jewelry. If the grandkids ask for something I get busy and make it for them. My youngest granddaughter is a dancer and gymnast. She wanted a balance beam so of course Gramma had to fulfill her wishes. I found info on Pinterest as to specs and what have you. Here is the result. I have to brag too on her form.
