    Old friends

Just made this for an old friend. She saw something similar I had made and asked if I could make her one with birds representing her, her four daughters and their children. I found some clip art birds I liked and my talented 15 year old daughter drew the tree and grouped them by families.

  3. Santa came today. I got my draftsman stool today. Holy smokes, the seat is a whopping 16" diameter. I'm not a skinny fella but that seat supports about an ax handle and a half. It sure does roll around nice. My saw on wheels does not roll away from me but now the stool does. I now do have to anchor the chair to the saw with my leg but oh how comfortable. Hope I don't fall asleep at the saw.

    bobscroll

The talented bobscroll was kind enough to put the text/rose pattern in the Library. I designed the frame. Stack cut 2. Text is 1/8". Frame sides 1/4". Square corners are 3/8". All BB. 40.9 saw hours, but that is slightly misleading. Corners & backers were not stacked. Our Church has an outstanding office manager/receptionist. She told us a couple of years ago that the Psalm John 3:16 is carved on the back of her deceased brother's tombstone. One will be given to her & the other will hang in our home. jerry

    3D cut

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand finished. Wood was a 2x2 from Lowes, probably pine or something else cheap, since blade-exit didn't leave feathers so much as it took chunks with it. Next time, a 2x4 of harder wood, ripped down the center, will be my wood of choice. Lots of holes, lots of blade moves, lots of fighting with scrap chunks that got caught in side cross-channels (cross-hatching the scrap wood as I cut it, instead of trying for a solid piece, helped immensely). This was a fun cut to do, and I look forward to doing more like it! Sanded with a cheap nail file cut in half lengthwise...multiple interior layers as channels cross themselves means multiple "exit feathers" to take off. Finished with BLO, currently on stands, drying.

    Border Collie

MY granddaughter has a border collie that looks just like this one. I had to cut it for her and we are going to give it to her as a gift at her wedding shower. She is so in love with her dogs and takes them with her often. They ride on the back of her flat bed pickup truck. They are working cow dogs and also extremely well trained. I loved cutting this one for her. I know she will like it a lot. This is a pattern made be Gayle and posted in The Scroller Café. Dick heppnerguy

  7. Paul (Grampa) did this pattern for me today and I just finished cutting it out. I just have to put it in a frame. It's a 5 x 7. I think she will like it. I want to give a big thanks to Paul for doing this so quick.

  8. Took this one out of my standard frame and made a "Colonial" frame for it as per customers wishes. I can't remember who made the pattern.

    A Milestone

I think I hit a milestone last weekend. I finished off my first can of spray adhesive. While I know some of you guys run through a can a week, I've had this one more than a year!

  10. My stool rolls, so I put a piece of carpet under it. Now it roll but only when I want it to... Not sure what to say about @grampa's stool, except I think he is bragging or dreaming,,,and he might want a little padding on it....

    Juxtaposition

I'm not trying to brag, but there is a story to this latest project of mine that I wanted to share. Looking at the project you may recognize that the top half is a beautiful pattern done by one of our colleagues - Dan (nickname Fish) - done in 2006. I saved it and always wanted to scroll it. Then somewhere along the line I found a picture (see second picture - I'm 99% sure it's in the public domain) that made me remember the effort by Dan. When I saw the second picture my mind raced on - I just see so much symbolism in both, on many levels, and the thought of the two together was the inspiration I needed. Since I don't have the skills to make a pattern I asked Dan if would. Indeed he did, and what you see is the result. To me this is very eye-catching because of the multiple topics of symbolism expressed. So kudos to Dan for creating the patterns, and I got a real kick out of doing this project. Welcome your constructive comments.... Vin p.s. -- It is done on 1/4" Ash; I used Teak Oil to enhance the color and the grain, and finished it with a beeswax / polish combination.

    Hello from S.E. Pa

Hello Everyone. Love reading about and seeing the incredible pieces on these boards, hoping to get to that level someday. I've been a casual scroller for about 5 years. Bought an inexpensive Craftsman about 10 years ago but never really got started until my son needed a paddle to decorate for the fraternity he was joining. We couldn't find what he needed anywhere except for one that was a keychain. I was able to make a copy of it, blow it up to make a pattern and it turned out to be exactly what he needed. I was hooked. Found some Beginner books and simple patterns and cut away. I've tried some fretwork but don't seem to have the patience and steady enough hand for the intricate work (maybe I can blame the saw) but I liked segmentation and am in the midst of finishing up my first intarsia piece, the flying eagle from Scroller magazine. When I say casual I mean I started that eagle in April of 2015 but am finally at the stage of putting it together and will post it when it's finished. It is far from perfect but has been enjoyable. Well that's my long-winded introduction but as the winter sets in I hope to become very involved in this forum and pick all your brains in hopes of becoming more confident to try different patterns. Thank you for listening (reading) Fran

    Playing Card Box

I got the idea from Steve Good's site. I changed it up to suit me. The cards a a bit smaller than normal.....bought them at the dollar store. Standard ones fit well.

  15. 1: I can turn a tight corner 2: Spiral blades are not so bad 3: Thin ply is much more difficult to cut accurately. 4: Check a pattern before cutting. 5: A blade snapping is scary 6: mdf cuts well but the dust is awful 7: A smaller piece of wood is easier to cut with. 8: Hegner blade clamps are brilliant. Had a wee play this afternoon with a couple of Halloween patterns. Mainly for the curves and points. Used a spiral which snapped half way around. My first snapped blade and the noise made me jump. Fitted a flat and continued on with the witch. I used a thin bit of ply and it was difficult to hold back the blade All in all a good day.

  17. I cut 2.5mm bamboo ply with a 2/0 reverse tooth blade lots of times, never had a problem. Just takes practice, and more practice. Marg

  18. I was cutting several things last night but couldn't settle to do just one, so I picked up a new pattern that I'd printed out. Now this pattern was printed onto yellow paper as this was what I had to hand, but the pattern its self was done in red ink. Wow, what a difference the red ink made. I could see the teeny tiny blade in my new saw really well and it made cutting a pleasure. I had begun to go cross eyed with my patterns that had black lines as I found it hard to distinguish the blade from the ink and made it a very tiring time for my old brain. Now to fathom out how to get the patterns I have in my box changed to red ink. !!!!

    Craft Show Display

That's a cool little display.. I display my ornaments in clear top gift boxes.. but I rarely do shows.. every now and then I do a church craft show because I somehow let the organizers talk me into it.. LOL... Thing is.. I need craft shows to be in the off season.. not when I'm busy selling online... I've had a few instances where I sold items online that also sold in person at the show.. so I just keep plucking away with the online... then I don't have to fool with set up take down etc... I sell most of my ornaments at $14 - 20 range.. but to make it simple for cash and not having to deal with a lot of change.. I sold them at the shows for $10.. and did really well.. I see a lot of sellers online selling them anywhere from $5 - 10 - 12 etc.. some are starting to get up to my rice range and some sell for a little more than I do now days.. If I was selling at crafts shows I might do 10 each or two for 15.. or something similar to that.. doing those kinds of things helps sell more.. because.. well they see one they like and they always want a bargain.. the second one is half price so they're going to look at all you have.. LOL or you could do 10 each or 17 for two.. whatever works for you.. just making a second one deal sort of makes the customer look through them all a little better.. Good luck with the show.. hoping you sell out LOL

  26. Use a rolling chair and they're great for those subtle little moves when you want to get a slightly different perspective of the situation. But at times, you find that you've moved and you've corkscrewed yourself into a position that you had no intention of being at. Also moving your sitting position just slightly and wiggling your back at the same time seems to relieve that back muscle stress. Rubber mat is a good idea or just a scrap piece of carpet might be the answer which I do have in the computer room.

    Red Ink from now on.

I almost always convert patterns to "Red Line" with light grey infill.. I use Paintshop pro, which I have done for years. Text I design in MS Publisher and make it Red line. When I did my 1st pattern many years ago, the ease it made in cutting was remarkable.

  47. so that it is totally adjustable to my comfort. That way, when I find the right tilt, I just mark where that board is. At some point in the future, I may permanently attach it so that it stays there. So far, I'm not sure where I want it.

  48. My DeWalt stand is adjustable.. I do not know what each of the slots are in height.. I have mine on the highest level though.. I tried to raise my other saws but found they pick up more vibration being tilted.. I'm sure if I really looked into it I could get them smoothed out with some tweaking.. Guess it just was never that important to me... Do like them tilted though.. My DeWalt is the most comfortable saw to sit at if I am running it for a long period of time..

  49. I just take my patterns to an office supply store like Office Depot or Staples and have the patterns copied in red. Most of the time I have the patterns either enlarged or reduced to fit the material I have on hand. It's cheap or at least not very expensive. Red makes life so much easier for me.
