  2. Our new friends here in Arizona are from the Seattle area and only returned here about a month ago. They are getting up their in age and have been doing the snowbird thing for about 17 years of so. Because their health is failing and traveling becomes too much, as is their second house to take care of, they sold their house last week and will be going back to Seattle in December. I decided this nice pattern of Sam Custodio's would make a perfect going away gift and something they can enjoy back in Washington State, so I cut it for them and gave it to them last night. My hope is.... when they look at it, they will think of Sharon and I and perhaps make one more trip to Arizona and stay with us for a couple of winter weeks, sometime. Dick heppnerguy

  3. My friend is getting married on Halloween and wanted a Nightmare Before Christmas themed piece. Cut from 1/4" walnut, backed and framed in pine.

  4. Well hopefully what I got accomplished today will help clear up the air in the garage. Made up two dust collectors, one for each of the scroll saws and hung a air filtration system. Hopefully these will help reduce some of the saw dust in there. Oh yeah, I also went and bought a larger shop vac. This one has 170's cfm's compared to the one before that only had 60 cfm's.

    My Trunk or Treat

I got asked at the last minute this morning if I would do a trunk or treat with them later this afternoon......so I put my thinking cap on......I made Charley Brown & Snoopy...1/4" ply....18" tall.....used spray paint and black marker...will be working out of my truck with topper.....not bad for last minute...plan on re-using next year possibly.....the only thing missing is the candy...comments are always appreciated....ty

  6. Slept a bit this morning, got up and did a quick workout with my wife (still old, still fat, still out of shape, knees and core still questioning my sanity in doing this.....but....call me crazy, but I like to see my shoes when I put them on!), then spent some time with my 9-year-old daughter while the wife was at a healthy-oil shindig. Watched a movie this afternoon with the family (all of them...two legged and four), then worked on my work Halloween costume (I'm either gonna be the toast of the party, or sitting in HR being told in no uncertain terms that I'm the reason nobody in the entire company will ever be allowed to dress up again). After dinner....I needed sawdust. So it became a Steve Good kind of evening while the wife and kiddo sat around watching Christmas sap movies on the Halmark Channel. I know family time is important...but....I just can't. If you've ever seen one of those movies, you'll understand. I modded the base a bit. The pattern called for 1/4" BB with an oval base of 3/4", but I cut my pattern out of a nice piece of 1x12, so its thick enough to stand up on its own. So I extended the base a bit and rounded it off, and it stands up quite well. My wife was happy. Which, I guess, is the point. See? After 15 years, I'm startin' to get the hang of this marriage thing. Did some quick sanding to get most of the feathers off, I'll give it a more thorough sand tomorrow. Not sure if I'll go BLO for a finish or a dark stain. I'll have to ask where she plans on putting it, and stain opposite of whatever the background is (dark vs. light).

  9. I have a cheap one that doesn't have any kind of temp change dial and am able to use it with Okay results... now... I also just recently bought at a estate sale a very nice Detail Master with a few pens.. actually a lot of pens.. but that said.. if you watch some videos and do some reading.. you'll find that there really is only a couple different pens that is really even needed.. If you buy a new unit.. most come with a choice of a couple different pens... Many used ones with several pens available on eBay.. Unfortunately.. I haven't found anywhere to buy the talent though so I suppose you need to make your own..

  10. I just wanted to add, I purchased their pliers for that the size of line I purchased... To me the pliers are way over priced, but I knew I was going to do quite a bit of assembling and experimenting when I put mine together and I thought it would make it easier. It did, and I am not sorry I purchased them. They are pretty flimsy, and again, to me, over priced,, but they work and do make things somewhat easier...

  11. @kmmcrafts I purchased my Loc-Line directly from Loc-line: http://www.loc-line.com/products/34-loc-line-system/ at the time I was able to get the cheapest that way, but you can get it through Amazon and other places... Nice set up Jim. I think you will be very happy with it.

    Help Please

This is just to say thanks for your help. My husband is getting a new scroll saw for me. I will then use what you told me on that one. This one has got me into the hobby that I have come to love. We have a scroll saw which hubby has had to fix or change it to do the hobby and with the results is the blade can't be made strait. I won't complain as I have found a lovely pass time made friend's I might not meet and have learnt so much from. What could be bad about that. In time I will try to sell them to see how people see my work or keep it to show off the friends I have and what the have helped me to learn about a healthy craft. Thank you Brad

  14. Brad, Sorry to hear you haven't been feeling all that great.. I sure hope you can get to feeling better and be able to get out in the shop to make some sawdust... I've been wondering the last few weeks where you been and how you been doing.. Reading through the post here.. and Ray mentioned about wood carving.. I've never tried that but I also just wanted to say that one can do wonderful woodwork with just a cheap ol wood burning kit too... which is something you can probably do right in the house without making a big sawdust mess.. though they might smell up the house like a campfire you may want to put a fan in the window and suck the smoke out.. anyway.. just a thought.. Praying for you to get to feeling better

  15. Howdy Mr. Ray. You are exactly right, my friend! Exactly what you described is what I am wantin' to create. Tomorrow I will see if I can come with a sketch and then see if I can figure out how to get on here so you folks can see what a country boys' art work looks like.;) My bride gives me fits on a regular basis on account of I don't draw out a sketch of my projects and measurements. She says to me "just how do you remember all those measurements, angles, and things, and you can't even remember my grocery list!" Sometimes I have to get creative when I answer her, Mr. Ray, trust me. I have a dream catcher in the makin's at the moment. A School Mate of mine recently lost her Ma, and asked me to make a dream catcher in memory of her Ma. I have all the feathers cut, and one walnut feather and beaded thong hangin' on it now. I still have to bead the other 4 or 5 thongs for the feathers and attach the feathers to them, hang them on the catcher, then wrap the complete outside with a 1/4" black leather strip. The catcher is cut from maple, and feathers are 3/32'' thick, cut from beetle kill pine, cedar, walnut, oak, and cherry. The other project in the works is for a ranch here for their 100th anniversary. I am cutting a Hereford bullhead in white oak, along with their brand in white oak, and then those will be inlaid in walnut and shot with my air sprayer with two coats of clear lacquer, and two coats of clear coat to seal the wood. But I am under heavy limitations at the moment, so I have to do what I can at one time, and leave the rest till the next round. I appreciate your reply, Mr. Ray. Brad.

  16. Once I get all my equipment into the places that they will remain, I will get serious about where to put the air filter. I figure that even up there in the corner it's still going to be a lot better than not at all. I can already tell the difference. That little drill press is a Delta 8" that I bought in like new condition on Ebay for $45. It's got it's "shortcomings" but it will have to do until something better comes along. I don't want to give up any more space than what it takes up now.

    Hello from NWO

Hi everyone, my name is John and I live in a small town just west of Toledo, Ohio. I've been a woodworker for ages, but have just gotten interested in scrolling in the last month or so. We've actually had a Dewalt saw for 5 or 6 years, purchased it for my wife. She took a class at the local Woodcraft, but really hasn't taken much time to practice. I've used it a few times, just to make cuts that seemed easier on it. Then over the last month or so I was finishing some stuff up for our first craft show and started using it more and really enjoying it. I've cut 10 to 15 simple projects so far and feel like I might be hooked! Looking forward to learning from all you fine folks and contributing when I can.

  25. Where are you guys buying the large blue flex hose stuff from? I am planing to buy a higher end vacuum around the holidays and really wanting to set up this type of dust collection on all my saws.. so I can just move the hose from one saw to the next.. though now days I'm pretty much only using the Hawks and Excalibur.. and liking the Excalibur more and more now that I put those Pegas chucks on it..

I cut Steve Good's recipe box pattern came out great, I cut each pin slightly proud and sanded down to size. after assembly the lid and box did not match perfectly, a little sanding on my belt sander cured that problem. before cutting I checked the blade square to the table.

Judging by the imprint on that stool, I would guess that he does Is scrolling in the nude even allowed??? I know there's a saying "To Each his Own" but I think that would be taking it to a whole new level

  30. Paul (Grampa) did this pattern for me today and I just finished cutting it out. I just have to put it in a frame. It's a 5 x 7. I think she will like it. I want to give a big thanks to Paul for doing this so quick.

  34. Be sure and show us the finished project. So curious about how it will look in it's finality. It is really important to do things for and with the family even when it is not something you want to do. I agree with the television thing. My wife loves to watch tv and that drives me into my shop. 38. Brenda, have a shot at fixing it, you have nothing to lose. The way I would go about it would be to split the face veneer of a piece of scrap ply. Then take my time, cutting and shaping until it fitted in the damaged space. If you are going to polish it with clear, no amount of putty, filler etc will hide that. Good luck

Not a bad hour and a half

A nice cutting. I have just got to agree with you about those Xmas movies, I always find something more exciting to do, even if it's just cutting my toe nails.

  40. Oh, and my last Olsen blade snapped shortly after starting, at the 90* angle of the "L". Which, darn it, forced me to try the new Pegas skip-tooth 3" pin-ended blades I'd ordered. I'll be danged....its like physics reversed itself and all of the dust started shooting out the bottom of the project and not congregating on the top, covering the pattern! I love these blades!!

  43. Yeah, I see your problem.. I was going to say.. mine has feet on it... and can set on a bench or floor.. not quite sure how well one would work down low.. but in looking at your work area... doesn't appear to be much floor space either.. BTW, I have the same drill press I think.. sure looks like mine anyway.. I think it's a 8 or 10" Delta? Gave $2 for mine at a old tractor swap meet about 10 years ago.. I didn't get a chuck with it but my friend had one he gave me.. Mines pretty well worn and has plenty of run out.. but does what I need for the most part..

  44. Thanks Les and Ray, I'm hoping it will be better in the shop in the near future. I had went all summer with no shop vac and didn't realize how bad it was in there till I had replaced the filter on my respirator one afternoon and worked in the shop for about 4-5 hours and when I took off the respirator there was brown dust caked on the inside. That was the time I decided I had to do something while I was still able to. I will let everyone know how it works. I will be going into the shop pretty soon and work some. Thanks Jim

  46. sorry i should have signed "- chris" i have found SSV to be as you described. i have also been to sites that seem to have "cliques" . i would post or ask questions and not only get no haswers but most of the time no views even though the board is active. i feel excepted here. even though i do a lot of "non-traditional " scrolling. i am thankful for all here as well.

  47. Stoney, I agree with what you say but the problem I have is the ceiling of my shop is actually a part of the awning system on my mobile home. I have added shelves so that my wife can store her seasonal stuff. The shelves are high enough to do that but they are also low enough that they have become a hindrance. I may figure out another way in the future but for now, this will have to suffice. I probably will bring it closer to my main saw and if I decided to sell the Dewalt, I'll relocate the EX and then hang the air filter in a different place. Thanks for your input.

  48. I never did have a problem cutting straight lines or circles. The eyes are starting to fail so have to concentrate more. That is why I like my RBI saw. It does not cut aggressively and will cut true. It is a matter of practice and remember the key rules, let the saw do the cutting. All you are doing is steering. Try to look a little bit ahead so that tells the brain what you will be doing. I am working on a few patterns now that have complete circles and they came out quite well. I would say another 3 weeks and I will have everything done and will post photos before my shows. Made some cool stuff and hopefully will sell. I do not believe a circle cutting jig would ever work on a scrollsaw.
