VW VAN CUT FOR A FRIENDS BIRTHDAY
Tbow388 and 7 others reacted to britetomro for a topic
I would like to extend my thanks to Lawson 56, Grampa and TD Painter for creating great patterns for of the VW van from the attached photo. Of the 3 pattern creators, I chose TD Painter, he had the detail I was looking for on this project. I still hold down a full time job so with work, this project took my a week to complete with doing a little at nights. I already had the frame made from my last setup on making a number of frames for future projects, just had to apply the finish. There were approximately 90 cuts overall and the pattern was enlarged slightly to approx 10" high by 14" long. I used baltic birch ply at 1/8" thick and stack cut 4 pieces. I also cut the 2 mats for this project and even included a dust cover on the back of the frame along with appropriate hanging hardware. The frame is made with Philippine Mahogany with an inlay if Purple Heart. The interior dimensions of the frame is approx. 16" high by 20" long. Thanks for looking and I look forward to any comments.8 points -

One for our snow bird neighbors
frankorona and 5 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Our new friends here in Arizona are from the Seattle area and only returned here about a month ago. They are getting up their in age and have been doing the snowbird thing for about 17 years of so. Because their health is failing and traveling becomes too much, as is their second house to take care of, they sold their house last week and will be going back to Seattle in December. I decided this nice pattern of Sam Custodio's would make a perfect going away gift and something they can enjoy back in Washington State, so I cut it for them and gave it to them last night. My hope is.... when they look at it, they will think of Sharon and I and perhaps make one more trip to Arizona and stay with us for a couple of winter weeks, sometime. Dick heppnerguy6 points -

Slept a bit this morning, got up and did a quick workout with my wife (still old, still fat, still out of shape, knees and core still questioning my sanity in doing this.....but....call me crazy, but I like to see my shoes when I put them on!), then spent some time with my 9-year-old daughter while the wife was at a healthy-oil shindig. Watched a movie this afternoon with the family (all of them...two legged and four), then worked on my work Halloween costume (I'm either gonna be the toast of the party, or sitting in HR being told in no uncertain terms that I'm the reason nobody in the entire company will ever be allowed to dress up again). After dinner....I needed sawdust. So it became a Steve Good kind of evening while the wife and kiddo sat around watching Christmas sap movies on the Halmark Channel. I know family time is important...but....I just can't. If you've ever seen one of those movies, you'll understand. I modded the base a bit. The pattern called for 1/4" BB with an oval base of 3/4", but I cut my pattern out of a nice piece of 1x12, so its thick enough to stand up on its own. So I extended the base a bit and rounded it off, and it stands up quite well. My wife was happy. Which, I guess, is the point. See? After 15 years, I'm startin' to get the hang of this marriage thing. Did some quick sanding to get most of the feathers off, I'll give it a more thorough sand tomorrow. Not sure if I'll go BLO for a finish or a dark stain. I'll have to ask where she plans on putting it, and stain opposite of whatever the background is (dark vs. light).4 points -

Well I think this is my 4th Scroll saw work done. I learned a lot from this one. Words like, oh cr*p and a few other 4 letter words were frequently used during the making of this. I think I broke it like 3-4 times. Did learn to use a spiral blade and when not to use one. Also used a #2, both from flying dutchman. After all said and done i think i bit off a bit more than i should have for so early in my journey. Pattern from Janevski in the pattern library. Was fun but so glad its done!3 points

I think that how often you need to change the filters will vary a great deal from one shop to the next.. some folks may not have any kind of dust collection at the tool source while other may have and not have much dust floating around.. To answer your question though.. I've had mine up just a couple of weeks.. and I noticed the outer filter is getting quite dirty already... I work quite a lot out in the shop too though.. and i don't really have much of a dust collection system set up yet so it might need cleaned more often that other shops would need to.. I believe you can just take the outer filter out and tap the loose dust off it or blow it out with a air hose ( outside of coarse otherwise whats the purpose of having the filtration ).. or maybe use a vacuum on it..I've read where people have been 10 years on that inner filter.. and I believe you can just wash those.. I think mine is a cloth type filter..2 points

My Trunk or Treat
Lucky2 and one other reacted to smitty0312 for a topic
I got asked at the last minute this morning if I would do a trunk or treat with them later this afternoon......so I put my thinking cap on......I made Charley Brown & Snoopy...1/4" ply....18" tall.....used spray paint and black marker...will be working out of my truck with topper.....not bad for last minute...plan on re-using next year possibly.....the only thing missing is the candy...comments are always appreciated....ty2 points -
It is always better to do some practice cuts like straight lines, curves, points etc., before getting back into scrolling, you will soon become bored and want to do something a bit more interesting. But I know what you mean, I had to have time away from my saw once and then kept saying I will scroll tomorrow but a month went past before I said ok lets get this thing started, so out I went, did some practicing and enjoyed myself more than before. Okay, so I did some experimenting today while cutting some ornaments... I just zip tied my 2.5" vac hose to my blade holder tray thing on my Hawk on the left side of it.. I then hooked up the vac to the foot switch and cut out a stack of 4 ornaments... It got about 95% of the dust.. and I didn't have the hose up close to the blade at all as I was trying to get it to be at the edge of the saw table so it might get the dust blown over to that side from the saws dust blower.. but that ended up ( most of it anyway ) blowing past the opening and landing on top of the hose back about 4 -5 inch past the hose end.. I'm thinking one doesn't need to go o such a small hose that is going to create so much more noise... I am thinking about just running a open hose with a T and a elbow.. the one opening would go to the underside near the blade.. the other end would come up to about the table height to hopefully get the dust on the top side that is blown over to the side by the blower... I may have to do a flex hose for the top to get closer to the blade and just not use the saws dust blower.. either way.. just thought I'd share the info about how just having the vac hose off to the side picked up much of the dust.. Maybe I'll have to buy some of the smaller flex hose to get the best possible collection.. but I really o not want to add to the noise level by going down to such a small hose..2 points

Hawk 226 VS (2004 model) Dust

Well, after viewing this little video, I just went to Amazon and put that kit in my cart for the next time I have a few extra bucks. My wife let me order that air filter so now, it's her turn to buy something she wants. I think she is wanting to buy a large area rug for our bedroom so that is going to set me back a bit. Oh well, that's why they call it a partnership.2 points -

Help Please
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
It is a wonderful hobby and I too am so happy I found this forum. The folks here are so welcoming and try so hard to help no matter what the problem or how basic the problem may be because they have all been there. Congrats in advance of your new saw. I hope you and your hubby take the time to research before buying. There are really only about 5-6 saws here in the U.S. worth buying if you are really serious. Way too many "hobby, imported" saws on the cheap.2 points -
I used to price mine on the degree of difficulty and timber used. Simple cuts from ply $5 to complex $10. Solid timber $10 to $20 (those with brass photo frames inserted.)2 points

I used a propane torch to soften up the end of my Tee PVC pipe then was able to fit the end of my 2" hose into it and then cooled it down with running it under tap water. That is the brown pieces of pvc pipe you see at the tee adapter. Not pretty but it works.1 point

No Kevin. It only has the manual/auto option on the switch. Mine is the older model that was still made in the original plant. I think that was in Italy but I won't swear to it. The vac is very quiet so I really think if I can get the noise at the pick up point to be quieter, it will be the best way to go. I'm going to do some experimenting with what I have now on my Dewalt to see if it helps. A trip to H/D to get some pvc fittings is in my future. I just have to figure out what I need. In order to use the original hose end, I had to adapt it to a "soft" fitting that could be squeezed down with a clamp. I'm going to see if I can come up with a larger fitting that the hose end will fit inside of that doesn't "neck" it down. Then into larger pvc piping that I can heat and bend to get it to the upper and lower points where needed. I know that pvc can be heated and bent but I have to find a way that doesn't allow the pvc to kink or neck down. I might try filling it with sand or something like that. Maybe rice.1 point

Some time my tremor causes unwanted "ripples" in the cut. Have been trying different ways to hand sand. Now I have taken broken sanding belt and cut into narrow strips. Then cut to length install set tension and sand away, no tremors ;-). See the video demo. IMG_0215.mov1 point

They have woodburning patterns that can "supposedly " be easy to follow just like scroll saw patterns... I don't know how hard they might be to do as I haven't tried them yet.. I only use the burner for personalizing ornaments and things..I hope to give a portrait burned project a try one day..1 point -

Great idea Kevin. I have been toying with the idea of pyrography but when I started looking at what they cost to get a decent burner and all the different tips, I sort of lost interest. I would still like to be able to "dress up" my projects when called for. I may have to sit back and see what all gets written about the subject here on SSV.1 point -
