  1. Had a go at stacking today. 3 pieces of 3mm plywood held together with gaffa tape. Was chuffed with the middle piece at the end of cutting. Hardly any fuzzies and no breakouts. I used a Pegas #3 spiral and still found it a bit quick. I still have a good bit of sanding where I have made mistakes but I’m beginning to enjoy sitting with bits of sandpaper whilst relaxing in the warm lounge. I’m aiming to split my time between learning flat blades and spirals. Think it makes more sense doing that My new quick realease arrived for the Hegner and it was a joy to use. So much quicker between cuts. You guys really motivate me and I appreciate it. Pattern by Shadylady0447.

    Saturday scrolling

I've got a honey do project coming up so decided to spend the day (after some leaf pick-up) practicing my scrolling. I really enjoy doing these tree/deer combos. Lots of practice making turns and nifty holiday decorations. The larger one still needs a base and they all need sanding/finish. Thanks for looking.

  3. I only do two events a year. My best one is the one I went to yesterday. Sales set another record. Up 8% from last year. Here are some pictures.

  4. I went to the Castle Rock Craft Show and did really well. Had a lot of foot traffic, sold all my Christmas Trees along with many other things. Welp gotta start making more trees for my next show. Also had a lady stop by and wanted to know if I would sell her some of my stuff at a wholesale price because she is wanting to put them into her store where she sells only Colorado Made items. I'm still thinking about that. Well here is a video of my booth and yest I will be back there again next year. Craft Show Display Thanks for looking. Jim

    Boston Red Sox plaque

Finished this yesterday and gave it a few coats of spray poly. This is Steve Goods pattern. It's made out of Oak and Walnut and it's 8 inch in diameter. The backer board is painted red. It killed me to do this for my brother because I'm a Yankee fan. I suffered through it though.

    One for my daughter

Some more Steve Good(ness) today! Been cutting stuff for myself (fun, testing, learning) and for my wife (self-preservation...occasional gifts to the wife help ease her willingness to let me spend hours out at the saw ), so I thought I'd do a cut for my daughter. She's into unicorns and ferocious warrior cats (its a whole series of books...never read them myself, but she's hooked, and I fully support a healthy reading habit!), and stingrays/sand sharks ever since a recent visit to the Austin Aquarium where she had the opportunity to feed the rays/sharks/turtles/birds (yeah....lovebirds, at an aquarium. Never understood that. Rays are fun, though, they're like little puppies, flapping up to the edge of the tank and trying to fly out, just to say hello. Or, more likely, see if you have any shrimp.) So, this afternoon was daughter-time. Steve Good pattern, one of the set of "You Quotes". Finished with Minwax Provincial. 1x12 whiteboard from Lowes. The cut was long enough that it barely fit in a 1-gallon Ziploc bag for staining, but it did fit, and I did manage to get all the little nooks and crannies coated.

  8. Five events in a row coming up starting next Saturday... cutting like crazy. Especially since I had a record breaking event 2 weeks ago and my inventory was depleted.

  9. With all the help and advice on learning to use the scroll saw I decided to make a gift for my father in law today. He has been a fisherman all his life so you can imagine my delight when I found a mariner based pattern by Travis. Also it was the first time using “real” wood instead of mdf or plywood. I reduced a lump of wood on the table saw and got it as smooth and flat as I could. I have no idea what the species is The base will be from the same wood I am still making mistakes but my confidence is growing and there was a brief moment when I found myself in the groove. As soon as I started over thinking the mistakes started. I have ordered a clock from Amazon and will make the hole for it when it arrives.

  10. Hello everyone!! I know that I haven´t been here for a time, but i´m back with this beautiful project. I really love cooking, but sometimes I don´t remember with the accuracy that i would like some of my recipes and have to think a little bit more about them. That´s why I imagined this project: a recipes notebook. But because we love scrolling , i had to include some cuts, and there is the result. The covers are made from 5mm plywood, in which i cut the letters, the fork and the knife. In english, it says "Ruben´s (that´s me) recipes book ". After that, I inked the cuts in walnut and glued back together in place, varnish all, put the spiral, a colored cardboard and a short dedication. Hope you all like it!!

    Adding to the Cats

I've been getting increased requests for cats lately so I'm going to broaden my offerings. Including this new one which I have a feeling is going to be rather popular. Harvey's attention to detail still blows me away sometimes.

    Baby's first christmas

Just finished this today. Wayne was able to add the 2018 on the bottom and also adjust it to fit my 1 3/4 insert. he did a great job. This is my Great Granddaughter.

  13. Nice. Using a smaller spiral (#1 or 2/0) would reduce sanding and handle wood that thick. So would a reverse tooth flat blade.

  14. Very nice! I still have not the courage to use spirals. Perhaps I should try some.

    Knob for clamp

I have struggled putting blades in my machine as I find my fingers don't work well enough to turn the knob to tighten the clamp. I've never mentioned it to anyone and just kept 'struggling'. Well,,,, without me knowing, my husband had noticed that I struggle and came up with this... It works brilliantly as it fits in my hand and I can turn it easily. So proud of him for caring enough

  16. I placed an add for state plaques of your choice and got several orders. I did not get a photo of a couple of them but here are the ones that I did remember to photograph. It was a fun venture and I am going to run the adds through December. However I am leaving this week for the entire month of November so my shop will be closed. I will repost my add when I return and see if anything else transpires when I get back. some were a little challenging but I did not have any breakage occur. That I am happy about. I hope to pick up some new customers from this sale as things have been pretty slow for me here in Arizona. The most difficult one was the Maine plaque and my favorite one is the Indiana plaque. Many thanks to Sam Custodio for the fun state designs. Dick heppnerguy

    craft show

Just got back from a craft show, wasn't the best did $124 which was mostly $5 ornaments, and one larger item for $25, those little items do help out. They never advertised in the local paper. Hopefully the next show will be better.

    Shelf Liner

I've had it happen too... BUT.. It had nothing to do with the shelf liner nor the pattern... some goofball put the blade in upside down so the blade was lifting off the liner/pattern... I'm not sayin who did that though.. Ray you stick the shipping label direct to the wood? That was what my original plan was when I started out to be... but the one batch I got was not sticky enough.. next batch I got once it stuck to something... especially something you didn't want it to stick to... it was stuck good.. no getting that off in one piece.. so i still use the liner.. or tape...

  19. Had mine for over 5 years and still humming like it was new, but I do not change speed very often. I just slow it down when I do intricate fretwork.

  21. I have an old cookie sheet I was able to talk my wife into replacing ("get you a new one." **30 seconds later** "Done!" ".....that was fast.") that I use for larger stuff. I like the bag, though, if the pattern will fit, because I can seal the end, and then just flip the project over and over and slosh the stain or oil around until I'm fairly sure everything is covered. I've used both, though, the Ziploc just happens to be my preference for now. When I start cutting bigger projects (ie, when my wife turns the tables and says "get a new saw"), I'll have to move back to the cookie sheet.

  26. I attended one meeting of a scroll-saw club up in the DFW metroplex (then found out later that same month that I was either going to move, or lose my job...I hate interviews, so we moved), someone was displaying a piece they'd done the previous month, a dragon or eagle or something with a LOT of holes where feathers or scales were. She mentioned having heard or read the Ziploc bag trick and how much easier it was than trying to jam a paintbrush into all the little holes, invariably missing some, and having to deal with darker splotches as stain got overlapped. I thought it was genius, since I hated that part of finishing, myself, for those very reasons. Been doing it ever since.

    My first intarsia

I've done a few Segmentations but I've always wanted to do this pattern since the 1st time I saw it. I actually started it in April of '15 but only able to work on it on and off. The plan was to have it done before the Eagles first super bowl, figured I had a lot of time and didn't have to rush. Oh well, it's for the 1st anniversary. I used Cherry, Aspen, Walnut and Red Oak. Luckily all the mistakes aren't noticeable from the picture but pretty happy with how it turned out and learned a lot.

  34. I would not toss that one. You could cut the part off that holds the clock, cut a new one and glue it to the base. You have plenty of meat there to glue to the sailor to the base base. Coarse this is almost as much work as starting over, but would save some of it. The base and clock could even be a contrasting pieces of wood.

    Castle Rock Craft Show

Congratulations Join m. Glad things went well for you. There was a recent discussion here I seem to recall about someone else being asked to sell “wholesale”. The general consensus was I think that most people would say this is my price. You may elect to mark it up to put in your shop if you wish. Most scrollers usually are selling pretty low priced for the work anyway. You could also offer a small percentage discount for “quantity” orders she places and takes at once. Just some food for thought. Thanks for sharing.

  39. Just beware this is clear finish so not yellowing or changing of color of wood. Stain before hand if you want that. Do you put cork on the bottom of your coasters?? I made a few sets over the years and that is what I did. Have not made them in a long time now. I may give it a go sometime again.

  43. Travis, I could possibly create one or two original puzzle ornament patterns but probably would not have the time to create 5. I'm attaching pics of the ones I sell at craft fairs. The patterns were given to me by several friends and I have no idea whatsoever if they are copyrighted. That's why they do not appear on my website.

I only make one of a kind pens these days and am into segmenting alot so I like to create new and different things. as far as time goes, some days none and other days I tell everyone do not disturb I am in a zone.
