  1. I have been working on this for a while and a few of you have suffered through my trials and tribulations of scanning and working on the patterns. Well, I told myself that I wasn't going to post pics until it was finished but heck, I'm getting to the point where I will be sanding, gluing and finishing pretty soon so here is where it's at right now. I have finished all the compound cuts and everything is fitting pretty well so tomorrow, I will be sanding. Then this weekend I will glue it together and put on the finish. I hope it goes smoothly from here. Any advice or comments are welcome.

    Here, Kitty!

I just finished this Alex Fox pattern. 330 cuts, Baltic Birch Natural Danish oil, mounted on 3/4” Poplar board stained about as dark as I could get it. I may move on to ornaments, or baskets, or maybe boxes for awhile.

  7. Well, this morning I got the phone call that I have always expected but it never came. Until today. I got a call from my Grandson. Or so it sounded like. But, I very quickly realized that it was a scam but I played along. I did all I could to make the person give me details that only my Grandson would know. They were pretty cagey and managed to give answers that were close but still not detailed. Anyway, long story short, I waited for the part where he asked for money and he supposedly had his attorney standing by on a conference line to give me all the details on where I should wire the funds. I very nicely told him that he was calling the wrong person because I didn't have that kind of cash sitting around and that he would be better off calling his father who he had already told me that he didn't want to get involved. Then, the line went dead. I know that these people are getting their leads and informational details from Facebook because I had just posted something to my Grandson last week and it was the first time in a long time that we had connected through Facebook. So, let this be a warning to all of you. Be ready to ask questions that only your friend/relative would know. It will sound like their voice and you'll even doubt yourself but I guarantee, it will come down to them asking for money and it's a SCAM!

    Boston Red Sox plaque

Finished this yesterday and gave it a few coats of spray poly. This is Steve Goods pattern. It's made out of Oak and Walnut and it's 8 inch in diameter. The backer board is painted red. It killed me to do this for my brother because I'm a Yankee fan. I suffered through it though.

  11. Pretty cool. And you call yourself a beginner. I guess there's hope for me. I tried to find where to buy the back issue containing this article but didn't have any luck. Do you know where I can get a copy? Thanks, Tom

  16. I have a piece of marble state in my shop that use to even things out. I keep it loaded with 120 grit but I have the equipment to make things easier. A good hard straight surface will correct a lot of things.

    Sanding issues

@trackman I would like to thank you for your valuable advise. I clamped some 80 grit to a flat and leveled surface and with a level and a square I got all my pieces butted up. Just took some determination and patience. Thank you, Thank you!!!

@SCROLLSAW703 I'd like it for human consumtion, just in case thats how she uses it. I thinking just natural oils like for cutting boards and such. Would I be correct wsith that?

Sorry Ray I'd post a picture but I can't figure it out on my laptop. I'd need someone to actually show me anyway I'm a visual learner. Thanks for trying much appreciated.

    Sanding issues

Boy I would be very scared telling you anything on a forum about the use of power tools. I suggest you find someone who can either teach you or do some of the preliminary work for you. Sanding edges flat even on flat glass is not easy to do. The pieces can rock and you are sanding edges and not the flat.

    Drill Press

I think of it as being more like a small Wen press but a little more substantial.I really like the small footprint of this one. I have a full sized Delta tabletop, but it has developed a slight wobble in the chuck that hasn’t gotten bad enough for me to deal with, but is on my list.

  33. Well thank you.. I am looking forward to being with family and I actually have the honor of giving my granddaughter away. How lucky is that. I recently decided to try a little glass etching with my Dremel and ended up making champagne glasses for the bride and groom as well as all the support people like best man and brides maid, along with their support people as well as one for the moms and one for the grandmother. It was like starting all over again with scrolling but with a new twist. I do have to say that I made some rather nice improvements on my etchings as I went along. I hope people will enjoy having that keep sake from the wedding to take home as a reminder of that day. Dick heppnerguy

    Here, Kitty!

extremely nice piece. I love the detail in it. Alex Fox makes patterns that are definitely challenging and you stepped up to the saw and cut it like it was alive. My hat is off to both you and Alex for all the effort both of you put into this pattern. It is truly a work of art Dick heppnerguy

  36. Howdy Mr. Ray, You're very welcome, my friend!:) You've done a fantastic job, Sir! I encourage you to keep tyin' into more difficult projects as you move along, Sir. That's how ya learn this hobby. And remember Sir, we are always here if you get yourself in a tight, or have questions about a project, blades, etc. And you can always call or email me anytime if I can be of help to you, as well, my friend. Don't hesitate!!;) I would also encourage you, if you haven't already, to go to Utube and look up a couple videos on blade sizes. You will be surprised at what information you can learn from just that itself. Your project looks great to me Mr. Ray. I would caution you when it comes time for finish work, though. Food for thought, Mr. Ray. Maple and Walnut have a tendency to not take finish as well as other hardwoods. I don't know what you have in mind for the final finish, but were it me, I believe I would just hit it with a couple coats of clear lacquer, then shoot it with two, maybe three coats of Watco clear coat and leave it be for three or four days to cure out. My experience with aromatic cedar has been if I sand it smooth before I even attempt to start working with it, I have much better luck with separation, and it's easier to handle as well. A lot of times, if aromatic cedar has been sitting for awhile, it kinda gets sticky, like pine does. I have even went so far as to fill a spray bottle with turpentine and sprayed it on the cedar, then wiped it down. That cleans off the sticky mess on the surface of the cedar, and then I could work with it. Best of luck to, Boss. Keep in touch! Sawdust703(Brad)

My hubby enjoys the money scams. Especially when they tell him he won a large amount along with a free vacation to anywhere in the world. He can keep them on the phone for almost an hour before they start cursing and hang up. His favorite is to try and convince them to subtract the money they need to "complete the process" from the amount they want to send. They really choke up on that one. Then they want his address he tells them they found his phone number so they must have the address too. But just incase they want to verify it the address is "123 my street." Anyway, he has a blast especially with a cell phone not listed anywhere because he very seldom turns on the thing.
