Made a couple of things for my wife today. Her name is Connie and the grandkids call her Nonnie. The cat is a cell phone holder. I had made her another one and she liked using it when using her phone for recipes. It fell and the tail broke off. Just had the one life I guess.

Very Nice Charlie. I buy the war office flowers almost weekly and often get a bit of good natured ribbing at the shops "What have I done wrong " My reply is "it's insurance"

  3. I usually don't do holiday-themed stuff....holidays are just another date on the calendar for me, for the most part....some of them come with an extra day or so off work to play in the garage (if my wife allows).

    Here, Kitty!

I just finished this Alex Fox pattern. 330 cuts, Baltic Birch Natural Danish oil, mounted on 3/4” Poplar board stained about as dark as I could get it. I may move on to ornaments, or baskets, or maybe boxes for awhile.

  7. This project doesn't really follow the guidelines of showing love for family other than, my wife requested a shelf stand with the only requirements being shelf measurements, as light as possible, and foldable. Here's what I came up with from cheap 2" x 2", cheap 1" x 2" lumber, and the shelves from Baltic Birch. All done on the scroll saw including the half lap joints. Approximately 58" tall by 35" wide. Folds to about 3 1/4" thick for storage. The last photo shows a closer image of the half lap joints and the pins that the shelves sit on when lowered. Of course, some of the 2" x 2" cheap box store lumber is either twisted or bowed but, it is still workable. If I had altered the width of the shelf, I could have made it close very near in the center but, as said, the size of the shelves were one of the wife's requirements. Thanks for looking and comments welcomed. God Bless! Spirithorse

  8. Well, this morning I got the phone call that I have always expected but it never came. Until today. I got a call from my Grandson. Or so it sounded like. But, I very quickly realized that it was a scam but I played along. I did all I could to make the person give me details that only my Grandson would know. They were pretty cagey and managed to give answers that were close but still not detailed. Anyway, long story short, I waited for the part where he asked for money and he supposedly had his attorney standing by on a conference line to give me all the details on where I should wire the funds. I very nicely told him that he was calling the wrong person because I didn't have that kind of cash sitting around and that he would be better off calling his father who he had already told me that he didn't want to get involved. Then, the line went dead. I know that these people are getting their leads and informational details from Facebook because I had just posted something to my Grandson last week and it was the first time in a long time that we had connected through Facebook. So, let this be a warning to all of you. Be ready to ask questions that only your friend/relative would know. It will sound like their voice and you'll even doubt yourself but I guarantee, it will come down to them asking for money and it's a SCAM!

Had an enjoyable afternoon in the shop with an old friend. He'll live on the cowboy wall in my shop. Gunsmoke and Bonanza make me think of my daddy. Thanks to @wild bill for a super pattern.

  10. Hello everyone!! I know that I haven´t been here for a time, but i´m back with this beautiful project. I really love cooking, but sometimes I don´t remember with the accuracy that i would like some of my recipes and have to think a little bit more about them. That´s why I imagined this project: a recipes notebook. But because we love scrolling , i had to include some cuts, and there is the result. The covers are made from 5mm plywood, in which i cut the letters, the fork and the knife. In english, it says "Ruben´s (that´s me) recipes book ". After that, I inked the cuts in walnut and glued back together in place, varnish all, put the spiral, a colored cardboard and a short dedication. Hope you all like it!!

  16. I too agree with this. I do what I can to not see the hole in the back. Some of the 2-3/4" inserts you have to drill all the way through but I still use a forstner bit. I just had to order a 42mm bit a couple days ago because of some inserts I have. Now I have used these inserts before but I either must have cheated the smaller bit to ream the edges of I had that bit somewhere but it is not to be found again. Hate when that happens and the memory does not work.

  18. I do not like making frames either. Not sure why, but I don't. One way I get around it is to cut the picture into a 3/8" or 1/2" board. But before cutting I route the side of the board to give it more of a frame finish look. Example:

  20. Thanksgiving has come and gone here in Canada but I do have to be thankful for our family. I have 2 daughters that have followed careers that allow them to help others. One is a nurse and the other is a principal in a public school. Very busy but they still have time for their families too. This project was inspired by Steve Good’s pattern sportingmoms.pdf My youngest has 3 boys that play hockey. Two play at AAA which means 2-3 practices a week and 2 games a week each. They play all over south eastern Ontario. The oldest also plays house league which means 2 games a week. My Son in law is a policeman and so it is up to her to makes sure that all the boys get to their hockey (we get called on often). They never miss and she loves it. She is the Super Hockey MOM and so Steve’s “Hockey Mom” was a perfect stocking stuffer. I reduced to 3 inches and then added the #1. It was my wife’s idea to eliminate the base. My wife asked if there was a lacrosse Mom for our other daughter. My Granddaughter plays elite Field Lacrosse and it is my daughter is her big supporter and chauffer. This summer they played all over southern Ontario, Michigan and upper New York. Fall and Winter 2 practices a week. Not one in Steve’s pattern book, so I made a pattern in Inkscape. Well, 2 out of the 3 ladies in my life are covered for stocking stuffers so I made the Hockey Gramma pattern and cut the same as the others. She is a big supporter of the Whitby Wildcats and makes whatever game she can arrange but still takes the others when required. My family busy and great sport supporters. All pieces cut from ¾ red oak using Flying Dutchman UR-5 and 3’s. Finished with Tung Oil.

    Here, Kitty!

John, it’s a funny thing. I put this up on Lumberjocks the other day and I got a letter from a well known member on there yesterday that really liked this piece. He makes really nice bowls and asked if I would be interested in swapping the cat for a couple of his bowls. I told him that I might be later, but that I had just finished this and my wife wanted to keep this one around for a while. We agreed to do a rain check.I did put a fair amount of time into this one and if I sold it for cash I would want a fair price, otherwise I’d keep it, barter it, or gift it. Thank all of you for your kind compliments. It’s always nice when other terrific artists/craftspeople like you folks appreciate one’s efforts.

  29. I've done some of the bigger ( wall clocks ) this way.. but only because the back side isn't visible to anyone else and ease of access to change time / battery... But I would rather not see a hole on the back side of a desk clock really.. Just my opinion I guess.. It is an option though for someone that doesn't make many clocks and don't really want to spend big money on a forestner bit...
    1 point
  30. Macman, instead of buying drills to make the clock holes, why don't you cut them out with your scrollsaw? That's how I do it, and I've never had an issue doing it that way. Len

    One for my daughter

Very nice! Great thing for a dad to tell his daughter. And yes, the reading is a great thing. I have kids from 15 to 33. My 15 year old has always been a crazy reader. She took her ACT last summer, before she started 9th grade, and made a 31. Lots smarter than dad!

    Drill Press

I do not. The router may work on something like basswood on small things. I have a small router table that can clamp onto a workbench that is powered with a small trim router that works very well. I have not tried the Dremel for rounding over bases for scrolled projects. But...the router works so very well for drilling patterns.I have 2 drill presses and find both much less convenient than the Dremel even though one drill press is next to my saw. Can't say enough good about the little Dremel router. But that is only my opinion.

  38. I have been working on this for a while and a few of you have suffered through my trials and tribulations of scanning and working on the patterns. Well, I told myself that I wasn't going to post pics until it was finished but heck, I'm getting to the point where I will be sanding, gluing and finishing pretty soon so here is where it's at right now. I have finished all the compound cuts and everything is fitting pretty well so tomorrow, I will be sanding. Then this weekend I will glue it together and put on the finish. I hope it goes smoothly from here. Any advice or comments are welcome.

  39. I am starting to put some of my things in a shop in Colorado. A gal called me and said she really likes the items she has seen on my page and wondered if I would like to put any of my work in her shop. So I agreed to do so and made a few of the ones she liked for starters. I will see how it goes from here. I also will be putting a few other items in the box to mail to her. Just letting you know I have not been laying around the house and staying out of my shop this past week. I have a few other items to add to the package and I will get them mailed off this week Dick heppnerguy

    Drill Press

This is why I'm kind of looking for another drill press... well actually I think the one I have will be fine for several more years if I just put my forestner bit in it and leave it set up for drilling clocks.. What I planning to do is get me a dremel with a plunge router attachment for drilling the small starter holes... then I won't have an issue with figuring out how to get holes drilled into the center area of the larger projects..

    Shelf Liner

Brad, I use the labels. I bought a package of 100 full sheet labels from some outfit on Amazon for about $8 if I recall. Free shipping for Prime members. Anyway, they are as sticky as the shelf liner and if left on for a while, I just use a heat gun to make them almost fall off. I started out using spray glue right onto the wood because I didn't know any better. The blue tape shocked me when I saw the price of it. I keep a roll for those times when I don't have a pattern printed on a label. Like this afternoon, I wanted to redo one piece of my project so I just ran in the house, scanned the pattern and printed it on a piece of white paper. Then back out to the shop and cut it to fit the wood. I did use blue tape and spray glue. By the way, I have 3M77 in a big can and it is very sticky. I also have a can of Elmer's. A nice small can, Easy to handle. I used it today for the first time and I like it. I may just switch to using it. Anyway, back to your original question. I find that the labels are great. I have a roll of shelf liner also. I will continue to use both as well as just blue tape and spray glue. I like them all.

    My first intarsia

I've done a few Segmentations but I've always wanted to do this pattern since the 1st time I saw it. I actually started it in April of '15 but only able to work on it on and off. The plan was to have it done before the Eagles first super bowl, figured I had a lot of time and didn't have to rush. Oh well, it's for the 1st anniversary. I used Cherry, Aspen, Walnut and Red Oak. Luckily all the mistakes aren't noticeable from the picture but pretty happy with how it turned out and learned a lot.

Creative, original and well executed. But with that spiral binding I think it will be difficult to add new recipes as the years go by, still you can always may volume 2.

  45. I don’t like conventional frames for fretwork and if possible I cut a backboard of ideally 1” stock, but will settle for nominal (3/4”) 1” stock. I feel that for many portraits they display better without being enclosed in a frame. I also virtually always rout out a keyhole slot for hanging them.

Well it's been a little while since I made any thing "NEW" and this was a request from a customer.. So I made the pattern last week and cut it out yesterday.. I've been trying my hand at making my own patterns.. After I made this and cut it I see a couple of changes I'll make on the next one I cut.. If this one sells that is.. Don't think it's a bad pattern but not much to really brag about either... Now today.. back to cutting stock in ornaments..
