    Medal Box

Another discovery in my search. I have made about 5 medal boxes in total, all slightly different. This one depicts a Light horseman on the front, the Rising sun badge on top and a famous photo of Australian troops taken on the Western front in WW1 on the rear. On other boxes I have changed the horse for a donkey in recognition of one of our most famous soldiers from Gallipoli, "Simpson and his Donkey" https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/encyclopedia/simpson

    Star Gate

I was searching some old drives looking for a particular pattern that I was sure I had, maybe I dreamed it, or I just haven't dug deep enough. However I came across some photos of a jewellery box I made for my wife. She need another as this one is over flowing now. enjoy. I used Pine, Jarrah and Merranti, and the bands are Tasmanian oak.

  5. The race to the finish line... Today was Mythical Day. Five Saturday events in a row coming up starting tomorrow. The weather forecast looks great for tomorrow and next Saturday, just need 3 more good weather days after that and end the season/year on a good note.

    Ornaments done

Finished these ornaments today just in time for tomorrows show. I reduced them to 70%, from the original 100%. Thanks Bob for the patterns.

  7. I usually don't do holiday-themed stuff....holidays are just another date on the calendar for me, for the most part....some of them come with an extra day or so off work to play in the garage (if my wife allows).

  11. Bastard of a thing this getting old mate. I have been putting down a floating floor in my Daughter's house, The constant getting up to the saw and down to fit the boards have played havoc with my knees. Should be finished this weekend, with the exception of the skirting. (I hope)

  17. I love to get those phone calls. It makes my day sometimes. I get them on the phone and tell them I am interested but to please hold on for a minute. then I put them on hold and play very horrible elevator music for them to listen to. I check back every few minutes to see if they are still on the line. You be surprised how many of them actually hang on. The older I get I find out It's the simpler things in life that I enjoy most.

  22. Here is the FAX answer tone on YouTube. Just play it through your computer when creating your phone answer message on your phone answering machine, then wait a couple of seconds after it ends and then add your voice answer message after it. The robots will hear the FAX tone, hang up, and remove your phone from their list. You do need to tell your friends and contacts not to hang up when they hear the tone, and to just wait to leave a message. Charley

  30. I never did realize how many of these robo calls or whatever scam calls come through since I retired. Some days the phone constantly rings. One after another. Other days nothing so there must be a pattern day. With that said another thing that has become popular in my area and want to strangle these people are the solicitors that ring the doorbell. Power companies solar companies, remodel companies, you name it they sell it. I tell the person to take me off the list and next week another guy shows up selling same thing. Now with crime the way it is these days you never know what is ringing the doorbell or on the other end they do not know what is behind that door. I have been meaning to have a sign made no soliciting

    Drill Press

I agree.. and the price of the Dremel one is more along the lines of $30.. But.. looking around on eBay and Amazon.. I have found a couple around $22 - 25.. I'd certainly pay the little extra for the quality made one JT mentioned..

I guess the greatest information I have gleaned from this discussion is JT's mentioning the luthier's Dremel plunge router attachment. A precision instrument made of beautifully machined brass and steel for $60. I think Dremel's price was about $20 or so. The quality difference is obvious.

  37. Like others said, it's not hard to believe considering the density of home improvement stores in most locations. Lowes used to be my go-to, but I've generally switched to Menards. I think the lumber quality is better and I just wait for the 11% off.

  38. I'm with Hermit on this one - got rid of our landline years ago and telemarketers/scam folks virtually eliminated - then got a voice mail service that screens out robo calls - now no "unfriendly" calls at all. Jay

  39. Hello everyone!! I know that I haven´t been here for a time, but i´m back with this beautiful project. I really love cooking, but sometimes I don´t remember with the accuracy that i would like some of my recipes and have to think a little bit more about them. That´s why I imagined this project: a recipes notebook. But because we love scrolling , i had to include some cuts, and there is the result. The covers are made from 5mm plywood, in which i cut the letters, the fork and the knife. In english, it says "Ruben´s (that´s me) recipes book ". After that, I inked the cuts in walnut and glued back together in place, varnish all, put the spiral, a colored cardboard and a short dedication. Hope you all like it!!

1 gallon Ziploc bag. Drop the project in, pour in some stain, and commence to slooshing it around until no more pale wood shows.

  43. Not really sure if I have a good one for this contest or not. I was always the introvert of the family, preferring Mountain Dew to everyone else's DrPepper, sitting in the den reading vs sitting in the livingroom screaming at a Cowboys (or Rangers) game, going hiking instead of to the mall, jogging vs. basketball. So big groups of family just make me feel uncomfortable. No matter what holiday we got together for, though (Dad was career Air Force, so large family get-togethers were not very common), there was always food. Didn't matter the time of day, there was something to nibble, snack on, munch, sip, or slurp. And so....a Thanksgiving trivet. Steve Good pattern, 3/4" whiteboard, stained Minwax Provincial. Currently drying, it'll go to work with me tomorrow for my "holiday" desk display.

  44. This project doesn't really follow the guidelines of showing love for family other than, my wife requested a shelf stand with the only requirements being shelf measurements, as light as possible, and foldable. Here's what I came up with from cheap 2" x 2", cheap 1" x 2" lumber, and the shelves from Baltic Birch. All done on the scroll saw including the half lap joints. Approximately 58" tall by 35" wide. Folds to about 3 1/4" thick for storage. The last photo shows a closer image of the half lap joints and the pins that the shelves sit on when lowered. Of course, some of the 2" x 2" cheap box store lumber is either twisted or bowed but, it is still workable. If I had altered the width of the shelf, I could have made it close very near in the center but, as said, the size of the shelves were one of the wife's requirements. Thanks for looking and comments welcomed. God Bless! Spirithorse

    Adding to the Cats

I've been getting increased requests for cats lately so I'm going to broaden my offerings. Including this new one which I have a feeling is going to be rather popular. Harvey's attention to detail still blows me away sometimes.
