More of a bandsaw project but these were lots of fun to make. I don't usually sell but I'm doing a Christmas Expo at my daughter's school. Cut these from 2X6's, pipes made of 1/2" and 1/4" dowels, eyes 1/4" carriage head bolts, carrot nose 1/4" dowel, brass nail buttons, arms are twisted #12 wire with white caulk on the finger tips, and caps are boys socks.6 points

I have one working scroll saw, band saw, table saw, skill saw, reciprocating saw, drill press, two cordless drills. I have a vintage router that may or may not work, the power cord is so cracked I'm afraid to turn it on without serious rubber matting between myself and the ground. I also have five old planes, anywhere from 1960's Sears to something that was probably handed down from my wife's grandfather's grandfather, all of which are in dire need of cleaning/restoration and sharpening. My wife asks why I have them if I don't use them.....then gets mad when I ask her why she has shoes she hasn't worn in a year or more. THEY'RE VINTAGE, AND EFFIN' COOL!!!5 points -
Are any of you folks into making wooden gear stuff? Clocks or gizmos?
RabidAlien and 3 others reacted to Rolf for a topic
I have built three clocks on request by the SSWWC staff. They were all very enjoyable to build. Two were designed by Brian Law the third by Alfred Mifsue. The first was a pendulum and weights driven clock, I still sell a metal hardware kit for that one. The second was a spring driven clock called the flying pendulum clock. It is absolutely fascinating to watch and a bit more challenging to build. The third one is electro-mechanical. It has a magnet and electronics to drive the pendulum. All three are in this book.https://www.walmart.com/ip/Making-Wooden-Gear-Clocks-6-Cool-Contraptions-That-Really-Keep-Time/48926984?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227076878279&wmlspartner=wmtlabs&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=189507900125&wl4=aud-566049426705:pla-293026869742&wl5=9004525&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=48926984&wl13=&veh=sem&gclid=CjwKCAiA8rnfBRB3EiwAhrhBGrf-p35nNjxI3iqilTiAnAV3UNTAy_w-mkDpTbfqYv18sNuUj88L8RoCjmsQAvD_BwE4 points -
One Dewalt (almost dead), one Seyco ST-21, and one Hegner. The Seyco gets the most use but I am trying to get more comfortable with the Hegner. I don't have an answer as to why I own three saws, other than I enjoy this hobby! Keith4 points

Well Brenda, I started out with a Delta Q3 which I picked up cheap on E-Bay. I had never used a scroll saw before but thought it looked fun and the saw was cheap enough to give it a go. The Q3 is a great saw but very aggressive cutting due to the "C" arm design and it is now getting on a bit. I did a lot of work on it though and still have it. Next I found a Diamond again on E-bay for £26. It had had a hard life in a factory but I fettled it up a bit and started to get to know it. Unfortunately I sold it for £70 when we emigrated to NZ as we were short of space in our shipping container. I really regret that decision. So I arrived in NZ with my trusty Q3 which continued to serve me well until I broke the tension lever. Thankfully this part was still available from E-replacementparts.com for $4 plus $28 shipping. The thought of being without a functioning saw was too horrible to contemplate so I started looking around for a backup saw. Unfortunately good saws here are very rare. I guess with a population of 4.5 million, not many of them are scrollers! Eventually I stumbled across a DeWalt DW788 type1 which was a real find as they are not sold here in NZ. I drove a 12 hour round trip to get it and enjoyed it for three months until there was a puff of smoke from the back of the saw and that was the end of that. I still have it and will try to find someone to look at it but I reckon its beyond economical repair here. So I continued on with my trusty Q3 until one day I saw a Hegner on E-bay UK that would ship via the Global Shipping Programme.... It took a while to get here and import duty added considerably to the cost but I now have a saw that I can pass on to my son. I just wish I had bought one before I left the UK. And kept that Diamond! My Q3 now eyes me reproachfully from the corner of the workshop. Rob4 points

I have noticed that many of you have 'multiple' saws. May I ask the reason for this ? Do different saws do different things? I have two saws one is a little Pin End saw that I still use, but then, when I came on here I found out about Pinless saws and the world that they could open up for me. I have an Axminster that I love but is it 'all' I need or do I need to prise open husbands wallet again ?? However, reading some posts and seeing photo's of peoples workshops, it seems that owning 2/3/4 saws is not uncommon and I just wondered why? Just being nosy really xxx Brenda3 points

Made from scrap wood. Sizes for each entire unit is about 30 inches long, 6-1/2 wide and 7 tall. These are toys, not intended to be models. Built sturdy enough that they should stand years of play. Also generic -- no brands implied either. Cut with scrollsaw . Used a lot of other tools too. Pattern by T. & E. designs as many of the ones I use are. Fun to make. Blue one is for a great grandson that likes to be with me in the shop.3 points -

I now have 2, and Excalibur 21 and a Hawk G4 26" that I just bought recently. I have always wanted a Hawk and the price was right. I love my Ex 21, and have not used the hawk much yet, if I don't like it when I start using it more I may sell it. But then again I doubt it, more than likely I will keep it and between the two I will have a backup saw.3 points -
Nosy is OK. I have a friend with 11 scroll saws. He is hoping to start a teaching program. I have one saw because that is all I have room for.3 points

Foxfold, I'm a relative newbie to this hobby too but I got interested in the different types of saws and found that there were really only a handfull of decent manufacturers. I started out with a used Dewalt, fixed it up and like it. Then I came across a deal on a Hegner that I couldn't pass up and bought it. After messing with it, I decided that either there was something wrong with it or I just couldn't adapt to it. About the time that I had decided to sell it, a great deal came up on an Excalibur 21. So, I had to buy that too. Then, I sold the Hegner. I now have two great saws. I really only have space for one but I'll suffer through. I don't know what I'll do if a deal comes up on a Hawk that is just too good to let go by. I may end up having an outdoor saw. Anyway, that's my story and I guess now everybody knows it.3 points

Bad Day Or Good Day.. Can’t Decide
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
When stack cutting BB or any plywood you have a couple things that you are trying to overcompensate for Different grain direction This what gives plywood the strength. All that glue that is used to hold those layer together and it is a different glue than what we use. So speed is reduced and also blade life is greatly reduced. As Kevin said there is that fine line where you can save time by stacking so many and actually slowing yourself down too much where you could have cut them faster with less in a stack. Stack cutting is where we can make up some $$$ in the end. We do not tell anyone about this secret though.2 points -

That sounds like good money once you get where you can cut them quickly. I'm still too slow. It even takes me a while just to get the patterns in place. And, I can't seem to remember to sand first and then cut. This project that I'm getting ready to do is going to require me to wet the wood and try to flatten the boards out before I can do anything. I ordered the red oak and it came in 4 foot long pieces 5 inches wide. All 5 boards are a quarter inch thick and they are all slightly cupped. I'm going to try wetting them and clamping them down to my workbench which is very flat. Oh, and I already cut them into the 9 1/4" lengths so I'll be working with shorter pieces. I'm hoping that they will flatten out. Only about a sixteenth at the most. Pray for me.2 points

What you couldn't get right today you will probably get right tomorrow, we have all had days like that, we just take a deep breath have a break and off we go again. I love this piece that you did, I always think of sitting in a park quietly and watching the birds. Fabulous work Brenda. Marg2 points

One EX-21 I used daily. One older Hegner Muilt-Max use once and a while. One Hawk VS226 only use on big projects. 1.5 Dewalts collecting dust. To explain the last I have a Type 2 on it's last legs and a Type 1 I had used over the years to keep the Type 2 working (motor shorted out on the Type 1). I have multiple saw because I do sell some and I can't afford to be without. For the record the Dewalt Type 2 and the EX-21 were purchased new. The others were purchased used.2 points -

For me, I have my primary saw, but I have an emergency back-up (both DeWalt's). I cut enough that I can't really afford to be out of commission for long, so having the back-up is a must. As soon as I hear my primary saw begin making the telltale sounds of wearing out, I order a new one and have it at the ready.2 points -
Why do I have two scroll saws set up? My husband probably wonders thst too. especially since they are in “his” shop. Technically, we have 3 “ in the house.,” but only two are setup. Actually, it’s his fault. We had the big yellow “Type 1” Dewalt. We had had it for many, many years but was little used. Then, when I got interested again and took some Intarsia classes, I purchased a used purple Excalibur from Seyco after using one at my classes. I was happy with that saw. I liked that saw. It’s a good Saw. But, hubby struggles with what to buy me for gifts. I am not a jewelry kinda girl. My birthday is the week after Mother’s Day. The new Seyco Saw came out and was reviewed in the Scrollsaw Woodworking and Crafts magazine shortly before that month one year. So hubby being a good hubby, ordered me the new Seyco Saw. That moved the Dewalt out of the workshop. One reason i keep the Excalibur setup is because you can tilt it more then the Seyco. I also like having both if something happened to one even though I do not sell. The big question is what we are doing with the Type 1 Dewalt. Since it’s a “Type 1,” I hate to just get rid of it. So it is sitting in the garage while I decide what to do with it. I keep hoping somebody in the family wants to learn.2 points

I just came in from cutting the 25 ornaments.. I did a video of cutting one of the ornaments also you'll get a glimps of the shop since I wanted to show what time it was and what time it was when I finished cutting all the 25 ornaments.. cutting on the Excalibur this time.. LOL anyway.. took me about 1.5 hours to cut the 25.. I've gotta eat my dinner now.. but hopefully I can remember how to upload a video again.. been about a year I think.. LOL But in the meantime.. yes I have 5 blanks of BBply.. blank size is roughly 7 x 7 all pre sanded and shelf liner on and then packing tape to hold the 5 pieces together.. drilled pilot holes and sanded the back before cutting.. Each pattern place (5 patterns) on the 7x7 stack of blanks.. 5x5 was 25 the last time I checked.. 1.5 hours cutting.. $15.97 each ornament.. not bad income for overall prep work and finishing will have me at about 2.5 hours..for that 25..2 points

I have about 18 routers so do not ask why. As far as saws yes if doing a business you can not afford to be shut down for any length of time. I am on the outs of my business venture and moving on because getting to old and the show circuit is not like it is and hate doing online selling. That is a huge hassle and the Gov. is making it worse. But also I have 4 saws and all were gotten with a price you could not walk away from. But glad I did have them.2 points -

Yeah, this issue with getting too many layers is that each layer does slow the sawing speed down.. and there is a fine line where you ask yourself.. is it worth lowing down a bit or cut another stack.. both take extra time... but you have to saw at a comfortable rate too.. I like cutting faster.. I find cutting several stacks going too slow and I tend to push too much on the wood.. which will burn through blades faster.. I typically cut 4 at a time.. in this case I needed 25 more and I'd have had to cut it a couple more times had I went my usual 4 at a time.. I figured it was worth a couple extra blades to get them all cut on this one set of 7x7 blanks.. and not have to set up sand and prep another stack for just a couple more ornament I would have needed..1 point

Well since I’m not a video techy and it was a large video in size I couldn’t upload it. Then I downloaded a app to compress the video which worked great but... the app saves the video in a different format that won’t work on YouTube. And apparently won’t work on my phone now either so I can’t even play it on my phone. Thankfully I did snap a picture of the stack before doing the video. And was able to grab a screenshot of the stack after cutting.1 point

I have a lamp very similar to Ray's lamp. Mine is LED with a 5X magnifier. I cannot use the magnifier as it is too strong. Trying to focus with that strong a diopter bothers my eyes. I use magnifiers with about 1.5X strength. Others here may like the 5X. I also use reading glasses with 1.75X magnification. I don't like my nose too close to the saw. I do love the LED lighting. Also I do not attach the lamp to the saw as I do not enjoy the light vibrating. My saw is very smooth but there are harmonics that cause the lamp to vibrate slightly. Other opinions may vary.1 point

Another discovery in my search. I have made about 5 medal boxes in total, all slightly different. This one depicts a Light horseman on the front, the Rising sun badge on top and a famous photo of Australian troops taken on the Western front in WW1 on the rear. You know... I talked about this on another site ( not a scroll saw site but a online sellers group ) and it just made me sick what many others said.. They said to package it and ship it that way with insurance and then when the customer complains of a broken item claim it on the insurance get paid for that one and another by the insurance claim... Just sad how many dishonest people are out there like that.. You know.. I like getting a bargain as much as anyone else does... but I like mine to be honest deals... Yeah every now and then i like to tell some tall stories etc.. but when it comes right down to dealing and doing business.. honesty is the only way.. at least for me.. Probably why shipping prices are so high.. all the people scamming the shipping companies... A couple years ago I ordered a laptop charge cable on eBay.. the seller sent the wrong one.. after I contacted them they commented that they sent out the correct one right away and when I receive it told me to carefully open the box and switch the cables out and carefully tape the box back up then mark it return to sender... This way nobody has to pay extra for the mistake.. well except the postal company.. that comes out of their profit.. needles to say.. I just packed it up and bought a shipping label... I'm not getting caught up in some other person fraud just to save $51 point -
