    More Christmas

Finally got around to shooting pics of some Christmas ornaments. Almost all of these go to family. The simple snowflake count was 37. (First picture) The birds on the birdhouses are not glued. I will let my sister pick the bird for house. She wanted some for her friends.

  4. Not usually this busy this early in the season. Actually the whole year has been a little busier but not usually this busy until after Thanksgiving. Did 4 custom / personalized orders tonight and then this big order.. Got burned out on personalization so I removed the contact for custom order buttons from the website, at least until I get caught up.

    It is well

Cut the musical note version today. 1/2" oak ply. Letters were no problem, the notes/bars on the right pushed the limits of my saw. But....it performed like a champ and we got it done. Tomorrow...well...tomorrow will see some Advil, some sanding, and a frame.

  7. To the person who's idea it was to spread the glue onto greaseproof paper and drop the to be glued piece onto it I would like to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. You have been a God send. I have had so many Aussie football plaques to do and if it was not for this piece of advice I would be screaming by now. So once again, THANK YOU. Marg

  8. Well, my new spiral blades arrived yesterday !! So off I went like a big kid this afternoon to try them. Oh Boy !! They are something else aren't they? They chew up everything they touch,, and when you realise you are going the wrong way and try to move them out of harms way, they chew that up too !!! Amazing... A little difficult to put in the clamps,, the bottom end went in fine but then when I went to put them in the top clamp the 'flat end' was facing the wrong way, so got a pair of pliers and held it straight while I clamped it. In the end I tried to cut part of my 'go to' simple pattern and although all the 'wobbly' don't have total control bits are pretty obvious, and I seem to have 'aquired' a nest for my birds I really quite liked it. I'll keep practising until I feel more 'in control' of this 'runaway blade' as I'd love to be able, one day to do a 'picture'. But till then I'll stick to my 'straight' blades. Many things I am but Constable I'm not

    Farmers Friends

Made from scrap wood. Sizes for each entire unit is about 30 inches long, 6-1/2 wide and 7 tall. These are toys, not intended to be models. Built sturdy enough that they should stand years of play. Also generic -- no brands implied either. Cut with scrollsaw . Used a lot of other tools too. Pattern by T. & E. designs as many of the ones I use are. Fun to make. Blue one is for a great grandson that likes to be with me in the shop.

  13. May I recommend slowing the saw speed and your feed rate. Spirals take some time to get used to. They are a tool that scrollers can use for larger projects.

  15. That could be a hornets nest. Bird nests usually set on top of the branch. Thanks for sharing your experience. I've yet to try spiral blades but plan to order some soon. Looks like a completely different skill set required. Tom

  16. My suggestion is to do practice runs in some scrap wood that you are using. I say this because every wood cuts differently. Every blade cuts differently. Practice to see what way is best to cut with the table tilted one way or other. Practice which way is better for you to cut right or left. All this comes into play and practice cutting the stacking of dissimilar woods. Again just my thoughts.

    Orbital Sander

The sander will get very light use so I'm sure it will suffice. I used to buy on craig's list and also sold. These days it easier to drive 10 minutes to HF.

    Christmas cut

Thanksgiving is almost here, so I needed something to replace the Thanksgiving Trivet (Steve Good) hanging on the wall at work. So....another Steve Good pattern. The dude is so good, the word "good" was named after him. (sorry, been a long day, that's the best I could come up with. No worries, I won't quit my day job) 1/2" Oak ply, cut amazingly well with few feathers to clean up afterwards. Also planning on working a couple of my own patterns this weekend, the "It Is Well With My Soul" pattern with the musical notes for one of my wife's friends, and the "Queso IS Life" just because queso deserves the recognition. Haven't decided if I'm going to try painting the little blob of queso on the "e" or not.

  22. I got Olson #2 as I thought at least if I could 'see' the blade I would be ok. I can understand why people like them, in someways they open up a whole new world, especially for the wildlife scenes I'd love to be able to do. Jump in, have a go and let us know what you think. I'd be interested in a more experienced scrollers thought about using them for the first time.

  23. I do LOTS of inlay! I use 3/8" wood and cut at a 2 Degrees. With 1/2" I would guess one degree. As suggested, Make trial cuts on 1/2" stock and find the required angle

  27. Determining what way to angle the table will depend on what direction you want to cut in.. As JT said.. play around with some scraps to get the corrected angles.. Another issue I've had with bevel inlay ( i've only done this a couple times so I'm limited on experience ) is the wood cupping before I got my project finished and glued.. so then the piece didn't want to fit too well.. so keep that in mind as you proceed.. Not sure if one was to seal up the wood would prevent the cupping or not.. When I did my last inlay.. I gave myself some thickness room with the intent to run the inlayed board through the planer afterwards if needed.. A drum sander would be a better fit for doing that... but I don't have one of those yet..LOL I'm kind of thinking with a 1/2 board and a number 5 blade would need to start your angle at about 3* for a test cut and adjust from there... but I could be wrong.. just an uneducated guess, LOL Like to see this once you get it done... even some progress photos would be cool.. Good luck and have fun with it..

I have a one day coupon for Sunday only. Regular $33.99. On sale at $19.99. Cheap enough. I also have a 20% off coupon but I don't think I can use it on a sale item. I can get some shop towels or something with the purchase. I already have a dozen tape measures.

    Orbital Sander

Sorry to hear someone walked off with your sander... I bought a harbor freight orbital sander years ago and loved it... used the crap out of it.. then the dust bag finally just gave up.. I wanted to replace the bag but couldn't find anything.. sooo... I went and bought another sander.. figured the bag would be as much as a sander anyway.. and I could use both sanders for different jobs... anyway... long story short.. the sander had changed from what my first one was and the new one is way too aggressive and no variable speed... fastest running OS I've ever seen.. I couldn't use it for anything with my fragile pieces and even sanding blanks was a pain to hold onto the sander.. I wouldn't recommend buying it if its still the same as the newer one I have... I'd let you have mine but... but shipping would be half the cost of the one you can get from HF anyway... at least they are pretty good about returns and I'm not.. Anyway.. just an idea but maybe look on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace to see about getting a better one..

  49. Thanksgiving has come and gone here in Canada but I do have to be thankful for our family. I have 2 daughters that have followed careers that allow them to help others. One is a nurse and the other is a principal in a public school. Very busy but they still have time for their families too. This project was inspired by Steve Good’s pattern sportingmoms.pdf My youngest has 3 boys that play hockey. Two play at AAA which means 2-3 practices a week and 2 games a week each. They play all over south eastern Ontario. The oldest also plays house league which means 2 games a week. My Son in law is a policeman and so it is up to her to makes sure that all the boys get to their hockey (we get called on often). They never miss and she loves it. She is the Super Hockey MOM and so Steve’s “Hockey Mom” was a perfect stocking stuffer. I reduced to 3 inches and then added the #1. It was my wife’s idea to eliminate the base. My wife asked if there was a lacrosse Mom for our other daughter. My Granddaughter plays elite Field Lacrosse and it is my daughter is her big supporter and chauffer. This summer they played all over southern Ontario, Michigan and upper New York. Fall and Winter 2 practices a week. Not one in Steve’s pattern book, so I made a pattern in Inkscape. Well, 2 out of the 3 ladies in my life are covered for stocking stuffers so I made the Hockey Gramma pattern and cut the same as the others. She is a big supporter of the Whitby Wildcats and makes whatever game she can arrange but still takes the others when required. My family busy and great sport supporters. All pieces cut from ¾ red oak using Flying Dutchman UR-5 and 3’s. Finished with Tung Oil.
