These are fun little cars to make for the toddlers in your family. They fit in their little hands really well. I uploaded the pattern to the library in case anyone is interested in making some stocking stuffers. I finish mine with non toxic dye I get at Hobby Lobby and mineral oil in case they decide to take a bite. Hobby Lobby may have quit carrying this dye. It's FolkArt brand dye. Here it is on Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/d/Art-Paints/FolkArt-Assorted-Colors-5614-Tantalizing/B01ETT4IK0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542748110&sr=8-1&keywords=folk+art+dye9 points

I made Dark Tower night light as a birthday present (Sauron would be proud). The back layer is frosted glass, I mounted a color changing LED bulb to allow the user to change its color and add a soft glow light to a dark room. Aside from the frame, this was made using 1/8" plywood. I used a airbrush to color the wood.5 points

Howdy all. I love running SSV and am happy to provide a place for folks to talk shop. But, SSV is a big place with lots of posts, forums and other nooks and crannies, it's hard to keep up with. If you need my attention for whatever reason, please tag me or send me a PM. Otherwise, there is a high likelihood that I'll miss your post. Tagging is great for mentions, or questions for a person that are relevant to the thread. You can tag any member by putting the @ symbol before their name. This will put a notification on their notification bell at the top of the screen. So mine would be @Travis. Naturally, private matters should be done with a private message. It's also a more direct way of reaching me. If you're having trouble with SSV, you can either post in the Help & Feedback forum. You can also open a support ticket. You can do from the main navigation at the top of the screen: More>Help>Submit A Help Ticket. These are the first 2 places I visit when I log in each day. If a particular post is problematic, you can always click the "Report Post" in the upper right corner of the post. A moderator will take a look at it. I hate missing questions directed at me and it goes unanswered. I don't want anybody to think I'm ignoring them. I probably just missed it. I hope this helps. Thanks All!4 points

Just a heads up the exploded view on page 61 of the latest printing of the book. The parts labeling is shifted to the right by about 1/8. I have made Fox Chapel aware of this. Also any changes or correction for the clocks that I was involved with are posted on Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts forum. https://forum.scrollsawer.com/forum/magazine-and-members/publisher-feedback Or feel free to contact me with any questions. For the record I did not use a CNC or Laser for any of the clocks. They were all cut on my scroll saw. Rabid Alien the Vietnam book looks to be a very interesting read.3 points

Shop heating and cooling.
OCtoolguy and 2 others reacted to NC Scroller for a topic
There is one trick for shop heating I have learned over the years. It is better to keep close to a constant temp. In other words don't try to warm a 40 degree shop to 70. Steel and cast iron retains temperature for a long time and if you attempt to warm the air quickly you create condensation which leads to rust.3 points -

Color Copies $$$
RabidAlien and one other reacted to Rockytime for a topic
This is just for information. I had the B & W pattern (shown below) enlarged and copied in living color. I had four copies made @ $1.56 each.I don't know what it would cost to have enlargements made in B & W though. I think for most persons it may not make any difference but the red does help my old eyes quite a bit. I think the price is quite reasonable.2 points -
Those wheels are an illusion at least they always are for me. Notice the little white portions connecting the rims to the background. Like you I do not visualize too well so I have to look at those little things. I have a pattern of a John Deere tractor to cut. I have to slow down and try to see what holds what together. You'll do OK.2 points

The original pattern has been found! The Phantom Scroller had posted this pattern March 5 over on the Scrollers Café and has just reposted it this morning! I don't understand why this pattern was not put into the Café archives but I do have copies of it now safely downloaded for the future! I want to thank everyone for all of your searching for the pattern and your responses, thank you so much!! Erv2 points

Shop heating and cooling.
RabidAlien and one other reacted to tomsteve for a topic
absolutely! i have never heard anyone say something like: 'i shoulda built my shop smaller" or "i should have insulated less" or "i should have got a smaller heater" or "i should have bought less lumber" or ......... although an ex girlfriend once said,"do you need all that lumber?" which contributed to the 'ex' part.2 points -
Packaging this weekends sales today.. and while boxing up ornaments I thought maybe you all would like to see my method of boxing the ornaments.. I get these little clear top gift boxes from Papermart or.. Uline.. The sizing is just about perfect for a business card to fit into the box.. and I also buy little stickers that I stick n the sides to hold the top on during the shipping process.. One customer mentioned they wanted to do another purchase from me but had lost my business card.. when she was unpacking and putting up her tree.. she come across my ornament box that while torn to get open.. had the remnants of these little stickers with my web address on them.. so kinda serves two purposes I suppose.. We have a pretty cold morning today.. so since it's my birthday.. I'm staying inside and working on getting orders ready for the post office... This is ornaments I sold over the weekend.. Now I need to get these packaged in the boxes and mailing labels put on so i can move onto the 4 clocks and 2 Portraits I sold.. P.S. I've gotta reply to this message with the photos because they are on my phone and I'm on my PC at the moment.. So if you see this before I get the photos up.. they're on the way in just a minute, LOL2 points

I quickly reached a plateau with my Scrollsaw efforts after the first few weeks. However for a brief few minutes this afternoon I realised I was holding the wood down without using the death grip I had developed and the blade was cutting the wood without being deflected. As soon as I gave it conscious thought it went back to normal I spend ages looking through all the threads that you guys post of your outstanding work and usually think that there will be no way I could be as good as you. However feeling that wee bit more encouraged today. I still cut awkwardly and lose the line often but the positive from today’s cut from a Travis pattern was that I was confident to spin the wood at the right angles2 points

Looks great Macman. Love the “death grip” comment, I also find myself doing this when I use flat blades. But I’m having fun practicing as I’m sure you are too.2 points -

My garage is 30x33 with R19 walls, R30 ceiling and insulated doors. I use a 50,000btu bigmaxx gas heater. The gas bill for the year was an extra $120, not bad considering I kept it at 68 all winter 24-7.2 points -

My shop is also 24x30, stand alone and well insulated walls and ceiling. I have a woodstove in one corner that does the majority of the heating and a 220v electric heater in the opposite corner that I can use to raise the temp quicker on really cold mornings. I also set the onboard thermostat at about 35 during really frigid weather to keep everything about freezing at night. For cooling I just use a 5000 btu window a/c. It does OK, but when it dies I'd probably upsize to a 8k or 10k. If I were starting over from scratch, I'd still have some kind of wood heat, but would consider a mini-split for cooling and auxiliary heat.2 points

Rolf, I attempted to make the first clock in your pictures as my second project when I started scrolling. I was only able to get it to run for a couple minutes at a time. Made some noobie mistakes. I have the plans for the electro-mechanical clock and that will likely be my next attempt. I have been looking for the electronics to run the clock with and haven't been able to find some place to purchase them. Can you let me know where you got them? Phil1 point

Finished but !!
Foxfold reacted to loftyhermes for a topic
I dip most of my work in Danish Oil, dip it let it drain a while then wipe off the excess and let dry, the only stuff I don't finish is if it's in contact with food or heat, I leave that up to the customer to put on a finish if they want.1 point -

Excellent work. I really like that design. I'd make some for our grandson, but he already has 2 boxes of mixed vehicles I've made for him.1 point

This is why I feel putting up walls and insulating the crap out of a small area is a smart idea.. because I'm not wasting $$ to heat / cool a whole building year round... It adds up quick to heat a whole shop.. and my shop could easily be condensed down to about a 12 x 20 or less area.. rather than heating a 24 x 32 lower level and a 14 x 32 upper level, LOL That's a lot of wasted energy to keep all that warm / cool.1 point

I have made the workee plaque and I think the coffee cup is one I think I saw at Steve good. I will check and see if I find it and let you know if I find it Sorry checked Steves site no luck1 point -
This is something I'm also looking into.. Not so much for the A/C but heat might be helpful.. I'm one that doesn't mind the cold until it gets below 25F in my shop... then i have to wear gloves and turn my LP little buddy heater on... So this topic I'm finding quite interesting.. My issue for heating is going to be.. 1) I have a upstairs and heat is known to rise.. and not really interested in putting doors up etc to block off the upstairs.. My other thought was to make a shop partition with walls etc.. and heat only a small area.. but then.. I don't really want to put a wall down the center of my shop.. as it makes it pretty cramped for doing work on cars on the sides... nothing I hate more is trying to do a brake job up against a wall... My shop is 24 x 32.. and I should have made the 32 the width instead of depth.. I always was backwards LOL...1 point

How steep of a bevel should I cut?

I have posted about this book before here on SSV but if you are truly interested in double bevel cutting, the best book on the subject is this one. https://www.amazon.com/Art-Marquetry-Schiffer-Book-Woodworkers/dp/076430237X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542663174&sr=8-1&keywords=the+art+of+marquetry $14.99 on Amazon.1 point -
How steep of a bevel should I cut?
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
This is where the Excalibur saws come in and shine... I've done the double bevel years ago on my DeWalt.. having that table tilted even as minimal as it was... throws you off and just weird feeling.. I did my latest piece on my Excalibur... It was soo much nicer to use in doing those bevel cuts.. One big reason I do hang onto the Excalibur...1 point -
