A number of years ago I have made these for my parents spread out over several Christmas's. The Lord's Prayer and 10 Commandants are made from 1/8" Baltic birch and the 23rd Psalm is 1/8" walnut. Mp parents are both gone and my sister had gotten the house they lived in and no longer wanted them so I got them back. I felt that my parents would love the fact that they are now in a church. I donated them to the church my wife and I attend.5 points

I have just created a album with some photos of toys I have made. These are all MDF, with some other timber. I did this to show that MDF can be finished to a high quality, and is a very stable medium. The larger pieces I sprayed (Compressor and Gun) The puzzles are painted with a brush then a couple of coats of clear Lacquer. The Kiddies tables and chairs are MDF melamine coated and the edges and pattern I painted with acrylic paint, a couple of coats. The green VW was made for a 3 and 4 year old brother and sister. When they reached 10 it was given to their younger cousins. When they out grew it it was given back to me and with only a few minor scratches to be touched up and auctioned it for a charity. Many of these will outlast me. I have seen a dolls cradle at a garage sale etc.4 points

Well I finally finished the project. My wife loves it. I have learned a lot that I can now better myself on other projects. I used Rapid Re-sizer to enlarge the pattern (42 pages of 8.5 x 11 ") cutting each staff piece individually and gluing together. This has been made from all 1 x 10 pine with the notes stained with dark walnut and the staff with semi-gloss spray. I left the staff to have a hand drawn effect hence the irregular lines/spacing.3 points

MDF is not EVIL
OCtoolguy and 2 others reacted to Phantom Scroller for a topic
John I don't think people say it's not a good medium to make things from it's the dust it creates and damage to your lungs I don't care if you wear a mask it's when you take that mask off it's still in the air and sticks to your lungs and you go back later it everywhere you won't convince me to use it sorry John. I tried it on my CNC never again. If it works for you then fine keep doing what your doing. Roly3 points -
Here is a fantastic deal on a Hegner with all the upgrades if you are anywhere near So Cal. $150. https://ventura.craigslist.org/tls/d/scroll-saw-18-hegner/6753869910.html3 points

I avoid Black Friday shopping like the plague. However, I received a sales email from Michael's Crafts a couple of days ago. Michael's is my only available source for BB plywood in this area. They had a buy online, pick up in store sale of 40% off. I jumped all over that. I picked up the items from the store and walked out without having to stand in any lines. Feeling pretty good.2 points

Download help
WayneMahler and one other reacted to ScollSaw Slasher for a topic
If can't get it to work, might have to do an uninstall and a fresh download with a new install. Sometimes we can get these computers confused. LOL. I'll agree with Wayne that the desktop should only be used for shortcuts to keep confusion to a minimum. As to Gimp versus inkscape, they're two different beasts and have different uses in the scrolling world.2 points -

All saw dust is bad for us. MDF is some of the worst because of the chemicals used to make it. It is only evil in that perspective.2 points -

At a small market
Phantom Scroller and one other reacted to John B for a topic
G'day all, I am currently at a small market in Kalgoorlie. Handmade items only. Only $20 bucks a stall. Am in front by about $65 at the moment, so we\ll see how it ends up. 2 hours to go.2 points -
Also agree with Ray.. all of my saws other than my DeWalt was bought from facebook marketplace and or craigslist... most expensive saw was the still new boxed Hawk 226VS Ultra.. paid $400 for that.. $360 for my new still boxed Excalibur EX21 and $100 for my Hawk 220VS.. so for less than a new Hawk.. I bought three saw all higher end saws.. That said.. If you really want new.. ( I love to buy new now and then and understand how the feel of being able to return the saw no questions asked too) I wouldn't be scared to buy the Delta.. In fact when I started my hunt for a back-up saw.. I was seriously looking at the Delta.. until I found that first $100 Hawk. then the second popped up even though I wasn't really looking.. couldn't pass it up.. being new in the box.. then the EX showed up.. now I don't need any new / used saws for quite a long time I don't think.. The Delta saw I feel is a good saw..and I do think the parts are pretty much the same as DeWalt.. I'd buy the Delta in a heartbeat if I was looking for new and on a budget.. even though I don't like the NEW delta company as they do seem to discontinue parts and do things I don't think is really right.. seems to be the way most companies these days are..2 points

Sand Flee?
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
Interesting thread about space and tool and such. I m the one who said I use my home made sand flee on dovetail boxes and such. I did not spend much on it and is the BEST way for me. I buy most of my tools with the primary concern of how easy they will be on my body. I buy Festool Sanders because they are the easiest on my wrists and hands. I have had both wrists rebuilt and have to be very careful. The homemade sand flee and a Supermax drum sander both reduce how much sanding I have to do with a sander.2 points -
Did you see the one I posted a while ago? A Hegner with all the upgrades for $150. I'm tempted to go buy it just to resell it.2 points

Ornaments For Charity - 2018 Edition
meflick and one other reacted to Hudson River Rick for a topic
Thank you to all who took their time to contribute to this worthy cause, and Thank You Travis for putting this effort together. My wife, Ann Marie volunteers at an organization that send meals to families that are affected by cancer. I just finished cutting and oiling 75 ornaments to include in the deliveries sometime in December. Even though I don't agree with this politcally correct nonsense, I tried very hard not to OFFEND anyone by not concentrating soley on my Christian beliefs. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all or the best of the season to those who prefer.2 points -

While we are on this subject, I was just telling my wife today that all I want for Christmas is an "in-person" class on both Inkscape and Gimp. I have watched a bazillion videos on both and am still confused on how to use them. I would be so much better off if I could take an actual class where there is an instructor present to ask a question of. Have any of you folks ever attended a class? I'm just curious as to how you went about learning the programs. And what would you call this type of program. Are they graphical manipulation or what? What type of class am I looking for? I know if I took one class it might make learning all the other graphics programs easier to understand. I know, I'm old and dense. But, I'm not stupid.1 point -
MDF is not EVIL
Phantom Scroller reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
I believe MDF gets the reputation it deserves. It is a manmade product with adhesives and finely ground products and other ingredients. I have no idea what Australia MDF is compared to what is made and imported in the states. All dust is bad for the lungs and that includes all woods, concrete and even ordinary house dust. Precautions prevail in the use or the proximity you are to this stuff. Dust control is very important when using MDF. Yes it is stable and very flat because it is a man made product that does not move but will warp. It is used here as well in the cabinet industry but the machines and dust control that is used is far superior to what the homeowner uses. Once painted and sealed it is fine but if broken then you now exposed the same risks again. It is a heavy product so that must be taken in consideration. If worked in a small enclosed shop that dust will get on all things and be the enemy it is for a long time because it is stirred up again and again. Containing at the source is the best way to control. I do not use it and have on occasion for odd projects. Too many other things that can be used and the dangers are in the shop all the time and if there is one possibility I can eliminate a danger I sure will try. This is one reason I try to do all my hand sanding out doors all year long. Just one factor I can at least cut down on. Your projects all came out well and look great. I am sure they are being enjoyed by many. Keep up the good work and thanks for showing. But work safe.1 point -

Look for a second icon for gimp. I always install programs from a folder rather my desktop. And have it create the desktop icon. You can also look in the programs listing to see if it is there.1 point -
ray, ive been using bob smith ca for years now and have yet to use an accelerator. ive read they work great at speeding up the acceleration time but i find patience works good, too. basically, one side is sprayed with the accelator and the ca is applied to the other ive read its possible to make a DIY accelerator, too.however i think it would be wise to keep glue and accelator brands from the same company. oh- and if you have an rc car, plane, boat, etc type hobby shop, you can probably find them there.1 point

MDF is not EVIL
Phantom Scroller reacted to John B for a topic
Roly and Lawson I can understand you concerns, and it is entirely a choice whether to use MDF. Australian Safety standards for MDF recommend the wearing of aP1 mask, the same type that is quite adequate for any other woodworking operation along with safety glasses . They also recommend the wearing of the same category mask when working with Soft and Hard woods. I must admit, that sometimes after routing the stuff I do look a little like a snowman, but then again after sanding Jarrah I look like a mud hole The formaldehyde levels in Australian MDF are a fraction of the amount considered as possibly dangerous by the world health organisation. I can not say that about the stuff used in some imported cabinets as you smell it leaching out.1 point -
To save a pattern from the library, right click on the image of the pattern, and save it to a folder on your computer. Don't know what is going on with your Gimp.1 point

How to "uncup" my new wood
OCtoolguy reacted to SCROLLSAW703 for a topic
Hello Mr. Ray, To be honest, with the width and length you have to take into consideration, were I you, I would lay it flat on the concrete floor in your shop for the time being, and get some sort of weight down thru the length of the material until you are ready to work it. The more weight the better, but be cautious to distribute the weight equally the full length and width of the material. With the humidity, the flattening process will begin as the wood takes on moisture and the stress points begin to release with the pressure of the constant weight on it. Sawdust703(Brad)1 point -
I just have to convince my wife that it's a great deal. I just looked to see the driving time. It's about 80 miles each way for me but with the SoCal traffic that's about 4 hours at best. I'm thinking though.1 point

I'm sort of confused over the whole C/A glue subject
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to JAC1961 for a topic
I buy fairly large (probably 8-12 oz) pump bottles of Starbond from Amazon. I've never used any of their CA products, but I've used epoxy from Bob Smith Industries and been very happy with it. (also available on Amazon) As far as I know, accelerator works with all varieties of CA. BTW, I just had a container of gel CA that wouldn't set up without accelerator. I looked at the date on the bottom and decided that "2014" meant it was no longer good, lol.1 point -

Iggy when arre you going to finally step up to a real saw??? I bet you would never wear out a RBI or Hegner or even a Excalibur . You keep playing in the mid range area when you clearly are a professional scroller and need a workhorse. You can probably fix those saws and that can become a hobby.1 point -

Will happen with painters tape too. I think I mentioned this one other thread some time ago. Also sometimes I find myself stacking weights on a piece to keep from warping before cutting and this adds to the problem.1 point -

I have had that problem with all of the adhesives I have used to attach the patterns. The shelf paper seems to remove easier after some time than the others I have used. I just removed some that had been on the wood for almost a month, and didn't have too much problem with it. However, I usually do try to get it off in a day or two at the most.1 point -
Music Notes
RabidAlien reacted to Canuck45 for a topic
I have a really "big scroll saw" No each the staff is made of individual 11" long pieces for each line of the staff. The notes are one piece cut with the exception of the triple note which I cut in 2 pieces and glued together. Thanks to all for the comments as it reinforces my desire to strive to become a good scroller.1 point -
