  1. I made these today at the request of my daughter. Many thanks to @bobscroll for the named ornament pattern, even more thanks to @rdatelle for letting me copy and put my own names on what was essentially a pattern made for him. The xmas trees I'm not sure where I found them, and the 'dog' one I made myself.

    Christmas Bell

My first hanging Christmas ornament. This is a FREE Sue Mey pattern that I have wanted to try for some time. I stack cut 2 out of scrap mahogany. Thought I would try some painting of one to see how it would look. It is about 6" x 6", and I reduced it to 75% of the original size. Still a little big for a tree ornament maybe, depending on the tree. My wife is going to hang it with her Christmas reef. It was a tedious cut at this size. Not sure I could accomplish it any smaller.

    Sometimes you say why

When I seen this pattern from Alexfox I said that looks fun. By the time I got all the pieces cut I was saying why lol. Wasn’t a hard project but I couldn’t find 4mm plywood that the pattern called for. So I got 5mm an run it through drum sander to take off 1mm. You have to be very close on your cutting for the pieces to fit snug.

    Hearing Protection

Les, back in the days when I was seriously competing in 3 gun military shooting, I had earplugs that were molded to my ear canals and then I used a good pair of muffs designed for indoor pistol shooting. The combination of the two worked very well. I had pretty good hearing until one night when my reserve outfit was out on maneuvers at Fort Irwin, Ca. We were supporting a tank outfit and it was after dark when they started firing. I was standing behind and to the rear of two M-48A1's and they fired simultaneously. The sky turned bright yellow. I couldn't hear for two days and I have tinnitus ever since. I sold tools in and around body shops for 40 years, I wore headphones to listen to the rock and roll music up close, I hung out at the drag strips when Art Arfons ran his jet dragster and then all the pistol shooting (500 rounds of .45acp) every Sunday for practice, I have done everything in the world to ruin my hearing. But, I still hear fairly well. Except for when my wife speaks to me. For some reason, I just can't hear her. LOL!

    My two foot Eiffel Tower

After six months of learning and practicing with my scroll saw, I decided to tackle a big project and a Chritmas gift for my wife. My concern was cutting straight lines. For my previous projects I milled my own wood to size. For this project I wanted to use 1/2" Cherry with a Maple base. Right off the bat I started dealing with cupping which made it a lot more difficult to cut. Lessons learned from that. My best decision was to try the Pegasus modified reverse tooth blade. I cut the entire project with the 0/2. They did a great job of tracking a straight line. Anyway I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

    Fretwork basket

This is a fretwork basket that I make, 1/4 cherry with bamboo toothpicks for the pins. My addition to the pattern was to extend the tenons and pin them with toothpicks (trimmed to length). There is no glue holding this together.

  10. Working on a pendant for a stocking stuffer for my wife. She has no interest in the Village so no worry about her seeing this. Gotta find a pretty way to mount it now. Here's a shot of Opal digging in the raised strawberry bed. She decided to remove the lattice under the steps yesterday. She's also pulled a bit of siding off my shop. Here's another shot of her looking all pretty and innocent.

I am fortunate to have a neighbor who has a business that builds exotic things for very high end houses. The make curved staircases, arches and other things. His dumpster is full of various hardwoods. He brought me an armload yesterday.

  12. Each year our club gets invited to a luncheon at our local cancer support centre - Hearth Place. We turn wig stands for cancer patients that go to those who need a wig as a result of their treatment. The wig stand is a nicer place to store the wig. (If anyone is a turner too and would like info on this let me know). Anyways, I thought I would take an ornament for each of the volunteers for the Look Good Feel Better program. I started with a couple of Steve Goods patterns (Peace theme) and started to look for some others and I found the Star and the Tree by Travis and the Candle by Wayne Mahler in the "Ornaments for Charity Book". Wish I would have looked there first as it would be just a little different take on the Ornaments for Charity. I have stacked cut 1/8 BB and sprayed with glitter. Approx 30 so far. Thanks to the pattern designers who contributed.

    F4U-1 Corsair

Back to doing Aircraft again (Lawson's taunt!) Always liked the Corsair. Aircraft went through lots of variations like regular canopy and bubble canopy and 3 and 4 bladed props. It was still being used by several countries into the early '50's. Cut on 1/8 BB with 1/4" backer. The design and lines are very thin and cowl flaps had me a little perplexed. It would have been tough to connect all the lines. Lettering went quick. Not sure what's next. They are predicting heavy snow in the upstate of SC this weekend so the car will go into the garage and I'll be out of the shop. Time to start hunting for some new patterns to cut.

  17. Biggest problem I have seen with drilling on a drill press is most people turn the drill press on and then proceed to punch the bit through the wood. The second biggest issue is using dull bits. So to drill properly and have nice clean holes the bit rotation should fast, the feed rate slow and use a backer board and a clean sharp bit.

  20. My wife's an my first dog, which I got for her at the pound for $1 and he came with 2 cans of dog food!!!! He was a mix cocker/poodle. Actually a great dog, but he was really into anything that resembled a ball. When we had our first Christmas tree with him, he could not be trusted to not go after the pretty balls hanging on the tree. One day the temptation over came him. He grabbed one of the ornaments and headed for the front door, it was open, but the glass storm door wasn't! He went right through the glass!! No one was hurt, well maybe his pride a little, and his bottom,,,,,,

  21. Looks pretty good, especially for your first attempt. I tend to use use smaller blades. They cut slower, but the cuts are smoother, resulting in less or no sanding. Sharp turns are less of a problem too. Compound cutting opens up a whole new world of scroll sawing. I have done very little flat work since first getting into compound cutting about 20 years ago. Be careful, it's a very slippery slope. Charley

So... Overall a simple project. Tools i used - scrollsaw, bandsaw, jigsaw, router, orbital sander, drill and mini grinder. Material - 10mm birch plywood, 3mm birch plywood, little bit a cord, led bulb and bulb socket. Lamp shade i did stack cutting. First try ever.... Somehow i broke the top of the shade. Birch plywood 3mm. The bottom part... Rough cutting on bandsaw, then i used router and little imperfections removed by mini grinder. Yes i did a stencil for router. Leg joints i did cut on bandsaw and suprisingli well.

    Pattern ??

Thanks for this Jerry, I need practice and I am not creative at all. And obviously looking at this effort - I need a lot more practice [smile] I doubt it is scroll sawable with the lettering so close together, even if you cut inside the red lines, but thanks again. Jim EDIT: So the first image is a png file cause that is all inksscape exports to when I click on it to show the pic here in the community forum, it displays a black background ???? I loaded the png into PS, and saved as a jpg, that should display correctly

I do get that somewhat, but it's always worse in my left ear. Goes from high pitched ring to what I describe as grasshoppers in a field on a hot day. Lately I've also periodically got the sound of tiny bubbles popping in my right ear. I've had several very loud jobs plus a lot of shooting shot guns in the past so I'm pretty sure what caused mine. So glad I kind of wore a mental callus to it. Mental anguish trumps physical ailments. Hate to complain when there's so many worse things people have to live with though.

  27. Recalls are typically for serious health or safety issues. So unless there are electrically issues that might cause a fire or electric shock I doubt we will ever see a scroll saw recall.

That is a nice batch. Isn't it great to get bunches of free lumber like that. I have a nephew who works at a local sawmill who just found out that I can use short 1' to 1.5' pieces so he is getting me the cut offs of the lumber after it has been dried and graded. I use the maple he gets me for all my ornaments.

  36. I wear these http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LWICGMY?tag=s4343sdfd-20 have for a long time and have a few pairs scattered around the shop and even outdoors when I cut the grass or my neighbor uses that annoying leaf blower. That person is very anal he needs to get every blade of grass or every leaf off the sidewalk. usually running for over an hour. 50 X100 lot. Really is annoying. I never wear anything with music because I feel it is a huge safety hazard. You are drowning one frequency out but blasting so many others into your ears. People just do not get it. But to each their own and then you read these posts. I can not do two things at once. Concentrate on machinery in the shop and listen to music. Just me I guess. Worked in construction for 43 years so there always was noise of all different types. Use to use the foam throw away plugs and they worked well. hearing is still good to this day. Eyes not so much. Knees and shoulder nope not good. Back lets not go there.

  37. I agree with the aggressive cutting. My friend Clay that has the PS Woods machines cuts like a house afire. Makes me dizzy. He scrolls at top speed. I don't know how he does it. He cuts a lot of thick pieces and uses only PS blades. I guess everyone has their own style of cutting as I do. SLOW.

    Drilling holes i Baltic Birch

The smaller the bit the faster the speed. Most big Drill presses do not spin fast enough. I Have a dedicated drill for the tiny holes from Micro Mark. and as the others have said you need a backer. Also nibble at it as you drill. Wow has the price gone up since I bought mine. https://www.micromark.com/MicroLux-3-Speed-Mini-Drill-Press The Dremel tool with drill press attachment and drill chuck would probably be a better choice. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Dremel-Rotary-Tool-WorkStation-for-Woodworking-and-Jewelry-Making-220-01/202263196?cm_mmc=Shopping|G|VF|D25T|25-9_PORTABLE+POWER|DREMEL|NA|Versa|LIA|71700000044136618|58700004605584227|92700039522038325&gclid=Cj0KCQiA6dLgBRDoARIsAJgoM4u38ZxQ7mLDdGrw5x3qFt8GE_-bkS7k9onoDLi8PsPoQbaqumX4TnsaAn3hEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

  43. Thanks Roly, I'm not sure what that would be in dollars but I'll find out. Well, I found out. I wouldn't do it for that. Way too much work to make that little. Definitely a labor of love I guess. For a hardwood basket, I'd have to have $75 minimum. Depending on wood selection, probably more like $100. Oh well, I never figured I was in it for the money.

  44. I find that speed also has an effect, small bits need a higher speed to clear the chips.
