    It is Well . . .

Soon as I saw Kirk's aka Rabid Alien I had to cut it. I had the pattern printed in red for these tired old eyes. I used 1/2" Cedar cutting it with a #3 Pegas MG blade. Now that it is cut I don't know what to do with it. I'll glue it to a backer but have no idea how to make a frame. I'm thinking of just getting some door trim and staining it. Hopefully I can make an adequate miter cut.

  2. When I saw this pattern posted, I reacted to it with, "I guess I will have to get on this one fast" and Sam replied that he would be waiting to see it cut. So I got it cut and finished last night. My wife really liked it and so did I Dick heppnerguy

    Dog portrait

Finished up this little guy the other day. I posted a request for a pattern of my boss’ dog and was lucky enough a nice person was able to make a pattern for me. I’m new to scrolling and hope to one day repay the favor to someone else. The frame was custom made by me as well. Thanks for looking.

    Last Ornaments

I'm guessing these are the last three ornaments for the year. The name ornament is one my wife saw online made from metal and wanted me to try and duplicate. Not as hard to cut as it is to remove pattern and then sand, very delicate pieces hanging in there. I don't mind being fussy cutting without breaking, but then breaking trying to remove pattern or sand.

    Avenger TBM

Watching Bush 41's funeral inspired me to design and cut his Grumman Avenger TBM. Lots of very fine lines and rather than trying to recreate the prop blades, I had to make a ellipse sweep of the blade arc. The canopy was tough with all the intersecting frames. I did have to deviate from my original pattern in some areas to create more bridges. Lots of blue tape to hold it all together. 1/8" BBPW on 1/4" backer. Shellac/lacquer finish. Time to put the airplanes in the hangar for a while.

  10. Just put this one together......pleased the way it turned out....its 24"T x 23"W.....this is for a good friend of mine opening his new barber shop Jan. 2nd........he had to do a career change after suffering a heart attack in 2017....I wish him great success & I hope this sign welcomes his guests.....has the local HS logo & colors (Red & Black....Fulton Steamers)......the white crackle paint has a yellowish tint to it to make it look more aged I think......comments appreciated as always....ty & Merry Christmas!

  11. Just placed my order for a BM-226 with all the options.. fully loaded.. even has air conditioning.. probably should have ordered heater instead .. shop's pretty frosty right now at 34F.. .. After the new year.. I'll be having some saws for sale.. gotta thin out the scroll saw herd.. Will be selling a DW-788.. possibly a lightly used EX-21 with pegas upgraded clamps.. maybe.. big maybe.. the old Hawk 220VS.... Definitely keeping my Hawk 226 Ultra.. If anyone here might have any interest you might wanna let me know.. But.. before I sell any of these.. I'll be waiting to make sure the new Hawk is here and set up and tuned.. and running good.. Will also be selling some sanders and many other tools I just don't use.. I would keep them all but really have only been able to run two scroll saws at a time and the others get mad because I'm not using them... and I need to make room for the CNC router and the laser machine I just bought.. as they'll require a large portion of my woodworking shop.. I'll have a whole lot of new toys to play with in the new year.. The CNC was back ordered and may be Feb or so before I get it.. but the laser is supposed to ship on the 3rd.. Just ordered the Hawk this morning so have no idea on that yet..

  14. I was doing some router work, started smelling electrical insulation, finished and took a look. The cord is shot, bare wires, all three colors. So I take it off the table and start taking it apart thinking to replace the power cord. I can not get it apart!! Craftsman power unit, Model 315-25050 made in 1956 according to the data plate. I like the table mounted router unit, but looking around Amazon I see a couple that look like you can move the motor to the table or use as a hand held. like: https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-Combination-Horsepower-Variable-1617EVSPK/dp/B00005RHPD?ref_=Oct_BSellerC_552866_0&pf_rd_p=97c8d7ae-9852-5fc1-a63e-d697a050b7a1&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=552866&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=7NB35F2VH5A016QW9B50&pf_rd_r=7NB35F2VH5A016QW9B50&pf_rd_p=97c8d7ae-9852-5fc1-a63e-d697a050b7a1 or https://www.amazon.com/Makita-RT0701CX7-1-1-Compact-Router/dp/B00HAQMHEO?ref_=Oct_BSellerC_552866_2&pf_rd_p=97c8d7ae-9852-5fc1-a63e-d697a050b7a1&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-6&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=552866&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=7NB35F2VH5A016QW9B50&pf_rd_r=7NB35F2VH5A016QW9B50&pf_rd_p=97c8d7ae-9852-5fc1-a63e-d697a050b7a1 BUT I am not stuck on that flexibility either, never had it up to now. Recommendations? Light to moderate use I guess, kind of hard to quantify that kind of thing Jim

  17. Very nice. Do give us an honest report after you set up and run for awhile. I too need to unload my Dewalt and Hegner. I do not use them hardly any more. I also have a full size shaper I need to take apart and get out of the shop. That thing is a beast that I used only a few times. They make routers and router tables that can do just the same jobs. My furniture making days are well behind me. Have a few other things I need to sell. Just curious though why an upgraded Hawk?? You have 2 already. What more could you want from them?? I thought the Hawk was not aggressive enough for you. That saw will not do any more than what the 226 does now. If you get into playing around with moving the blade holder front and back, let us know how that goes. If you are buying for top feeding there are better options. Should be an interesting report being you have both versions and scrolled on both.

  19. There really is no need to wonder John because it is the engineers and the bean counters. There must be some Dewalt owners that feel a lift arm is useful otherwise there wouldn't be models on the market like the Jim Dandy lifter. Just like I have stated in other posts once a scroll saw is on the market the manufacturers just can't seem to admit any issue and then there are the beans counters. Oh and by the way I have never test drove a Hawk but they would probably be my choice for a new saw.

  20. Steve Good mentioned that HD had 2x2" clear pine. I bought a length and it is exactly 3/4X3/4. Eight footer was about $12 with tax. So this is my first try with a Steve Good pattern. Started with an Olson #5 skip tooth but switched to a #7 Pegas MG. Still needs some sanding and de-burring.

    BOWLS

I have made three of the same beginner bowls from Carol's book. Didn't get the drill points sanded out completely, but they are for my own use, so I wasn't to worried. Used a spindle sander and my belt sander on them. I did buy a rounded sanding attachment for the drill press, but wasn't very impressed with it. I think that is more user error than anything!! I have decided that I just don't like cutting bowls lol. However, never say never. Might go back and try some more. I do love the look of them!!!

    Little Christmas project

I used a pattern I'd gotten from Scroller Limited years ago. It was supposed to be mounted on rough cut wood, I had made some of projects of this type before and the rough wood is a dust magnet. I used 1/4" plywood for the background and used stencils to spray the snow and sky along with the clouds. The Santa and other things in the picture are cut from 1/8"BB plywood. I used diluted acrylic paint to stain the various parts of the picture. The frames are made from 1x2 pine, I cut a rabbit in the back for the plywood and a 1/8" groove to put glass in the front of the frame to keep dust out.

  26. Oh I agree you are buying a quality saw and reputation of them does precede them. Can you get a lemon, well sure that is anything that has mechanical movement. The other thing is the size you chose. You have a 226 and now you have 2. I bought the first Hawk as a 226 but bought the 220 because most my cutting is not needed for the larger saw. If I occasionally do I still have the 226. What I found is the 220 more compact and less noisy. I understand your thinking and wish you good luck. Happy sawing.

  27. I went with the Hawk because it is the best made tool I have seen.. with the features and goodies offered in the price range of high end saws.. I don't like the smaller table of the Hegner.. DeWalts last about a week.. and Excaliburs are really no differently made ( mechanical wise ) than a DeWalt.. so I see no real advantage to keeping it around... some may be offended because they love their Excalibur and DeWalts.. I like using them.. but longevity just isn't there for a production type setting.. I do think Hengers are great saws.. looked at a few.. parts aren't cheap.. it would mean learning the in's and outs of using it... all over again.. took me a good amount of time.. fussing with blade configurations etc to get to a point where I actually like using the Hawks not really wanting to do that again with Hegner.. In part also my reason for going with a brand new one is that it has the variable blade adjustment.. my 226 Ultra only has the two position blade holder and the aggressive position is too much.. and the less aggressive not enough.. these two positions the way the saw is designed is quite a big blade movement from the one slot to the next.. I feel if one could be set in the middle of these two position the saw would be perfect.. The older 220 with the round clamps.. cuts almost perfect for my style cutting... but is well worn and needs plenty of repairs to be a production worker saw.. With the new saw this is variable so I should be able to get it dialed in to where I like.. even though I've kind of grown use to the slower pace cutting and being able to maneuver the tight corners better..... The 226 Ultra is making some squeaking noises from the motor area.. the old 220 needs the arms machined and new wedges.. I intend to fix whatever is going on with the 226 Ultra and maybe later on I'll send the arms in for the 220.. meanwhile.. I want to have a dependable saw so my reason for going with a new one.. work on the issues with the older ones.. sell off the others.. I'm a bottom feeder so that wasn't the issue.. just more about buying a quality saw that'll be dependable for a couple years hopefully without having to do anything to it.. The 226 Ultra was brand new when I bought it two years ago.. but I've found that from sitting for 20 years the grease in the bearings had dried up and got hard.. I've had to replace about every bearing in the thing.. but did't do the big bearing in that block on the end of the motor or the one just inside the motor... I'm thinking this is where the squeaking is coming from.. saw still works flawlessly but stopped using it before I damage the motor or something else..

    Which saw to buy?

Thanks Randy, yes I did mean adjustable front back blade motion. I will edit my post. I was not aware of that capability on the Hegner. Kevin I just looked up what I paid for my G4 April 2005 $1214.00 that was with shipping. It has paid for almost all of the tools in my shop since then. Certainly one of the best tool investments I have ever made, definitely the most fun.

    BOWLS

I've made several of the bowls from Carole Rothman's book. In fact, I just finished 6 footed candy dishes, from her Wooden Bowls book, to give as Christmas presents. I use every sander at my disposal. My main sanding tool is a Rigid oscillating spindle/belt sander. I also use a drum sander mounted in my drill press as well as the sanding attachment on an oscillating multi-tool. After that, a lot of hand sanding. I love Carole's designs. She is indeed the master and her videos are well worth watching, if you are considering making any of these bowls. To go along with her considerable talent and creativity, she is also an excellent teacher. The one draw back to Carole's designs, in my humble opinion , is that they require so much sanding. Her more innovative and complex bowl shapes really require something akin to the specialized sanding system she uses in her shop to accomplish the shaping in any sort of efficient manner. I've not tried some of them because of that reason. The belt, spindle and drum sanders I own are better suited for sanding on a flat plane. Sanding complex contours with them, doesn't work very well. I've actually considered getting a Guinevere sanding system in order to facilitate making some of the more creative bowls in Carole's book, but have not yet done so. Do not be deterred though. She has several designs that can be effectively sanded with more common workshop tools, so I encourage you to give it a try. Good luck and have fun making sawdust!

  41. Now that I've got a couple projects under my belt with the DeWalt and this lifter I can report it a success and recommend the design. Using it has become automatic. Though I've not used any other design I can't imagine anything working better. Tom

    BOWLS

I made over 15 bowls with the scroll saw, I used all kind of woods, cherry, walnut, oak, maple and even Purple Heart. As far as sanders I used all kinds, round pneumatic to shape the inside also belt sander for outside and small discs sanders. You should get a book from Carole Rothman she is the expert on bowls making on a scroll saw.

    I forgot about this

thanks to a post I saw today, I remembered that I too had made this Steve Good pattern for my daughter in Heppner, several years ago and while we were at her house for Thanksgiving, she told me that here Indian Warrior piece had broken and she would like me to make her a replacement, so I did, and here it is. I added a backer board to give it more support, so it should not break again. I sure was glad that 'toothpick' posted a photo of the one he made; It rattled my brain and helped my remember the one I owed my daughter. So I downloaded the pattern and went to me shop and cut it, a couple of hours ago. Ready to mail, tomorrow Dick\ heppnerguy
