    Gma's Craft Room

I'm putting this post in Bragging Rights though I'm certainly not bragging. I'm not happy with it for a number of reasons. One the bright side I learned from each of my errors and my DW likes it. First off it was a difficult cut with the wood so hard. It had 110 years to harden before I repurposed this old Singer Sewing Machine cabinet. There are a few really well cut lines. Otherwise it is comprised of curves with flats or with curved straight lines. Seems like everything I tried to salvage the project and make the letters "pop" didn't work and I had a better idea after I had burned a bridge. The bright white background did help with the letters and features a bit but only if looking straight on from a distance. The photo was taken fairly close and shows how the letters fade away with anything but straight on. I may try to hand paint the inside of the letters white. Would have been easy to spray before I glued the backer on. Could also have made the backer 8 x 10 and put in a frame. Lots of Oh Duh moments and lots to learn. Thank you to those who helped me with my printing problems early on and to those making suggestions on finishing. Tom

    Merry Christmas, SSV!

Hi everybody. I just wanted to wish you a very Merry Christmas. Thank you for being a part of Scroll Saw Village. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I'm continually amazed at what you folks come up with. It is truly inspiring. I hope 2019 brings you happiness and everything you hoped for...and maybe a little extra shop time, too. Happy Holidays, everybody.

    New saw

I received my new Dewalt about a 3 weeks ago and finally set it up today. The wife told me to open it several days ago, figured that I would wait until Christmas. My daughter got me a lighted magnifier for Christmas, so I set them both up this morning. Out of the box set up was fairly simple but trying to get the blade in brought out some cuss words and some bloody knuckles. Not sure what part of the saw cut my knuckle, Saw 1 Me 0. Finally got the blade in both the top and bottom and not to be beat by the saw, took it back out to see if I could do it again. LOL I was planning on trying to remove the blade from the bottom on this saw as apposed to removing the top of the blade like I have done on my Porter Cable. But I will have to get used to it more before going that route. For now I will stick with removing the top of the blade for interior cuts. I looked around for something to cut out for my first cut and saw some Christmas gift tag pattern laying on the bench. Saw is pretty smooth until about 80%. I was cutting some 3/8" cedar with a #2 Olsen reverse cut so I had the speed around 1/2 maybe. Cut pretty good I thought. Here is a pic of the new set up.

    It is Well . . .

Soon as I saw Kirk's aka Rabid Alien I had to cut it. I had the pattern printed in red for these tired old eyes. I used 1/2" Cedar cutting it with a #3 Pegas MG blade. Now that it is cut I don't know what to do with it. I'll glue it to a backer but have no idea how to make a frame. I'm thinking of just getting some door trim and staining it. Hopefully I can make an adequate miter cut.

  12. Well, the wife was out of town visiting a friend, and took the offspring with her to visit Grandma...so someone had to valiantly stay behind and make sure the dogs didn't get up to any shenanigans. And keep the saw from getting lonely. Finished up a Steve Good pattern (at least, I think its one of his) for my wife, not sure where we're going to stash it Tried an idea I had for some scrap 2x4's I picked up at Lowes (yay free scrap wood!!!). Trimmed off the rounded edge of one side, to give myself a smooth, flat face to work with, then set my table saw fence for 1.5" and was rewarded with two 1.5"x1.5" lengths. Perfect for compound cuts...such as the 3D chess set pattern I just bought from Sue Mey's site. Just wish she'd included a separate page of nothing but pawn patterns. Finally, a nifty little cutting (if I do say so myself) of a pattern I did the other day, because truly, Mondays suck. My wife may have squee'd a bit, she likes the little grumpy guy. We're off to grab dinner, I'll finish cleaning up the feathers and staining it later tonight, maybe tomorrow morning before yet another long drive to visit family 4 hours away so that nobody's feelings get hurt....yay. Seasons greetings and all that humbug.

    New saw

The factory stand and light came with the saw from Grizzly, I just don't have room for the stand. I have the saw clamped down with 3 clamps, it should be just as sturdy the way I have it as it would be with the stand. I have had that 3 sided Craftsman table for prob 25 years. I do like it,, I only have tools mounted on 2 sides so that I can use the 3rd side for a worktop. Only bad thing about it is that if you are working on something you have to clear it off the table before you can spin it to another tool.

    Last Ornaments

I'm guessing these are the last three ornaments for the year. The name ornament is one my wife saw online made from metal and wanted me to try and duplicate. Not as hard to cut as it is to remove pattern and then sand, very delicate pieces hanging in there. I don't mind being fussy cutting without breaking, but then breaking trying to remove pattern or sand.

  22. I finished the Christmas Bells that I am going to go hang on the door knobs some of my family members. The bottom two are Mahogany and the top three are BB, two sprayed with gold color paint and backed with felt. The other stained and painted. These were really fun. I will hopefully get started earlier next year and give to more people.

    Chistmas Gifts

A few Christmas gifts for family and friends made up from left over wood from my intarsia projects over the past couple of years. Amazing how one can loose the knack for word art and fret work. Patterns are basically Steve Goods but with modifications to all with Inkscape. Actually that was a good in understanding Inkscape better.

    Avenger TBM

Watching Bush 41's funeral inspired me to design and cut his Grumman Avenger TBM. Lots of very fine lines and rather than trying to recreate the prop blades, I had to make a ellipse sweep of the blade arc. The canopy was tough with all the intersecting frames. I did have to deviate from my original pattern in some areas to create more bridges. Lots of blue tape to hold it all together. 1/8" BBPW on 1/4" backer. Shellac/lacquer finish. Time to put the airplanes in the hangar for a while.

    Little Christmas project

I used a pattern I'd gotten from Scroller Limited years ago. It was supposed to be mounted on rough cut wood, I had made some of projects of this type before and the rough wood is a dust magnet. I used 1/4" plywood for the background and used stencils to spray the snow and sky along with the clouds. The Santa and other things in the picture are cut from 1/8"BB plywood. I used diluted acrylic paint to stain the various parts of the picture. The frames are made from 1x2 pine, I cut a rabbit in the back for the plywood and a 1/8" groove to put glass in the front of the frame to keep dust out.

    My two foot Eiffel Tower

After six months of learning and practicing with my scroll saw, I decided to tackle a big project and a Chritmas gift for my wife. My concern was cutting straight lines. For my previous projects I milled my own wood to size. For this project I wanted to use 1/2" Cherry with a Maple base. Right off the bat I started dealing with cupping which made it a lot more difficult to cut. Lessons learned from that. My best decision was to try the Pegasus modified reverse tooth blade. I cut the entire project with the 0/2. They did a great job of tracking a straight line. Anyway I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

    Sometimes you say why

When I seen this pattern from Alexfox I said that looks fun. By the time I got all the pieces cut I was saying why lol. Wasn’t a hard project but I couldn’t find 4mm plywood that the pattern called for. So I got 5mm an run it through drum sander to take off 1mm. You have to be very close on your cutting for the pieces to fit snug.

    Past projects

So being new to SSV, I haven't had much chance to post my "brags" in the Bragging Rights folder. I thought that I would post a few pics of some of my past scroll saw projects. Most of them, if not all them are Steve Good designs. Made this recently for a friend's Dad. Been a Cubs fan since I can remember, I had no choice but to make this. Made this rose for my Wife Navy Plaque for my buddy's birthday

    2019 Stretching

I've got a new pyrography machine and I'd like to be able to do 'nice' pieces for myself and friends, so I intend practicing lots over the holidays. Although perhaps this forum, being dedicated to 'woodwork' and 'making' things isn't the place to be with this hobby I may have to look see if there's a 'friendly' forum for 'burning' although I can't see that anywhere is going to be as good as this place

    F4U-1 Corsair

Back to doing Aircraft again (Lawson's taunt!) Always liked the Corsair. Aircraft went through lots of variations like regular canopy and bubble canopy and 3 and 4 bladed props. It was still being used by several countries into the early '50's. Cut on 1/8 BB with 1/4" backer. The design and lines are very thin and cowl flaps had me a little perplexed. It would have been tough to connect all the lines. Lettering went quick. Not sure what's next. They are predicting heavy snow in the upstate of SC this weekend so the car will go into the garage and I'll be out of the shop. Time to start hunting for some new patterns to cut.
