Funny thing just happened... was getting a package delivered to my doorstep and as the dogs were barking I went over to calm them down and say hello to the postman. He says to me through the door "I'd like to pick your brain some time." I step outside and he says he just got a scroll saw and is figuring out what he wants to make with it. He had seen the various catalogs I receive and of course envelopes on a regular basis from Harvey "Byler Scroll Saw". I asked him if he had a minute right now and invited him into my shop and showed him my puzzle factory. I suggested he visit Wooden Teddy Bear and check out the millions of patterns and ideas out there and told him to email me and I'd point him to other information and ideas (Steve Good for instance). And we thought Facebook knew everything about us... the postal carriers were way ahead of FB on gathering information. LOL He's a total newbie so I'll enjoy answering his questions and helping him out any way that I can.6 points

I think my Hawk is wore out
stoney and 3 others reacted to Oldmansbike for a topic
The only maintenance I have done to it over the years was couple drops of oil on the bearings whenever I would think of it and keeping the sawdust cleaned off of it. That was all RBI recommend in the manual.4 points -

i had a woman contact me for a gift for her son. he is a fan of the game Fallout. thankfully she sent a few pics cause i would not have known what i was looking for. one had a flag as a background so my pattern included a flag but i didn't like how it looked when i was done. so i cut the guy out, ditched the rest , and made a background with stuff my crafty wife bought the day before.3 points

I think my Hawk is wore out
stoney and 2 others reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Mine is the year they went to the square blade holders so probably around the same year. Never did any maintenance on them and they run like a clock. Can not say enough good things about those saws. If you find one in that range Ray and is a decent price give it a try. As with all saws they may need some getting use to but nothing drastic. Outside of the tension lever, blade clamps, and those silly plastic blade holders that I made a spring steel one for replacement, nothing has been replaced and many many many hours are on them and more to come.3 points -
Interesting find.. 1996 and never been apart.. probably never had any other maintenance done? short of a couple drops of oil on the wedge? Glad you was able to get it figured out..3 points

I think my Hawk is wore out
stoney and 2 others reacted to Oldmansbike for a topic
I took it apart today and here's what I found. The bearings on both arms turned but not like they should. They were very dry feeling. I sprayed them with silicone spray and that did a world of good. They were still tight so I reused them. I put some grease in them before I put the saw back together. I also discovered that the saw was not assembled right from the factory. The round thing in the bottom arm that the tension rod goes through was not in its hole in the arm. I put it in the hole when I reassembled the saw. There was very little wear in the v on the arm where the wedge sits. After I got it together I turned it on and was surprised that the vibration was almost gone. Still have some in the upper range but I never cut there anyway. I ordered a new spring from Bushton and should be good to go after its installed. Thanks for your help.3 points -

Before you rip out and replace bearings you can try some bearing lubricant spray. I am not sure if they even make this any more but I use Sandaro bearing lubricant and have for years mainly on my router bit bearings and it is good stuff. Can't hurt to try something. Not WD40 stay far away from that stuff around bearings. I guess Bostic bought them out or something but it is the same can so not sure what happened. http://www.wurthlac.com/storefront/adhesives-lubricants/lubricants/bearing-lubricant-5-oz-/prodSDBL5.html3 points -

Bear Woods Blades Delivered And....

Kevin I just ordered some #3 and #5 Pegas MG blades from Lesley's Patterns LTD. $36.00 a gross. They shipped quickly but because of the Holiday I have not received them yet I will let you know how they turn out as soon as I receive them. To bad you are having problems. I ordered a couple gross FD blades from WTB a couple weeks ago, they would not cut worth a darn. Called WTB up and they contacted the factory and sure enough they had a problem. WTB replaced them very quickly. Pegas is not the only ones with issues. grizz2 points -
i ordered my saw bird blades, they shipped the next day and they took 13 days to arrive. maybe it is customs that slows the processes. i love the saw bird spirals... so in the words of Viktor "the goat" Navorski, "I Wait"... lol2 points

I agree on the communication part. I would rather be told that it will be three weeks and get it one than be told it will be three days and it ends up three weeks. I ordered a Kreg fence for my band saw, didn't like the old one. I placed the order on the 27th, I installed it yesterday. This instant gratification is dangerous.2 points

I would often see out postie sitting near our mail box reading the front and back covers of our magazines and catalogues that we got delivered. He's retired now and I do miss him. Did you point your postie in the direction of the Village??????????????????????????? Marg2 points

The more I hear you guys all praising the Hawk, the more it makes me want one. I'm going to scour the c/l ads until I find a good deal on one. I realize that there have been motor problems over the years and each time I have sent the serial number to Bushton they have answered back quickly to inform me whether or not it was one to watch out for. I kind of know which ones to watch for and the blade mechanism to get. I really don't want to buy an old saw and have to update it.2 points

But what Jim? I've ordered from them and the service was spectacular. I ordered one of their scrap/cutoff boxes. I asked nicely if they would tag the wood so I could identify what they sent. Each piece had a nice tag on it and the wood was all nice, clean and very useable. I like Ocooch.2 points

Gifting 'Letter Openers'...
heppnerguy and one other reacted to orangeman for a topic
weapons of mass destruction - should be outlawed; I'm calling my sheriff tomorrow. Everyone needs to turn in their letter openers along with their nail clippers! we used to get handwritten thank you notes from grandchildren when they received gifts from us several years ago. Now we get text messages - if we are lucky! I am proposing a national handwritten "send a letter day" - to anyone of your choice. The USPS could promote it as a way to stay connected the REAL way. And it would help with their budget too! And a new stamp design. And teach cursive too. I think it was Jerry who sent the cartoon: How can you write your name when peeing in the snow if you don't know cursive. But I digress. Cheers and Happy New Year to all. bb2 points -
That's great news.. I always like to see new scroll sawers in the community... My neighbor also just got a scroll saw and so I gave him samples of about every blade I have.. even ones I don't like.. never know he may love them, LOL He has been a woodworker for years.. and now has picked p interest in the stuff I do.. he's always coming over to check out what I'm working on.. or to buy some clocks from me... he has become a clock maker this fall..2 points

Bear Woods Blade Order
SCROLLSAW703 and one other reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
Yeah most my car patterns are already on the larger side for a desk clock.. making it bigger would also make it longer.. most are already 12-13 inch with the 1-7/16 inch clock... I just don't see it working on many of my designs.. Yeah the whole group of patterns I have from the Berry Basket etc would probably work.. but then.. those clocks aren't really my hot sellers anyway.. Maybe because the clock is too small..2 points -

SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Fish for a topic
I ordered my FD blades from the Hawk scroll saw website. They have the same blades and they are cheaper, and from the U.S. I had a problem with the web page so I called directly and ordered, the lady I spoke with was very nice and it didn't take very long to get them, maybe a week I forget. I need more blades now and am going back to Hawk.1 point -

Canadian are having a postal dispute right now, rotating strike, slow work so that will be a factor. I found that Bear woods is also very slow in Canada and communication is not the best. I ordered my blades from Mikes, D&D and Sawbird (Canadian) all 3 provide excellent service.1 point -

Nothing to agree or disagree about. I am very conservative on what I can spend. I would pay for the wood that I could build a clock with, something that can be passed on to family, but something like these 3D patterns, would be fun to do, but not a priority to me. I posted the link because I know there are those that would enjoy doing them and I enjoy seeing them when the post pictures. I certainly look forward to seeing the one you want to do.1 point

I do a couple of shows each year so have made a lot of stuff. But this is what we do for family and close friends. We send special cards with a sentiment written by my wife. I print them on Photo frame cards. I cut 37 ornaments 1.5mm Finish plywood. Stack cut. Then mounted with removable sticky dots on the card. We have been doing this since 2005. It is one of those ideas that has gotten out of control but we love it. Unfortunately I have no pictures of the bigger items I made for sale such as a modified version of this Intarsia nativity the picture is last years.1 point

Been wanting to cut a Nativity for quite some time. Finally got some time in my shop to get it done. This is Steve Good's pattern and made from some alder that @heppnerguy gave me. My wife and her friends really like a video game called Midnight Cinderella. I made some custom ornaments with some of the characters. The are thrilled with them. Here's a detail shot. Cut from 1/4" BB ply. The image is just printed onto copy paper. I also put some Christmas scrapbook paper on the reverse before cutting them out.1 point
