  1. Last night I did a talk on enhancing your work with Flocking and Clay inlays at our club. I thought I would post the pictures on some of the works that I presented. It is hard to see the flocking but all the boxes flocked. I had a couple of turned items that were either flocked or had an inlay too. I think it was well received as there was lots of discussion on both topics.

    Thank you Mahendra

Here she is. I made a walnut frame for it. I show the back so you can see the keyhole bit hanger. It will sit flush against the wall.

    Gone to the Birds

Got this cut between Christmas & New Years. Finished it on the weekend. Question for anyone who has done this - how did you actually do the support?? I know I didn't do what the directions suggested - it didn't make sense to me, so I went my own way on it.

    Memorial Plaque

This is a Sue Mey pattern made with ash using a colored paper glued onto a piece of plywood. Karen was the high school secretary and played piano for the church. Odd thing I knowed her for 20 years but didn’t know our birthdays was one day apart (mine on 5/24/50 hers 5/25/50. Odder yet we both was born at the same hospital together. Was probably next to each other in the nursery. So you see why I had to make it! Giving it to her sister.

    Pattern by Grampa

My first piece of 2019 is this cutting from a pattern by @grampa. I took this photo over a year ago and tried to make my own pattern but failed miserably. Eventually I posted a request in the pattern request section and Paul responded almost immediately with this superb pattern. I can't thank him and the other pattern designers enough for the selfless work they do for others, it is much appreciated. Thanks for looking, Rob

  7. When I saw this pattern posted this week on Steve Good's sight, I showed it to my wife who immediately fell in love with it. So today I cut and finished it. It is not a very useful basket as it is quite small, but it is quite decorative and pleasing to the eye. I am considering cutting one more of them but instead of using 1/4 inch BB Ply I was thinking of using a thicker and darker wood to see how that comes out. I have to say that is took me longer to cut it then I thought it would but I am pleased with the outcome. Dick heppnerguy

  8. Last week I did the final cutting on one of the biggest scrolling project I have undertook. I still have the sanding, mounting and finish to do on that project, but I needed a break from it. At about the same time I read @Foxfold's post of a compound cutting video. I started watching it and decided to go check out the guy's site. ( JEPlans.com ). Compound cutting fascinates me because I am always surprised how you cut the pattern, take the block of wood apart and here is a neat little whatever it is you were hoping you would have. I look around the site and find a pattern for a pretty simple, but cute nutcracker, like for the ballet. When my daughter was little she danced in it a few years as she progressed through ballet classes. It was always fun to go watch her and all the little ballerinas. So I thought it would be fun to make for her and bring back some memories for her. This was really fun for me to make. All pieces are compound cut. His plans are very well done and he has a Youtube video on making this project. The plan give you a choice of 2 sizes to make. This is the bigger one, stands 7" tall. The plan was $3. So here he is in all his glory. Sorry I am not much of a painter, and boy I did not realize how shaky I am. I would like to do another some day, a little more detailed and bigger. The hair was the hardest part to cut, I could not believe it came out of that little block of wood when I was done.

    By George, take 2

I just finished these for a friend that is making a coffee table for his wife as a surprise. The “legs” will be wide boards on each end and he is going to frame these in with backboards. I had also made an OM symbol last week with African Paduck inlay and he wants that to inbed into the table top. The inlay came out pretty good, but finish sanding it was a messy job because the redness of the Paduck would bleed into the BB. Thank you Fish for the George Harrison pattern.

    Faith

This has been our saddest Xmas ever,my granddaughter Faith was born on the 19th Dec but due to many complications the life support was turned off on boxing day & the poor little thing passed away next day. It has made me think of others who might not have enjoyed a perfect Xmas, I made this Plaque for her parents which I think says it all.Peter

  14. I was going for a funny conversation piece with this one. If you are not familiar, that character is from a TV show called Bob's Burgers. It is supposed to look like she is going to clobber whoever is looking in the mirror. I did not use any stains, I cut the mirror to size in my shop. Here are some pics and the build album. http://imgur.com/a/aKuJ5xb

  31. My wife saw this in one of my pattern books and said she would love to have one. So you all know what that means. I know I bugged a few of you about helping me with patterns for this one and I thank you for all your help. Also to those who "schooled" me on wood types and so on. You folks here on SSV have been so kind and helpful. I'm so glad I found this site. Here are a couple of pics. One was taken without flash and the one that shows up more red was with flash. I like it the best but my wife says she likes the one that isn't so red. So, I guess I got lucky. By the way, she is going to put a glass votive candle cup in it with one of those flickering battery powered candles. It should look nice. I think anyway.

  32. Mahendra was kind enough to create this pattern of my son-in-law's parents. His mother passed away several months ago. Cut two up from 1/8" BB. Finished with 50/50 BLO. I experimented with several blades. What worked the best was a #1 Olson blade. With a fresh blade which was fairly aggressive I cut bold areas first. When the blade started to wear out I cut the detail areas like the eyes. It cut less aggressively but had good control.

    My first portrait

It’s a simple one. I call it electric Heisenberg. The lesson I learned is to not use 1/4” stock. It limits the viewing angle a lot.

  37. No. At least not the way I do it. The extra pieces are a very loose fit. I made this out of the extra pieces on the Spider-Man coaster which I’ll probably give to my Grandson who has a Super Hero room. The spider is not snug at all, just glued in place.

  38. Yeah, that sounds like a ripoff. 320 for a motor and some tweaking? 550 Canadian for a new saw? There has to be another way. Can't you just buy a motor for these saws?

  39. Thanks! Yes, it's all inlay. Can't be that difficult if I did it!

  41. For me I do stuff a bit different. This piece I would cut the pieces separately from some scrap and glue them onto the backer board. This way, if you screw some up, you have not ruined the entire piece. Once done it gives a different 3 d effect.

  42. Thanks to everyone that had tried to help out in searching for the pattern.. I searched for it for quite some time but I really didn't know what category to look under... while I guess pool is considered a sport.. for some reason I just didn't think to look there.. I think of sports as football, baseball, hockey etc etc .. and would have never thought to look there... I see there are actually a lot of clock patterns mixed throughout the site.. but searching for clock patterns you basically have to search every category to find them all... sort of the same thing with ornaments.. as there are religious themed ornaments.. and also wildlife, word art and other themed ornaments.. so basically you just have to search out throughout the whole library to find something.. I typically save all patterns to my computer and back them up several times... If I cut a pattern they go into a special file location for ones I have cut.. this way if I've cut it.. I have the pattern.. but telling people where they can get the pattern is a tough one because I've grabbed patterns for 14 years from various sites.. many of which no longer exist.. Big reason I rarely post things I've made in the past.. and only show things I just made because I know where I got the design from if I just made it, LOL.. Anyway, Thank you all again for your efforts in helping find this design..

    Buying a new saw

I should not give you my advice but here goes. I have never had any of the saws you mentioned. What I have is a 220vs Ultra Hawk purchased used for $200. It need a new controller for $150. I was aware of this when I bought it as the owner handed me the old controller. I now have a most formidable saw for under $400. Used Hawks come up frequently on craigs list at often attractive prices. JMHO

    ergonomics

I'm like a vulture hanging above his next meal. Wrists on table, elbows hanging loose and prefer using just my reader glasses versus the light magnifier which is pushed to the side for the light only unless I really want to see something close. Good posture is definitely not my forte! Of course with being so close, large patterns run into my overstuffed belly and I have to roll the chair back a little.

    ergonomics

I think mine are slightly below, unless I am cutting something real fragile and get tense. Then I think my shoulders are up over my ears and my elbow are as high as my shoulders should normally be!!
