New Saw Cuts
frankorona and 4 others reacted to lawson56 for a topic
Well as promised here are my first cuts with my New Delta.Boy Oh Boy is it a Joy to cut with.I managed to cut all three with one blade,One of the 2 that came with it.I,m gonna have to look in the box and see if I can find the bag they came in,to find out what kind of blades they are.I know there not skip tooth, The Owners Manual doesn't say. The middle Plaque I made foe a friend of mine. 1st one, well I,m a Trekkie, The Bandit is one of my own..Love my new saw.5 points -
On EX/King style stands, that bar on the Stand is in the way of my legs. I would also like to see them ditch the dust collection mechanism, and re-design something better. All the manufacturers should shift to Pegas clamps standard. Ex needs a coating on the table that don't come off so easily. On the Hegner, would like to see a "good" top feed option with a quick Clamp type solution for the bottom,5 points

Well I took a little break from the shop after the busy holidays... but got back at it last week making ornaments to restock some sold out ones.. Will be doing a mix of ornaments, clocks, and hopefully a few new designs over the next few months.. Also looking forward to doing a few portrait style cuttings.. Got a busy year ahead of me for sure with the plans I have, LOL Thanks for looking,4 points

Wood jumping question
John B and 3 others reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
The wood is probably jumping because the blade is grabbing the wood, instead of cutting it. This happens for a couple reasons. The simplest is a dull blade or blade installed upside down. Barring that, the most common cause is trying to make tight turns too fast. Pushing the wood into the blade, while turning quickly and tightly doesn't allow the blade to cut fast enough and the blade will bind in the wood and the teeth will grab on the upstroke, instead of cut. This can also happen when trying to use too large of a blade. What size & type of blade are you using? What kind of wood are you cutting and how thick is it? Does the lifting happen just in cutting curves or all the time? Many scroll saw blades have reverse teeth in them. This is intended to reduce the tear out on the bottom of the wood. Most reverse tooth blades just have a few teeth pointing up at the bottom. Some have reverse teeth placed through the entire length of the blade. These sometimes cause more trouble with lifting the wood, because there are more reverse teeth engaged at any given time. If the problem persists, you could try a skip tooth blade, which only has teeth that point down. You may sacrifice the slightly cleaner cut that a reverse tooth blade offers, but it should help minimize the lifting. Also, most scrollers remove the hold down bracket on their saw, but if your saw is still equipped with one, make sure it's lowered far enough to help hold the wood down, without being too tight and causing friction between the wood and the table. Good luck. Hope this helps.4 points -

As a kid I remember jumping from the top of a chain link fence to discover a shoelace was securely wrapped around the prongs on the top. Good thing stuff like that happens mostly when you're young and can still take it.4 points -

I love Bernd's great aviation cuttings and he agreed to let me cut a couple of his also. He said to make it as large as my saw would permit but I wanted to try my usual 8 X 10 inch first. I choose to cut the Corsair F4U first because it looked to be the easies one. I feel honored that he allowed me to give this a try. I hope that I did not offend him with my efforts but as I continue to cut more of his work, I will start to understand better how I need to go about cutting it for best results. I really like airplanes, though I am not obsessed with them, and I am looking forward to cutting more to hand on my own wall to admire. Thank you so much for your generosity and I will post the others as I find the time to cut them. Dick heppnerguy3 points -

All things I have seen mentioned are things anyone can add themselves. The vendors start doing all these things the price is going up. You can do them much cheaper. There are so many saws out there that it would be impossible to find one that does not fit your needs. Just have to have the money for the upper commercial models. The vac system is probably the one item that all saws should have built in but would take some engineering to make complete and useful and not to intrude with cutting. Tough to do because you need both top and bottom vac to be efficient.3 points -
I would add, on the EX, a zero clearance insert. Now I'm using empty gift cards.3 points

On my Seyco, I would like a table top without the unnecessary hole rectangle in it and a mechanism to tilt the head like the Excalibur has... On my Hegner, a bigger table would be nice, but I have that covered. I really like it the way it is....3 points -

What changes would you like to make to your saw? Larger table, top feed , different tilt system? I would have a larger steel not aluminum table, relocate the speed and power controls on my hawk. Fredfret2 points -

Buying a new saw
meflick and one other reacted to Scruffydog for a topic
Mounted to the stand with 2 rubber pads, rubber feet on saw, & 2 more rubber pads under lag screw washers. Vibration is in a narrow range throughout the speed dial. The work lite is nice, the blower inadequate. Weighs about 50 pounds. Carry handle. Table tilts 45 each way. Just used the blade that came with it to cut out my wifes name. First "project" of 2019. Thinking about donating the craftsman to the thrift store after I get it put back together. Will use this saw while I do more research and wait for the one I want. So I'll have a cheap saw and a good saw eventually.2 points -
I always wondered why Excalibur ever put a coating on the table in the first place? Why does it even need a coating is really a pretty good question.. I mean.. My DeWalt never had any coating and yeah if I don't keep it waxed it'll rust.. Hawk doesn't have any coatings on the table.. and if I don't wax it... it doesn't rust because it's aluminum.. I'd rather have no coating and sell me the saw for less money because you saved the money from having to coat a table that don't last more than 10 - 15 hours use.. LOL2 points

Bill has given you most of the reasons for your issue, except one. I have found that to slow a blade speed will cause your problem. Try speeding up the blade speed. I teach my students to start with a medium speed, then adjust from there.1 point

Yes, it is quite real. You just select the desired photo. By the way, Russian programmers made a video game dedicated to World War II military aviation, armored vehicles, and fleets. The game allows you to consider the technique at close range from either side. There is even a view from the cockpit. Yesterday I wrote a letter to the developers with a copyright question. They replied that using screenshots to further create patterns fits the fan-art category and does not violate the law. Here is a link to a small video.1 point -

The Dewalt would come with a on board dust collection and the jim dandy easy lift. Adjustable motor to change the blade movement like the EX... The Excalibur would have more table in front of the blade without any stupid coatings on it.. come standard with Pegas clamps.. and some sort of on board dust collection.. have a faster running speed like the DeWalt and Hawks 1500SPM Vrs 1750.. Stand could be designed more like the DeWalt stand... My Hawk 226 Ultra would have variable blade aggression adjustment.. and a on board dust collection system... I think my new BM series will fit my request quite well other than the dust collection, LOL All saws come with a hour meter.. just make it easier for maintenance... and a timer to time projects.. Also all saws come with blade tubes and on board tube holder.. Adjustable height bracket for the foot switch be part of the stands that can mount on either side of the stand.. Dewalt and Ex type saws have grease fittings so you don't have to spend a day taking them apart just to oil / grease them.. or high end sealed bearings..1 point

A Little Bit of Fun Scrolling
GPscroller reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Last week I did the final cutting on one of the biggest scrolling project I have undertook. I still have the sanding, mounting and finish to do on that project, but I needed a break from it. At about the same time I read @Foxfold's post of a compound cutting video. I started watching it and decided to go check out the guy's site. ( JEPlans.com ). Compound cutting fascinates me because I am always surprised how you cut the pattern, take the block of wood apart and here is a neat little whatever it is you were hoping you would have. I look around the site and find a pattern for a pretty simple, but cute nutcracker, like for the ballet. When my daughter was little she danced in it a few years as she progressed through ballet classes. It was always fun to go watch her and all the little ballerinas. So I thought it would be fun to make for her and bring back some memories for her. This was really fun for me to make. All pieces are compound cut. His plans are very well done and he has a Youtube video on making this project. The plan give you a choice of 2 sizes to make. This is the bigger one, stands 7" tall. The plan was $3. So here he is in all his glory. Sorry I am not much of a painter, and boy I did not realize how shaky I am. I would like to do another some day, a little more detailed and bigger. The hair was the hardest part to cut, I could not believe it came out of that little block of wood when I was done.1 point -

Well I made this for the shop walls. This is the first time I've ever used Doug fir for anything other than framing. I had some 4x4's 2 feet long left over from building my shop cabinets a few years ago. Glad I saved them and the frame turned out pretty good I think. I used redwood for the splines. About half way through this I had an "Ah ha!" moment where it clicked for me. Turns and pivots became easier and less stressful, blade choice improved and finally did a project without breaking it. A lot of you have cut this already but I enjoyed it. Oh and if you look carefully you'll still see some dust on the saw. I remembered to take the pic before I cleaned up. Ha ha.1 point
