Just because I wanted to see if my pattern worked, I did this in ½" mdf on my pin-end saw. I'm quicker on that than on my Axminster. LOL It would definitely need painting ( Matt Black I think) and for me it's perhaps a little 'plain' in it's outline, but hey ho it's a start and I already have dozens of thoughts about what I could make into a napkin holder as there are thousands of vector graphics out there. !!!!11 points

found a new use for them, well new to me anyway. fill them with saw dust, label it, and anytime you need to make wood filler for that type of wood you have saw dust available7 points

First Boxes I have made
barb.j.enders and 5 others reacted to meflick for a topic
Technically, these are "bandsaw boxes" BUT the handles were cut on my scroll saw. While we already had an 18" floor model bandsaw (well hubby did) in the shop, he got me a smaller 10" tabletop Rikon bandsaw for Christmas. I like it for most of my needs and it is easy enough for me to change out the blades on it as needed. He also built me a stand to put it on. (Yes, he's a keeper. ) I had been wanting to try to make some bandsaw boxes for quite a while (probably after several were shared here in the Village no doubt.) This gave me the perfect opportunity to try some. The patterns are from a book I purchased, "The New Bandsaw Box Book - Techniques and Patterns for the Modern Woodworker" by David Picciuto. I have made the first two boxes from the book. The first one is aptly called the "Tennessee" box, the state in which I live. I would say that the design - very roughly sort of looks like the outline of the state (but not really. ) The second one is the "St Louis" Box inspired by the "gateway arches." I used scraps we had in the shop since these were my first attempts. Thus the "walnut" in the middle of the St Louis Box does not match up as he has in the book. I had two scraps of walnut, one was dark and one was not. I did flock the inside of each piece and the inside of the drawer with a navy blue flock. I enjoyed making these and plan to try some more. Thanks for looking.6 points -
Well I decided to give Steve Goods circus pattern a try. All made out of 1/8 B/B ply. 90 % of this was made from scrap ply that I had left over from a lot of my portraits and other stuff. I did add a couple more horses to kinda of balance it out. It is pretty long, maybe almost 4 feet. Not sure where I will put it. Already have a few offers for it but I have no idea what I would have to charge and I'm not sure if I want to make another one. Took about four days on and off. The glue and activator he recommended really helped with this project.5 points

OMG .... what i am done .... because of me now the napkin/serviette holder mania is set free ...... Great job done! I like it! Napkin folding - 1.Top edges must by closed. Also the vertical line. 2. Bend top corner all the way down. Both sides 3. End wiew. All the closed sides must by now vertical. I think so looks the "skirt" better .5 points

Does look good... But for me,,,, not into women's dress designs. I wonder what a porpoise or whale would look like splashing up out of the middle of those napking....Maybe a rocket taking off with a red napkin "flame" coming out the bottom... or....dragster.... Seriously, looks very good Foxfold.5 points

Here are a couple of pieces I have made for a Valentine day swap in one of my Plant groups. One pattern is Russ's(the flower pot) and I don't think he put it in the Library (I really can't find it) and I really need it, and the cupid is Bobscroll, sorry I don't remember who did the heart. Thanks guys I love your patterns.4 points

When I bought my Jet16, I installed it in the garage, but since there is still furniture being assembled, there is no room left now. I moved into the house and took a corner in the kitchen. Everything would be fine, but when the wife starts cooking dinner, I can’t think about anything but food. Tasty smells just make me crazy.3 points -
I used a lot of pill bottles for that also.3 points

When I joined in August last year, about 5 months ago, I'd bought a little pin-end saw from Aldi a couple of weeks before. I was so happy with my new hobby that my other half gave me a 4ft x 3ft corner of his 'man cave'. But having joined this group and seen what could be done with a 'different' saw, I bought one of those too. Well I kind of 'outgrew' my 4'x3' space but didn't like to ask for more as 'sharing' his man cave was something totally new to Tony. However, it's not gone unnoticed that I'm quite 'smitten' with this 'scrolling lark' so he let me expand and has even put cupboards on the wall for me to keep my stuff in. I love him lots2 points

Now it is time to get back to real work but, I had so much fun building the first nutcracker, I had to do another. This one is 25% larger, so it is big brother meets little brother. I was kind of proud of the paint job on this one. I added more to it because he is older big brother, he has more glitz. I figured out how to do the round eyes. Take a small pencil eraser and dab it in paint than on the face. Same with the button, sand down a pencil eraser and dab. So the fun is over. Got to do some more serious projects.2 points

People balk at paying $500+ for a scroll saw. It they add what you all want, a cheap saw will start at that price, the middle price saws will be close to Hegner, Hawk prices and who knows what Hegner and Hawk will cost. It is not expensive to add good dust extraction, PVC pipe is cheap. Personally I'd rather add my own. It works good and did not cost me much other that the vac and I need a vac in the shop anyway, so the cost for it doesn't count. My dust collector, as most has 4" hoses, and to neck that down to a 2" or smaller, it does not work to good. I know I tried it. It is made for 4" pipe. Okay I do not know a lot about dust collectors so maybe there is a way to do it. I'm just saying on a scroll saw,,,, you want to pay more for them?? What the manufactures make available is what they think will sell and they will make a profit. For all but maybe Hawk, Hegner, and PS, it is not a big ticket item. They sell lots more of there other equipment. In the great world of wood tools,,, scroll saw it not a big selling item... we are the minority in the wood working world. Just my opinion.2 points

Outstanding Customer Service
RabidAlien reacted to Hudson River Rick for a topic
I posted this on another site, thought all would like to know that there are business people out ready to serve us. I just wanted everyone to know about my recent purchase from QTE North America. I ordered the new Pagas Head Clamp Set for my ailing EX-21 on 1/19 and was excited to receive them in about a week. When I opened the box, my excitement waned because I noticed that I was sent the wrong set of clamps and my saw is pretty much out of service. I called QTE this morning (FRI.), and received the best customer service I have ever experienced. I spoke with Richard Boehl and he immediately knew what my problem was and couldn't apologize enough. Rich quickly looked up my order and promised to ship out the correct set quickly, well in less then an hour, I got an e-mail that said my clamp set was on the way to the east coast via express mail, and I should expect them in a few days.I would highly recommend that anyone who needs or wants Pegas parts, to purchase from QTENorth America, INC. www.Qtena.com Rick1 point -

Magazine patterns
OCtoolguy reacted to NC Scroller for a topic
I open up the staples to remove the insert. I then refold the insert to get just the pattern I need. Most of the time I put the insert back in to the magazine so I find it again. I do try to maintain a spread sheet where I put the pattern name (what I call it), the designer's name, and the magazine name and issue number.1 point -

They came out great. You are a quick learner. You know though you just went down a different tunnel with no way out. There are so many different patterns out there and also easy to make your own patterns for. The sky is the limit on these too. I need to get back to some of these too. My plate is full and not enough time in the day but when people show things like this I just want to do some too. I have saw dust running in my veins. Thanks for showing.1 point -

Beautiful work!! I love doing the bandsaw boxes... other than the fact that every time I want to make some my saw is set up with the big re-saw blade and it's quite a process to keep changing it from one thing to the next... so... I guess maybe I just need another bandsaw1 point -
Great idea.. I've done this but instead I used zip-loc baggies.. the freezer ones have a space to write on them that I used to label what kind of sawduct it was.. While on the sawdust topic.. How good is the sawdust for using as a wood filler that we produce with our saws? I ask because it's not completely just sawdust... it's part of your paper pattern, tape, shelf liner or whatever you use that is also on the wood you're cutting.. so I've always wondered about this.. anytime I've needed sawdust for this I've went out and cut.. " just wood" to make the sawdust.. which is why I always saved it in the baggies..1 point

Buying a new saw

Yeah, we are supposed to get 12" of snow on Monday. Plus, their terminal is 1 hour away. So I'll give them until Tuesday. They have my phone number and instructions to call me if they get lost. Then, of course, Wednesday is supposed to be even colder. I just hope after bouncing around in three or four trucks it doesn't arrive broken. We'll see.1 point -
A few years ago my friend bought something and Fed Ex was to deliver it.. they did something similar and in the end.. my friend ended up having to go to them to get it because they couldn't find his house, LOL In his case.. there is a North and South to his road.. and the way its set up.. logical thinking would be he is on the North end... which yes he was on the north end of the South... but he was also about the last house possible on the north end of the south... yeah kinda confusing but you'd think daily mail people and whatnot would know their route... My friend just told them to hold it and he would come to Fed Ex to pick it up, LOL... They almost sent the item back as un - deliverable..Not sure of your situation.. but.. you might ask if it can be picked up at their terminal... maybe able to get it on Monday instead too... Just an idea..1 point

What changes would you like to see
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
Regarding the question of dust control, I didn't add it to either of my saws for the health reasons. I just wanted a way to keep the flying dust down so the my shop stays a bit cleaner. I do wear a dust mask most of the time. At least when I remember to put it on. As to dust control built into the saws, those manufacturers who actually produce their saws like Hegner and Bushton/Hawk etc, why don't they design something that is an add-on to their product and offer it as such? I realize that building it into the saw increases the cost and the retail price. So, offer it as an add-on item and let the owner of the saw decide if they want to purchase it. No different than what the folks at ScrollNado have done. If we owners can come up with some sort of piping to keep the dust down, I'm sure the saw builders can do it too and probably come up with something better and maybe even quieter. Thanks for listening.1 point -

Yesterday was only 10F here.. I worked most all day out in the shop and never really got cold never had to come in to get warmed up etc.. was out there about 6 hours... Temperature is a funny thing.. and I'm guessing the humidity plays a huge role in ow it feels... for instance there have been times where I'm freezing out there but the actual temp is 30F.. or the difference between 40F raining and 30F dry.. I'm warmer in the 30F dry than the 40 and rain... Funny because I got 4 made to order clock orders yesterday and had some orders to finish up from a few days ago.. I was all worried about being cold.. got the all cut.. just gotta do some finishing touches to them today.. was trying to knock them out before the real cold comes this next week.. high temps on Wed. supposed to be -4 We don't normally get too many days in Michigan like that.. might get a few - degrees but it's usually overnight if we do.. so this next week is going to be a cold one for us.. Like I've said earlier... this gives me time to work on the website.. and because I listed things on Amazon the other day when I talked about it being cold.... that is where 2 of my sales came from that I'm working on now.. I hate doing the website work so days like that actually help me do the stuff I don't really like to do and probably wouldn't do otherwise .. I'm always having to make myself do the website stuff, LOL1 point -
Was Looking Forward To Shop Time Today But...
SCROLLSAW703 reacted to Scruffydog for a topic
I was looking forward to some shop time yesterday but my new saw never showed up. Took the day off too. It was about -5F here in east central Wisconsin yesterday with a -20 windchill. FedEx blamed it on the weather, imagine that. Especially odd since we passed aFedEx truck on the way home, about 5 miles from our house! Speaking of lunch, went over to Sheboygan to have lunch with my lovely wife at our favorite Chinese place. It was excellent! Then made the trek across town to Menards to return the saw I bought last weekend. Before all that, we ran a bunch of errands, one of which included a stop at the local thrift we like a lot where I found a real bargain; 2 pair of Wrangler jeans in very good condition for $4 each. That almost never happens. The thrift store supports a local school, so I'm happy to donate and shop there. So I guess two oldsters can manage the bitter cold but FedEx cannot. Oh well, suppose I should cut them some slack, they rescheduled the delivery for today (Sat.) Stay warm out there, our polar vortex is supposed to last for a couple of weeks. Mr. Wilson, No offense my friend, but if ya don't mind me askin', what makes ya think you're a "wimp?" Where you Gentlemen are all from, you've got a different type of winter weather than we do here in the midwest. I've been in your part of the country in the winter time, and it weren't much fun, as I recall. Snow packed & icy roads, closed roads, snow storms, wind and cold. And we were tryin' to load cattle in all that to go south. I've been thru Wisconsin plenty since, but that trip I remember well. Dad, myself, four of our other trucks, and 3 other trucks Dad had hired to load cattle to go South. Part of them were goin' to Mississippi, and part them went to Louisiana. Then we loaded Bayou calves and went back to a feedlot at home. Man that was a long trip!!! I ain't gonna blow smoke up your backside, when we get a Canadian Cold front sayin' howdy, trust me, there is NOTHIN' out here on the plains to slow that 50 mph wind down! Then we get a snow storm comin' in from the west out of the Rockies to leave us a big Howdy-do! When them two meet in the middle, guess where the party is, brother? Ding! Ding! Ding! You guessed it! Right over NW Kansas! And it stays cold and windy, icy, snow blowin' up yer back side. AHHH! The temp might be 10 above, but the wind chill with it will be -30 sometimes or better. We just had our first actual "snow" of the year. 3 1/2" total, 65 mph sustained winds, -42* wind chill. Before the big snow, we had about a 1/10th of an inch of ice hangin' off of everything, on the roads, power lines. Folks lose their minds if they ain't able to get out of their house just to see if they can tear up there vehicles, get to the coffee shop to gripe because they don't have electricity, or whatever. I just slide across the street to my rented meager little shop, the boys and I walk in the door, and it's 70* constant there. Providin' we manage to keep electricity, ya understand. Say "howdy" to all my tools, and we decide what we're gonna play on today!:) When I had my little corner of the world in our basement, things weren't that warm. at best, it'd be 60* in the shop, and it was tough to get motivated when it was that chilly. I dealt with lots of bad weather in my trucking career. I hated throwin' iron, but there were lots of times I had no choice. Other times, I used Bull Hauler Chains. Douse the drives with bleach, & spin'em til they grab! It just depended on the situation. There were other times I threw iron on the trailer, left steerin' axle, and the drives just to keep the truck on the road because the road was that icy. Ya never know. But now that I've retired out & hung up my keys, and since my heart attacks last winter, my Sawbones has me on this damn blood thinner. If it gets below 40*, to go outside, hell I look like the Michelin Man!!! This gettin' old ain't fer sissie's, and the feller what said it was needs to be punched square in the nose! Mr. Wilson, there's no need for ya to feel like a wimp, Sir. Most days in the winter time, I stay in the house, and my dogs teach me to read better, and we nap a lot. Dream about big shiny Peterbilts, Sir!;) Sawdust703(brad)1 point
