    Finally Complete

This is one I started early last Spring. Then in June, my eyes got so bad I had to quit scrolling all together. Finally got my eyes fixed in October, in December I got back to being able to actually scroll again. Completed it today. It measures 31" x 24". 21 lines of text. The hardest part of the whole project it gluing those lines of text to the board. This may be going to a Church in Memphis, Tennessee. If that doesn't work out I will try to donate it to something...

  2. Every once and awhile I like to turn a few items in order to keep up my skill. A couple of weeks ago when I was giving a talk on enhancing your items with clay inserts. I only had one example of a turned item where I put a strip in the lip. There was a question about doing a pattern in the bottom of a bowl and then enhancing. I took up the challenge and came up with the attached bowl.

    For the wife

My wife does some sewing and other crafts and I recently made her a craft area. I am gonna let her decide the finish on it. I was also able to save the cut out pattern when I was done cutting. Maybe I can use it as a spray paint pattern.

    US Probation Seal

Hey Folks, Don't often post things I've made, I'm but kinda proud of how this baby turned out. My daughter is a US Federal Probation Officer in Iowa. I wanted to do something for her to celebrate her accomplishments. I saw a number of members on this forum posting military type plaques of various styles and that got my thought processes going. She showed me what her department seal looked like so I took all the tips and ideas gleaned here and came up with this representation. It is about 16 inches in diameter. The bottom layer is 1/2" Walnut, middle layer is 1/4" Sycamore and the top layer 3/16" Walnut. I milled all my own wood. I used Inkscape to come up with a cutting patterns. The color picture of the flag is a blowup of an image I found on a photo web site (royalty free). To help mitigate wood expansion the bottom layer Walnut is cut in an octagonal shape and then splines used to join it to a 1/2" plywood backer. The middle and top layers are loosely screwed to the layer beneath so hopefully there is enough room left for any movement of the wood. I used a FD UR #5 on the bottom layer, FD #3 on the middle layer and a FD #2/0 on the top layer. For all the veining I first cut the vein with a flat blade then came back and recut with a FD #2/0 spiral following the initial blade kerf. Finished with a Deft Satin Lacquer spray. I have 16 hours in cutting time on all the layers and probably another couple hours for assembly and finishing. Thanks for letting me share. Larry

  5. I kinda got distracted in the middle of this one. Cut this back in December, then got some other honey-do's (and, yes, a few "Why the hell not" projects) that came up. Some friends of ours just signed the mortgage on a new house and expect to be moving in at the end of next month (literally, new house. Its still being built). So....a house-warming gift. I was even happy with how the frame turned out, and I *hate* frames.

    Ribbon rack

I made 2 of these this weekend for a silent auction for my Grandson's AAA hockey team. I will be interested to what they go for. I have made lots of hockey but also other sports over the years. I just have a Lacrosse in the "Papa do list"

    Crosses

I finished these this past weekend. Sue Mey designs. These are very popular, 2 of the 3 were sold within 30 minutes of posting them on FB and the other is spoken for. Made of 3/4 Poplar.

  9. We finally got it, snow that is. Balmy 24 degrees outside. I am unable to shovel and altho my wife has always liked snow shoveling, being Canadian, we just paid someone to do the shoveling. The snow looks nice and fluffy but it is remarkably heavy. Being retired is nice since I don't have to go anywhere. Nice thing is we will be in the high 50's this coming Saturday.

    Valentine's Day swap

Here are a couple of pieces I have made for a Valentine day swap in one of my Plant groups. One pattern is Russ's(the flower pot) and I don't think he put it in the Library (I really can't find it) and I really need it, and the cupid is Bobscroll, sorry I don't remember who did the heart. Thanks guys I love your patterns.

  11. I look at this issue as a marketing tool as well as something I want. With all the brands coming out, all using the excaliber basis, it comes down to what color do you want to look at in your shop. I;m not thinking about starter saws, mid to upper level saws is where I would add it. All it would take is to retool the table top is to add some tapped holes for clamps to hold the under side tubing, then lock-line for part you position. Dust floats down, if the lock-line is to the side, it will suck in the majority of it, maybe all of it. The top lock line, like I said, put it inside the upper arm, or on top and remold the upper arm cover to hide it. One manifold for a vacuum to connect to. Do not include a vacuum, make it an optional accessory, just as now a light is an option in the upper and mid level saws (starter saws come with them, at least porter cable does). Cost - yea it would increase cost somewhat, but drastically, I doubt it. And let's face it, most of us buy the machine on a CC which you either pay off, or make payments on, if you make payments, the difference in payment is not going to be much at all. And if it were me selling them, I would just eat the cost increase, and accept a slightly lower margin, sales would flow to my saw I think.

  15. Playing card box by Steve Good. I tried my hand at epoxy inlay. Glitter for the red, coffee grounds for the black. Not perfect, but not bad.

  17. I really enjoyed the video. It's old stuff to Ex21 owners but for someone wanting to buy a new saw the video is invaluable. I am most satisfied with my Hawk and am not in the market for another saw. BUT if I were the video would tell me a lot. There are a lot of suggestions on this forum, and I enjoy reading each one, but for a newbie the video is great. I also appreciate all the responses.

  18. Paul, most of what I read was bad vibration and loud... also a few clamping / tension issue... but.. nothing real solid issues that was strictly the saw being defective... most likely user error but.. I don't know that either way... I do agree with the fact that Ray is the one that made these saws so popular with his setting them up before shipping them... Even when I first got mine I was like this thing is junk... but you know me I'm going to mess and tinker with it... runs real smooth now.. been cutting on it today I personally wouldn't be afraid to buy any one of them whether Twain or China made.. but many expect a tuned saw out of the box.. and are not mechanically inclined enough to tune it themselves..Just my opinion..

  19. He talks like there are many new things on this saw. It is an Excalibur and most features are the same. The dust collection is the same as the Ex came with, and most people removed in a short time. Little pieces of waste get caught in the clear plastic membrane and plugs it. And, when I saw, most of the dust is on top, which if you use the blower, it get blown away. That is not dust extraction... I am a little more disappointed in Mr. Good's review than the saw. I have a lot of respect for Steve, but this time I felt like I was watching a sales promotion other than a review. A person new to scrolling may get the impression this saw has a lot of new features, when the only new thing is the clamps. But that said, I am sure it is a great saw, just like the Ex has been. The clamps appear to be an upgrade from the old style, maybe someday I will get a set for my Seyco. I do love the color. I wish they had increased the table to size like the Seyco.

  20. I agree Home Depot and even Lowes carry oak dowels and also some larger oak used for stairs and railings. You can also glue a couple pieces together and do some segmenting. Stain a piece dark black and sandwich in between to lighter piece and so on. For a project as nice as that I would not skimp on using lesser quality woods to make up for cost. You will never be able to keep consistency colors throughout using light woods like poplar. Are you using a Beall wood threading tool? I have one burried somewhere in my shop that I used for cutting threads for bolt clocks that I make. They work well. Mine is used with a router. They do sell just taps and dies also.

Was you able to stack cut any of the frame? That is the type of project you can’t get paid enough for the time spent. Outstanding job!!

  31. The only way they will get a tuned up one out of the box, in the US is to buy new Seyco, Hawk, or Hegner. I truthfully cannot recommend the Seyco as a "better" saw over the other Ex types, but I can recommend the service from Seyco over the ones that sell this type saw and the service from Advanced Machinery (Hegner). I do not have experience with the service for the Hawk.

  32. I pretty much agree with Paul on this. First look was it's a new EX-21 with a different paint job and decals. I'm thinking that the company that got the new contract for making all of these saws is doing very well right now.

  40. Does look good... But for me,,,, not into women's dress designs. I wonder what a porpoise or whale would look like splashing up out of the middle of those napking....Maybe a rocket taking off with a red napkin "flame" coming out the bottom... or....dragster.... Seriously, looks very good Foxfold.

  46. It's been a lot of fun seeing what everyone has done. This is my first project of the year. It is a wedding present for my nephew. A Steve Goode pattern. Walnut with two coats of tung oil. A while back I started making clocks for all nieces and nephews who are getting married.

  47. I finished the Christmas Bells that I am going to go hang on the door knobs some of my family members. The bottom two are Mahogany and the top three are BB, two sprayed with gold color paint and backed with felt. The other stained and painted. These were really fun. I will hopefully get started earlier next year and give to more people.
