  1. Made the box and the diffuser for my wife for Valentine, the hummingbird plaque is for a very good friend and the old man is just because I liked the pattern. I think I will get the torch to it. I just added the burn effect.

  3. SUCCESS! Tried the local auto parts store for the belts, but no luck. So went to Harbor Freight and secured the chain link belt material and made up the two needed belts. Of course I made them one link too short but that was a quick fix. Cleaned out the mud wasp nest in the belt compartment (it is Florida you know) and turned it on. Smooth and quiet, almost like brand new. So thanks to all and I'm glad that it was a learning experience for myself and others who got into this thread.

    Butch Sundance

I had to start on this one twice. The First time Paul Newman's eye fell out,so the 2nd time I redrew it as I was laying it out on the wood.Let me tell you I was still breathing soft and shallow when I got to it.And Redford's hair. But I got it cut.A Big sigh of relief.

    Sleigh ride

Too cold here for a sleigh ride, wind chill between -40 and -50 C all week. Charles Hand pattern 11 X 14 stack cut 1/4 and 1/8 BB ply. Used Sawbird 2/0 spiral and #3 ultra reverse. Jeff

  7. I'm a big fan of the Lord of the Rings movies. So far I've been too lazy to read the books. Love this pattern by Charles Dearing. I cut it in 1/2" Red Oak . It's 8" X 10". The backing is rough cut cedar which I stained English Chestnut then fogged it with flat black from a rattle can to darken it a bit. I planed one side to get it to 1/8" thickness and cut 1 1/2" planks and glued them to 1/4" BB rough side up.

  10. They say rabbits multiply like.......well it's true in my shop......these are all of the colors I'm doing that people have asked for so far for these rustic bunnies.......all cut on the scroll saw one board at a time......orders are piling in, hope I can keep up.

I agree with you 100%. True scroll saw artist. I can't even visualize that kind of scenes when I look at a piece of wood. I do not see a pattern either. She must draw it on the wood or it is totally free hand. Thanks for sharing. I now have a new idol!

  12. Saw the recent Hummingbird pattern by Alex Fox and the idea of a stacked design on coins appealed to me, so I bought the pattern and set out to cut the three layers. I used an Eisenhower for the top, flattened bronze Costa Rica coin for the middle, and flattened Kennedy for the back. As you can see, the scale is very very small, so the little bronze outline from the middle layers isn't hardly even visible. So, I was a success in that I got it cut, but not so much in the final result. I do like the top layer by itself though.

  16. At the club this week I was asked if I could design a pattern that had LOVE on 2 sides that he incorporate into holder for a tea light. (He knew that 2 side would be weird). I took Steve Goods pattern that said "LOVE/WOOD". Copied the love to the wood side and put on a pattern from Steve for tea light holder. I was not sure what it would look like so a cut a demo and it turned out not too bad so I finished. 6 1/2 tall from some scrap pine 1 3/4 x 1 3/4

  23. Here is a Steve Good pattern that I received an order for. I made it using some pine I had and liked the way the darker center part would work well for the football, Steve Good had suggested using 1/4 inch for the laces and the white part to the football but I thought it would look way too thick and changed it to 1/8th inch thick ply. I am glad I did. I was considering just cutting those parts out of the football and putting a white backer board on the back of the piece. I am glad I did not use the 1/4 inch suggestion as I believe my thoughts on it turned out better then it would have with the original suggestion. Dick heppnerguy

  27. I also use it on my pens and small things that are turned because it is real easy to polish out on a lathe. If i want shiny on a wood project lacquer is my choice. Kevin you could use that for your key chains instead of epoxy resins. The thing is this stuff smells and people do get an allergy when working with it. Needs good ventilation or use the no odor stuff. Little more expensive but for those it is worth it. need at least 2 formulas but maybe even better with 3. Thin to seal wood, med to build coats faster and thick to build coats even faster. But with each there is dry time and it increases with thickness. Now they sell n accelerator that when sprayed on cures the glue in seconds and you can move on and use more coats in one application. something to explore. There are many brands out there but suggest you stay away from Stickfast. gets bad reviews many times. I use Satellite CA glues. (hot stuff)

  32. Bearwoods advertises they are going to have like 1000 Charles Dearing patterns available. That was a while age, but it still says that at their sight. Maybe if you contact them they could speed it up some. Here is one almost as good: https://oldcrowscrollwerks.weebly.com/store/p622/Gandalf_the_Gray.html

  36. This paragraph from the U.S. Mint website should help to clear this up: Section 331 of Title 18 of the United States code provides criminal penalties for anyone who ‘fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States. This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of the coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is. As a matter of policy, the U.S. Mint does not promote coloring, plating or altering U.S. coinage: however, there are no sanctions against such activity absent fraudulent intent. (Source U.S. Mint) Nice work as always Randy. I never cease to be amazed at what you can do with a coin and a Scroll Saw.

  38. On an old Craftsman Drill Press, I was able to find a belt in the Lawn Mower belts at HD. Or take it to an auto supply store - they have gadgets that can measure a belt and might have your size.

    Truck Puzzle

I get requests all the time for truck puzzles at craft shows and there isn't much out there. Also our local Toys for Tots Program wants trucks and puzzles! Found some time this week to design a dump truck puzzle. My guess is it will appeal to 5-9 yr old boys. My next project is to design a simpler pattern for the 3 yr old kids. bb

  40. Ok! With a little persuasion from the tool of choice (hammer), got the lever moving. Greased it up and now it's functional. Off to Harbor Freight to pick up the chain link belt material. Should make up two belts as needed offered by them. Got an intarsia project going, so I don't want to wait three to five days for shipment just to find out it's the wrong size. John, for the way I use my drill press, I don't change speeds. That's probably why I didn't realize the belts were so despicable. Haven't opened the cover in years. Blake

  41. I use those link belts on my tablesaw and really do work well. The problem with those on a drill press is they are bulkier and if your drill press has 2 sets of spindles they could get in the way of each other. Easier changing a one piece belt on a drill press when changing speeds. Ebay has a few dealers that are selling them. I am sure they are interchangable with the many clone drill presses being sold today. I too recommend that PB blaster it does work well

  42. Until you get your tension lever freed up you could walk the belts off the pulleys and take them to an auto parts store. Sometimes they can match your belt size exactly.

  44. We escaped the record cold temps in NW Illinois by taking the motorhome to the Arizona desert. The day before we left I cobbled together a folding table for my Craftsman saw and brought it along. The saw is being powered by an inverter wired to the coach batteries. And those batteries are charged by solar panels. I found my table too tall to sit at a chair, but too short to stand. The hatch on the Honda CR-V was just right. The first project is this basket (my first basket too), made from maple, walnut, and cherry. Will probably finish with Danish Oil. May try an Alex Fox pattern next. Tom
