    I Love Cats

I love big cats and have scroll several. I really wasn't going to do anymore until I saw one @mikewix posted on Lumberjocks. I had to do it. Not sure I did as well as Mike did, but I gave it a shot. It is 1/2" thick Oak, 12" x 15'. A Charles Hand pattern called "I Love My Jag", pattern # 062. I cut the bulk of it with a 2/0 Pegas spiral, the went back over it with a 3/0 Flying Dutchman New Spiral blade to do some of the finer detain and then over it again with a #3 Pegas MG blade to make sharp corners and points in the detail where needed. I'm thinking I would like to do some staining on it, just not sure I am brave enough.

  2. I cut this , for my wife, from 1/2 Purple heart...the wood was purchased from Ocooch hardwoods.....I worked a lot of hours using mostly 2/0 & 3/0 FD new spiral blades....finished with a natural stain and spray poly......I think the wood makes this work !......The wife loves it.....I hope pictures show the detail of Fiona's wonderful pattern....Comments welcome....Steve.....I am not good with the tech end of things , my wife just explained to me i did not show two of the detailed pictures....hope i got it right this time....Steve.

  3. This is a clock like I made for my wife about 4 years ago and my grandson's fiancé told me that since they have been living in their own houses for a few years and have everything they need, they are not asking for wedding gifts, However, she did mention to my grandson that she would like one of Grandpa's clocks. ( This is the one she was talking about ) so I made them one. I have been working on it for about a month, due to all the company we have had and finally finished it yesterday, as everyone has left for about 10 days. I have two bells coming for the bell tower and then I will be completely finished. It has several coats of finish on it and in May we will be taking it to Oregon for the wedding. This is the most challenging piece I have ever made, along with the Eiffel Tower I made a few months back. Dick heppnerguy

  4. My brother owns a lumber mill business and called me last Friday to come dig what scraps I want out of the scrap bin and the guys were there doing grade lumber and they cut off ends and what not whatever is left goes into the wood stove unless I come get it. Last month I hauled about this much cherry and a little oak. He said they’ll be there again next week if I want more. I didn’t get time enough to get the other bin. But maybe swing back tomorrow to get the last bit. First picture is one of the 5 bins and the other is what I dug out of the bin. Some nice pieces of curly hard maple and I think there was a couple Birdseye.

  5. I recently bought a pile of reclaimed timber and in amongst it were several short lengths of macrocarpa tongue and groove. Luckily it proved to be an ideal thickness for inlaying onto some pine offcuts I had lying around so I made these small hinged boxes using the excellent tutorial by our very own Jim Finn. Rob

  7. Some time ago I asked about staining poplar for a project my sister wanted me to do. The last picture is a cross stitch frame she brought. It was a fun project to figure out how to make all the parts. Stained golden oak. Made 21”, 23”, 4-38”, 2-55”.

    Hey Admin/Travis

Someone just posted a YouTube video title "General Shop Tricks" in General scroll sawing with some tips/hacks. (Of course it's not in the right category, which bothers me because I'm pretty obsessive about keeping things in order) - BUT that's not why I'm writing. Favorite Shop Tips might make a interesting Challenge, especially if it's from members and not some anonymous internet source. I know I have a couple I'd share. Be well, winter is nearly over.

  10. A double Toy box I made about 10 years ago. (600x600x1200mm). I made a few single ones prior at 600mm cubed. From memory I used the scroll saw to cut the internal cuts of the letters. I made the lids lift off so as to prevent little finger getting jammed with a hinged lid.

  11. Here's what I have to offer. Just finished it. It's called the Royal Game of UR. Older than chess from what I've read. Very fun game. Kind of like Backgammon. Everything was cut on scroll saw cuz it was to dang cold to go out in unseated shed and use table saw.

    Golf Wall Clock

I found myself in need of a clock in my "home office", so after some searching I found just the pattern at the Wooden Teddy Bear. It's a Sue Met pattern "Golf Wall Clock". Armed with that I now needed to figure out what wood to use. A few months back we had an oversized chair that had some serious wear and tearing. Instead of dragging it to the curb I decided to take it to the garage and take it apart. The material came off quite easily exposing some promising wood. Took about a week to get it completely taken apart, I separated the wood into 2 piles. 1 for the burn pile and the other for possible projects. About 20% of the wood had potential. Gathered up enough to get 7 pieces an inch and a half wide and about 11 inches long. Ran them thru the joiner to square the edges then glue them together then thru the thickness planner. Ended up with a rather nice looking blank. So in the future I'll be taking furniture apart before tossing it to the curb. I ended up with a nice clock for my "Golf" theme office area... I did make a couple of modifications to personalized the clock for me. Chris

    Butterfly Update

Just showing the difference of the untreated and treated Cedar. I love the dark red color it brings out. I am working on a series of these out of Cedar, Walnut, Red Oak and Poplar. I will post an overall picture when I am done.

  14. Bernd sent me this pattern after I had cut a previous airplane pattern of his. I am not sure how I will finish this one but I do know that all the pattern makers that post and share their work with the rest of us, are certainly appreciated. This one I cut in 1/4 inch BB ply. I am not sure if I am going to try to make a frame for it or just use an extended backer board instead. I do plan on cutting the manufacture's name and gluing is on of maybe just cutting it into this board. The pattern had that included in it but I want to change the font. This was a little challenging in places but I enjoy the challenges. Dick heppnerguy

The only real 3D cutting, I call it "compound cutting" for some reason, I have tried are the nutcrackers in my gallery. But I really had fun doing it and definitely want to do more.

    Browsers Welcome

G'day all, I have just posted this pattern in the New Pattern Section. https://www.scrollsawvillage.com/forums/topic/32901-browsers-welcome/ I cut this many years ago for my stall, but as I almost always do I stack cut 3. I don't think I ever had on display for more than a market or 2 as they all sol.,d, along with another couple of batches. Cheers John It's amazing how much you forget. I had completely;y forgotten about this technique I used of staining the frame and backer the same colour. I think I may do it on some more stuff.

  24. Very impressive... Purpleheart is such a pain to scroll so I know that must have taken quite a while... I guess it is a great thing it was only 1/2" thick... Reminds me of the Weirwood trees on Game of Thrones... Minus the face, of course...

What a beautiful project you have crafted from a great pattern. Your patience to do that kind of work I envy. It looks awesome and is stunning the way it is even without any stain. Thanks for sharing.

  26. That's beautiful Steve and I can see why your wife loved it. I agree that it looks great cut into the purple heart but - oh my, between all those tiny fret holes, and the density of that wood - I think they statement that it took a lot of hours is no doubt true. I admire your patience and tenancity to do that one.. Love the little animals hidden in the branches. Thanks for showing.

Outstanding! I don't think I could bring myself to stain it. Maybe just the frame perhaps but I'd probably try an overlay frame just so I didn't stuff it up! Rob

No fence is needed. I did not have the factory fence. I use either my own built or a Carter magnetic fence. That is your call on what to do. Good luck. No there is no riser on that saw. Not sure if that backbone is one piece or split because the switch is in the way. On my Delta it was split so I added the riser. From what I can tell it looks solid and not split.

The fence probably cost another $100 if you wanted the fence.. doesn't look like it'd saw more than maybe 6" resaw unless you got a riser block...

I finally got this finished up. I've been having some back issues so I've only been able to get a few cuts in at a time. It still needs to be framed and finished but I am definitely glad to get something cut again. 1/8 cherry, FD UR #1 blade

  37. Hard Maple doesn't scroll very easily though.. I might make cutting boards out of a lot of this.. Or practice using my CNC on some of it too.. . Most of the the cherry load I got will become clocks.. if scroll sawing it.. it'll all have to be resawed in half as they are thick pieces.. below is the pictures of one of the loads of cherry with just a few oak boards in there too.

  41. i have the white line on the adjustment knob, too. as with yours and others, the knob does turn and at one point i was having serious problems. turned out the knob had made a complete 360 without me noticing. thought my blades were gettin shorter, too! after getting it back to where is supposed to be using the line on the knob, i noticed its real easy to know its parallel. one full turn out of alignment can be seen with the eye.

Good eye! Glad to hear he's recognizable! This is him as Micky Goldmill, Rocky's trainer. It'll be a bit more obvious when I add his black toboggan. I'll post it when I finish, unless I make firewood out of it. Burgess was a great character actor.

    Glue to use?

Check out wood glues. Many wood magazines have reviewed titebond wood glue. Seen debates on whether titebond III is worth it. Just check out outdoor, waterproof glues. Being waterproof should take washings, but the dishwasher may not handle it. Epoxy will work and then there will be the decision of which for setup time. Epoxy has a lot of strength, generally the more setting time the stronger. For a spoon, it may be overkill, unless an elephant is using it. General outdoor project building uses an outdoor glue. Just double check with manufactures if it can be used for food, ie eating. Many projects are put on walls or display and spoons tend to be carved out of one piece of wood. link for titebond RJFhttps://www.amazon.com/s?k=titebond+wood+glue&ascsubtag=1ba00-01000-a0049-win10-dsk00-nomod-us000-gatwy-feature-SEARC&tag=amz-mkt-fox-us-20
