  1. This is March break in our area and we had our granddaughters today and we made tool boxes. The plan came from SSW issue 71 Dave Van Ess. with some modification. The girls are now tall enough to operate the on off foot petal and so can do all the scrolling. The decorations came from a bunch of scraps. They had a great time and my back is killing me. They are taking to Girl Guides to get the WW badge.

    Testing the new saw

Saw did pretty well....ran into an issue today, just before I got to the finish, where it was losing blade tension whenever I tried to cut. Disassembled and reassembled the saw, and whatever the issue was cleared up. Still have no idea what was wrong. But it finished the cut, so I'm happy.

  4. I finally made me a frame and cut the word 'Mitchell" into the pattern. So just for anyone that might be wondering how it came out in the end. Here you go Dick heppnerguy

  5. I made so many errors I pretty much gave up on the project and just rushed it finished... It looks pretty good from 5 feet away... Shouldn't look too bad hanging on the wall as long as nobody gets too close to it... At least you can tell what it is... I used Walnut, Brazillian Cherry, Basswood, Sycamore, African Mahogany, Wenge and Western Red Cedar... Pattern by Bruce Worthington at intarsia.net...

  6. There is a sheet material called MDO (medium density overlay), not to be confused with MDF. This is specifically made for outside sign applications. I've never used it, but I think it's sort of expensive and not something you will find at the local Big Box. If you know of any commercial sign making businesses in your area, you might check with them. Otherwise Google is your guide. For a piece that small, probably not cost effective to buy a whole sheet of MDO. If MDO isn't practical, then a good quality, exterior grade plywood would work fine. This is not the same as treated or "Wolmanized" plywood. Again, you won't find it at most Big Box stores. You will likely have to get it from a full service lumber supplier. As long as it's well painted, it should hold up well. I made a sign for a friends daycare business about 8 or 9 years ago. Last I was by, it still looked like it was holding up. I just used exterior grade plywood and several coats of exterior paint. Personally, I would recommend just using a really good exterior paint and skip the Marine Spar Varnish. Make sure you cover all the edges with at least 1 or 2 extra coats.

    3D Chess

So I recently posted about an attempt I made at cutting a (very simple) 3D chess piece. It was only my second attempt at compound cutting and left a lot to be desired. This morning I am browsing Facebook, when suddenly in my feed this picture pops up. It is from the spring issue of Fox Chapel Publishing's Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine. After the problems I encountered trying to cut what is essentially a simple outline, this kind of thing boggles the mind. Anyone here ever done anything like this? After my initial post on the subject, I got a lot of advice about blades for compound cutting , and I am currently in the process of trying out some that I have not used before. But this looks impossible...

  10. Kevin, you are correct. I like watching people scroll. You are using the same saw as mine.

  11. Ray where did you read about Norm Abrams and cancer??? Kevin it is funny I cut the opposite way. Just goes to show everyone is different but the results are the same. What Ray said is possible. Be careful. http://forums.finewoodworking.com/fine-woodworking-knots/general-discussion/sinus-trouble-and-sawdust

  12. I know, some of you folks have seen these before and are probably tired of me posting them but for the folks who may not have seen them, these are 3 of my baskets that I am now making for folks. I enlarged the pattern and will be turning out some bigger ones soon.

  14. This is a clock like I made for my wife about 4 years ago and my grandson's fiancé told me that since they have been living in their own houses for a few years and have everything they need, they are not asking for wedding gifts, However, she did mention to my grandson that she would like one of Grandpa's clocks. ( This is the one she was talking about ) so I made them one. I have been working on it for about a month, due to all the company we have had and finally finished it yesterday, as everyone has left for about 10 days. I have two bells coming for the bell tower and then I will be completely finished. It has several coats of finish on it and in May we will be taking it to Oregon for the wedding. This is the most challenging piece I have ever made, along with the Eiffel Tower I made a few months back. Dick heppnerguy

I have been looking for some Australian content in scroll saw patterns so when I found this one in the pattern library I jumped on it & thanks to Patch for the pattern,I made the backer a little larger to give it a framing effect.

  17. Well temps up to mid 30's and this is the first cutting I've done in a while.. in part, due to feeling blah from a sinus infection.. and another part.. I've been reworking my kitchen cabinets and doing some work inside the house.. I started out with the intention of video the whole cutting.. but.. my phone don't like the cold.. and died doing the first part of this cutting.. so then plug my phone in and then I ran out of storage memory on my phone.. LOL.. time to delete a lot of stuff I suppose.. Not sure you'll be able to get this since the upload in on Facebook on my business page.. you can find that searching FB for KevsKrafts... Maybe the link will work. Probably isn't going to be viewable to those that do not have Facebook.. Cutting is done on my Hawk 226VS Ultra Edit to say: I turn off my overhead light partway through the first part of cutting due to the light interfering with the camera..

  18. The only time I had a problem, and that is what prompted me to buy a good mask, I salvaged a piece of cheap luan plywood out of our motorhome when I was redoing the bedroom in it. I was using the plywood to practice on with the practice patterns from one of my first books. I sat hunkered over my saw for a couple of hours cutting and sucking in all the dust. The next day, I woke up with a severe headache and I was plugged up solid in both nostrils. So, I learned early on that a good mask was a necessity. I also bought a 20 inch box fan and a package of 4 cheap furnace filters. Those two things really helped. Since then, I have put a good dust collection system on my Dewalt and I'm designing one for my EX. The Wen air cleaner helps a lot too.

    3D Chess

You must not have a wife like mine. She won't even let me bring one of my scroll saws into my office/man cave. LOL. Anyway, if I can't find something that is useable, I'm going to build one out of my Makita 0800 portable planer. I've watched a few videos on some folks who have done it and they were very pleased with the outcome. I'm not into big projects anymore so it might just be the answer to my needs.

  20. Kevin, you mentioned "sinus infection". Just a word to the wise. Make sure you aren't suffering from fine sawdust up your nose and giving you an infection. I can't recall whether or not you use a dust mask. I remember Norm Abrahms on New Yankee Workshop got nasal cancer from working around wood dust without a mask. Make sure that what you call sinus infection is really that. Get it checked out if you haven't already.

    BB sourch that you like

I use Sloans anytime I need anything thicker than 1/4. But for my 1/8 and 1/16 I have a local distributor and buy the full sheets.

  28. You're right there Dave as to more uniform color on a large cabinet project. In addition, most people think of the cherry color as the aged cherry color which naturally darkens over time. I had one client many years ago that was highly upset when a new cherry cabinet I made wasn't dark enough. Oh well!

  33. I suppose one could stack cut. But the pattern has a lot of mandatory stack cutting already. Most piece are required to make 4 of them. That sort of leaves stack cutting out for my. I would not want to stack cut 8 at a time. Not something as delicate as this one is. Dick heppnerguy

  36. You got it Bill, It's Beach. Looks a lot like Red oak before I stained it. It cost me the same as red oak so I thought I would try it. I like it because the grain is closed and doesn't split too easy. It is cuts slow because it seems to be pretty hard.

  37. Do you have the tools to cut up 5' x 5' sheets? I can get it by the sheet at local lumberyards, not the big box stores like Lowes and HD. I always have them cut it in half so it is easier for me to transport and handle on my table saw when I get home.

  49. That's beautiful Steve and I can see why your wife loved it. I agree that it looks great cut into the purple heart but - oh my, between all those tiny fret holes, and the density of that wood - I think they statement that it took a lot of hours is no doubt true. I admire your patience and tenancity to do that one.. Love the little animals hidden in the branches. Thanks for showing.

  50. I have a very good friend that likes to decorate her house for all the different occasions, so I made a napkins holder for Easter that she can use when the family comes over for dinner. Still have to apply the finish to it and also I will use the router to round off the edge of the base.
