  1. It was sad to have to cut the big old white oak down in our front yard. We did save the huge burl at the bottom and had it re-sawn into half-inch slaps. I made two special plates for my wife, and daughter to use when they are at the Renn Faire.

  2. I saw this in his email last week and thought I would make one. I enlarged the pattern by 15% to make the basket just under 6" square and 2 1/2" high. The sides are 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and the top and bottom are Mahogany. I used FD Polar #5 blades as I stack cut 4 pieces. Finished with spray Shellac. Getting each layer lined up when gluing was the hardest part. Comments welcome.

  3. I have a friend that has an art studio in Custer State park every summer. He is going through some health issues and I thought this would be a nice gift. The pattern is by Gary Browning and found in his book "Wild West Scroll Saw Portraits". I used 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood 12" square. and back with a black mat. Of course framed at ArtCrafters. I used FD New Spiral #1 blades and finished with spray Polyurethane. Comments welcome.

    Clear Stains ???

Well I will take a shot at it. Many times the terms are used interchangeably but are not the same. First a stain is a product that penetrates wood surfaces and either you add color or highlight the grain. Natural stains are resins and oils mixed that add a hue or warmth of color but also bring out the grain of woods and let the wood show through in its natural state. A clear stain is a clear product that penetrates the wood but adds protection additives such as UV and adds no color whatsoever to the wood, thus clear. You see these terms used alot with deck colors and finishes. Now with that said you have clear and natural finishes also. These are top coats such as polyurethane, lacquers, shelacs. Your waterbased products are your clearest and can add no color unless they have stain mixed in with them. Oil based finishes will always have a yellow tint to them. Used on darker woods you never see it. Now all these finishes can have UV protection as well. Any stain or finish that adds color immediately adds protection from UV.

I've never done this before, I'm quite pleased with it, however, my 'sanding' skills leave a lot to be desired I think. It should have come out 'oval'

  9. I met the fellow who had the Hawk 226VS on Craigslist this morning and long story short, I bought it and brought it home. Now, all I have to do is figure out where to put it. Other than some surface corrosion on a couple of parts, this saw is like new. I can't wait to give it a run but first I must do the clean -up. I am open for any and all advice from you experienced Hawk owners.

A little while ago @heppnerguy did a beautiful cutting of a plane, however, the font that he used amazed me. I couldn't find it anywhere. However, Dick was kind enough to let me know where I could get it from. So today I tried it.

  15. I hope you continue to cut on the Excalibur now that it is set up correctly. I would be really curious, some time down the line, to see if you think the Hawk is worth the extra money. A compare and contrast kind of thing with cost in mind. Good luck

  16. I know I had been forwarned but I chose to go headlong into a project today anyway. I had some scrap douglas fir 2 x 2 material that was left over from another project a couple of years ago. I wanted to do some 3-D word art on it. I ran it through my table saw to make sure it was good and square and measured 1.5" x 1.5". I stuck the pattern on it and put a brand new FD Polar #5 blade in my saw and commenced to cutting. Wow! What a nightmare. That stuff is so hard and very grainy. Long straight grain that runs from one end to the other. So far, I have gone through 3 #5 blades and then I changed to a #7 blade. That did cut better but not for long. I am about 10% done cutting and I think I'm going to fold my tent and go home. I'll wait until I have some decent wood to work with. So, for those of you who might have a bunch of old doug fir scraps laying around, use them for firewood. I wish I had.

    Music sign

Steve Good had a great pattern for Music - Piano that I really liked for my Granddaughter as she is really into music. She does take piano lessons but singing is her thing. Wanted to personalize so I came up with the attached. It is not finished as I will let her decide the colours then either she or Gramma will paint. Got to love Steve.

  18. kevin you are not sounding like a person who really is looking forward to this new saw. I hope things are going to work out for you and there is no problems with it. If you have to do work on it after all said and done I would give them a piece of my mind and could not care who they are. They really sound like a company I do not want to deal with. It is ashame the name will get dragged through the mud if they do not turn things around. Shipping problems now too. I have had tools shipped from various companies by UPS, FedX and never had a problem. Way too many other saws out there.

  19. Customer special order , I cut it and made the backer board and made a frame for the backer board and my wife made the pattern and did the detailed paint job . I would have though the ladie would have wanted the 49ers on it too but no all she wanted was just S F . Used Baltic Birch Plywood and as you can see the wife hand painted it .I installed a picture frame Saw tooth hanger on the rear top where it can be hung on the wall . Any comments welcomed .....

  20. I personally wouldn't go with anything thicker than 1/4". I use 1/4" plywood from Lowes. They have Birch, Oak and Maple. I have not had any problems with it yet. I usually stack cut three. Here is an example of the detail I cut in it with no problems.

  26. Thanks for the advice. Not presently in the market for a new saw but when my Delta bites the dust I will definitely consider a Pegas saw. Also if I get into bowls because of the tilting head. QTE's website says they sold all 60 of their original allotment. Next shipment is June. Looks like they are selling well. bb

  29. I'm hopeful that Pegas will set the standard and produce a premium quality saw that comes set up to run right out of the box.. If they have all their saws ready to cut right out of the box.. I think they could put a hurt on the " other like saws"..

    Dragon Pendant

Found it, downloaded it, printed it (twice....100% and 300%), can't help but wonder what would happen if one were to squish it down to a circle and enlarge it a bit....would make a fairly nice coaster, methinks! Or a trivet if thick enough. Hmmm...

  38. I'm thinking you'll love that Pegas.. I'm really starting to like the Excalibur I bought now that I'm finally getting the thing to run right.. Hoping the Pegas runs great for you all that bought them.. and that nobody has any issues like I've had with my Excalibur.. Hoping Pegas has some strict quality control.. Knowing what I know now about the Excalibur saws and the Pegas.. I would have probably went with one of those instead of the Hawk..

  39. Yeah, I've never had much luck with UPS.. or Fedex for that matter.. Shipped a lot of bigger stuff Greyhound really cheap.. without much issue.. Too bad USPS has a limit of 70 pounds.. I know they all have insurance claims but I've shipped a lot with USPS with very little issues.. Now saying that I just jinxed myself, LOL

    Has anyone a answer

If I want to do something like this, i take a picture of it and email it to myself. Then i can play with the pattern and resize it and such as much as i like. When done I print it out and spray glue it to the wood. Now I will always have the pattern for future use too.

    Has anyone a answer

A photo, touched up and enhanced in Photoshop or a similar program will get you the pattern, but you will need to take a high resolution digital photo with the camera perfectly positioned at right angle to the surface of the pattern for a perfect image with no distortion. The closer you can get to achieving this, the better (life, and photography is never absolutely perfect). Another possibility, if you can do it, is to place this item laying flat on a scanner and scan the image. It will need to be flat against the glass of the scanner to avoid distortion. An image larger than the scanner glass can be scanned in sections to create several partial images, which can then be merged together into one image using Photoshop or a similar program, but with the newer high resolution cameras, it's usually faster and easier to take a photo of it. My Dad was career Air Force, and for the longest time I couldn't read the huge building numbers painted on each building, because they used these fonts. It wasn't until I was about 7 or 8 that it clicked for me. Before that, I thought they were alien symbols!

  48. Once that upper arm is parallel make note of the position of the knob at the back.. many of the Excalibur type saws this will turn on it's own over time.. Most annoying thing about my EX now.... is it untunes itself.. and pretty fast rate for me.. I posted about this and many others said theirs does the same thing.. I'm planning to add a little loctite on the threads then set it where it should be and hopefully it'll take care of that annoyance for me.. Otherwise.. I love the saw now that I've finally got it running good..Hopefully Pegas took note of this issue and redesigned it to stay put better.. Glad to hear you like the saw..
