    Nativity Lichterbogen

Finish gluing the together today. The pattern is from the Holiday 2006 SSW&C magazine, issue 25. I haven't been able to order the lights for it yet. All the 10 count battery powered white wire LED lights are out of stock at the moment. I am on a list to be notified when they come in. This is my second Lichterbogen and I really enjoy making them for some reason. Hope to make a few more before Christmas.

    Towing Company

Tow trucks made from the scrap barrel. All were made with only a sort of pattern--T & E Designs again. Sometimes adjusted to fit the material available. The lavender one has thumb tacks for decorations, most likely never to be played with by small children. They are about 15 inches long by about 7 inches wide and 7" tall. The winches are all turned from firewood, wheels are hole-sawed etc. They are from several species of wood, many unknown to me for variety. Hooks and bumpers are all oak, rest is a lot of WHO KNOWS? Fun to make, and I did get to test drive everyone of them. All are painted with craft store acrylic paint and then a clear light poly over-spray.

    Foxy Knots and Things

I decided to stack cut 4 of each of Alex Fox’s Celtic patterns. I threw most of the scrap cuts in a pile and was kind of blown away by how much there was. Anyway, I cut all of the layers, oiled Layer 1 in Natural Danish, Layer 2 in Dark Walnut Danish, and left Layer 3 raw. I also did Steve Good’s basket that several others have posted pics of theirs. I did mine out of BB and used African Paduck for the top and bottom.

  4. So, I quickly got spoiled by the dust collection I had set up on my Dewalt (using the Scrollnado) and was really missing it with the Pegas with dust being nicely sucked up from the bottom, but blowing around on top... so I just make a quick modification and BAM, now I have 100% dust collection again... Simply ran some clear tubing I had laying around after drilling a hole in the vacuum hose connector to the Pegas saw. Very happy Iggy now.

    Pattern by Steve Good

Steve did this awhile ago. I had to try it so I used a 3/8” piece of cherry. Took several hours but I’m not sure of total time. I liked it so much I hung it on my dining room wall. It’s about 11x14.

  6. One for the Basket Challenge, one because my inner geek (not very far below the surface, actually) thinks dragons are friggin cool. And my daughter, 10 years old, shares that sentiment. A friend of hers showed her some origami a while back, she promptly came home from school and Googled how to fold an origami dragon. Never even made a frog or a ninja star or any of the other usual stuff I did as a kid. Straight up to dragons. My girl. She was excited when I showed her the finished Dragon Pendant....can't wait to see her eyes when she realizes I also printed the same pattern at 300% enlargement, which conveniently fills up a letter-sized sheet of paper....

  8. My Grandson turns one tomorrow. Made this for the cake. I didn't have a wide enough piece of wood, so I glued skewers to the back. Sprayed with a finish called TintIT. It provides a gold shimmer to the wood with a sheer colour. You can spray numerous times to get the tint a little darker. Will definitely be trying for ornaments.

    Auburn Boattail

Always thought the Auburn 851/2 Boattail Speedster was an impressive looking car. The car was not in production for very long but because the design was so unique many reproductions were made in the '70's. I did my pixel pecking on MS paint 3 again and it took several days. The cutting took about 3 days since I only have one good eye until the other one is done next week. (FYI, there is a difference in both contrast and color. Undone eye has a more brownish tint like wearing brown sunglasses) Material was 1/8" BB with 1/4" backer. 17" x 10.5", Shellac/lacquer finish. I'll be holding off on any project until a week after my 2nd cataract eye surgery. Car, airplane, portrait or box, not sure yet.

    3D Chess

It is fragile, of course, but as I handled it, it seems surprisingly sturdy given the thin sides. Also very lightweight. Gently squeezing yielded little or no give. I wouldn't give it to kids to play with, but if handled with care and stored carefully, I think you could play with these. You would need to be sure there were no hidden cracks in the wood that would cause a break, especially along the sides. They would also require a lot of space to store. I wouldn't just throw them in a drawer.

  13. Well, I did a good clean-up on the Hawk yesterday. I took the table off so I could work on it outdoors. It polished up pretty well. I used some 220 paper on it to get the 17 years worth of oxidation off. Then I took my chrome wheel buffer and metal polish to it. Then a couple of coats of Johnson's paste wax. It is really slick now. I brass brushed all the corrosion I could find and gave all the red painted surfaces a wax job. The saw looks like new. It seems to have a vibration in a couple of speed ranges. I haven't loosened the legs yet so it can "settle" into it's relaxed position. I know that is supposed to be important with Hawks. I'd like to hear more about that from you Hawk owners. All-in-all, the saw works/cuts great. I now need to figure out what type of cutting it prefers. I'm still getting used to the blade changing/tensioning system also. If anybody has and words of advice, I'm all ears. Or eyes as the case may be.

  15. I just finished reading a great book by John Grisham called The Rooster Bar and it's about 3 young kids who are going to a less than wonderful law school and they are all up to their eyeballs in debt. It's exactly as you say. Great book too. When the college/university systems got wind that the Feds were going to guarantee the student loans, they opened up the doors and said: "come on in, don't worry about the money, it's going to be just fine".

  16. Finally made my first basket. Found the process to be kinda tedious....dunno why, I can sit there and move blades from hole to hole, holes so tiny that it takes longer to move the blade than it does to shave off the millimeter of excess wood, and not blink an eye. But cutting repetitive patterns? Nearly drove me bonkers. ....okay, nearly drove me MORE bonkers. But I made a basket!!! So....if I make a box, and put the basket INSIDE the box...will I have made a basket-case? ::ducks and runs:: Steve Good pattern:

  17. It was sad to have to cut the big old white oak down in our front yard. We did save the huge burl at the bottom and had it re-sawn into half-inch slaps. I made two special plates for my wife, and daughter to use when they are at the Renn Faire.

  18. I know, some of you folks have seen these before and are probably tired of me posting them but for the folks who may not have seen them, these are 3 of my baskets that I am now making for folks. I enlarged the pattern and will be turning out some bigger ones soon.

  19. I met the fellow who had the Hawk 226VS on Craigslist this morning and long story short, I bought it and brought it home. Now, all I have to do is figure out where to put it. Other than some surface corrosion on a couple of parts, this saw is like new. I can't wait to give it a run but first I must do the clean -up. I am open for any and all advice from you experienced Hawk owners.

  20. There are too many people going to college that have no idea about jobs. One needs to look at a college education in terms of return on investment. Parents need to help kids look at future job openings and pay. Then is it worth the investment in time and dollars for your future job? There are too many college degrees where the pay will be low and very few opportunities. A degree does not guarantee you anything....you have to earn it. I got an engineering degree or two. It was difficult course work and not cheap but long term there were jobs and reasonable pay. If you work hard and get good grades you can improve your opportunities. But college is not the right path for everyone and there are m any high paying jobs that do not need a college education.

    I Love Cats

I love big cats and have scroll several. I really wasn't going to do anymore until I saw one @mikewix posted on Lumberjocks. I had to do it. Not sure I did as well as Mike did, but I gave it a shot. It is 1/2" thick Oak, 12" x 15'. A Charles Hand pattern called "I Love My Jag", pattern # 062. I cut the bulk of it with a 2/0 Pegas spiral, the went back over it with a 3/0 Flying Dutchman New Spiral blade to do some of the finer detain and then over it again with a #3 Pegas MG blade to make sharp corners and points in the detail where needed. I'm thinking I would like to do some staining on it, just not sure I am brave enough.

    3D Chess

That's what I used for the majority of this, a #5 skip tooth—for all of the perimeter and some of the bigger interior areas. I added some tension to the blade too, but maybe not enough. I don't like too much tension—but it may be necessary to keep the blade flatter.

Well, here is a rather unimpressive first test from a piece of soft wood, probably from a stud or something. The little center guy broke off while cutting, and the flat surfaces are not flat due to blade flex. That flexing of the blade also guarantees that opposite sides are not uniform in size and shape. I used three blades for this one: A #5 Super Sharps skip-tooth, and #3 and 2/0 Pegas standard tooth. I will probably try few more times and then give up if I don't get better results.

  35. All of the lectures in college give everyone the idea there are jobs that need a college degree. Its turned into a business. When my wife and I went to state college it was 5,000 a semester. It's now 25,000 a semester. Now everyone is coming out with such debt they can't afford to live even if they have a job, they are paying hundreds of thousands plus interest, plus, plus, their on the line for 30 years. I would guess there are people on this board with kids living with them cause they can't afford to live on their own.Next debt crisis is college loan default cause they can't make the much to pay the high loan and interest. 36. I have multiple higher degrees. Now I get told I'm overqualified. My grandparents came over from Europe and worked with little schooling and worked the trades. We were told to get an education to get ahead, which doesn't mean you get a job when anyone gets out. I worked before college and worked during college, anything from restaurants to a janitor, to wiping peoples backside in nursing homes. Learned a bit from any job and I can't say anything I learned on the job was taught in college. RJF

  43. I saw this in his email last week and thought I would make one. I enlarged the pattern by 15% to make the basket just under 6" square and 2 1/2" high. The sides are 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood and the top and bottom are Mahogany. I used FD Polar #5 blades as I stack cut 4 pieces. Finished with spray Shellac. Getting each layer lined up when gluing was the hardest part. Comments welcome.
