    Wood Duck Award

This one's for Peter @woodduck Scrolling through some photos and I came across this. I made it for my Wife's Primary School as an award for the biggest faux pas . It is handed out to a staff member each month. Started many years ago when at a school concert, one of the teachers squeezed between the podium and the wall and exclaimed, "I'm glad I've got my suck me in Knickers on". Well the mike was on and so was born the "Wood Duck" award. Cheers

  3. I hear ya on the burn Mark's! I ain't able to tell ya how many folks have repeatedly asked if my work is laser cut, or cut with a "computer machine." I've had several folks ask how I can cut get cherry & maple cut without burnin' it, especially in the turns. I simply say back to them a truck driver's response, "I've had lots of practice. " And leave it at that. Several of the pieces I do are perty intricate, & and have several tight corners to make. The Native American pieces with feathers, wolves, cattle, combines & tractors, etc. And I cut my own feathers for the dream catcher's we make. Everyone has their own take on how they get thru each project they take on. It's a matter of experience, learnin' the capabilities of your machine, blade speed, blade type, & wood type & thickness. No two projects are goin to cut the same, no matter how hard ya try to make it work, it won't fly. And for whatever reason, don't let anyone tell ya wood is wood! Because it's not! You can cut two separate pieces out of the same length of board for projects, and they will cut differently & react differently to the blades you're usin. Just my two pennies worth. Sawdust703 (Brad)

I decided to stack cut 4 of each of Alex Fox’s Celtic patterns. I threw most of the scrap cuts in a pile and was kind of blown away by how much there was. Anyway, I cut all of the layers, oiled Layer 1 in Natural Danish, Layer 2 in Dark Walnut Danish, and left Layer 3 raw. I also did Steve Good’s basket that several others have posted pics of theirs. I did mine out of BB and used African Paduck for the top and bottom.

  7. At last month's markets, I had my goodies on my Daughters Stall. She informed me of a customer (Browser) saying to her how much patience I must have to sand all the burn marks of the edges left by the laser cutter. lol I do have patience for some things but nowhere near enough to do that job.

    Getting rid of burn marks

I don't usually have burn marks unless i try to get more time out of my blades. I don't know why I try @ $0.25 each blade. IKE

  13. I have met the nicest of people since I arrived in the Village and today I met another one. I'd seen a gentleman making a bandsaw box on YouTube and thought it was the sweetest thing and I'd like to try and make it. So I found his website and bought a 'download' of 4 patterns. Imagine my disappointment when the box I'd seen him make wasn't on the 'download', I'd bought the wrong one. So I emailed him told him what I'd done and asked if there was anyway I could get the pattern I liked. Well, he emailed me back and explained that the box he had made was in his ''book' not on the 'download' And guess what ??? He emailed me the 8 patterns that are in his book, which includes the one I liked. How amazingly generous was that !!! I'm stunned. There are some lovely scrollsawyers out there in the world and they make the most friendly bunch it's been my priviledge to meet. This gentleman doesn't know me from Adam yet makes such a kind gesture.

  14. A man & wife are looking at my intarsia at the craft show. Wife: "How do you cut the pieces, so they fit so tightly together?" Man: "He does that with a computer." Me: "No, Sir, I cut them with a scroll saw." Man: "That's impossible! No human can cut that precisely!" Me: "Ok" Sigh . . . .

  15. I agree Brad. When I start cutting a project, I may have to try several different blades to get the one I am most comfortable with for that day, that wood, that saw, my mood and how my body is working at that time. Then I may have to change blades during a cut to do something specific in a certain area. Just my way of scrolling.

  16. Skip tooth non reverse blade. Slow saw speed, make sure to have a covering (see John's comment ) . I sometimes use a VERY small amount of mineral oil only on the pattern line for additional lubrication. Do not stop feed with the saw on it will cause edge welding.

  18. College use to be cheap. 1975 a semester was $500 and textbooks RENTED for $7.00. Then gov and college decided it should be based on the business model. College cost rises every year when no one else has any cost of living. It's out of site. Then we are exporting jobs. Ever call software support and try to understand the tech? I'm a full believer in full-time learning and free education. Shop classes should be given in high school. Businesses and medicine have 'Slooooowwwwly' learned that having a cross of fields at a meet is a major improvement. Ever been on a factory line with an engineer that was never at the factory. Did it. Learned from it. Won't state the company, I was the only engineer that would go to the factory line and talk with every worker on every shift on my own time. Suddenly the young engineer knew more than the old ones and the factory production skyrocketed. It was the feedback of the hands-on people that did it. Constant free learning is going to put this country ahead of the rest. RJF

Some very fine cutting. You need to spray glue the scraps and make a wall hanging! That basket is gorgeous!

  20. Finally made my first basket. Found the process to be kinda tedious....dunno why, I can sit there and move blades from hole to hole, holes so tiny that it takes longer to move the blade than it does to shave off the millimeter of excess wood, and not blink an eye. But cutting repetitive patterns? Nearly drove me bonkers. ....okay, nearly drove me MORE bonkers. But I made a basket!!! So....if I make a box, and put the basket INSIDE the box...will I have made a basket-case? ::ducks and runs:: Steve Good pattern:

    Towing Company

Tow trucks made from the scrap barrel. All were made with only a sort of pattern--T & E Designs again. Sometimes adjusted to fit the material available. The lavender one has thumb tacks for decorations, most likely never to be played with by small children. They are about 15 inches long by about 7 inches wide and 7" tall. The winches are all turned from firewood, wheels are hole-sawed etc. They are from several species of wood, many unknown to me for variety. Hooks and bumpers are all oak, rest is a lot of WHO KNOWS? Fun to make, and I did get to test drive everyone of them. All are painted with craft store acrylic paint and then a clear light poly over-spray.

  22. I also think that the location I have it in, in my tiny shop, may have something to do with it. I am cramped in a corner so it feels "weird" to me to be back in a corner perched on a tall stool with my foot waaaay down on the floor. I'll fix all of that. Some way, somehow.

  23. These saws are either a love hate with others.. I hated how high it stood when I got my first one.. I also hated how slow it seemed to cut.. but now that I'm used to it.. I don't like the DeWalt.. too aggressive.. but the EX is way too short for me.. way shorter than the Hawk or DeWalt.. the Dewalt is high as well but I put my foot switch in the lower portion of the stand on the DW so it was comfy to use.. the Hawk doesn't have a spot lower for a foot switch to set on.. I have a cutoff of on of the 6x6 post from when my shop was built.. I set that off to the outside of the stand and put my foot switch on that.. then it's all perfect height.. Hawks cutting style took me forever to get used to.. I was determined to like them so I cut everything on the one for a good 6-9 months I'm guessing it took me a good 4 months of production cutting to really get used to and like the saw.. I wanted to like it because of how simple they are made and easy to work on.. Funny how I changed because I remember complaining a lot about how slow they cut etc etc.. But finding the right blade to use and just getting comfortable sitting at that saw was hard to get used to the change after running the DW for 8 straight years of production cutting.. I can cut about as fast on it as I did on the DW now that I'm used to using it.. maybe faster because tight corners and blade changes are much easier once you get it down... Maintenance is quite a lot faster too LOL.. But a lot of it is just what we're used to using.. and I'm learning that first hand.. They sure have a different style / feel of cutting compared to the short link arm style saws..

    Wood Duck Award

I use to give a primitive Pete award each week for the student that misused the tools or machines. I guess I am glad to be retired now wouldn't be PC to do that now. I would probably be called in and written up with a piece of paper put in my file. Real scary threats(LOL). The file would be too thick for it to fit.

  28. Thx guys I used a polar # 5 (I think) I’ll chk later to make sure. I found it in FD assorted packs I had. It cut perfect super easy. It cut easier than wood. No melting or splinter.I wish I had known I would have made better lines and cut right to them and could been finish. But now I’m just going to trim with spiral pattern bit on the router.

    Birdhouse Day

Yes we precut and drill pilot holes. All the kids do is assemble them with screws. We take the kids into the shop go over how the wood is processed and machine safety. We found a wholesale supplier who donated the cedar. It cost the kids nothing except a couple of hours of fun. We have around 10-12 club members help demo and assemble. They have as much fun as the kids.

  30. I burn cherry almost every time when using the DeWalt.. not sure what it is about that particular saw.. even slowing the speed etc etc.. but I've never burned the wood using the Hawk and Excalibur.. not sure why that is.. Something that I recently started doing a little of is video myself cutting.. then you can review what you're doing.. even watching in slow motion really shows what's going on..

    I Love Cats

I love big cats and have scroll several. I really wasn't going to do anymore until I saw one @mikewix posted on Lumberjocks. I had to do it. Not sure I did as well as Mike did, but I gave it a shot. It is 1/2" thick Oak, 12" x 15'. A Charles Hand pattern called "I Love My Jag", pattern # 062. I cut the bulk of it with a 2/0 Pegas spiral, the went back over it with a 3/0 Flying Dutchman New Spiral blade to do some of the finer detain and then over it again with a #3 Pegas MG blade to make sharp corners and points in the detail where needed. I'm thinking I would like to do some staining on it, just not sure I am brave enough.
