  1. For one week of the last two summers a good friend has taken us Jeeping in the Colorado mountains. I wanted to do something special for him and had been looking for a Jeep pattern when I came across grampa’s @grampa depiction of a Jeep. It was exactly what I’d envisioned but didn’t know where to start. I got rid of the Christmas tree on top and did my own lettering. It’s cut from 1/4” BB. The finish is Watco Danish Oil followed by several spray coats of satin lacquer. I used camouflage fabric for the backer. The fabric was sprayed with the lacquer on the back side and allowed to dry. I then sprayed a heavy coat on the front of the fabric and on the back of the BB and mated them together. It dried so quickly that I didn’t get as good of a bond as I’d hoped, but should be ok. Fitting that I finished this on Vietnam Veterans Day. Gene was my Squad leader and I his Medic in Vietnam. I’ll deliver it to him next week on our way back to Illinois from Arizona. Thanks grampa for your design. Tom

  2. I've been conveying for a week with some retailer.. ( might be Walmart the way they tried bargaining LOL ) They been trying to bargain with me for a lower price since they want to quantity order some of these.. I think it's a wedding shop.. Anyway I wouldn't budge.. was kinda hoping they'd give up and walk.. well they didn't and now I'm the lucky guy to cut 10 of these.. If I can get my Hawk dialed in maybe a good chance to get some hours on the machine..

    Table Stand

Well, I needed a tablet stand and I really didn't like any of the plastic, unnatural looking ones out there, and wanting something more personal I went to my shop to consider the matter. So as I sat in my shop trying to figure out how I could make one out of wood. After a few hours this is what I came up with. The golfer is walnut inlaid into a basswood blank.

  6. Put together a sign pattern that I think captures the importance of all veterans and their contributions to our nation. I cut mine from Ambrosia Maple and salvaged the top layer of the base from the same blank, cutting an improvised layer. Also salvaged the two inner stars I cut out to use and end pieces, and the whole piece was then mounted on a piece of Sapele I had lying around. Remember to check out all the scrap from a project. Sometimes you can use it to dress up the final work. You can download the free pattern from my web page at Real Wood Crafts. Just jog down to the FREE PATTERN page and download the PDF.

  7. These are characters from the TV show Futurama and Star Trek (as seen on futurama). The finished piece measures 15”x19” and consists of multiple layers that establish depth. The characters are all natural wood, no paints or stains used for them; I used ebony, wenge, yellow-heart, saeple, maple, oak and bloodwood. The frame is made of cherry, circuit boards and epoxy, the “tanning” room (based off my own illustration whoop-whoop) is made of airbrushed oak, stained glass, padauk, maple and walnut. This took a little over 100 hours to complete. Build Album: https://imgur.com/a/BdqCG6k Reddit Long Video.mp4

  8. Just finished this one. Did the pattern up a while back, but I wanted to cut it before I posted it. Pattern is now in the Library. I'll probably end up on the couch for this one.

I did some practice cutting text again.. fun project from Sheila Landry's website.. I cut this from 1/8" BB ply stacked three.. then the backers are 1/4" Walnut ply with solid walnut strips in the back to hold all together.. I have a few other patterns of these type plaques they have on their site.. probably take a short break on cutting text though.. and I have to cut the 36 Ford pickup that Jim made a pattern for me anyway.. This measures about 18" tall x about 15 wide if I remember correct.. Cut this on the Hawk 226 Ultra.. ( Pegas MG #3) was cut before getting my new Hawk.. actually cut for a while.. just gluing the backer and assembling took almost as long as the cutting..LOL

  16. Hello all, Since Hurricane Michael decimated my area as well as my house and shop, I've had zero time to do anything other than play general contractor. I've finally got: The wall of my garage rebuilt My garage door re-installed My finishing bench cleared of debris My pegboard re-installed for the finishing bench My tools hung back up in their proper place My storage building emptied and ready to be re-positioned on its foundation My dust collection system re-installed My saw tops (scroll saw and table saw) de-rusted and waxed And FINALLY my finishing table setup and ready for finishing! I was hoping to start cutting again this week, I manage to put a finish on one of my puzzles however and that my friends is a step in the right direction to getting back to the business of learning to scroll... Again LOL It's amazing how much you forget after a period of time. The old adage "if you don't use it, you lose it" is very true. Anyway, thanks for reading and hopefully, I'll be able to contribute more as life gets back to normal - still a long way to go however My house has no flooring, I have no drywall on one of my exterior walls, all my windows need replacing as well as my front door, I have 3 rental units that still have no renters due to the damage - but aside from that.... LMAO all is well!

  20. octoolguy: Speaking of "cents", am I the only person who stills bends down to pick up pennies? ___________________________________ Nope. I refuse to spend any I get in change and I pick up any I find. When I go biking or walking, I always tantalize the kids who see me picking up coins almost in front of them. "What chew doin' that fer, mistah? Why they ain't worth nuthin' !" A penny saved is a penny I didn't have to work for (and I'm retired, so that's a hard thing.) On average I probably roll and bank about 7 rolls a month. Good for the kitty to pay for project incidentals.

  24. I always seem to think I'm far enough out from under the saw to stand back up... lets just say the underside of that saw is just as hard as the top side.. much harder than my head.. Still hasn't knocked any sense into me.. but that's okay.. I wouldn't be the same if I had some sense..

  29. Who's pattern is that?? I would be bored after 2 of them. It is not a difficult pattern. Not sure I would be playing around with a new saw for something like that. Use that time on something where there is no timetable. Now add some wedding napkin holders and you have a real winner and you will not be able to keep in stock.

  30. OK - First - I didn't color the wood. The wood is from some left over strips of SpectraPly blocks, that I had used on another project. SpectraPly comes from Cousineau Wood Products -- https://www.cwp-usa.com/collections/spectraply-blanks The process is called Bowl-from-a-Board. I made the board from the SpectraPly strips, then used my scroll saw to cut the rings out of it. The rings were about 5/8" thick and I cut at a 45 degree angle. When I was done shaping the bowl, the wall of the bowl was about 3/8" at the base - tapering out to 1/8" at the lip. The base and lip are made of maple. The lip ring was made using segmented ring methods. If you are patient, and have the right sanders, you can shape the bowl with just the sanders. I cheated and used my lathe to spin the bowl while I worked. See Carole Rothman's youtubes and articles on how to cut bowls with a scroll saw and shape them with sanders. Here is the only side picture I have. The bowl sold so I can't take any more.

  31. Glad you got the job. I have done similar things with flower shops. They try to talk you down then give in at times. I think it takes a while for it to sink in how much work goes into each piece. Mine started out with just Angels and has grown from there. It can be very inconvenient at times as they don't like to wait. When you have several custom orders waiting to be filled is when they like to call and say I need them by tomorrow . It's all part of growing though. Wish you the best on this endeavor as it could lead to other things.

I decided to stack cut 4 of each of Alex Fox’s Celtic patterns. I threw most of the scrap cuts in a pile and was kind of blown away by how much there was. Anyway, I cut all of the layers, oiled Layer 1 in Natural Danish, Layer 2 in Dark Walnut Danish, and left Layer 3 raw. I also did Steve Good’s basket that several others have posted pics of theirs. I did mine out of BB and used African Paduck for the top and bottom.

God has made a way for me to come out on top but it takes a lot patience and a silent tongue to win here with people problems. Sounds like your on the up an up with your problems too.

  38. Believe it or not Bob, yes - HOWEVER, what is occurring here is the insurance company is willing to pay for my repairs, but the lender that holds my mortgage DiTech is NOT willing to forward the funds they've already been paid by the insurance company! I've signed a formal complaint with the Attorney General of Florida regarding the lies, deceit and lack of "doing business in good faith". I received an acknowledgement today from the Attorney General they have sent my complaint to DiTech and are DEMANDING a written response to my accusations! So we'll see how it goes - unfortunately, I've had to use my retirement funds to fund the repairs to my house and am now out of money. But, it's all good, because they're not going to win this war.. I am!

  45. I met the fellow who had the Hawk 226VS on Craigslist this morning and long story short, I bought it and brought it home. Now, all I have to do is figure out where to put it. Other than some surface corrosion on a couple of parts, this saw is like new. I can't wait to give it a run but first I must do the clean -up. I am open for any and all advice from you experienced Hawk owners.
