Well after talking to Dick( Hepenguy) he talked me into doing this clock tower which I thought was way beyond my scrolling talent. I would of never have been able to do this without all his help and guidance. I couldn't even get started with the pattern, it was so confusing. WE sent a lot of emails and we also talked on the phone. He gave me a lot of tips. I just want to give a big shoutout to Dick and for all his help in getting me to finish this. I haven't figured out how i'm going to put a finish on this or what type of finish I should do. Any tips would sure help. There's a lot of nooks and cranies. Thanks again Dick.14 points

Redesigned for cutting in Cherry. Success!
heppnerguy and 11 others reacted to Blaughn for a topic
I made a plaque similar to this and cut in it Jatoba (AKA Brazilian Cherry). That was the only wood strong enough to cut without losing the cut-outs. I succeeded on the first attempt. I failed on the next 2 attempts and wore out 2 band saw blades re-sawing the Jatoba. I quit scrolling for months out of frustration. I redesigned the plaque with larger letters and cut it in real cherry. I made it through, on the first try, using the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #1 blades. I am pumped!! This plaque is 15.5 x 9.5. I will finish it with Watco Danish Oil. Bruce12 points -
taking ownership of my own control room
tomsteve and 6 others reacted to savethebeer for a topic
Among the many many jobs I do in work is controlling this Aviation Fire Simulator, AKA The Hulk, as in Jolly Green Hulk. It has an elevated Control Room to oversee the whole area. For reasons that I can't explain this room has been called The Fuse Box for years but I decided to give it a more personal title, so I am going to hang the framed plaque in it. The top half is the wording that I tried to do in Dick's Umbra-normal. Computer screen looks great and then I press print. What gets printed is the font in the plaque. I have tried 3 different printers but have no luck so far. The second part is based on the first photo. I used GIMP, but used desaturate instead of curves, then artistic and phototcopy as normal. The frame I had spare is 16 inch by 13 inch, so I used two smaller pieces of 6mm BB. it has BLO as a finish.7 points -
More Footy Plaques.
MTCowpoke22 and 6 others reacted to wombatie for a topic
I have a rather large order for footy plaques but there is no hurry so I can do other things in between. These have taken a while to do because it was either too hot in the garage to cut or too windy outside to spray. The wet weather will be here soon so that will be another hurdle to cross. The lettering is 3mm ply all stack cut with several put away for any further orders and the backs are 3/4" pine. Marg Magpies - Black and White. Tigers - Black and Yellow. Cat and Paint Pony for Grand-daughters birthday presents
frankorona and 5 others reacted to jbrowning for a topic
Well I was finally able to get back into my garage today to work at the scroll saw since Jan. I have been busy woodburning, sanding and staining about 150 bases for a friend of mine. Man am I glad that is done. So these were my first two projects that I started and finished today. The cat was the first one just to get back into the scroll saw then I tried the Paint Pony. I'm very happy with the way they turned out. Thanks for looking and sorry for being away so long. Jim6 points -

I made this picture in honor of April the giraffe at the Animal Adventure Park in New York, who just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy about a week ago. I watched the birth on live cam. I have done this pattern by @alexfox, before and it is a real treat to cut. There are not difficult or fragile areas, although it may look like their would be. I really recommend this pattern to anyone wanting to try their first picture cut. Alex has a sea turtle one also that is very impressive, a little more difficult, but a pleasure to cut. I did it a little different than any I have done before. I stained the backer behind the giraffe with a stain called Nutmeg, painted the eye area black. You can't see it without really looking closely, but I painted the backer behind the leaves a light green. The green doesn't show up as much as I hoped, but I had to try it. The frame is cherry with Watco Tung Oil finish. The picture is cut in 1/2" Basswood. I guess this is going to another April fan, that is a co-worker of my Daughter.4 points

I decided to jump on the UMBRA font bandwagon - can't let you guys have all the fun These letters are 1.5" high - I slowed down the speed of my saw quite a bit after I cut a few letters By slowing down the speed, I had much better control and the letters were coming out a lot better 7"x 9.75" There's 131 HOLES I have to drill then cut....piece of cake....LOL Didn't plan the size out too good - I'll correct it on the next one I can't help but think about Dick(@Heppnerguy) the driver of the bandwagon and Brenda(@Foxfold) first passenger while I'm working on this plaque FOR FONT REASONS ONLY Fab44 points -
These are characters from the TV show Futurama and Star Trek (as seen on futurama). The finished piece measures 15”x19” and consists of multiple layers that establish depth. The characters are all natural wood, no paints or stains used for them; I used ebony, wenge, yellow-heart, saeple, maple, oak and bloodwood. The frame is made of cherry, circuit boards and epoxy, the “tanning” room (based off my own illustration whoop-whoop) is made of airbrushed oak, stained glass, padauk, maple and walnut. This took a little over 100 hours to complete. Build Album: https://imgur.com/a/BdqCG6k Reddit Long Video.mp43 points

Flying Over Mountains
Roberta Moreton and one other reacted to Heli_av8tor for a topic
For one week of the last two summers a good friend has taken us Jeeping in the Colorado mountains. I wanted to do something special for him and had been looking for a Jeep pattern when I came across grampa’s @grampa depiction of a Jeep. It was exactly what I’d envisioned but didn’t know where to start. I got rid of the Christmas tree on top and did my own lettering. It’s cut from 1/4” BB. The finish is Watco Danish Oil followed by several spray coats of satin lacquer. I used camouflage fabric for the backer. The fabric was sprayed with the lacquer on the back side and allowed to dry. I then sprayed a heavy coat on the front of the fabric and on the back of the BB and mated them together. It dried so quickly that I didn’t get as good of a bond as I’d hoped, but should be ok. Fitting that I finished this on Vietnam Veterans Day. Gene was my Squad leader and I his Medic in Vietnam. I’ll deliver it to him next week on our way back to Illinois from Arizona. Thanks grampa for your design. Tom2 points -
American Veterans: Soul of the Nation Table Sign
Scrolling Steve and one other reacted to baggetta for a topic
Put together a sign pattern that I think captures the importance of all veterans and their contributions to our nation. I cut mine from Ambrosia Maple and salvaged the top layer of the base from the same blank, cutting an improvised layer. Also salvaged the two inner stars I cut out to use and end pieces, and the whole piece was then mounted on a piece of Sapele I had lying around. Remember to check out all the scrap from a project. Sometimes you can use it to dress up the final work. You can download the free pattern from my web page at Real Wood Crafts. Just jog down to the FREE PATTERN page and download the PDF.2 points -
The oscillating spindle sander is a great tool. I use mine a lot when doing intarsia. I bought the Jet because it has a 1/4 inch spindle and I also wanted the tilting table. Great for doing Scrollsaw bowls.2 points

Re-introduction - Hi there LOL
John B reacted to new2woodwrk for a topic
Hello all, Since Hurricane Michael decimated my area as well as my house and shop, I've had zero time to do anything other than play general contractor. I've finally got: The wall of my garage rebuilt My garage door re-installed My finishing bench cleared of debris My pegboard re-installed for the finishing bench My tools hung back up in their proper place My storage building emptied and ready to be re-positioned on its foundation My dust collection system re-installed My saw tops (scroll saw and table saw) de-rusted and waxed And FINALLY my finishing table setup and ready for finishing! I was hoping to start cutting again this week, I manage to put a finish on one of my puzzles however and that my friends is a step in the right direction to getting back to the business of learning to scroll... Again LOL It's amazing how much you forget after a period of time. The old adage "if you don't use it, you lose it" is very true. Anyway, thanks for reading and hopefully, I'll be able to contribute more as life gets back to normal - still a long way to go however My house has no flooring, I have no drywall on one of my exterior walls, all my windows need replacing as well as my front door, I have 3 rental units that still have no renters due to the damage - but aside from that.... LMAO all is well!1 point -
Good point JT. When I read oscillating I immediately thought spindle sander as it appears some of the others did also. To me the hand held sander is a orbital, as in random orbital. I guess Rockytime needs to clarify. If it is an RO My wife blessed me with a Festool ETS EC 125-3 for Christmas a couple of years ago. I had suggested the $99 special they had going on back then. But they were sold out. I absolutely love it but they are crazy with their prices.1 point

Wonder How Long This Will Take
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
Rolf everyone has their preferences when it comes to what materials they like to work with for whatever reasons they choose. But what I am pointing out is there are ways around finishing woods if that is one of the reasons. Now you mentioned humidity change cause a disaster. what to say the same thing would not happen with another wood species?? Can not force someone to like the looks of wood grain and if people choose to not wear safety equipment when working in the shop, can't fix stupid as they say. But you are correct everyone's tastes are different. I was just jabbing Kevin in a friendly manner. I mean nothing by it. His work is outstanding.1 point -
My Try At Dicks Clock Tower.

Wonderful piece of art, Ralph. Dick is a great coach for sure. He always has so much enthusiasm. You did a beautiful job on it. I also have that pattern, have had it about 4 years or more. Maybe this year..... Let's see, we now have "Dick's font" and "Dick's clock". Hope he doesn't get the big head and not speaking to little old me anymore.1 point -
Jt you do take a different spin on things. I cut wood that appeals to me. If smell were the only reason for not cutting oak I would not be doing much cutting at all. I think it was Sycamore that smelled like cow dung, walnut has a very sour aroma, mulberry has a nice sweet aroma. Spanish cedar one of my favorites leaves a nasty bitter taste in my mouth. ( that was before I got my dust under control) Baltic birch ply actually makes me a bit nauseous, so I always wore a half mask when cutting it. Visually I like red oak for furniture and flooring. For fretwork I feel the grain detracts from the details. JMO. I have also watched a magnificent highly detailed fretwork basket cut in red oak (1/4") literally self destruct because of a huge humidity change. That was when I did a presentation on woodworking at one of the FC open houses. So Jt feel free to corner the Oak market, I am sure that your beautiful work sells very well.1 point

Some Recent Projects I have done
amazingkevin reacted to meflick for a topic
Here are some recent projects that I have been working on. Some others still in the works. First one is an Intarsia piece. It is a JGR pattern. I left the star hanging off the tip off. I used Aspen and blue pine as I recall. Then this one is also one I just added to the scroll saw challenge for boxes so you may see it twice. The directions and the patterns for it came from the staff of Woodworker's Journal - Keepsake Box from Aug. 20, 2014 and was found here: http://www.woodworkersjournal.com/keepsake-box-project/ I used poplar because I had plenty of that on hand and THEN read that it is not a good wood for staining. (It's grain pattern tends to absorb unevenly.) I had it because that is what I use when I am cutting out Iggy/Harvey's animal puzzles and I don't "stain" those. I did apply a pre-stain wood conditioner. Then applied American Chestnut wood stain about 3 or 4 cuts. Then added a shellac finish. It turned out ok I think but next time will not use poplar when I want to stain. I am still trying to decide on what I want to put as far as a handle (if at all) and whether I want to flock the inside of the box, and if so, what color. Then, these are cell phone holders that I got the patterns from scroller online here: http://www.scrolleronline.com These still don't have a finish on them but I am going to be a clear coat poly on them. and finally, these are the latest "band saw boxes" that I have created from David Picciuto's book (I previously shared the first two.)1 point -

Give Your Mom A Call
amazingkevin reacted to baggetta for a topic
This is a phrase used often in many families, I'm sure. It goes back to the days when the phone was just a simple contraption sitting on the end table. I put this into wood by using a blank I made from various woods:Torrified Maple, Red Oak, and Cherry. You can make good use of your scrap wood by saving all small cut off pieces and then gluing them together in strips to make some nice looking blanks for scroll saw cutting. This board came out at about 1/4" thick. Of course I salvaged the top piece of the blank to convert into the top of the base. I used a piece of plain ol' pine for the bottom. You can of course just use a single blank to cut this just as effectively, but don't be afraid to use your imagination when the opportunity presents itself. You can download the pattern if you'd like to cut it, at my site Real Wood Crafts. Just scroll down to the FREE PATTERNS page.1 point -

I know it is $100 more but the Rigid Oscillating belt and drum sander is a fantastic addition to the shop. If you register it has a lifetime warranty. I had one for about 6 years and when I moved the movers tightened the top knob and it would not budge. I took it in for repair and 3 weeks later they sent me another. I switch between belt and drum all the time.1 point -

Thanks for the comments. I do use the saw a lot. I've adjusted the arm but to no avail. Still gives me a problem. I do have a set of the new Pegas clamps and plan on installing when I get the most out of what I've got. Over the 8 or 9 years that I've had the saw I think I changed the tension knob assemble about 4 times. Thanks for the comments on the video. I'm new at making videos, but I hope to get better with practice. One thing I can't stand in most videos is the loud music that often accompanies the work being demonstrated. Thanks again for your input. I appreciate it. Al B.1 point
