    Another Inlay.

Been really busy trying to get things finished up for the Denton, TX Arts and Jazz Festival April 26th - 28th. I found this clip art on Etsy. I made the plaque out of beech and walnut.

    The dog Koda

A very big thank you to grandpa Paul. The pattern he made was great and the birthday boy ( the boy) loved it

  4. Well after talking to Dick( Hepenguy) he talked me into doing this clock tower which I thought was way beyond my scrolling talent. I would of never have been able to do this without all his help and guidance. I couldn't even get started with the pattern, it was so confusing. WE sent a lot of emails and we also talked on the phone. He gave me a lot of tips. I just want to give a big shoutout to Dick and for all his help in getting me to finish this. I haven't figured out how i'm going to put a finish on this or what type of finish I should do. Any tips would sure help. There's a lot of nooks and cranies. Thanks again Dick.

    In Honor of April

I made this picture in honor of April the giraffe at the Animal Adventure Park in New York, who just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy about a week ago. I watched the birth on live cam. I have done this pattern by @alexfox, before and it is a real treat to cut. There are not difficult or fragile areas, although it may look like their would be. I really recommend this pattern to anyone wanting to try their first picture cut. Alex has a sea turtle one also that is very impressive, a little more difficult, but a pleasure to cut. I did it a little different than any I have done before. I stained the backer behind the giraffe with a stain called Nutmeg, painted the eye area black. You can't see it without really looking closely, but I painted the backer behind the leaves a light green. The green doesn't show up as much as I hoped, but I had to try it. The frame is cherry with Watco Tung Oil finish. The picture is cut in 1/2" Basswood. I guess this is going to another April fan, that is a co-worker of my Daughter.

  6. Thank you for all the responses. I was not speaking of orbital sanders but vertical spindle oscillating sanders. Rigid appears to get the vote. I need the smallest footprint I can find. Not sure if I will invest in one due to lack of space and real need. I've also considered the sanding spindles for the drill press. However without the oscillating feature it becomes just straight line sanding. It is still under advisement.

  7. I have a rather large order for footy plaques but there is no hurry so I can do other things in between. These have taken a while to do because it was either too hot in the garage to cut or too windy outside to spray. The wet weather will be here soon so that will be another hurdle to cross. The lettering is 3mm ply all stack cut with several put away for any further orders and the backs are 3/4" pine. Marg Magpies - Black and White. Tigers - Black and Yellow. Hawks - Brown and Yellow.

  9. edge gluing, between not having a really large empty surface to do it on, the multiple pipe clamps, the cauls, the quick clamps, and ... drove me batty Saw this and gambled, it works! 4 Way Pressure Clamp For Clamping Panels https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073QSF8JR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Heavy duty steel clamps, and the rest of it is also quality goods. I spit a 2x4 to use as the cauls and mounted the notched tracks. I put blue painters tape on the cauls to prevent them from being glued to the panel, that worked, I am wondering if wax paper would have been better? the tape did stick to the panel in one spot. And my new jointer works great too (maybe its me but I think it ought to be called an edger instead) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Q0I8YU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 EDIT: I figure someone will ask, that is a 20"wide x 24" panel

  10. The glue up I showed is 1/2 and I had to add a 1/8 piece of ply under one caul on top. That was so that the part that presses on the edge of the boards would center

  11. Wonderful piece of art, Ralph. Dick is a great coach for sure. He always has so much enthusiasm. You did a beautiful job on it. I also have that pattern, have had it about 4 years or more. Maybe this year..... Let's see, we now have "Dick's font" and "Dick's clock". Hope he doesn't get the big head and not speaking to little old me anymore.

  12. I like those clamps, but wow, I'd have to do a lot of glue ups to justify the cost. You would have buy at least two sets. Then again, maybe if I had them I would to more glue ups... Maybe I can place some hints to my kids. They are always wanting to know what I want at Christmas. I always give the good answer, "just to spend time with my kids". Next your I will say "stay home but send me a set of those clamps"!!

    Hold Down Foot

How many here use the hold down foot supplied with the saw when new?? How many have taken it off all together??? How many still have it on but do not use it and use it to hold up an air hose or something else???

  16. I made a plaque similar to this and cut in it Jatoba (AKA Brazilian Cherry). That was the only wood strong enough to cut without losing the cut-outs. I succeeded on the first attempt. I failed on the next 2 attempts and wore out 2 band saw blades re-sawing the Jatoba. I quit scrolling for months out of frustration. I redesigned the plaque with larger letters and cut it in real cherry. I made it through, on the first try, using the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #1 blades. I am pumped!! This plaque is 15.5 x 9.5. I will finish it with Watco Danish Oil. Bruce

Dave I remember when you first logged onto The Village. You were really new at scrolling, as I remember but you always spent the time and effort to do it right. You certainly have not changed your attitude about making that effort with every piece, and it really has shown through time. You have come from a rookie to a master of all you do. Your work has quickly transformed into some of the nicest work in The Village. It is always a pleasure to see your posts, as you finish yet another. I am awed by your accomplishment and dedication and you are an inspiration to many scrollers, now. That is a beautiful piece and I really wonder what it is that you are going to do next. I think you have done about everything there is but just when I get thinking like that, you come up with still another thing. So glad you are on our web site. It is a pleasure to have such a wonderful member of our world wide family as you. Dick heppnerguy

  19. I know this topic is wavering off course but if anyone watches This Old House, there is a push on the show to incorporate apprentices in the show. They make it a point to show and mention there is a shortage of skilled labor in the market these days. Yes computer skills are great but still need those hands on people that can build and fix things. Again the fast pace world we have become people do not want to take time to learn simple skills. Just pick a phone up and they call someone.

    Dust Mask??

My next truck will be diesel.. I like most all of them.. but since I know so much about the Cummins trucks.. I'll most likely go with something with a cummins.. My brother-in-law has a 1994 dodge 2 wheel drive 5 speed manual with the cummins.. all modded up with twin turbos.. I won't bore you with motor details but this thing pushes 800-900hp... still can be daily driven.. pulls his camper and whatever he needs.. still gets 24mpg if he's not in the throttle all the time, LOL Took this big 8000 pound truck down the 1/4 mile track pulling 15 seconds but couldn't hook the pavement.. tried taking off in 3rd gear which only bogged the turbos.. once the turbos lit.. had to let out of it got squirrely on him right about 80mph.. LOL things a crazy torque monster.. Just ran street tires.. he's got some slicks and is going back to the track this summer..

  23. I made a mix of the beeswax also and use it on some turnings. Kevin how big is this cross.? I must have missed it somewhere. I do like beautiful grain, I used Bocote for one of the projects I did for FC. It is a very dense wood. All wood moves but some woods grain structure really weakens it. Has anyone ever seen or used any quarter sawn Red Oak. ?

    Dust Mask??

Kevin - I have that same mask, but haven't had the need to think I need to replace the straps yet. Since they are sort of wide - you could probably get some wide elastic and replace as needed. You might be able to find it in a local Walmart if they have a sewing area or check your local fabric stores. You can probably also find it online. I just measured my straps, they are about 3/4" wide so I would look for 3/4" for 1" wide. Probably need to stay close to the 3/4" width if you want to use the clips head rest that is on the present straps. Here's one type to look for in your local stores. (This one says its 1 1/2" wide but they sell all widths.) I would recommend the non-roll type so that it doesn't "roll up" from the edges. You can also find online at Amazon or online fabric and craft stores. Amazon choices though seem to be a little more "bulk" buys so depends on how often you feel the need to change out the straps.

  26. 1/2 cup shaved beeswax packed into the measuring cup to a 16oz bottle of mineral oil.. Mix it on the stove but be sure to use a thermometer that clips on the pan and about 1/4 inch above the bottom of the pan.... flash point is 150F don't let it get that hot, LOL I typically heat it up to right about 140-145 ish and turn off the burner.. stir with a spoon and it'll usually all melt and mix together.. Then pour into your containers.. I apply this mix with flux brushes or acid brushes. Maybe I should do a video on this. Hmm.. Have so many video ideas but so little desire to set up camera, LOL

    Dust Mask??

I am using the GVS Elipse Half Mask respirator with Hespa P100 filters. I purchased from Ebay $ 26.95 and free shipping, but amazon has it as well. It works really well, I like it because it breathes both ways and does not get hot like some of the masks. The only thing I found it sits close to my eyes on the nose piece and I have to tilt my head a little different when scrolling. probably just my big head. I believe this might be the same mask Steve Good was using. grizz

  38. Rolf everyone has their preferences when it comes to what materials they like to work with for whatever reasons they choose. But what I am pointing out is there are ways around finishing woods if that is one of the reasons. Now you mentioned humidity change cause a disaster. what to say the same thing would not happen with another wood species?? Can not force someone to like the looks of wood grain and if people choose to not wear safety equipment when working in the shop, can't fix stupid as they say. But you are correct everyone's tastes are different. I was just jabbing Kevin in a friendly manner. I mean nothing by it. His work is outstanding.

  39. These are characters from the TV show Futurama and Star Trek (as seen on futurama). The finished piece measures 15”x19” and consists of multiple layers that establish depth. The characters are all natural wood, no paints or stains used for them; I used ebony, wenge, yellow-heart, saeple, maple, oak and bloodwood. The frame is made of cherry, circuit boards and epoxy, the “tanning” room (based off my own illustration whoop-whoop) is made of airbrushed oak, stained glass, padauk, maple and walnut. This took a little over 100 hours to complete. Build Album: https://imgur.com/a/BdqCG6k Reddit Long Video.mp4

  48. It is good to know there is this dislike for oak. I will have to stop showing my projects here because many people hate looking at oak and being that is about all I use and cut no sense showing any more projects done in oak. Or maybe what I will do is include a disclaimer when I show something. I can include this warning " graphic photos!!! oak haters do not look" I love working and looking at all woods. I did learn something from this thread though.

  49. Believe or not I loved going to school everyday for 40yrs. It was a great job. I taught industrial arts and engineering and it was something different everyday. To teach something you enjoy as a hobby adds to the pleasure. The biggest challenge to teaching is not the students it's the administration and parents lack of support.
