had an order
jollyred and 9 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I had a friend of a friend contact me about custom making a sign for their friend who was moving into a new home. It is in the desert and they were interested in making a desert plaque for them. I had her pick a basic design from a couple of links I sent to her and then I added the names and saying she wanted on it. I decided to raise the middle of the plaque to add some interest so I cut it at 4 degrees and painted it and glued it in place. Afterwards I added the basic design and finished it. I used 1/4 inch BB Ply and cut it with #3 reverse tooth Pegas Blade. I mailed it to her today and she replied that she was very excited about it. I hope that she is when she sees it. I liked it myself, but that part really doesn't matter, except to me. Dick heppnerguy10 points -

My Free pattern for today is aimed at an important occupation. Lots of plumbers out there who might enjoy this sign. I cut mine from plain ol' pine, but to dress it up a bit I cut an improvised base of cherry. Fairly easy to cut, so take the plunge. The pattern is available in PDF on my FREE PATTERN page3 points

Picked up 2 litres of Automotive acrylic gloss the other day. I have used it before and you can get an very glossy finish. It's been awhile though because the last lacquer I bought was a 20 litre drum of 30% gloss and after thinning it 50% you can see that it goes along way. I'm getting bored with it so time to spice things up a bit. I have coated 2 frames and I had forgotten how nice gloss looks. I used it a lot to top coat over acrylic paint when I used to make toys. Will post pics when I get some more stuff finished.2 points

taking ownership of my own control room
tomsteve and one other reacted to savethebeer for a topic
Among the many many jobs I do in work is controlling this Aviation Fire Simulator, AKA The Hulk, as in Jolly Green Hulk. It has an elevated Control Room to oversee the whole area. For reasons that I can't explain this room has been called The Fuse Box for years but I decided to give it a more personal title, so I am going to hang the framed plaque in it. The top half is the wording that I tried to do in Dick's Umbra-normal. Computer screen looks great and then I press print. What gets printed is the font in the plaque. I have tried 3 different printers but have no luck so far. The second part is based on the first photo. I used GIMP, but used desaturate instead of curves, then artistic and phototcopy as normal. The frame I had spare is 16 inch by 13 inch, so I used two smaller pieces of 6mm BB. it has BLO as a finish.2 points -
Melanie, Thank you for posting this.. I happen to of had a honey-do list when I got up which involved running to Walmart... anyway.. Walmart had these.. I bought the larger roll they had.. just to make sure I have enough.. price was $3.48.. I picked up the 3/4" as the 1" looked like it could be too wide.. though the 3/4 looked maybe a bit narrow.. I haven't changed it yet and probably wont until later.. I've gotta get out and do some cutting.. Just wanted to update that I found the stuff.. Of coarse... after I did order a new mask from eBay for $20, LOL I'll update once I put this on and see how it works out..2 points

I use a 3M respirator for the "dirty" jobs ( Rated for painting in a body shop ) . Beyond that I use a medical exam mask for general purpose work.2 points -
I have had that problem and still do to a minor degree. Part number (64) on the schematic that Jim posted is in two sections on my machine with and adjustment bolt holding the two together. By moving the bolt you can elongate or shorten the top arm. The important thing is to make sure that when it is adjusted the bolts must be tightened so there is no flex in the joint. flex allows the top rocker arm to move like in video.2 points

Hold Down Foot

Now Kevin you used terms in here that are not allowed any more in today's society . You can be called out by the politically correct police. We must not harm in any way anyone's feelings. People are very sensitive these days. A whole new world. But you are probably right. Many examples of this all around us. I'm guessing but, I bet they are required to have it on there when sold new.. Probably some idiot scratched their finger or the wood started bouncing and pinched their finger.. and thus.. a safety device was invented and required to be on any new machine.. Now.. to me it's more of a safety hazard on there than off.. but that's just me... gotta remember.. they have some real dumb people in this world.. since they now have to mark coffee cups with Caution Hot now days.. warning labels and caution signs all over the place these days.. Surprised they don't have a warning to not change the tire on a car while it's in motion, LOL2 points -

Maybe we could send them to a specific place and they can reuse them for new saws. They all are from reading here brand new. They keep recycling them they could skip making that piece.2 points -
Mine are in a box somewhere. I actually like having the board slap up and down ocassionally to keep me awake.2 points

I really wished I had the room for the one you have. If my shop were bigger I'd like my DC routed to every machine. I can't so I have to use the one extra hose and move it around. Then I have to pull my scroll saw away from the corner to get at the CHEAP and CRAPPY plastic gates I got from WoodCraft. Hence the wheels on my saw.2 points

Yeah, I got probably 3 years on this.. I've replaced the filters about 2 times a year but in between I take them out and use my air hose to blow the dust backwards out of the filters as best I can..2 points

Hold Down Foot

When I first started scrolling, I used the hold down on my Craftsman saw. That thing vibrated enough to make the hold down almost a necessity. Besides, I really didn't know any better. As I got better at cutting, I realized it was more hindrance than help, so I took it off. Never used the one on my 2nd saw, DeWalt or my current saw, EX-21.2 points -

Well after talking to Dick( Hepenguy) he talked me into doing this clock tower which I thought was way beyond my scrolling talent. I would of never have been able to do this without all his help and guidance. I couldn't even get started with the pattern, it was so confusing. WE sent a lot of emails and we also talked on the phone. He gave me a lot of tips. I just want to give a big shoutout to Dick and for all his help in getting me to finish this. I haven't figured out how i'm going to put a finish on this or what type of finish I should do. Any tips would sure help. There's a lot of nooks and cranies. Thanks again Dick.1 point

Jeff, I think they are outstanding mate. I saw the two nipper walking along and thought that's nice, but the next 2, in my opinion, are stunners. The horse is nice to, but the concentration on the little fellows face as he is about to drive that nail is fantastic.1 point -

Les, if you don't intend to use it much, drums on the drill press do the job. All you have to do is alter the hight of the table to use a fresh piece of paper. I used this method for years then built a dedicated drum sander before eventually purchasing an oscillating one. The oscillations are not much, probably only about 1/2" so there is not much advantage over a drum on the drill press. Just my findings.1 point

Flying Over Mountains

For one week of the last two summers a good friend has taken us Jeeping in the Colorado mountains. I wanted to do something special for him and had been looking for a Jeep pattern when I came across grampa’s @grampa depiction of a Jeep. It was exactly what I’d envisioned but didn’t know where to start. I got rid of the Christmas tree on top and did my own lettering. It’s cut from 1/4” BB. The finish is Watco Danish Oil followed by several spray coats of satin lacquer. I used camouflage fabric for the backer. The fabric was sprayed with the lacquer on the back side and allowed to dry. I then sprayed a heavy coat on the front of the fabric and on the back of the BB and mated them together. It dried so quickly that I didn’t get as good of a bond as I’d hoped, but should be ok. Fitting that I finished this on Vietnam Veterans Day. Gene was my Squad leader and I his Medic in Vietnam. I’ll deliver it to him next week on our way back to Illinois from Arizona. Thanks grampa for your design. Tom1 point -

My Try At Dicks Clock Tower.
TripleJScroller reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Well, the credit does not belong to me. I did help him to understand a few things that were a little confusing with the pattern, but Ralph did all the great work. I am so proud of him as many have the pattern, which has been on the market for years, and hesitate to give it a go. That is really understandable to me, as I too have a lot of patterns that I really want to cut but have not yet gotten around to doing them. I was glad that I was able to encourage Ralph and give him a few tips along the way, but once he got underway, I knew there was no turning back. It is the patterns with a lot of fret work that looks almost impossible to cut, but it also those patterns that make non scrollers wonder how it is possible to even do it at all. Once someone pushes their envelope and spends the time to cut a pattern like this clock, they come out learning they can cut about anything out there, that they see. It also makes it possible to have the feeling of success that they didn't realize they had the ability to do. My hat it off to Ralph for finishing this project in such a short time and doing it well. CONGRATULATIONS FOR A JOB VERY WELL DONE Dick heppnerguy1 point -
This is the one I got https://www.harborfreight.com/70-gal-2-hp-heavy-duty-high-flow-high-capacity-dust-collector-61790.html that's hooked up to my planer and bandsaw.. amazing how fast the bandsaw will make a pile of sawdust and how much floats through the air if I don't have this running.. That said.. it's not the quietest running either.. I can hear it over my planer running boards through it.. I certainly don't want to hear that going all day long.. Think my shop vac is quieter, LOL and the shop vac I can hook up to run off my foot switch so it only runs when the saw it running... My intentions are to buy a Festool MIDI dust vac to hook up to the saws... I just gotta get through this year so I can get some money back into my pockets again.. was going to go with the cheaper brand Fein... but the reviews on the NEW ones say they are not what they used to be..1 point

Ray, surely you jest. They have sentimental value. Twas one of the first anniversary gifts I bought for her. Her heart would break. We often reminisce about the 1967 blizzard. She was 11 months pregnant and by the time I got home from work our 30' double driveway was all cleaned out. Brings tears to our eyes. Shame on you for making such a callous suggestion!1 point

Thanks for all the input. I'm considering if indeed I wish to make a purchase. Weighing the need with the cost and space required. If I got my wife's 3 snow shovels out of the way and into the shed it would give me a few extra inches to work with.1 point
